You can see Brennan’s eyes widen for a split second in the first clip when Riz says to Baron, “So…you’re born of lies?” Maybe Brennan had already had some sort of idea for Baron at that point, but I like to think that it’s all part of the imrov, that The Ball just unintentionally gave the DM information about the character, and how it can be used to expand what Baron’s manifestation means for Riz in the future.
I wonder if after the first time the baron creature showed up, Murph and emily went home and she just kept calling him her "romance partner" in that voice
What I really like about Riz in this one is that you can see how much he cares about the people in his life. He points out that Ragh doesn't like this weird Elven dude and is happy to see his parents and his friends being happy, even though all of it was intended to mock him or hurt him. He doesn't need to be in a romance (romænce) to be valued and loved. Ace rights
@@amelooloo making something up "wholecloth" means inventing it from scratch. You didn't use anything as a baseline. Baron is implying that Riz made them up completely from his own brain, not basing Baron on anyone in particular.

People have different relationships, that doesn't make anyone second most important. What your wellbeing depends on is meeting your social and connection needs and you can do that. And you can have close friendships and queerplatonic relationships.
No really!! Brennan bringing Baron back to torment Riz over his apparent asexuality is such a cool choice to lure out the small cues that Murph has dropped in his portrayal like it is a genuine fear that a lot of aspec people have that Brennan was smart enough to acknowledge and make into a point on Riz’s character sheet idk I just really love the realness to subtle ace portrayal
As an Asexual watching this season I was shocked by how on the nose Brennan was talking about the fear of being different from everyone you love and being left behind as they all get into serious relationships. Shit is real
@@musiclikerperson except the problem is, when people get into serious relationships and get married you Will be less important. you Will be less of a priority. those fears are very real and could easily come true.
to all you aro/ace people, a word of solidarity, if not comfort, from someone who is neither of those things. the truth is, there is no escape from loneliness. romantic relationships and sex will certainly not save you. that's because loneliness comes from within, not without. sure, there's a lot of joy in having a romaence paertnaer, but most of you who don't have one will never have to experience the crushing existential horror of looking into the eyes of the person who pledged their life and body to you, someone who loves you more than anyone else, and realizing, "this person is physically incapable of understanding me and what I'm going through, and their attempts at trying to are bringing me greater pain." you also won't be plagued by constant fear of their mortality or the fact that you're not good enough for them. yes, those moments aren't frequent for everyone, and they're usually balanced out by the moments when you DO connect, but they shouldn't be discounted. relationships are painful. finally, it's propaganda by normative society, imo, that romantic relationships are necessarily the higher tier over platonic ones. some of the most beautiful, long-lasting, and meaningful relationships I've ever seen have been between fellow priests/nuns/monks who have not a shred of romantic intimacy to fuel their closeness. I'm not aware of what secular analogs to these religious vocational paths exist, but I hope the secular aro/ace community can start looking to these religious groups for inspiration if there aren't any at the moment. Finally, I wish you all the best, and I hope that you all find the friends you deserve to put you in place of first importance. hell, my wife and I would love to know some of you and to be your friends into old age, and our kids could always use more people who love them just as they are - I can guarantee they'll love you back.
*“It’s not my fault I am born of lies, it is the fault of the deceiver”* Is a metal as fuck line, but I’m more interested in “I try to shoot the mirror” because I would too at that point💀

I've literally never seen this show before but I love this Baron character and wish there was more of them :0c They're so creepy and they're such an interesting reflection of Riz's insecurities of being the odd man out and possibly even being asexual, if I'm reading things correctly. This is such an interesting way to explore those feelings, I love it and I love this character so much for it, even if I technically only met them moments ago.

Have you seen his Calamity run on Critical Role? I've yet to really approach the huge CR backlog but I watch Calamity because Brennan was Dming and it was a prequel. More than half of that miniseries is Brennan throwing some wild curveballs at the players.
I've never played but became interested while watching freshman year. Now I'm afraid that Brennan has set the bar waaay too high for what I would like to see from a DM and any game I join will feel flat, lmao
no joke, this is genius, all my biggest fears just became incarnate in the most skin crawling way i think a dnd game can achive, that was so freaking heartfelt, so well performed, so dark
I just realized that at 7:27 Emily said they used to fight vegetables, and I know she was probably referring to the corn cuties, but we now know they had just gotten done with filming a crown of candy and they were fighting even more vegetables then... Did Emily leak ACOC and none of us even realize it? Lol
Ally did that as well in another episode. When SandraLynn was fighting I think in the pirate brawl, Ally said “huh I should play a ranger next time” which made Emily laugh
Okay, so I looked up stark and it has several meanings, and one of them happens to be 'Barren/desolate' (Ignoring that it could also mean 'rigid', so could also just mean a strict/dead? father)
If you are ace or aro or both and are dealing with fears like this, with fears of people finding people they care about more or not being like your friends, remember there are different types of bonds. Your bonds are not less than, they are just different, and that is okay. You are important and you are loved and you are not broken. Weird to comment this on a video from a funny little show, but you know.
Step 1: Create a character with a voice designed to be brazenly, unsettlingly awkward, over-enunciating the most unwieldy syllables in every word he speaks to the worst possible effect with the greatest possible confidence, all while adding in extra higgeldy-piggeldy diphthongs for good measure, as though attempting to generate Tommy Wiseau’s accent with 19th-century AI. Step 2: Create a parody word designed to eviscerate Tolkien’s elvish naming conventions, a name that piles up frivolous extra letters on each of its three arbitrarily-evolving syllables; a word so crunched-up that upon ending its utterance, it leaves the listener needing several extra seconds of processing time during which they’re a) laughing, and b) thinking, “Did I really just hear that?” Step 3: Make that character say that word. 13:26

