I’ve watched this video multiple times. This is far and away the best explanation of grip pressure on UA-cam! Such an important concept but largely ignored by teaching professionals and players. I was a member of your site years ago and will re-connect!
Thank you. Been suffering with tennis elbow the last 7/8 months and I've a feeling it's from poor gripping. Looking forward to loosening up and trying these techniques. Also, if any tips on tennis elbow I'm all ears. Have had a few injections and it has still come back.
A loose grip is the key to faster head speed. A tight grip really only controls your muscle from accelerating but not the ball. A loose grip also prevents tennis elbows. Another true gem(ignored by so many people) from Jeff! I’m sharing this to tons of my friends.
Great tip Jeff, the last few weeks I've noticed a dip in my forehand consistency, realised after watching your video, that's exactly what I'm doing wrong! Looking forward to getting back to basics on my hit tomorrow
Great point!!! Thank you very much!!! My number was 5-6!!! As an amateur - for decades - I had a problem/question about the grip pressure! I did the opposite - squeezing tight at the beginning and the end of swing --- and loosen the grip at the moment of impact!! I wanted to hire a coach specifically for the grip - I am changing my grip for topspin. Your lesson is super precious for me and at the right time. Thank you!!!!!
wow, this was mindblowing for me! 💥 Watched the video and tried it today. My opponent commented that it looked like a was barely holding my raquet. I have never played with such consistency and power as today. The trigger finger grip helped too. Cant wait til my next game! Many many thanks from me 🙏 might have been the most valuable lesson for me
Hi Jeff. Totally agree with what you mean in your this video. Myself is using rf ps autograph and I would say I am around 4. I'm a tennis coach in my country Malaysia and my 1st thing to tell my students is this subject, the loose grip. Thanks so much for your thoughts and I will be sure to follow on your video in the future.
Great tip, thanks! Would you say that power should come from proper use of the hips and having a loose arm and grip? Seems to work for the serve as well
Jeff you are right. With loose grip couple with forward motion, there is easy power. Not easy for club players to maintain over the course of the game. Overall its a very good tip. :)

You're just the best coach I ever had and this without meeting, wow ! My forehand improved a lot thanks to your video "footwork and open stands". I am now working on my serve, starting from scratch like you say so, not easy! but I am persevering!!! I'll get there because you're so good. Thanks from a Belgian leftie🤗
Great instruction. This concept (and its corollary: the looseness of the wrist) has been quite an epiphany and a game changer the first time I heard it in 2019. It fixes "all" at the same time: more power with less effort and less tension, hence less fatigue in the arm and no more elbow pain... Besides, as one of the billions of control freaks on the planet, I like the underlying philosophy of letting go !
This helps a lot but still the question is what should be the grip tightness when you are about to make contact Is it a 3 or 10?. If its loose wont it affect the stability of the shot
Is the thumb touching the middle finger essential? I’ve never really done that before but I do have the pointer finger spread. Will it Yelp my shot if I put my thumb on my middle finger?
If I hold the racquet that loose, the racquet moves around in my hand and I have uncontrolled, jerky contact with the ball, feeling mostly at the base of my index finger and under the tip of my pinkie.
Yes, Grip should not be loose at contact for many reasons including risk of developing blisters, but hand should be loose as it has to speed up racquet same way whip handle speeds up the tip of a whip. Instruction to think of grip pressure during a stroke is too destructive, it rather should focus on mapping arm +racquet parts to a whip elements : wrist, handle, thong, tip, then it would be more clear which part ( wrist,..) should be loose before contact as after the motion after contact does not need to be controlled but only looked at at for the purpose of checking correctness of motion prior of contact.
I was thinking 6 but then realized that I'm way off. I'll try with a 3, I just don't know if I'll be able to generate any power with it being so loose. I'll give it the old college try though.
On the serve, grip pressure is 1/10 or 2/10. On the volley 1/10 or 2/10 or 3/10, depending on the type of volley -- e.g. if you are hitting a drop volley a 1/10 will absorb the incoming pace. On the forehand, a 3/10. But very difficult to do this as it is tempting to grip tighter as the rally goes longer.
I played yesterday and now I have some damage. I feel like it's most likely how tightly I'm holding the racquet. I'm so used to holding it tightly from using a grip too small.
I hear everywhere that a loose grip is better, but when I try loosening my grip, I find that I lose power, spin and control. I feel that keeping my grip firm at contact produces a much better shot than when I keep it loose. Am i missing something?
A looser grip may be better in theory, but I think I grip tight because my timing is not good enough to have a loose grip and I'm worried about wristing. Plus I'm not very strong. What should I do?
ELEVEN? Love ya, Dude,, for uploading these great lessons. But wait, is that "2" on the fence just the court number, or a hint at the target grip intensity? You're the consummate tennis sifu. If my grips were rats, I'd have left a few million dead ones on the courts already.

Hi Jeff...does your grip pressure change on approach shot?...thanks
My guess: Grip pressure doesn't change. High ball: maybe flat w/ full swing. Strike zone ball: topspin, w/full swing. Low ball: slice?
It can, but depends on the type of ball as well. The main concept is to avoid overgripping the racquet.
Thank you

How about the grip for volleys? Should it be tighter due to greater impact received from opponent's end? Thanks.
Good question.
You will often see the racquet face shake on pro volleys. I think they are holding it very loose.
Yes Boon, slighlthy tighter. Great point.

Hi Jeff , why semi-western grip is better then eastern or western ?

Definitely, give it a go!
should grip pressure be constant all the time in tennis?
It can vary, but focusing on relaxation is always beneficial.
Hi Jef, just wondering if players at top 50 level ever holding it tight in some tense situation?
Hi Pramod. Definitely, it is possible.
On the serve, grip pressure is 1/10 or 2/10. On the volley 1/10 or 2/10 or 3/10, depending on the type of volley -- e.g. if you are hitting a drop volley a 1/10 will absorb the incoming pace.
