Such a talented craftsman! I am so glad i came upon these videos. I currently have a chainlink fence i want to replace but the price of vinyl and now lumber is crazy so i was checking out other ideas. I am so intrigued with all of your ideas i have to watch them all! Bless you and thanks for sharing your talent with us!
I'm so addicted to your cement videos. I'm getting ready to do skirting like you did at your brothers but going for the rock look. Your a great teacher. Thank you bless you and your wife.
Beautiful finished product! I do so admire your ingenuity inventing solutions to the problems you encountered, and your obvious caring and public spirit as evidenced by putting the school logo on your wall. The kids at that school are lucky to have you for a neighbor. Thank you for sharing this amazing project.
Thanks for the comment. When the building was 6, 7, 8 grades, I taught science there. Now that it's a 3, 4, 5 building, the 5th grade comes to my back yard to learn about pond ecology.
You should give us a video tour of your garden, your work is amazing I am a fan of your works. It’s all I wanted to learn something comes in the mind but can’t find videos more relevant to. One I was interested to make rock mountain but holding soil inside to plant as in real a mountain has in play area of my kids . A strong and safer one.
Man that is really awesome job there I've been doing stucco an stone for 35yrs I've never seen someone make a chain link fence into stone that's really cool and looks great
Thank you. It's really simple, though somewhat tedious. Doing a real stone wall takes extensive skill and experience. This is something anyone can do. Sure did beat the hell out of ripping out the old fence and putting in a new one.
You Sir, are a true artist. Never have I seen such realistic looking wood made from concrete, but not just that, the paint effect is just brilliant too. Thank you so much for sharing your talent, it’s truly awesome.
Thanks, but if you want to see concrete REALLY look like wood, check out Donald Tucker, who's been doing this for more than 40 years. Now, there's a real artist. fauxboisinconcrete.blogspot.com/ The colors of the rocks, by the way, are not paint, but acid stains.
For sure it is impressive! I watched your vids before and decided to learn more about concrete so I can have some fun myself ( making my ideas come true not dismissing the hard work by saying fun) you really inspired me. Thank you. My wish is the pictographs my tribe made can live in the fences, garden boxes and shelters that is my property now. I think it will make me feel more at home and carry on some heritage. You too, will be given credit. 71 yrs, your more dedicated than some 50 yr olds I have known. Your grace in teaching and brilliant imagination would be pictographic, written for all to see and remember. I will try for that too. Showing the school logo was an awesome move! Thank you for worthy content and inspiring anyone watching. I did watch more of your channel and you are for sure a talented man with concrete. Your yard was amazing, I encourage everyone to check out his yard. Thank you sir.
He made those rocks out of a concrete base each one by hand. Apparently you didn't watch the entire videos. He showed how he made them. You're a outstanding man and your craftsmanship is gorgeous. And at 71 years old you're amazing. Thank you for sharing your artistic talent and your craftsmanship it's fabulous. Hugs!!
Very beautiful! All your work is true to your heart I can tell as you take such time and thought. To share your precious creations is a blessing. Thank you.
Beautiful craftmanship! You're an inspiration to your fellow countryman. Thankyou for a perfect demonstration, how to humbly portray your active participation -via social media; Without waivering, your loyalty as a public servant to your 'neighboring community. Yet able to share your unique depiction of... Your benevolence; For others to aspire toward, maybe! And to hopefully... Replicate, reinvigorate & assimilate the passion of the craft you've edified in your video, maybe!
That is Awesome!! I have been trying to figure out how to make my chain link fence more private. Now I know. Thank you for such a great idea and posting the how to videos.. Love it!!
Your video is very inspiring. I have a town metal guardrail in my front yard due to a dangerous curve on our main road. It's the ugliest thing you ever saw. I have been racking my brain to come up with a way to hide it and make it look a stone wall. Your concrete stone wall is just the ticket! I hope my artistry will be as good as yours.
Thank you for sharing this, I appreciate your diligence, and the knowledge you have given me, I also love the fact you went out of your way to show your support for the school as your neighbor.. And you are a Ford man.. I assume your past included masonry or you had a good teacher, and are very ingenuitive.
My support for the school comes from the fact that I was a science teacher and taught in the building for 6 years before moving on to another school. No masonry or concrete work in my background. Self-taught. I needed to build a pond for the turtles I had in my classroom for years. I made it from concrete so my grandchildren could wade in it without tearing up a rubber liner. So, for 14 years, I've been learning about concrete, its chemistry, and developing my own brand of high-strength composite material.