Siobhan's little angy-dance when Baron shows up in the forest is just... **chef's kiss**
Ace rights
"Why did you make me up wholecloth from your mind?" I lost it at that point.
what does that even mean i never understood that line
@@amelooloo making something up "wholecloth" means inventing it from scratch. You didn't use anything as a baseline.
Baron is implying that Riz made them up completely from his own brain, not basing Baron on anyone in particular.
It is mindboggling to me how Brennan said fathethriel like that, it is so robotic it sounds like google fucking up a translation
13:30
"The years will go by, and everyone will find someone who matters more to them than you" is such a fucking cold line. I love it.
This should really be reimagined as an animated series, cause good god Brennan’s writing and improv is moving, funny, and intelligent
Critical Role and D20 both have pretty ravenous and eager fan bases, so I would not be surprised by D20 pulling off a similarly successful crowdfunding campaign for an animated Fantasy High.
Baron really out here bringing up the fears many aros/aces feel the most, I am being attacked.
Baron's introduction is genuinely terrifying
*“It’s not my fault I am born of lies, it is the fault of the deceiver”* Is a metal as fuck line, but I’m more interested in “I try to shoot the mirror” because I would too at that point💀
My ABSOLUTE favorite thing about this is seeing the transcriptions of Baron's accent in the comments
I really like Brennan’s blunt way of describing things sometimes. It conveys a kind of intensity, that gives you zero time to process it.
“The mirrors shatter and Baron is dead.”
I've literally never seen this show before but I love this Baron character and wish there was more of them :0c
They're so creepy and they're such an interesting reflection of Riz's insecurities of being the odd man out and possibly even being asexual, if I'm reading things correctly. This is such an interesting way to explore those feelings, I love it and I love this character so much for it, even if I technically only met them moments ago.
baron is terrifying...i've watched the whole story twice and he scares me :D
you did read it correctly, he is ace! and yeah, i adore baron, theyre such a good character and plot device in one!
@@day2139 I don’t know if I would fully call him ace just because Murph hasn’t stated that (I don’t think) and Siobhan was asked if Adaine was ace or aro and she said that Adaine is too young to make that decision and she’ll see what happens naturally. I would assume it’s he same with Riz, might be ace or aro, but best to wait until it’s confirmed
@@rosemacqueen5172 murph literally says "it [romance] just isn't happening yet... me wanting to do that is not happening" in the scene where riz is talking to his dad, and as an aroace, that entire conversation 110% read as a very ace experience, id say thats evidence enough for people to call riz ace! saying "well, hes just a teen, that doesnt mean anything" invalidates his (and many other ace people's) experiences, please dont do so. even if he changes his identity later in life, while we see him, riz is ace. (also, murph + brennan made a VERY ace story in s2, this compilation is proof of that)
@@day2139 No you’re totally right, I’m not gonna lie I completely forgot that happened in the convo with his dad, that’s my bad, it’s a real long show
Lou stimming from nervousness throughout this whole video is so real 😂 11:19 example
i like how baron's "accent" sounds kinda like text to voice
How appropriate for someone who has only the roughest semblance of existence.
I don't even watch this show. I'm just a DM taking notes.
SAME
ive listened to the entirety of naddpod and ive never seen murph baffled as speechless as he was while meeting baron for the first time
Lou being uncomfortable is my favorite part of rewatching clips about Baron
Watching this knowing how Izzy took what little we knew about Ostentatia and ran with it in The Seven is amazing
I was literally just waiting for the line where Baron says "Fathrethriel" lol
The mirror with his parents is absolutely heart breaking. Hits hard every time.
The symbolism of a monster coming out of a mirror and representing insecurities is quite nicely done
My favorite part o the Live season is that it really was just Brennan taking one off jokes his players did earlier in the series and absolutely wrecking them with said gags later
This whole thing is a demo of Brennan's awesome improv and dm-ing.
To get genuine emotional responses from your players means you are running one hell of a game
This whole episode was a live therapy session, fr fr
i think about thr phrase "you have been naughty thrice riz gukgak" about once a day
I used to yell this at work when it got too quiet. First time it happened I didn’t realize that my supervisor had just taken a drink of water and he almost choked. I’m still not sorry.
13:30 I have no idea how Brennan pronounced the name in that way but it makes me laugh every time
Gods I love Lou's reaction when Brennan starts doing the voice
Ally's reaction to baron's introduction truly sends
Baron is one of my favorite characters and one of Brennan's best voices. Also ace Riz Gukgak rights babeyyyyy
Baron has never been horrifying to me. However I will say the voice has lived in my mind for awhile now, Brennan's voice work is amazing.
Me as an aroace person listening to Baron read out my greatest fears: 👁👄👁
This is the most accurate fear and anxious feelings of being ace and having to confront your dynamics with everyone else around you
The sheer satisfaction Brennan must get from making his fellow brilliant comedians laugh and cringe in terror. I can't even imagine how good that must feel

