We live in an environment that we better embrace and accept to harmonize with it while making the best of it. Taking positive and negative circumstances as natural things while reacting with them in the best way.
At least he discovered this simple truth that many inherently know. His early family, wealth, and fame hindered him, but his true seeking saved him and he became enlightened. Sadly, societies and cultures pound the false narrative of riches, fame, and fortune as lasting happiness, and meaning, and what every young person should strive for. This is false of course.
Purpose and meaning have the mind as their source. There is understanding that transcends the mind. This understanding is derived through awareness, which is provided from the stillness out from which life arises. To realize this dissolves the seeker as a personal identity, along with the mind, who, with its thoughts, has produced this personal identity. With awareness comes awakening to self realization, enlightenment.Questions about purpose and meaning dissolve as identification with the mind dissolves.
Tolstoy was seeking for meaning without first looking at the nature of the seeker. An illusion/a ghost can only find illusory meanings. Of course that ignoring the basic facts that one is not separate from the world and that the world is just a conceptual construct, accepted as real only because one was brought up to think so, and that nothing that is perceived last, but only perception/awareness is beyond doubt, creates this search for meaning as a way of escaping meaningless suffering.
Very much what Krishnamurti says. I escaped communism because I did not feel free and I have worked self employed because I always say what I mean and live to my standards. It has been difficult but I do not intend to change it, then truth is the only thing that interests me. Seeking the truth is a good sentence for the meaning of life, as I understand it.
A famous Belgian philosopher, Etienne Vermeersch, quoted to this question :"Why would life need a meaning? Life just exists as we see it. And everything will come to an end sometimes." Nevertheless it is possible to give your own life a meaning. But it might as well be trying to become as rich as possible instead of being humble and and fight injustice.
Unfortunately you have missed several vital points and I will mention only two, Firstly, Tolstoy found peace and contentment - and that is far more to be desired than any amount of money...that in any case does not bring happiness. You can check out what billionaire Paul Getty had to say on that subject. Secondly, being acceptable and pleasing to God through the free gift of grace and faith bestows eternal life.
at the end of the day, connection to someone or something is essential. Be it your god, spiritualism, family, friends or whatever. Feeling alone or being isolated from others in every way is what destroys us.
Being isolated either by choice or circumstance is not always a bad thing and can work for good when we use that time to get close to God through Bible study, thoughtful consideration, and prayer.
Exactly! Tolstoy’s journey reminds us that the search for meaning is universal, yet often feels isolating. I’ve faced similar questions about purpose and what really matters in life, and it’s only through connection with others that I’ve found deeper clarity. Humor also plays a big role in lightening those heavy moments. The Sense of Humor Improvement Program by Habit10x helped me see how humor can ground us during existential moments. Why complicate life . Just enjoy life. The true meaning of life is what you can look back on. Do what you can where you are. If life is pain, it is what it is.
The vast majority (99%) of people never ask themselves these questions. I - with degrees, family and more than enough money - certainly do not. If I am here for a reason someone else must already have worked it out - and I accept whatever it is. In the meantime, like most, I will deal with one thing after the other as best I can and find interest in the things I am actually capable of appreciating.

Many events and happenings have shaped our consciousness. The fact that what is required for us to come into existence being the most guilt-driving act known, has for centuries been a societal stigma. Possibly rooting all the way back to the certain doom for any child resulting from segs parties of Rome. Faith/religion was inevitable. People can disregard many evil acts of any historical accounts in their book of inspiration. For instance, there can’t possibly be a higher trust in a supreme deity, than to heft rocks and participate in the stoning of your closest relatives. Many religions seem to praise these acts, even today. Not sure why, other than as a reference to the graces they ‘really’ appreciate.
The purpose of our Muslim life is to know God and love God. And this journey begins with knowing yourself. Because the Holy Prophet ( pbuh ) said, "He who knows himself has certainly known his God.
The meaning of every living organism is built within its nature: to maximize its inherent potential, or fulfill its destiny. The meaning built within the nature of each acorn is to serva as ffod, or to become a magnificent toweribg tree which feeds hundreds and thousands in its lifetime. We who are capable of deliberatw evil must choose to use our power to become towering oaks of love who do good.
