I had this exact model in the early '90's I loved it! As I recall, there was a sequence to follow. 7 pumps on the choke, 4 pulls with the adjustment on the side one way, and 3 pulls with it slid the other way. That's from a cold start. I wish I had kept it.

@@Thomas-fo9zu I have a 24 inch double sided blade, (cuts on both sides). They made longer single side cutters. Going on memory, can't find my manual. I also have an edger for sidewalks and a crevice cleaner for fracture lines in cement. Edger is just a straight toothed tine wheel, and crevice cleaner is a stiff wire wheel. They mount on one side and have a wheel for the other. Edger and cleaner are ok, but I am very impressed with hedge trimmer. Used it a lot, will cut through pretty thick stuff, never any problems.

My father bought one these back around 1990 and I still have and use it. About 5 years ago it needed a new bulb, cost around $10 from Mantis. They used to sell them via magazine and TV commercial...you couldn't find them in stores. The old ones have a grease nipple on the front of the gear box and the tines are reversible for tilling or mulching. I have a 20x30ft garden that it broke the ground one some 16yrs ago and I still use it for new flower beds ect. Great little tools that are built to last. You have to sort of operate them as if you were water skiing, that is, lean back and let it dig as you sway slightly from side to side.

James: I had the SAME problem on my Mantis engiine.
When I went to put on the NEW rubber pumper bulb, the screws would NO LONGER REACH the carb body threads.
I ended up buying TWO different lengths of new screws to fit.
The flange on the new rubber pumper bulbs are THICKER than the originals.
And as such need longer screws.

I put mantis aerator tines on my Mantis, yesterday and they work fine. I am going to overseed parts of my lawn, today after I finish aerating all of it. Grass does get hung up on the tines but it only takes a little bit to remove it. I have a set of weed reducers but they are on my power tines. These, keep weeds, grass and roots from getting between the tines and the gear case.

I borrowed one of these mantis tillers some years ago.... they work quite well, and really are the "ticket" for small jobs. 2-stroke carbs I find to be extra "fiddly"... SOO nice that the fix-up kit was available. Also good news that the aftermarket carb did an OK job.

She had been turning it with a shovel for several years. I chewed it up and got all the treee roots out of it with an axe. Hardest soil I have ever tilled but the little fellow did a good job in that hard, red clay. I folded it up and put it in the back of my CRV with a full tank of gas. It burned most of the tank. It started on the first pull after sitting out in the cold for two days. It is nothing like the 916 Husqvarna that I used to have but it is light and handy.. it also does a good job on small areas. I got her winter garden planted, yesterday.

Long time Mantis user - you need to make sure the tines are easily removable. If put away for the season with vegetation in the tines the vegetation attracts moisture and the tines will rust weld in place. So, remove, sand the shaft and lightly grease.

Long grass will really load up the tines. I just pull the times off and remove the grass. Roots are a little bit harder to get off but they come off easier with the tunes off. They make a set of weed preventers that fit on the hub side of the tines that are supposed to prevent weeds from getting between the tines and the transmission. I am going to get a set for my Mantis and if they work ok I will get a set for my daughters new Mantis.😊

Bought my Mantis back in 2003 when I was living in NJ. It's now 2022 and I've been living in Georgia since 2005. Gone through 2 Amazon carb kits since '03 and it's still going strong. It's a powerful little bugger that always surprises people when they see it in action. Just be sure to run all the gas out of it before storing for winter or it'll gum up when you go to start it in the spring.

Never had a Mantis, but I use Premium, non ethanol fuel in everything I own two cycle. I never have a carb problem. I do run my two cycle stuff empty at the end of the year if they are going into storage condition. I like Echo Red Armor or Power Blend Gold two cycle oil at 50:1 with a good stabilizer in the gas. I just got back from Marietta turning my youngest daughters garden with my little Troy Built cultivator. It is four cycle, so I treat it like a lawn mower. Never turned over such hard clay soil in my life. It hopped like a rabbit until I got all the roots cut out with an axe. We planted some cold vegetables, yesterday. I soaked them with PB and used a big three jaw puller to get them off. I wire wheeled the drive shaft and lathered up the shafts with copper based anti sieve. They will come off easy, now. This gives you a wheel at the front for easy transport..
and two handles at the rear of the skeleton "barrow" to control the augur...

The portion of the fuel line with the white cap (for venting) should be inserted vertically into the notch/bulge of the recoil housing. (Just above the carb between the fuel tank and carb). This will prevent dirt and debris from getting inside your tank. At 11:46 the throttle cable is shown in front of the notch/bulge on the recoil housing. Any way great video. Thanks for sharing

What a nice kit from Hipa! I'm hearing great things about this company. We just picked up one of these tillers from a friend who thought it needed a carb. It started right up and with a carb adjustment, I think it will be just fine for our 2 small herb beds out front. Thank you for sharing James, love to see these older pieces brought back into use!

I think you need to tighten the handle bolts on the engine. I see one looser than the other. I tightened mine, yesterday, when I put on a kickstand. You will need 7/16” on both the nut and the bolt. I also put new carriage bolts on my handles, where they bend. I got them a 1/2” longer and put locknuts on their ends, just like the latest Mantis tillers. I know because I put my daughter’s new Mantis 7924 for her last weekend. She loves her new MNTIS.

  • @johnclarke6647
    @johnclarke6647 7 місяців тому

When I replaced the fuel grommet in my Mantis, I pulled the tank off. It made replacing the grommet and fuel lines a lot easier. I had to replace the fuel tank because it had several holes in it when I got it. I also put a little Dawn on the grommet before inserting it in the tank. Soap is better than oil on rubber because oil can deteriorate rubber. I keep a spray bottle of Dawn and water handy for such things, as well as pressure testing engines with my Mighty Vac. It takes several days running to get new carbs running at their optimal conditions, because carburator diaphragms take a while to loosen up and pump correctly.

Although Mantis calls it a tiller, it's actually a cultivator which is meant to mix up soil that is already broken up. A tiller breaks up soil that never been worked before, so it has larger, beefier tines. Never doubted you would get it running. Keep up the great work!

I have this exact same tiller and the carb on it is trashed and barely runs. I got it to sort of run enough to do the garden. I bought one of these clone kits off amazon and used it to fix another mantis tiller. These do not come pre-tuned, I had to tune it myself to get it to run right and I did. I'll have to order up another one of those carb kits for my mantis. Won't be needing it as summer is over and the garden has already been winterized but there's next spring.
EDIT: 21:30 The tines on my tiller spun too when I was adjusting the carb and idle speed but they stopped when I put a screwdriver on them. They barely had any force when idling and when you put the tiller on the ground when idling the tines stopped but when you revved it up it dug into the ground.

Good call. Getting the right aftermarket carb can be tricky since they make a lot of "one size fits all", but when you get the right one the aftermarket 2 stroke carbs are usually pretty reliable and they are so cheap it's almost never worth rebuilding one.

Don't adjust the idle with the low side jet. Turn the low side in until the highest RPM is achieved and then back it out slightly so it's not at full lean, then adjust the idle screw to lower the RPM.