17:55 or did you like her more when she was a mystery instead of a person?
18:20 I'm the little shrimp of this crew!
I’ve gotta say this is whole heartedly, honestly, the most terrifying thing
Lou's reaction to the introduction of Baron from the whispered voice and how he gets more horrified as time goes on is beautiful
love the fact that baron from the baronies was killed by a shrimp.
I’m still wondering when Brennan decided “yeah, I’m using this.”.
I kept wondering that throughout this season with almost everything.
Probably the moment Riz made Baron up. Watching Murph, it's not hard to tell Riz is trying to get out of an uncomfortable situation. Brennan be like "!!! .... 😈!"
"I admit there might be something wrong with me." - Brennan Lee Mulligan, everybody.
My favorite thing is watching Brennan look around at his friends when he says something funny with a gleeful smile
I think D20 Live Episode 17 is probably my favourite single episode that they've ever put out. Brennan just takes the gloves off is relentless non-stop for the whole 2 and a half hours.
Have you seen his Calamity run on Critical Role? I've yet to really approach the huge CR backlog but I watch Calamity because Brennan was Dming and it was a prequel. More than half of that miniseries is Brennan throwing some wild curveballs at the players.
I'm so greatful my DM isn't Brennan bc the irl psychological damage I would get would have been greater than my character's.
Look how much Brennan is enjoying this
He genuinely loves terrifying the players in such an Uncanny Valley way
I just realized that at 7:27 Emily said they used to fight vegetables, and I know she was probably referring to the corn cuties, but we now know they had just gotten done with filming a crown of candy and they were fighting even more vegetables then... Did Emily leak ACOC and none of us even realize it? Lol
Ally did that as well in another episode. When SandraLynn was fighting I think in the pirate brawl, Ally said “huh I should play a ranger next time” which made Emily laugh
I think you mean 'Did Emily leek ACOC...'
7:28 Brennan's reaction to the players horror is the reason I watch these complilations so often
I _know,_ he's practically melting. "You guys think I'm scary? :DDDD" Such a cinnamon roll of a man for someone who just made an eldritch horror.
"Ragh will not spend the rest of his life with Fathrethrithririel."
He sounds like a cassette tape with some warping on the tape, it’s wild
Can never get enough of the combined horror/comedy that is Baron.
I cant wait to see how baron comes back in senior year. A magnificently terrifying manifestion of insercurity.
The Ball is an ace icon.
Riz is an ace king
You love to see it
LOL between Baron from the baronies, and Hilda Hilda from Hilda Street Emily and Murph are made for each other
13:30
for my own viewing experience
Brennan just wanted to do a Tommy Wiseau voice.
Tommy Wiseau is definitely from the Baronies
I just spit coke and chicken sandwich at my wife.... thanks.
@@sluckett21 Hope she enjoyed the impromptu KFC
I’m 17 just like yooooo
As soon as Brennan says that they see movement in the mirrors around them, Siobhan's irl Old World Faerie anxieties kick in.
It's hilarious realising that Hilda Hilda living at 22 Hilda is just stolen from Baron from the Baronies
i have never understood what brennan meant when he said “stark father”
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN
Okay, so I looked up stark and it has several meanings, and one of them happens to be
'Barren/desolate'
(Ignoring that it could also mean 'rigid', so could also just mean a strict/dead? father)
yeah stark usually means barren. like you'd think of a desert as stark. :)
in this context it would mean strict or unfriendly
My assumption was that it was referring to the Nightmare King. Baron was born of the Nightmare King personifying Riz's lies and fears.
@@levtokol8649 I'm pretty sure this is the correct interpretation
A couple of years have past and the fact that I realized I was Ace (or ace adjacent) watching this shit is still insane xD
I can’t believe Riz had to deal with a whole ass Horror Movie monster, and Fabian just had to deal with a Sexy Rat… and nothing else
How dare you call Chungle-Down Bim nothing?
Nothing like watching a whole room of people laugh to hide their terror
The amount of times I come back to this is ridiculous
Step 2: Create a parody word designed to eviscerate Tolkien’s elvish naming conventions, a name that piles up frivolous extra letters on each of its three arbitrarily-evolving syllables; a word so crunched-up that upon ending its utterance, it leaves the listener needing several extra seconds of processing time during which they’re a) laughing, and b) thinking, “Did I really just hear that?”
Step 3: Make that character say that word.
13:26
The look on Lou's face when Baron is destroyed is just so freaking powerful.
All this time, I thought his name was Riz GutGat like stomach gun! I always thought that was so cool, RZ Stomachgun, private eye!
even when it shows the name on screen, like in the first episode?
