- Hey this is my first animatic! This originally started as an assignment for class but I've only recently been able to finish it. This is the scene that actually got me into watching Fantasy High and Dimension 20 in the first place so I wanted to do a lil somthin somthin for it :)

I still think a physical manifestation of a characters personal insecurities is the coolest enemy idea ever
i would *love* to do this at some point as a dm, sadly tho my players dont really *do* the whole roleplay thing, and dont have deep characters
@@thatonesentientbagel4043 weed it out, create an encounter with a hag or something that can sorta syphon it out of em. Or not, depends if the players are cool with that or if theyll just try to kill it

_Definitely_ stashing that line away in my "list of creepy af lines".
My personal favorite creepy line I've yet to use is "the (n+1) of you continue walking," where n is the number of party members.

So Baron is the Weaver of Lies? I just recently got into D&D so I have been reading up on things, this sounded familiar really.
@@melchiorzibeon5024 Baron was a joke character Murph made up because Riz was insecure about never having dated anyone before. Basically a “they go to a different school” type thing. But Brennan just ran with it and made them into a really cool vessel for Riz’s character development in the later half of the season

Such a good line. Brennan is endlessly creative and always dropping great lines like this.
Zac stuttering "Can we be done?" at the end is the most relatable thing ever because I had to pause the video the first time I saw that episode. And then Brennan was so happy that they found him scary when he told this story
I've said it before and I will say it again. The sheer delight on Brennans face when he found how terrifying this was to the people was almost as scary as this actually masterpiece. I can memorize this story to tell at a campfire in a more relatable way. I cannot mimic that look without actually going insane first
I was listening to this part at work(also thought they removed on on the app but nope it was in later episodes) and I was getting the creeps listening to it.

As a DM myself, I can confirm that there is nothing more satisfying than coming up with something you intend to be scary/unnerving, and your players being absolutely *terrified* by it...in a good, safe, agreed-upon way, of course.
I mean have you seen EXU Calamity? Brennan can be more than scary, he was fkn terrifying

More specifically, it's Fantasy High: Sophomore Year.
Just pointing this out because Dimension 20 is an anthology series, which can make navigating by seasons kinda tricky.
riz gukgak (the gobin boy) made up a pretend boyfriend/girlfriend to avoid being the only person in the group who wasnt interested in kissing people, he called them baron from the baronies, and this skeleton character is like a manifestation of his insecurities

@@hiro2protagonistListen, since Riz is probably on the aroace spectrum, it may not be an OTP to ship, but a BROTP could work! Once Riz accepts himself, I think his "romance partner" could become just... a "partner". And everyone'll be better for it.

Absolutely love how Riz is drawn, and obsessed with the little hand motion for “I TAP OUT”
I love that because my thought of the reason why rizz did that in his moment of pure adrenaline and Instinct was because of him being on the owlbear team, and because of him possibly sparing with his friends and other classmates and people on the owlbear team
He does it because it’s what they told you to do if it was too much and you needed to tap out, it was drilled into him so no one would unnecessarily get badly injured
Which turns what was likely said as a joke into something that makes this situation more horrific
100% - This is my head canon Riz now, and the animation of the tap out is GOLD
And the way the taps were perfectly synced between video and audio!
Brennan Lee Mulligan once again showing a perfect combination of horror and comedy. The kind of skill it takes to make people genuinely laugh while ALSO being extremely creeped out.
My favorite line is when he says he's going to take you to see his Stark father

I like how Riz's hand-arquebus gets upgraded to a modern semi-auto in this
He needed the upgrade
By that point he was using his father's gun , wich is stated to be better and more modern-ish than the arquebus
Hearing Brennan say "A voice... colder than the grave..." is so extremely chilling to me

can we appreciate the good trigger discipline? like that is proper gun etiquette you don't usually see in a lot of things. I love that at 0:48 he keeps his finger off the trigger, since there is no immediate threat, and he has no reason to have his finger on that trigger. it's the little things y'all. great animation, i love it.

@@keylime3167 i guess because baron’s figure was basically riz’s but a mannequin. I think it’s part of the joke as riz used the genderless term ”partner” while describing baron and didn’t specify gender

i've rewatched fhsy so many times but you just gave me those scary "first time meeting baron" chills again, bravo!! your character designs for riz and baron are so on point, and that last frame at 6:33 scared the shit out of me omg

This is one of my favorite recurring characters, Baron is the creepiest thing Brennan invented for Fantasy High. With his introduction, you just think he's kinda silly and not capable of any real harm. A little spooky but it's so absurd you can't help but laugh. The callback here portrays him so creepily that originally the goofy line "I know 3 things are true. 1) you are my romance partner..." etc. sent chills up my spine when I heard it this time.

