    In 2010, a legends race was held at Bristol Motor Speedway. Some of NASCAR's biggest names of the past took part. But with 5 laps to go, it all went wrong. This video highlights the crash, and the lives and careers of the two men involved, Larry Pearson and Charlie Glotzbach.

    The most fun I ever had at a race was in '02 at the Legends Rematch race at Spartanburg Fairgrounds watching Dick Brooks, Bud Moore, Cotton Owens, Roger Mandeville, David Pearson, Chuck Piazza, James Hylton and probably others I cannot remember racing flathead ford dirt cars. I'd love to see a similar event or series these days! They could race at places like the charlotte dirt track as weekend companion races to the Cup cars.

    These actually aren't late models, but rather former USAR Pro Cup stock cars. Under the composite bodies, it's essentially a gen 4 cup car complete with driver-side steel plating that was made mandatory long before this incident. Just a bad crash.

    The 91 legends race at Charlotte was fantastic and would probably be the replacement to use for another such race. They used mostly former cup cars, Cale Yarborough was a team owner at the time and “borrowed” one of his cars, you could see 66 Dick Trickle on the dash, Junior Johnson you could make out 22 Sterling Marlin on the dash and Richard Childress has an Earnhardt car an adaptation today I would envision gen 6 cup cars, probably a lot floating around now, and put crate engines in them to keep costs and speed down. Also use only short tracks and or infield 1/4 mile tracks like at Charlotte, Atlanta etc. Nothing bigger than Richmond. I was actually thinking earlier today about a NASCAR Senior Tour companion event. 10 races 15 ish car races Charlotte Atlanta Texas Kansas Vegas LA Martinsville Richmond Wilkesboro Nashville. 10 tracks, 10 Companion events on the actual track or the infield short track.

    As far as the wreck goes, that was back in the day when information and access to drivers was like a drop in the bucket compared to nowadays. Charlie Glotzbach was a better driver, but he didn't have a famous dad or a well known racing last name so he is barely remembered.

    This race was a great idea for its time. The previous year in this event was very fun to watch and I loved the throwback feel that ESPN added to it before Throwback races was even a regular thing. It would be awesome to see this event come back, but I think it would be hosted at a different track like maybe North Wilkesboro Speedway that recently was resurrected. The sad part is that the drivers who were in their prime in the 60's and 70's are up in age that I dont think they would physically be able to race. So probably the field would be filled with more drivers that was in their prime in the 80's and 90's.

    • @JakeSimRacing
      @JakeSimRacing  5 місяців тому +1

    As someone who also was born in the 90s, the other thing apart from this crash that I will always associate with Charlie Glotzbach was a lap record of his from the 60s that stood all the way until at least 2012. I think Denny Hamlin took the record the very next year with the lighter and higher-downforce new Gen 6 car. Glotzbach is credited with the Bristol lap record in NASCAR The Game: Inside Line, at least the Wii port I had. Although they did spell his name wrong, calling him "Goltzbach."
