- Hercules is a 1997 American animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation for Walt Disney Pictures. The 35th Disney animated feature film and the eighth animated film produced during the Disney Renaissance, the film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. The film is loosely based on the legendary hero Heracles (known in the film by his Roman name, Hercules), the son of Zeus, in Greek mythology.
Development of Hercules began in 1992 following a pitch adaptation of the Heracles mythological stories by animator Joe Haidar. Meanwhile, Clements and Musker re-developed their idea for Treasure Planet (2002) following the critical and commercial success of Aladdin (1992). Their project was removed from development in 1993, and Musker and Clements joined Hercules later that same year. Following an unused treatment by Haidar, Clements and Musker studied multiple interpretations of Greek mythology before abandoning Zeus's adulterous affair with Alcmene. The project underwent multiple story treatments and a first script draft was inspired by the screwball comedy films of the classic Hollywood era and popular culture of the 1990s. Donald McEnery, Bob Shaw, and Irene Mecchi were brought on board to revise the script. British cartoonist Gerald Scarfe was recruited as production designer and produced over seven hundred visualization designs of the characters. Research trips to Greece and Turkey provided inspiration for the background designs. Animation for the film was done in California and Paris. Computer animation was used in several scenes, predominantly in the Hydra battle sequence.
Can you believe it took them 3 years to animate this one battle? It was worth every year!
Let me give you a reason the sample was ahead of its time

It really took them that long!?
@@JeffreyBarkdull Yup. The integration of 3D with 2D was the real challenge. It was still in its infancy.

god help us when this gets approved to be remade for "Modern" audience
fun fact, when Hades says "relax it's only halftime" that is the exact halfway point through the movie lol.
Does this also mean it's like a football game?
@@julianrojas907something like that.
I’ll never get over how epic it was seeing him break out of the claw. The music is everything
Alan Menken at his best
Nor I when he smashed the mountain.
God of sigmachads moments 🍷
I honestly felt Hercules didn't expect himself to survive smashing the mountain either.
Gotta love the crowd's reaction. First, the golf clap, then 1:40 the congrats clap, and then 4:10 the eruption of cheers. Don't think I've seen more character development in the span of 6 minutes in any other movie.
This a good reminder that a lot can happen in just minutes or less.
This movie will never get old.
Until Quarantine, the last time I watched Hercules was 2008 my first semester as a high schooler
0:21- That Hydra roar is one of the most badass sounds I remember from my childhood!😁
At 0:51 the Hydra's shriek of pure rage always gets me you could tell it wasn't at all happy with its head colliding into the ground
Me too
The sound effects of the Hydra were from a Tasmanian Devil and apparently that sound effect was also used for the Trolls in the 1988 film, _Willow._
It gave me nightmares how bendy the mouth was

3:23 it felt like Zeus was showing Hercules how to defeat the Hydra.
Yes!
oh wow
Omg!! What a cool touch, never noticed that

Zeus: Do I have to do everything for you?!
Without a doubt the #1 best scene in Disney's Hercules considering that it shows him fighting a giant hydra. Add to the fact that the fight takes place in front of a big audience makes this scene even more iconic and unforgettable.
Not only that, the Hydra was the monster that came the closest to defeating Hercules. Unlike the case with the Cyclops, Hercules had his full strength here, yet even with Pegasus flying in to help, the Hydra very nearly managed to eat him at least three times.

Then he proceeds to squeeze pain and panic by their heads under all that heat frying them to a sizzle, which was funny to watch.
I love how the hydra laughs at Hercules, when he hurled the giant boulder at him. It sounds so evil and sinister.
Even Medusa knows how to turn the Hydra to stone.

Another classic case of "We can show as much blood as we want if we just make it a different color, and it's still G-rated."
This movie got away with smoking and an implied R-pist, and still got G. damn this movie was peak disney even the censors were won over.
@@hexmaniac6810 and it’s even one of the most lightearted and humorous Disney movies. Let that sink in.
I think its acid blood
Even after what 20 or 30 yrs this hydra still looks freaking incredible!!!! I especially love it when the hydra regrows it's first 3 heads (2:11) and starts chasing Hercules and we see the chase as pegasus flies in.
Compared to the other Hydra’s that have appeared throughout the entertainment industries history?
@@JeffreyBarkdull compared to others from other media there are obviously superior and better ones, I'm mostly saying the hydra from the movie still looks cool.

Most underrated Disney movie from the classic era. I LOVE this movie.
It took me so long to figure out Zeus was watching this fight. the thunderstorm was such an obvious clue.

