  • Neil Greenberg is a world leading expert, and practitioner, in military mental health.
He signed up to the Royal Navy while still in medical school, then travelled the world on ships and submarines, not just attending to crew health but getting stuck into everything else required of an officer to keep a vessel operating successfully.
But it could have been very different, had he not heard a radio interview by chance.
Professor Greenberg tells Kate Gerbeau how the medic of a luxury liner inspired him to mix healthcare with adventure, all with the aim of making a difference.

This is how I remember Neil from officer training 30 years ago - open, friendly, engaging and utterly professional. A really great person who has made a positive difference for so many people.

Really liked how the Doctor made himself part of the team wherever he was posted. He seems like a person who really wants to make a difference.

The correct approach to joining the team, and learning how it works. Also the correct research approach for psychiatry. A smart man.

What a lovely guy and more broadly experienced than he's letting on here. You can see Kate enjoyed speaking to him too.

One of the biggest waste of money in the Royal Navy is the doctors. There are more doctors and dentist than we have ships and bases combined!

Couldn't be the navy without the scab lifters😊

The Navy has high expectations so as a responsible employer it is only right that they invest in physical and mental health.
As a taxpayer, I'm glad that they do.
Dr.Greenburg mentioned the need to share patient data when people leave the service and become veterans so sounds like some doctors are doing important work to uphold the military covenant by caring for veterans, not discarding them...
