The odds of an average golfer making an ace are roughly one in 100,000, while stats suggest a European Tour pro's chances are closer to one in 2,500. One year on from Edoardo Molinari’s valiant, emotional attempt in Italy and ahead of this week's Nedbank Golf Challenge, we asked three-time European Tour winner Brandon Stone to go a couple of thousand better. With a day and 500 balls to play with on a 184-yard par three, could he beat the odds and find that one, perfect shot? Here's what happened...

Wrong technique. No use hitting "darts". Should hit a club or two longer, take off the gas and pitch in front letting it roll up to the flag; there is landing space there to do this. A ball rolling up the green has much more chance than one dropping on it, even with bad bounces. Anyone who practices chip and run shots will routinely hole many and know what I mean. The rolling ball "explores" more ground. As long as your not short every ball with enough speed to pass the hole has some sort of chance if remotely on line.

@@SearchBucket2 Totally correct. A buddy's mother has something like aces. Low trajectory, ball rolls when it hits the green so she covers a much larger percentage of the green.

Pretty sure he wanted the ball to cut more than it was
In golf a cut means the ball curves slightly to the right, so he probably wanted the ball to fade/cut a little

When I was a junior at Centurion Brandon was pretty good on the mashie as a 6/7 year old. His father Kevin was the club pro. Hearing Brandon talk now, I hear Kevin's voice. The similarity is uncanny. He was a fierce competitor back then and pushed himself to try and beat is teenagers on the mashie, and sometimes did. Go Brandon. I hope you win some majors down the line.

Its harder than you think! I tried this last year, I did at as a fundraiser I called “Hole in One for Hospice” here in Victoria, BC Canada. 120 yards, pouring rain, well over 2000 balls in one day, probably more than 50 within 3/5 feet and exactly 0 holes in one - SO frustrating. But I raised over $10,000 by myself :)

Impressive effort and shows how much luck is a factor! Golf is such a weird game! I’ve played so many rounds and never made a hole in one - but both of my Brothers made their first HIO last year, only months after they started playing! Unfair 😏😁
Normal.Nearly all hole in ones by amataurs are miss hit shots were they roll in the hole.I played for over 20 years.only ever came close was bad hit shot.Look at the par 3 challenge at the masters,they put the pin were the ball landing will roll towards the hole.On an elevated tee like this video.there is less chance,because the ball will not roll.

Nah boss, this is a guy who cares and is obviously very passionate about this sport. He REALLY wanted this. He could have just gone up there, hit his shots and left because what difference does it make to him. Instead he put everything he had into it, and I appreciate that. Good show, really puts in perspective how incredibly tough a hole in one is

It’d be a lot easier using a 7 or 6 (something with a bit more roll), as that 8 iron just sticks where it hits... so basically you have to dunk it into the hole. No margin for error.
To paraphrase another maker of videos: "Bloody good shots sir, and some lovely straight lines!"
They need to do this with more golfers!
I work with the Golf mags in the UK, we made a trip to Portugal with 5 players of differing Hcps just to make a hole in one. 1000s of golf balls were hit and not a single hole in one was made, just shows you how much luck is involved. Think how many shots you have ever played to par 3's and how many HIO's you have made... if any!!!! Impressive bacon strips from Brandon though.

I've never seen someone so defeated about sticking a par 3 tee shot 1 foot from the hole. Just didn't have the luck. My brother got a hole in one by landing his tee shot about 10' left of the green and getting a kick to the right that rolled in the hole. Golf is a strange game.

For those interested in the math, if the chances of him making a hole in one on any given shot were indeed 1 in 2500, then the chances of him making a hole in one given 500 shots are about 2 in 11 (roughly 18.1%). So no surprise that these exceptional golfers still can't pull it off.
