Move Your Camera With Your Model to Get Incredible Portraits | Mark Wallace

- Опубліковано 12 лип 2024
- In this episode, Mark Wallace shows you how to create unique portraits by moving your camera instead of the light. Set your key light at a single position, and then move your camera with your model to capture different angles, lighting styles, and moods.
First, Mark captures images while his model poses, then Mark moves left, right, up, and down to get more dramatic results. Finally, Mark moves in a circle around his model to get maximum variation in his shots.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING! - Навчання та стиль
No complicated terms.l or tiles. Just pure play of light and composition. One of the best tutorials I've seen in a while
It's great to see how comfortable the model is around you Mark!
Fantastic photos! This model is unbelivably beautiful. The colombian woman are stunning!!
That was excellent. Simple and exploring. Getting out of the usual, standard, and let's say it, the safe approach. All were great shots, but the ones that included the edge of the light really added a storytelling sense. On another note. We watch these photographers that most of us have never met yet end up feeling like we're on a first name basis with them. That's when the videos are connecting. This was a really beautiful exercise in minimalist studio photography. Instead of controlling the light it was more like the photographer, model, and the light were in a flowing dance. More an enjoyable thing to watch than an instructional video while giving great inspiration and instruction.
A good one Mark and Karen. You have convinced me to try this, if we can ever get past this COVID problem. My studio was only used a few times last year, and then only for shoots of my family. I hope we don't ever have to face another year like 2020.
I always enjoy your videos. Thanks so much for posting!🙏
Perfect. Great, straight to the point. Photos are gréât, model is gorgeous.
Thanks Mark, love your videos! You’re an excellent photographer and excellent instructor who always explains things so well!
I really liked these shots. I wasn't expecting this from this set and one light. Great tutorial Mark and muy Lindo Trabajo a la modelo...

Great helpful video and fantastic model. Her bubbly personality and energy reminds me of Marisa Roper from Daniel Norton's videos.

Mark - you're great. Great photographer, great teacher and I think a genuinely nice guy. Adorama is very good at choosing really good people to represent them, and that's important. This was a fun shoot and I am going to do one just like it soon as I can!
Awesome as always!! 🎉🎉🎉

thank you both to the very inspirational model and yourself very captivating work
I used to work for a commercial photographer and he used to say, "Let's go shopping!", which meant same thing as what Mark is referring to moving left, right, low angle, etc, etc or looking for different angles! ...Thanks Jim!

Thank you very much!
Excellent
Hi Mark,
This is a fantastic episode, concentrating on getting photographers to move their shooting position and this is true for landscapes, travel and street as well as studio. Using the 50mm prime in this session meant that you had to "zoom with your feet". Something I noticed as Karen walked on set in the bandeau was that her loop was not tucked in, and than as the shoot progressed I realised that you just wanted a clean neckline and shoulders. But maybe there is a topic which can be explored, the tiny things which can be fixed in seconds but take minutes to fix in post. Garment loops, pony tail bands on wrists and equipment intruding in the frame, all need time to clean from the image. And post is too expensive. I cut loops off garments in my studio wardrobe but I I don't cut the hands off models.
Excellent..
Sure, when you have a model like that. It’s simple. Great job and video. Hate multi light setups
Awesome
was very intrigued by the concept of ''partial'' photos (chin, or shoulder, or you name it), but you ...forgot to take such shots haha! :) never mind. great video anyways.
Hola Mark!
Excelentes tus videos.
Son muy didácticos y divertidos.
Me gustó mucho éste!
Gracias por compartir tus conocimientos.
Aprendo mucho con vos y con tu colega Gavin Hoey alias "SUBSCRIBE"!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Un gran abrazo desde la ciudad de Rosario en Argentina!!!
Gosh I am so late to see this episode! With those camera settings and small softbox with a grid I was expecting a completely black background and floor
Excellent video (as always)! Do you experience any problems with distortion with a 50mm lens when you are shooting in very close?
Thanks again for posting this. 🙏🙏🙏 Very well done!
Genial,,,
Good and fun
Great !
I like your set up, which pro-foto trigger on the M 10 do you have? great shots
Is it the F/8 &/or lighting distance that gives you the great skin texture?
Skin texture is basically shadows, and there isn't really a magic distance, because the skin is a huge determining factor.
Good lighting don't fix bad skin.
The f stop is going to determine how much is in focus from front to back, aka Depth of field.
Thanks Mark - great vid - I guess shot pre-Covid?
Nice exercise.
Great shots, let Karen know I love her shoes! Also a tip from one old guy to another knee pads for a long session like this.
Boy, that is the truth. Knee pads or having small kneeling pads around the studio so knees are saved from the usual concert studio floors. Getting eye level is often the most flattering vantage point. Flattery however is fine for client images but model images are usually intended for a message or expression.
Hi Mark,,, Love watching you n Gavin shooting,,, best content on Adorama,,, Question: I notice you had a grid on your softbox,,, If you brought your model further forward with the Lightsource would that eliminate light spill on the backdrop,,, but maybe make the backdrop go darker or even black,,, I ask because I dont have a grid for my softboxes ,,, and also dose it matter what size and shape the softboxes are,,, Many Thanks Great images by the way and Iv'e added Karen on Instagram
That would work, yes, or just feather the softbox so it's pointed away from the background. You just have to be careful of spill and bouncing off walls etc.
Softbox size does have an effect, but the most important thing is *relative* size: a small softbox up really close will be softer than a giant one far away.
hello, Mark, and congratulations on the good pictures. A courtesy if you can. You could tell me the model and the brand of the exposometer you used in this video. You know I have Prophoto, but my Sekonic L 478DR model can't synchronize it with Prophoto.
Thank you in advance and happy New Year🤝🍾🍸
Great instruction. The strobe did not go off on some shots
Great Video Mark and karen. How did you decide what setting you wanted. I know what you said in the beginning, But someone inexperience like me. How would I know how to start my settings. To get this effect?
Just copy his setting, with the exception of the shutter speed, because some cameras can only synchronize with the monolight/strobelight at 1/125. Check the specification of your camera and write it down at about this size of font, on a self-stick label and stick it on the back of your camera to remind you. Some photographers like the background very blurry, so they use a wider aperture of their lens, like f2.8, f1.2. I also use a hand-held light meter that can read monolight/strobelight output on incident mode, as well as incident mode without flash, and reflected reading with/without flash, as well as cine (video light) mode. Some photographers don't even use handheld light meters nowadays.
What, how are you got to Colombia , hey brother are you a resident in Colombia ? You must be having fun everyday in Medellin , good job team
What would happen if you didn't put a grid?
Beautiful pictures by the way!
A softbox and grid are beyond my budget, could similar results be gained using a speedlight and umbrella?
I love Karen!
Mark, one of your best! Noticed the t-shirt. Do u also ride motorcycles? @getoutmotos
You could say that 😉 www.markonabike.com
Very cool. If you make it to Utah hit me up. Let's ride.