THIS IS SO GOOD even just listening to this was fucking horrifying but seeing it illustrated is insane!!!
To me, at least "You would have to take a step forward" is a pretty strange and unnerving line. Brennan delivers it so casually, while the phrasing of it (you would HAVE to take a step forward) implies an amount of effort and thought that would not typically be required from an action as simple as stepping forward. I know this line was probably something improvised but to me it really underlines the creeping dread of this scene. Riz is afraid to step forward. To investigate the next room, he would have to leave the safety of the shadows and move towards the door.
Brennan's story telling here was fucking PHENOMENAL, of course, i still hear the baron's voice in my dreams, but god damn. Murph with that first "What do you want?" was what sent that first really deep chill down my spine. Fucking AMAZING.
I am in love with this. Horror doesn't normally get me, but the way you brought this scene to life honestly have me goosebumps.
The choice to have Baron be completely expressionless is SO GOOD!! Amazing art, def one of the best fantasy high animatics I’ve seen!

This was my foot in the door for Fantasy High. My husband had just started watching Freshman Year, but this reinforced my desire to watch. Wow! Can't wait to see my husband react to this!
I love the fact this has been animated. Baron of the Baronies is the greatest DND character of all time
When I first saw this, it STUCK with me. Like I had trouble focusing on anything, it hit me that badly. Good animation recapturing that feeling
the scariest thing about the Romance Partner is that little bit of white in the right eye socket, makes my mind try and make out an eye in that space. it’s goddamn terrifying, good job

SCREAMING I JUST watched this late in the night in complete darkness and this animatic brings it to a whole new level. Literal chills. Your Baron design is so good and creepy as hell, all the little motions and complete lack of expression sells the scares really well, especially the hand brushing hair from Riz’s face before knocking him out? TERRIFYING.
that little brushing back of hair thats added at the end really just sends the whole thing
The visible rolls - the twist - in his neck at the end is just… simply a fantastic detail. Bravo

I wonder what would've happen if Riz and Baron actually became romance partners
Spoilers:
Either Kalina or Cassandra can make dream-creatures seem real, but each with their own limitations. Kalina can only enhance the illusion by hijacking a single person's senses and Cassandra's ability to completely warp reality to make dreams real only seems to apply in-forest.
If Baron had remained by Riz's side, perhaps Baron would have disappeared mid-fight when Riz was cured of the plague or when Kalina was defeated in combat. Perhaps Baron would have lived on through Cassandra's magic, but only within the boundaries of the forest.
However, the reason Baron existed at all was due to Riz's worries over possibly being aro/ace and being left alone because everyone else would eventually find someone more important to them.
Baron only has 3 things supporting their identity, 1)
their home, 2)their romance partner being Riz, and 3)their name. They were created out of thin air, have no memories, no ties, nothing. That's all they've got as proof of their existence.
Living in the forest instead of the Baronies or accepting Riz is aro/ace would destroy Baron's spirit. I doubt Baron could ever accept living in such a world.
The clawed hands are amazing. And the soft line quality makes me just happy to look at.

A friend showed me *this* before I got into Fantasy High. They showed it to me after showing me and another friend a quick compilation of quotes from it. We pointed out one of the Baron quotes, apparently, so they felt they had to introduce us to Baron. The friend that was experiencing Baron for the first time, like me, now does a *killer* Baron impression and I'm now up to Baron's introductory episode. It's somehow even better in full context.
Why the fuck did this creator drop one bomb ass animation about fantasy high two years ago and then just dip?

Gotta say- if I was in his position, I wouldn’t have walked infront of the mirror, i would have put my hands on the back of it, pushed it forward so that I’m standing behind the mirror, then push it softly, and make it rest on the ground facing down without cracking or shattering it
I mean, at that point, he didn't know the sound came from the mirror. He was creeping towards the other room to see what was going on in there.

I would have accidentally derailed the plot by hiding behind the mirror to wait for someone to appear
yeah the framing the dm gave of the scene immediately made me think the mirror is evil
I think Brennan wanted Riz to get kidnapped so it didn’t really matter what he’d done it would have had the same outcome probably

HIGHLY recommend if you haven’t checked it out already, extremely compelling story and one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen
Dimension 20 is a D&D show on the level of Critical Role and others. Fantasy High is a multi-part campaign of theirs. Excellent material.
