    I have the same exact tiller. I use it for a tiller, shovel, and a rake. You can rake the soil back into a pile much faster than using a shovel or rake. It will dig holes for planting trees and it's great for weeding the garden along with tilling in the spring/fall. It's amazing.

    I have had my Mantis since around 2003-2005.. It works great When I moved to 500 ft above sea level from 56 ft, it needed adjusting.. I came here and found answers, I overhauled it for $12.00 and itis running smooth. Iver 15 years I think I got my money's worth and I am not done yet.

    I'm renting a Mantis Tiller from Home Depot tomorrow to till my garden and weed a flower bed and I was so happy to find that Mike & Justin had a video on how to use it because I had no clue!

    I like mine. It is a good tool for what it does. Other larger tillers might serve another persons needs better but the little Mantis certainly works well for me.

    Thanks again Mike for your videos. I just used my Mantis the first time tonite. Early Spring here, and plenty of time to work the garden a few times It is tuff working on new areas covered with grass, as I am expanding the garden, but it is a workhorse. I use my hula hoe also, but haven't combined the two yet! I will be using my garden spade also, so Mike is a good salesman, and his experience will make my life easier!

    What I like my
    Mantis tiller for in addition to cultivating my garden is to aerate my yard. I just give it enough throttle for it to scoot across the grass. I don’t let it stay in one spot very long. Just enough to break up the top layer of the soil. I have a few places where water likes to stand after a hard rain and these areas will bake into concrete when it dries. Not any more. The aeration of the soil allows the water to drain into the soil instead of ponding on top of it.

    They make great hole diggers for fruit trees, especially, but makes easy work planting any yard plant. It is nothing to dig an 15-18” deep hole for a big apple tree. You can also use it to mix together peat and soil to use to plant the apple tree.

    I have used both a mantis and older troy built "horse" tillers extensively. I currently have a mantis corded electric tiller I use on our small urban lot and it is quite valuable in prepping beds and loosening soil. The mantis isn't really as efficient as larger rear tine tillers for larger jobs but it gets into places the big tillers can't.

    That's an amazing little tiller Mr. Mike. I have been on the fence about buying one for my garden but didn't know how truly effective it was considering its size. Great video as always!

  • @kingachybraky
    @kingachybraky 10 років тому +1

    They work great. If they ball up, turn the tines around and they will self clean. Too damn cool.

  • @elylesable
    @elylesable 2 роки тому

    I own a Mantis and have had it for several years. Most Mantis owners do not know that if you turn the tines one way, they are designed to scratch the surface more and if you turn them the other way they are designed to dig. I noticed on yours one tine is turned to dig, and the other is turned to scratch. The tines are directional, and both need to be turned the same way.

    The proof of how great these tillers are is they are next to impossible to get a good deal buying them used. They can be hard to start as others said, just get the engine serviced. I also had to replace the clutch. Once it worked great I couldn't stop using it. I have a very small backyard and it is 90% garden thanks to the Mantis!

    I've valued your opinion on everything Mike, so went and picked up one of these tillers. The first one I purchased the axle stopped turning after 2 min of use. Took it apart tried to reseat the motor and nothing. So returned it and got a replacement, second one I got used it for probably one minute the axle ended up moving over sheared off the cotter pin. Tightened the axle up reinstalled the tines and same thing so returned that unit and got my money back. I'm not sure if they are having some quality control issues but so far not to impressed that's unacceptable

    I use mine to move dirt. It is addictive. I just keep stroking away. I do have a hard time starting sometimes but once it is warmed up it will restart easily. I am sure that I don't maintain it properly. I bought it for a hundred bucks from a coworker almost 10 yrs ago. Also bought a bigger tiller from her cheap. She wanted them gone badly. Glad to steal, oops, help her out. My bad...

    The Mantis seems a lot like my Honda mini tiller. I have an FG110 and use it for just about everything in my gardens. Have you ever compared the Honda to the Mantis? They are about the same size.

  • @randywright3148

    I much prefer the 4-stroke Honda FG110 tiller. The Mantis bounces way too much to suit me, plus it has no wheels, & no depth bar. I guess if you prefer tilling backwards the Mantis is what you need.

    I watched this with interest. I have a one acre orchard in Scotland wich used to grow Victoria plum trees, but most are dying off due to age. I want to concentrate on soft berry fruits so will need to till a numbe of areas as I have tried planting more fruit trees but we have a lot of canker in our valley. Any advice on soft berry growing and propogation would also be very much appreciated.

    I've had this about four months and have found it to be an aggressive and powerful rig. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxjo0FLo5z3Y_qUcT3vSlOqpMaMdFjvsXa I've used several others in the past and the Sun Joe surpasses these, easily. I note that several people have commented that it bounces on rocky and compacted soil. I believe that would be the case with all tillers - the ground does need to be "broken", either with a larger tractor type unit or with a shovel, and rocks need to be removed. I'm living on a Pike silt loam here in the midwest and the Sun Joe turns my garden to bug dust in two quick passes. I use a technique where I do a short 2 foot run then pull it back and let it go over it again.

    I love my Mantis also. But after each run, spring and Fall, dang thing wouldn't throttle up without stalling. Its the stupid ethanol (hope spelling is right), I now only run airplane fuel in it. Has not failed to start since, course, its only since spring this year, but fires every time, I do it just to make sure the thing will start . The carb was so clogged up, from ethanol, the corn crap is bad. Humm? Wonder what it does to our bodies? Gumm our intestine"s up for sure. Don't want to hear none of you corn farmers, because you aint got shit, but it. after all we all eat corn and it comes right out. Sure not all but part. we all can say yes to that? Ever eat a burger and part of it still intact pops out? NO so go think about it. not knocking corn, I love sweet corn.

    • @christinedewing4577
      @christinedewing4577 4 роки тому

      The faster you move over an area, the shallower the blades go; I'd avoid the area with pipes, just as a safety measure, even if you shovel the soil, you can hit the pipes at that depth.

    A friend gave me a Mantis Tiller because he couldn't start it. I bought a carb kit and rebuilt it and it still wouldn't run. New filter and fuel lines still wouldn't run. I bought a new carb and now it runs but I can only start it cold. I have to get the job done and keep it running. Once it's hot it will not start again. Fundamentally the tool works great but I hate it. It is the only two cycle I own that causes me to want to use illegal substances. I have a 30 year old Craftsman String Trimmer and it never fails to start. What is wrong with this Mantis Carb design? Or is the Mantis design good but it doesn't work well with the alcohol they add to the gas now?

      Pong Wang Maybe you can but at least I have it somewhat functional now. Mine floods easily. You cannot leave the choke on after it first tries to start. I pull the choke out and crank until it almost runs then shut off the choke. If you keep pulling it will flood and you either have to remove the plug and dry out the cylinder and plug or put the thing away until the following day. At least as far as mine goes it is the worst 2 cycle machine for starting I have ever owned. Now when it runs it is awesome at what it does but what a pain it is to get started. .

    I feel compelled to disagree. I hate mine and never use it. Wish I had bought an actual tiller. This thing just cuts dirt and you have to work the hell out of it to do any actual "tilling". If you have a bad back or tennis elbow forget about it. Love my scuffle hoe though even though I've more or less moved into raised bed gardening because of the aforementioned bad back and tennis elbow. I drank the Kool-Aid regarding the Mantis and regret it.

    According to Paul Gautschi, you should never till your soil. Just lay down 8 inches of leaves, wood chips, hay, or whatever material you have on the ground in the fall, and then pull back the material in the spring to plant in the soil. Each year the soil improves and you won't have to water, fertilize or "pesticize." Always keep the soil covered.