Tolstoy pursued a very dangerous philosophy; that of the meaning of one’s existence. This, posed as an existential question has far too many possibilities that range from political activism to patriarchy, matriarchy, and rebellion against the norms of family and society. Disastrous revolutions are carried out. All to give meaning to life. But what did Jesus say about those who have been born again in spirit and truth? They are, he said, like the wind without purpose or direction not knowing where they are coming from nor where they are going. Their commitment to the Eternal is all they have and all they need. Like the flowers they have no agenda but the display of beauty. They alone are able to understand that God is love.
It's dreadful when your mind consumes much of your idle time tingling with complex absurbility of birth and death. To search for meaningness and meaninglessness of living, I can summarise, is best for clinicial pyschologists trained and researched in philosophy, religious and traditional practices, mind pattern changes due to experiences, joy of simple congregations, stoicism and so on to counsel us. We can't accept that traditional and religious symbolism can bring answer to our search but yet, we have seen many found serenity and satisfaction after their regular routine rituals. Homo sapiens are sum of atoms energeried into a being and each totally different in creation. At 81, I have a wonderful life, of nice big family, love, financial wellbeing, good health and active mind but I do wake up in these dreadful moment of anxiety. Should I terminate my life at planned age when I am capable of decision? Much more challenges from Ageism! If not, just naturally, when I am dying helplessly. Alas, should we belabour and torment our minds or breathe fresh air daily of small new challenges, loves, contributions and unloathy purpose. I hope to find my serenity soon.
Great question! Tolstoy isn’t typically classified as an existentialist in the same way as Kierkegaard or Sartre. Still, his works, especially Confession and Anna Karenina explore existential themes like the crisis of meaning and the search for purpose. Later in life, he became more focused on religious and moral questions, which shaped his philosophy and writings. He’s a unique blend of existential inquiry and spiritual exploration. Are you certain of what you have said? You can know that God exists for sure by many tests including the factor of fulfilled prophecies....and I would say that the aspect of faith is when we who are living at this present time have hope for prophecies yet future to be fulfilled will occur in God's good time ...and that is what faith is.
I can’t see what mind boggling revelation he finally came to. . . He basically folded up his intellectual tent and took the standard” there is a greater entity responsible for our reality.” Any uneducated ,poor peasant could come up with the same answer! He was a cop out!
Thank you for sharing your perspective! Tolstoy's later conclusion that a more significant entity or spiritual force underlies our reality may seem like a 'cop-out,' especially compared to more radical philosophical stances. However, for Tolstoy, this shift wasn't just a simplistic solution-it emerged from a profound personal crisis and a deep dissatisfaction with purely rational explanations. He saw faith as a practical means to give life meaning, a source of inspiration and hope, rather than an intellectual shortcut. Still, your skepticism is understandable. Engaging with these ideas often depends on whether we find personal significance.
He was only vaguely right, since the knowledge of reality during his time was so vague. He advocated the following: 1. A selfless love for others. This is suicidal. What you really want to do is value others for the right reasons: a.) because you need others to survive (so your reasons are selfish); b.) and because others (even other species) are potentially enlightenable*, and we all need as many enlightened minds as possible working on the problems of survival, especially Broader Survival in this harsh and deadly universe. 2. He had this 'love for others' being based on the Christian faith, which is pure make-believe. It has failed miserably because humans need more than just make-believe to go on (for a sense of purpose). Broader Survival gives you that -- to continue to exist. Anything less is insane (suicidal). 3. His notion of 'serving others', 'rejecting worldly pursuits', and 'embracing universal love' just for their own sake's is clueless and thus suicidal, since they do not see the larger picture (continued existence against a harsh and deadly universe). They are blind principles.
The supreme example of what Tolstoy searched for and found is embodied in the Logos aka the Word who is God and who manifested in the flesh as Jesus Christ to serve those whom He created! This isn't the imaginings of the human mind because the sinful fallen corrupt mind of Man could not possibly conceive such a thought and is of Divine origin i.e. it is God's revelation of Himself about Himself given to Man.