Very well done!! I've been wanting a rock wall around my garden...now I have a pretty good idea on how to do it...thanks to you! You do excellent work!!
amazing.!! very creative and artistic.! I watched your first video, and when you said what you were going to do, I thought, OOOKKKKKAAAYYYYY... ummmhummmm.. but MAN, I am some impressed. the fake wood looks amazing, and the stones.. you have patience. looks fantastic..! thanks for sharing..
I made my own continuous lattice top for my fence, by staggering 8 foot pieces of 1x2 lumber. I stapled the 1x2s to the 8x2 foot lattice panels, top and bottom - like a "running bond" pattern. I made the panel about 30 feet long. I did need help attaching it to the fence, but it lasted almost 10 years.
The fence in this video has a foundation of steel posts in concrete 40 inches into the ground (below frost line). The fence is covered with an ultra high performance concrete mix referred to as reactive powder cement with a compressive strength of more than 80 megapascals. The metal fence acts as rebar or reinforcement for the concrete. The construction is essentially the same as found in commercial concrete fences and based on a post-and-beam mode of construction. The concrete is composed of sand, Portland cement, CSA cement, metakaolin, silica fume, Xypex brand crystalline waterproofer, AR glass and PVA fibers, and acrylic emulsion in the liquid.
Talk about perfect timing, I found your video randomly, just a day after telling my husband that he'll need to take out the defunct chain link fence that lines only one side of our yard in order to replace it with a durable fence for our new puppy. He is ecstatic! Is your concrete mix above a commercial blend we can purchase or is there a "recipe" for use?
There are many commercial mixes available. They are called vertical mixes or carving mixes, such as this one: www.concretecountertopsupply.com/Item/Vertical_Bag_40lb_sculptural-mix I make my own mix that contains sand, cement, metakaolin, silica fume, PVA fiber and acrylic emulsion. Here is a video of my mix before I started also using silica fume: ua-cam.com/video/etSWuBIcdZc/v-deo.html Also, in this video, I show how I mix a clay-like mix. ua-cam.com/video/oW_6EmdS3j8/v-deo.htmlm37s
I sure wish you were my neighbor. I'd help you build that and pick your brain the whole time. I'm guessing you have spent a lifetime in the concrete business to be this talented. Well done! I came across your videos by accident while searching for hypertufa ideas. What an inspiration! Wish I had seen this before I ripped out all my chain link fences and installed cedar.
No, I was a science teacher for 34 years. Retired in 2004 and had to have a place for the turtles that shared my classroom for 25 years. I started doing concrete with the building of my pond and, with lots of reading and experimenting, developed my own mix and methods. I also learned a lot by watching the work of other concrete artists online, such as Donald Tucker, the master of masters, Sherri Warner Hunter and Carlos Cortes of San Antonio. Turns out, it's really not all that difficult when you learn by watching true artists. Concrete makes a great art medium.
WOW, you are a very talented guy! I think you were right to make the logo brown. If you ever want to sell your home someday, it would be more appealing for it to blend in. What happens if the school ever changes their colors (which does happen)? Anyway, I sure hope you are doing this for income cuz you are EXTREMELY talented.
it's really not a problem at all. The colors are simply artist's acrylic. Want a different color? Just paint over it. The logo is also on the school side of the fence. Dosn't have to please anyone but the school. I don't do this as a business. I'm retired, do it for myself and other people. I don't want the hassle of keeping books for the IRS. Thanks for the comments
Your work is absolutely incredible. Does the acrylic help stick the cement? I’ve been having trouble with my insulation sculptures with my cement not sticking, would the acrylic help or might my cement mixture be off? I’m considering trying the mixture you provided in another video of your fauxbois sculpture mix. Thanks for all your work it’s inspiring
When you say "insulation sculptures", I assume you mean EPS (expanded polystyrene)? To adhere concrete to EPS, make a slurry (paint consistency) of acrylic and your concrete mix. Scrub it on the EPS and then you're ready to apply your concrete. The acrylic is a bonding agent and also makes the mix freeze/thaw resistant and denser. When it cures in the mix, it is an insoluble plastic that acts as a glue.
I love watching your videos and learn something new everytime. You're an excellent teacher. What type of stain did you use and where can I purchase it?
It's called acid stain. Many concrete supply places carry it. I get mine from an online source www.concretecamouflage.com/ What I like about this company is they provide smaller quantities and even sample kits that you can test with before ordering a larger quantity.
That gate really looks like old rusty wood!! amazing I wish you had sowed the technique, all the process to make it look like wood, how you worked the concrete and how you painted it and which materials you used, congrats, I hope you did tape that process!
Here is another video I did that shows the process in detail. The link starts the video about half-an-hour into it ua-cam.com/video/QBAq1T4gc74/v-deo.htmlm43s
The job looks truely amazing. I'm sure you noticed in the comments how many think it is actual stone. The faux wood confounds me though. It looks like perfect barn found wood but wouldn't it have been easier & lighter to use real wood? No matter how nice it looks a swinging concrete gate seems a little impractical to me. I think it would be just as aesthetically pleasing as the concrete also.
