3 Quick Fixes For Your Uninspiring Portraits | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

- You’re not alone. Every portrait photographer does this from time to time. You set up some safe, sensible lighting and you take perfectly OK portraits. It’s only after the photo session that you realize you played it far too safe and your photos are uninspiring.
It’s a scenario photographer Gavin Hoey knows from first-hand experience but he also has 3 ways to shake up your studio portraits by changing just 1 thing!
For the first set-up, Gavin takes a classic 45-degree lighting position and moves his light to 90 degrees. He also gets his light much, much close to his model. The results are dramatic!
Next Gavin takes his white vinyl flooring and repurposes it as a fake wall. Switching from color to black and white mode on his camera he creates portraits with mood and character without moving his light.
Finally, Gavin takes a two-flash key and fill lighting set-up to the next level. Rummaging around in his prop box Gavin finds a couple of children’s tutus which his model wears as a neck ruff.

Thanks John 👍
THE BEST teacher by far, simple, easy to follow...excellent
Wow, what an excellent result with so little equipment. This is what I always teach my students...
Little is More!
Hi Victor. I find more is usually more but also sometimes the more I have the slower I move 😉
I learned creative lighting techniques, and I love this "subscribe" sign popping up, very creative.
Great ideas Gavin! Love it!
Gavin you are a legend! Not that simple but you give hope :)
Thanks Saku. Not sure I can make it much more simple then "move the light" 😉
Enjoyed the video...Gavin is great at what he does and keeps everything simple and understandable.
WOW I truly enjoyed this video! VERY creative and doable! Thank you Gavin
Thanks for sharing.
Solution : Have a Sophie?
Works for me Kim 😉

Great stuff!
Excellent video! Great, simple set-ups and loved the idea of the child's tutu as a ruff! And Sophie doesn't take a bad photo, either!
Gavin, I do like your videos because you are very creative. You show us that we can do so much with little means. I enjoy following you since the very beginning of your first channel "Gavtrain" ;)
Thank you both, great inspiration helps to overcome that “I haven’t got the kit” complaint. Thanks so much.
great teacher!!! great MOdel 😍
i love your work, i'm a fan.
thanks to all of you who share your knowledge.
Making the art of lighting less mysterious, many thanks 🙏
As my models are not professionals, Having some ideas to spice up a bit the shooting is more than welcome. Thanks Gav!
Gavin, when I watch your videos I like to imagine that I'm taking photography classes with Austin Powers. Thanks for the lessons, you are the best!
Hi Gavin!!! You are a Genius!!! Thanks for sharing!!! Grettings from Rosario in Argentina.
Giorgio

Amazing, amazing video. So simple, so easy thanks Gavin
Thank you for sharing your knowledge of photography. Some great ideas that I will definitely use
Brilliant as always, I wouldn't have thought of using two children's tutus as a ruff 😀
It's a fine line between genius and ridiculous Beverley but it's nice to be on the right side every so often 😁
❤ As always a great video with great ideas, love that show
Awesome results with thinking outside the box Thank you!
Another great one! Thanks for the inspiration!
Love your creativity, so fun too!
Amazing tips, Thanks so much
Awesome !!! Love these ideas !!!
Gavin, you're the best!
Gavin always impresses. Thanks for the tips
This is stunning. What a learning!
You rock! Amazing love your work! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Your creative thinking is inspiring! Using simple things in simple ways to achieve good stuff. Makes me think what I have at home I could throw in next time I shoot. Thanks for these videos! Never stop making them 😅
Random things used out of context can sometimes work surprisingly well Zoltán 😉😉
Inspiring as always!!!! Thank you!!
Great video as always
Always and always You are the master 👏
Cool! Enjoy watching your video's.
Awesome as usual Gavin. You're my fav photographer and you explain things so well and your photos look great, to me!
Thanks for the kind words Richard 👍
Gavin is just the best❤
your amazing Gavin!
Thanks for the various ideas. Great for future shoots. Must try the over-head strip box again; it can be very dramatic, as you and Sophie have shown. Did like the small shadow on Sophie from the flooring - really gave depth to the image. The silver/metallic tutu was brilliant in terms of colour/texture. As always, well done to everyone !
Thanks Alan. The best bit (for me) was me handing a tutu to Sophie and her not think I was crazy 😉
Fabulous, quick, great learning
Thanks Gavin! These are (of course) great ideas. Their value lies in the inspiration, not necessarily your specific suggestions. Your point is clear, step out of the "normal" box. I'll apply your lesson!
Spot on David, that's exactly what I hoped to convey 🙂
Brilliant!
Nice work Gavin 😎👌🏾. Thank you.
Beautiful image mate 😊😊
Gavin. I’ve watched a couple videos of you with Sophi. I wouldn’t play basketball against her if I were you. Great video.
Always and always You are the master
Super video Gavin
Thank you
Brilliant!!
Thank you!! ❤
Great video Gavin
Really great... love watching Gavin's videos .. makes me want to go and take photos (as opposed to go and buy new gear)
Gavin, I don't know how you do it man, but you make this all look so easy. I'm so nervous about doing studio portraits and failing at it that it paralyzed me from doing it. Then I watch your videos and you show how simple it is and I get inspired to at least try.
Thank you for all the great work that you do.
I fail all the time, in fact that genius idea I thought I had rarely ever looks exactly how I planned. Try, fail, adjust, repeat 😉
Start with a model that's friendly like a sibling or parent!!
@@tumblingrosesstudio Or a new model who is just starting out themselves and it's explained to them that you are new too and they'll be more patient when they aren't being charged for portfolio shots.
Great photography sir ,thanks u .
very cool , i spent the day working with the settings on my speedlite now im looking for a place to shoot
amazing ... thanks ❣❣❣💯💯
Gavin, your videos are always fun and educational. I always learn something new. This time, I'd like to ask about your tethering setup with a tablet. Could you share more about it?
Thanks a lot!
I want a Sophie! 😂
Makes things easier.
Gavin your the King. I have really enjoyed your tips and ur experiments..it inspires!
Top notch video, as usual, Gavin!
In my next life I wanna be Gavin's assistant 😄📸
Great video!
great stuff.
Thanks' for sharing 🌹
Amazing video
Great!
Great Video
I love the way you teach!
Thank you Joris 👍
Another great Video - I have a question. I am new to portraits. It seems like my lights are always in my shots. Is it because I am just using speed lights - if I use a stronger light source would that work to back them up. Or am I just setting it up wrong from the beginning. Thank you
Super work sir .. m from India and follow your video
Hi, thanks for the great live shows - where can I find a schedule for live Gavin shows on this channel and on Adorama?
New sub!
Hi Gavin. love the videos and shots. can you tell me what the external monitor set up is you are using please. Thanks
i tried to replicate this with the same size of strip box with grid but the be is still wide. how do you make it narrow?
Beautiful, as always! Question: Sophie seemed to be close to the white wall background and I'm surprised that even at 1/250th shutter speed the wall was so gray and sometimes black. How far was she from the background so that the spill can be kept at a minimum???
Spot on yet again.can I ask can you buy those strip boxes in the UK rather than import from the US.
love all the videos Gavin, i know all your gear listed is go to Adorama but when you go there they don't ship to the UK ? or do they ship under another name ? cheers Kevin
The images you show directly after taking the shot, are they SOOC or not? Great content as always. Cheers.
