Can I Train a Macaw To Like ME in One Day?! | Amur's Story

  • Dave and I were hired to perform in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan with our bird act - only, we had to borrow someone else's birds! Doves and a macaw... so our gracious hosts had just gotten this 1 year old blue and gold macaw they named Amur.
    Dave met Amur and it was love from first sight at the hotel room. I came later and it was not. In fact, we learned Amur wasn't keen to women at all because her owner's wife was deathly afraid of her!
    That's fine, only Dave had to work with her in his act anyway, I really didn't NEED to... but... she didn't like me? Seriously? And not women at all? Well, I can't leave Bishkek without at least trying to change that ;)

    This video could not have come at a better time. We rescued a Senegal parrot who loved me at the rescue I volunteer at, but lost trust in me when we took him home, resulting in some unexpected and hard bites. Since then, I have been so scared with him, my own anxiety disorder being a massive hindrance. Targetting, toys, and eating fresh veggies together have massively helped us be great friends again. The tips and story you shared here are so inspiring for me and I'm stoked to work on these things with our Skittles. You guys are awesome and I love watching all your videos.

    This was awesome. It just shows how a) the person needs to change/communicate with the bird more effectively and b) how little effort it can take to turn things around when you do that effectively.

    This was just totally awesome! Except for the part where Dave leaned over into the scene and looked at the camera - and I waved at him! Promptly felt like an idiot! Lol I really did see Capri in him tonight. But I really did love this one. Especially when you said you were done, and then you just HAD to! I understand that completely because that's the same way I am! Really did enjoy this. Thank you!

    I visit a bird store that has 3 Maccaws that I interact with. Onre looks like Mora but is 40 years old. Another is about 20 years old and supposedly does not like men. They both finally let me pet them in the cage, but will take shots at me unexpectedly, but I am quick. When they are out of the cage the red one sometimes lets me pet him if owner not close by. The blue one, I can only touch his beak.I was told the red one will act like it will climb on you then bite hard. By the way their is a 2 year old red Maccaw named Jasper who I can do all types of interactions with,I wish I could have him but live in an apartment. You are very brave with Mora the way you opened your hand as he aggressively went at your hand, could have lit you up good, but he didnt , probably because you werent afraid in his eyes.

    Jaimeleigh, I stand corrected: the value in these series you’ve been doing really is in the magic (pun intended) of simply watching a professional at work. Such a pleasure watching he process unfold.
    I’m wondering your take on the clicker versus simply a verbal marker. So many I know have bypassed the clicker and simply use a verbal cue, to great success. Studies in canines have shown absolutely no difference between the markers used and training success. Especially if you take time to charge the verbal marker.
    But here you lament not having a clicker, and imply you’d do better with it. Is this simply a personal preference of yours or do you feel like you’ve seen a difference yourself?

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  6 років тому +3

      CHRIS SEABOLT I believe it’s a personal preference based on what the person uses well more consistently.
      I often use praising words or encouragement and so I like the clicker to stand on its own as my bridge so I can give praise on TOP of that click. I’d hate to feel like my praise was actually bridging over and over vs reinforcing on its own.
      So it’s just personal preference. Some people say “good” all the time to their animals to making it a bridge on its own is extremely ineffective for them because they can’t break the habit of saying it all the time and not following up with a reinforcer.
      I make due without it when it’s not around though and can still make progress - I just think the clicker gets the animal truly understanding we are training vs just interacting.
      Thank you for your kind words. ☺️

      Elle Alana Stanley a bird needs other birds. Humans can never replace another animal as a partner - and if you really think that, please do some research

    • @rika6108
      @rika6108 6 років тому

      Elle Alana Stanley usually birds hate other birds because they've either been kept alone or fed by hand, which made them antisocial to other animals then humans. If raised a d kept together, no bird will have these kind of behavioural problems. Obviously if you adopt a bird with these problems it can be better to keep them on their own, but if you go out to buy a bird you can easily get 2 to avoid it.

    Allowing that bird near the flimsy metal door was a fatal error. Of course the bird is going to compulsively check any perch with their beak before stepping up onto it - they're frequently interacting with a thin, swingy, wobbly, (sharp?) door! You should've removed that thing immediately, because it was fighting against your attempts to get the bird to step up foot-first rather than beak-first.

  • @hpeterson10579
    @hpeterson10579 3 роки тому

    Someone probably asked but question about the step up. She kind puts her beak down but still steps up… usually I give up if my guy puts his head down like he’s going to nip… what are your suggestions for that? Just run with it and treat when calm?

    I have a military macaw that absolutely loves my dad and I’ve tried to build a bond with her, but she seems to have a very tricky personality as to where she’ll step up and be nice but randomly bite and chase my family members around the house, I’ve gotten her to step up and I’ve given her treats but she just insist on biting me, also she’ll still bite at my dad (softly) and she loves him to death. Any thoughts as to why she’ll bait me in with a friendly attitude/stepping up then immediately bite me????