When was the last time you saw termites or carpenter bees eat through concrete? I've lived in my house for 44 years and recently replaced the treated lumber deck boards for the third time. Guarantee I'll never have my gate and posts rot, split, warp or need staining. I don't know where you live, but our seasonal climate extremes wreak havoc on wood. The concrete posts and gate are very practical, as are my concrete benches that look like wood. If I were looking for "easier", I would simply have hired everything done. Then, again, you're entitled to your opinion and don't have to live with what I've created. The only one I have to please is myself and my wife.
Im building a Japanese style wall, but it obviously wont be earthen. I was going to get mesh and have it staple gunned to a piece of plywood and apply a stucco/mortar to get the earthen look. After watching your videos, now I am thinking that having the mesh flush against a piece of plywood might not be best. Maybe it should be against lattice or something similar to allow the stucco/mortar to bead through and "grip" more. Any advice?
Never done something like that, but, if I did, I'd use pressure treated plywood, attach metal lath, apply some acrylic bonding agent and then apply my stucco mix.
Looks amazing besides that school logo. As bad as it looks it would of looked better in wood your right . Everyone that don't know you will think the school built it. But man what a fantastic job.
I taught science at the school for six years and the 5th grade teachers bring their classes to my back yard each fall for a lesson in pond ecology. My children, and now my grandchildren, attended this school. It is my way of welcoming the students and other visitors to my yard. I could care less who people believe built it. I know who built it. That's all that matters. Thank you for your comments.
sir , I love the cobblestone affect, I was searching cement projects and came across a pathway marker mold, it was two big molds that made the cobblestone look, you can put them side by side as they fit into each other or end to end as they also fit into each other..and it takes about two hours to make a pathway 40 feet long using the fast drying cement..only 19 dollars on amazon.com may save you hours of work but help you in your future projects...looks just like yours so it will blend it perfect..just thought I would let you know...God bless....connie gray casper wyo..
Yep, they work fine. You also end up with a repetitious pattern that stands out. When I did my pathway around the pond ( ua-cam.com/video/D1oEnxfydc8/v-deo.html ), I used a mold and then hand-altered the stones to break up the pattern. If someone is doing a 40 foot path in two hours, they're related to Superman. It takes much longer than that just to mix the concrete unless you bring in ready-mix and there goes the cost savings. Again, rubber skins and molds are fine, but a portrait or landscape painter could just use a digital camera, too.
Why "ugh"? I taught there for six years. My kids played games in the parking lot and playground all summer. It's quieter than most places. I find I have more privacy than with other houses being there.
Used to be grades 6-8 when I taught there; now grades 3-5. The 5th grade classes come to my yard on a field trip each fall when they do their ecology unit and I teach about pond ecology.
I don't know. I'd be hesitant to cover wood, even if treated. What happens when, not if, the wood decays? That would expose the wire to deterioration as well. Also, What kind of posts? Also depends on your climate. Here in Illinois over my 48 years in my house, I've had to replace my treated lumber deck twice. Hot, dry climate the wood may last much longer.
The original fence posts are now embedded in two layers of ferrocement made from chicken wire and high performance concrete. The posts themselves are in concrete-filled holes 40 inches into the ground.
I use acid stain from www.concretecamouflage.com/ I apply it with a brush. It is a mild acid, so keep it out of your eyes and wear gloves if you have sensitive skin. It is usually diluted 1 to 1 with water. Allow it to develop. Follow manufacturers instructions. Though they say to neutralize with baking soda, I never do. The concrete neutralizes it.
Genoa-KIngston, the two communities that are served by the school district. BTW, the gear cogs logo stands for the original school district before it merged with the Kingston school district long ago. The district is called the COGS (City Of Genoa Schools).
It is sometimes referred to as acrylic bonding agent/admix. There are a number of different chemical variants with varying amounts of solids content sold by dozens of companies. Home improvement store such as Lowes, Menards and Home Depot sell them. Quikrete offers Acrylic Concrete Fortifier. Sika brand is found in Home Depot for example. Thoroseal sells Acryl 60. That's the brand I first learned of from people in the decorative concrete industry. I used to use Dayton Superior J40 brand. They are diluted with water. If a brand has 40% to 50% solids, it is diluted 3 water to 1 acrylic. If it has 25% or so solids, it is diluted 2 water to 1 acrylic. I now use KongKrete brand from Fishstone. It is 50% solids and the best I've used. concretecountertopsupply.com/Item/KongKrete-Acrylic-Polymer-GFRC
Great work. Truly beautiful work. Thank you for taking the time to share your excellent craftsmanship with the world. Are you not concerned with the integrity of the arch on the gate? Why did you choose not to add smaller diameter rebar to support the arch for additional structural support. My fear would be a gust of wind slamming the gate shut or swinging it against the wall causing the top to either fracture or completely fail. Another possible failure of the arch could be from a child or adult pulling themselves up or climbing over the locked gate. P.s. Glad to see you're wearing gloves while working. Cheers from Seattle.
