It was a great pleasure to meet up with Marc André and go through these two great watches. I have to admit, I was quite nervous and have noticed that I made a few mistakes, as there is no time for a "Take Two", we have agreed that Mark just publishes... here is a list of the points I wanted to correct. Many thanks and I will do my best get over the nerves... maybe a quick dram will settle the nerves for next time. Peter. 3:15 I say pendulum when I am referring to a weight. 6:48 The barrel transmit power through the train. 7:00 The balance oscillates not the tourbillon. 9:05 Bridges which covered each wheel. (Not each bridge) 10:53 Barrel and fusee (not tourbillion) 11:25 The fusee chain normally never falls off, there always remains tension but the stop-work mechanism ensures the chain can only be wound to a certain point, protecting it and using the central part of the mainspring that is the most uniform. 15:49 The lower bridges are made from maillechort/German silver the upper are steel, in earlier examples, they were mostly maillechot.
You certainly didn't seem nervous in the video. Thanks for such an informative overview of the two constant force mechanisms. I have already downloaded a deconstruction manual (GS hi-beat GMT) from your website!
The in depth watch technology education that Mr. Speake-Marin provides is much more satisfying than anything else offered about watches on You Tube. This kind of detailed analysis, comparison and historical perspective allows the viewer to become a better informed and more literate appreciator of horology. Mr. Speake-Marin is an extraordinarily effective communicator who can provide technical information without boring the audience. Great content.
I love how this channel is always very educational in a very welcoming and non posh manner. I like these real stories. Whether it's a factory visit, explanation of different mechanisms or finishing techniques etc.. I like how the entire industry is covered instead of just new watches. To me this channel is pure passion for watchmaking. Unmatched by any other channel. Your channel helped me in making decisions for my own collection. I'm now in the progress of saving up for my first high end watch from an independent watchmaker. Almost there! Can't wait to put in my order :)
20 minutes with Peter and I feel like I completed a semester horology. Add your marvelous videography and the fact that I'm a big fan of Ferdinand Berthoud. Arnold & Son is also a great, vastly underrated brand. What an awesome video, congrats. P.S. I'd love to hear the FB movement in action.
In his website, brilliant Peter also features his deconstruction of the magnificent Arnold & Son Nebula, one of the most remarkable watches ever made. Thank you, Peter, for your wonderful analytic work!
Was awaiting for ur new video Marc....... another indepth video.... OMG both timepieces finishing is impeccable! Gosh every parts is so well finished to those of the holy trinity level. Simply beautiful.
I have watched a fair number of your videos, however I have enjoyed this video by far the most. Not only some terrific teaching provided on these two types of constant force mechanisms, but the conversation between two true watch lovers adds to create a most wonderful learning experience. Bravo and thank you!
Thank you so much for this comment, makes us extremely happy and we indeed love making these types of videos. And thanks so much for supporting us on Patreon 🙏🙏🙏
My interest in timepieces comes almost completely from a place of mechanical fascination and interest in the history behind design. Thank you for making videos that present the subject matter in a casual yet in-depth manner. The handiwork behind these pieces is nearly unbelievable.
Extraordinarily Fascinating! The explanations I thought were very very clear without drawings and I dont have much expertise. Thank you ! This was a treat!
I have been the follower of the Naked Watchmakers since the beginning and learned a lot. Thank you for such an educational video, which is so enjoyable and valuable.
Great video. Maybe an idea for a companion video, comparing the different ways of implementering a tourbillon. The traditional tourbillon, the flying tourbillon, etc...
The Naked Watchmaker is beautiful persona with his calm voice.I've enjoed watching this episode so mutch.Thank you very mutch making this video..........
Making something complicated simple, could be the Watches TV Motto, I absolutely love the video, please keep doing these episodes. Cheers, Marc. PS: next episode you can use some braids you're almost there :) just kidding, stay safe.
What a great video. It is good to hear somebody attributing Arnold with one of his ideas that Breguet seems to have claimed. Now it’s time to set the record right with the tourbillon. Invented by Arnold, but he couldn’t get it to work properly. He died and Breguet made it work.
Anyone notice that the A&S is struggling with its true beat seconds at times? Id love to understand the underlying cause of this, It can clearly be shown at 6:54
The diplomacy that oozes out of this guy...Oh my Gawd. He could ease USA-China or Saudi-Iran tensions in a heartbeat 😛 Quick question : How does remontoire compare to these to mechanisms? eg in some FP Journe or Grönefeld watches
very confused. are escapements isochronic or not? if they are then it shouldn't matter how much force is being released by the mainspring, no? why all the fuss?
Also I don't know if you know this but there is a guy on UA-cam calling his channel "the nekkid watchmaker" I don't know if there is a connection there but you should know either way I thought.....cheers

Always enjoy your contributions Peter, could listen all day. Don't worry about the nerves,it's only watch nerds like us watching! All the best.
Class act!
Can the Arnold & Son be called a deadbeat movement? It ticks the individual seconds.

It's an honour to listen to Mr Speake talk about watch making. Plus he is such a nice guy. Please persuade him to do more collabs with you.

Simply a phenomenal presentation of two exquisite timepieces.

Enjoyed very much, you should have more of these sessions.
And we love making them 👍👍
" It's much easier to explain with a drawing or movable model than verbally," CAD/CAM is the new salesman samples.
The mechanism is the most beautiful in the watches. Greatness.
And you have two pretty nice ones here ;)
Wonderful video! Thank you both!
Thank you too!

Ferdinand Berthoud watches are my type of watch. Nothing else sings to me as much as their watches do.
They are indeed beautiful and the level of execution is phenomenal

Thanks and we will soon do more on British watchmaking ;) All the very best

Good eye. No idea what the deal is but definitely seems odd.
Yes! I came to the comments just to discuss this. It honestly is a bit embarrassing!
Peter is like a Medical Doctor who giving a lecture.
Quality programme.
Thanks a lot, happy you enjoyed this
Wise explanation 👏
Love the polar opposite approach to improve the same timekeeping problems.
i have to say the arnold's tourbillon is one of the most crisp tourbillon's i've seen
Superfluously vague and verbose, thanks for the video.
That FB is absolute gorgeous ❤️
excellent video
Thank you very much!
Whoever the 1 dislike is, time is not your friend I see lol
Beautiful watches. Why not versions of these without the finishes to bring down the costs so more people can afford and therefore enjoy owning one?
The diplomacy that oozes out of this guy...Oh my Gawd. He could ease USA-China or Saudi-Iran tensions in a heartbeat 😛
Quick question : How does remontoire compare to these to mechanisms? eg in some FP Journe or Grönefeld watches
LOL
@@thenakedwatchmaker Comments about the remontoire plz 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Speake-Marin makes beautiful watches, no coincidence he knows what he's talking about
Just for clarification, Peter Speake is no longer associated with Speake-Marin watches, he left 3 years ago. But we appreciate the compliment.
The naked watchmaker is the shit. Documenting horology history to be learned for decades to come. Mostly free at his site.
haha, nicely said 😉
Why don’t you ever review jaeger lecoultre?
very confused. are escapements isochronic or not? if they are then it shouldn't matter how much force is being released by the mainspring, no? why all the fuss?

Well done for not falling asleep 😴 or did you?
MY WATCHES...
A&S second hand doesn't move correctly all the time === no real constant force
Berthoud is amazing

Simply great content.
Glad you think so!