4:30 Hades' anger gets me every time 😂
Hades: let's get ready to rumble!
Michael Jordan: oh yeah baby
Keep in mind that this is a still-novice Hercules fighting what is most likely Hades’ best weapon and he still won. After this Hades had no chance of beating him with raw strength
Phil: WILL YOU FORGET THE HEAD SLICING THING?!
Beautifully done, from the crowd barely showing any form of emotion at the start when herc lifts this massive bolder up to help the children, to them giving some slight praise after he beheaded the hydra from within its own neck, to the crowd just absolutely erupting in enthusiasm after Hercules breaks out of the hydras lifeless fist.
3:14 "My favorite part of the game. Sudden death."
4:30 When I'm getting frustrated
When Hercules pound fisted the cliff’s wall causing the rockslide to kill off the Hydra, it reminds me of the scene in Bambi (1942) when adult Bambi killed off the hunters’ hound dogs by causing a rockslide from the cliffs while he made his escape.
Hiring Gerald Scarfe to create the base character designs in this film remains one of the smartest moves Walt Disney Animation has ever made.
I love this movie, but this scene has always freaked me out
Especially now with the CGI on the Hydra.
Sure, it looks dated now but that somehow makes it look all the creepier.
Same this is my 1st most favorite Disney movie and this scene still scares me
Luckily I felt unphased. I’ve seen scarier from the Mouse House
I prefer the Hydra to start our with 5 or 7 or 9 heads, because I think a Hydra isn't a Hydra if it's not multi-headed. The Hydra is also my favorite Greek Mythology Monster.
What is clever about this scene is the hydra is CGI and the rest of the film is hand drawn, genius!
2:59: “PHIL! I DON’T THINK WE COVERED THIS ONE IN BASIC TRAINING!!!” I love how Hercules yells that as he’s sliding down the Hydra’s back. 😂
it's so weird seeing a one-headed hydra. like, having lots of heads is kinda a hydra's whole deal
I think either Hades or the Hydra Scare me as a Kid but I later watch the movie and face my Fears.
👊🔥
I'd Say the Hydra.
Hercules: phil, i need a sword! Find me a sword!
Phil: Kid, the last thing you use to defeat the hydra as a sword, you got enough mouths to feed already!
3:28, 3:29
Anglerfish’s sound.
Will You Forget The Head-Slicing Thing?
Some scenes, specially 3:10 and 3:19 were probably inspired by Lion King.
Hercules later wears a skin of Scar!
3:13 Hydra: give it up that’s because your about to die with my power of poison of darkness, Hercules.
That's A Hot Headache For Pain & Panic
Get up on the Hydra’s back!
Looks like Medusa must turn the Hydra to stone so Hercules forgets the head-slicing thing.
3:15 The Shadow Queen's favorite part of the game is me dying in reality
That was an Intense scene
Apparently The sound effects of the Hydra were from a Tasmanian Devil
I have almost 30 years but find this scary
That scene was amazing
Hercules scream is hilarious 😂 Phil I dont think we cover this one in basic training
Fun Fact: In the original myth, the Hydra could only regenerate two heads at a time, unlike here, where it seems to vary between three and five.
starts with three and very time a head is cut off, two grow in its place.
So we just keep chopping away at it then! It can't keep regenerating its noggins forever.
@@stephenbyrne2170 It would probably kill you before then. The way Heracles defeated it was by having his nephew Ioalus torch the neck stumps to cauterize the wound and prevent regeneration.
@knightofarkronia9968 how did the nephew manage to get in there before the regeneration? it's regeneration seems rather instant.
YOU DID IT KID! YOU WON BY A LANDSLIDE 🔥
3:00-3:05 would sure make an excellent Disney ride! 😁
Can anyone count how many Hydra Heads I’m seeing right now at 2:48, because I can’t?

3:19 Hydra: PREPARE TO DIE FROM HELL OF DARKNESS, HERCULES! You’re finished!!

That's the best part
Hades mad what else is new. It's a default setting for him.

Phil: *"WILL YOU FORGET THE HEAD SLICING THING!?!"*
An excellent monster movie's scene.
😆
1:28 Away of its time
It will never not bug me that he has one head and regenerates three or more. Hydra starts with three heads and gains two heads (one extra) for every head lost.
I don’t think we covered this in basic training. Yeah, you never made it to the super advanced part of my course because everybody’s got a hydra.
This movie is just like Percy Jackson
Just imagine if Hera helped the Hydra