Like most people, your doubt of the strength and integrity of this work is based upon your bias about traditional concrete. This is NOT traditional concrete. It is a form of ultra high performance concrete, also known as engineered cementitious composite or reactive powder concrete. Here is an example of what modern concrete can do. ua-cam.com/video/X90OIT9dd2g/v-deo.html or this: ua-cam.com/video/dmRVsgp4zzs/v-deo.html Neither of these examples contains any metal reinforcement. You can't imagine how frustrating it is to try to convince someone that not all concretes fail catastrophically.
dperry428 Guilty as charged.Thank you for sharing those links. All I can say is wow, wow, wow!! Wow. That is truly impressive concrete. I didn't think I'd ever seen this type of concrete. They've been working to make concrete stronger to resist movement rather than allowing movement to avoid failure. Truly remarkable. I smiled when I saw just how proud he was at the end. The genius doctor was beaming ear to ear. One could easily see his excitement and pride. And to have improved upon this with a self healing mix it just awe-inspiring. I am so sorry for having doubts. Absolutely incredible. Cheers from Seattle. Cameron
Uhmm, this is FANTASTIC, Sir! Well done, easy to follow, step by step tutorial in gate making wizardry. I love it, bravo!!!😁👍
Thank you kindly!
Thank you... this is what I was thinking and did not know if it could be done. Great job, it is wonderful

I am wondering if you were a theatrical set designer in another life? I can see a lot of money and effort have gone into this.
Nope, just a science teacher. $1800, 2 summers and part of a third.
AWESOME WORK , WOW😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱👍👍👍👍👍👍💖💖💖💖💖💖
Very nice...and cool!!
This is master craft
Epic work and skills sir.
So beautiful....its amazing. You gave me an inspiration.
What kind of Color and finishing did you use?
You are an artist
The colors are acid stains from concretecamouflage.com/
Sealed with siloxane in xylene carrier.
Amazing work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow, beautiful .
Thank you.
wow,, that's really close to a school .. ugh... but that fence crazy cool..
Why "ugh"? I taught there for six years. My kids played games in the parking lot and playground all summer. It's quieter than most places. I find I have more privacy than with other houses being there.
dperry428 ugh only if it's a high school...
Used to be grades 6-8 when I taught there; now grades 3-5. The 5th grade classes come to my yard on a field trip each fall when they do their ecology unit and I teach about pond ecology.
Splendid
excellent work! do you think is possible with chicken wire on both side of a wood fence?
I don't know. I'd be hesitant to cover wood, even if treated. What happens when, not if, the wood decays? That would expose the wire to deterioration as well. Also, What kind of posts? Also depends on your climate. Here in Illinois over my 48 years in my house, I've had to replace my treated lumber deck twice. Hot, dry climate the wood may last much longer.
@@dperry428 thank you, Romania near Carpathian mountains-wood decays very fast :(
Its beautiful
Awesome job
Thanks!
What stops it from bending the small metal posts at the ground and falling on someone?
The original fence posts are now embedded in two layers of ferrocement made from chicken wire and high performance concrete. The posts themselves are in concrete-filled holes 40 inches into the ground.
Awesome work bud...👍
Amazing art work! Please tell me what stain and how to appy it, I would really appreciate it and thank you for the tutorial.
This is so fascinating.
Good work.. Nice.. Beautiful ..amzing...
love this is just beautiful.
Truly amazing your very gifted. What does the gk stand for
Genoa-KIngston, the two communities that are served by the school district. BTW, the gear cogs logo stands for the original school district before it merged with the Kingston school district long ago. The district is called the COGS (City Of Genoa Schools).
You mention acrylic as a bonding agent in a number of your videos. Could you share exactly what it is you're using?
Please provide a list of all items used to create concrete wall
GREAT!!
Thanks!!
This is amazing!
OMG .... Great Job!!!!!!!!!!
very useful idea!! Thanks
How Long did this whole project take?
Two summers and part of a third, working part-time between other projects.

Would you use wood from wood pallets instead of the see thru fencing? I want more privacy
You ask if I would. No, I would not. Pallet wood is not treated and, depending on your climate, it will rot in a few years.
Fence came out really good. You are very creative and resourceful. 👍👌
