    Here’s an old trick to find electromagnetic interference with a radio install. Take a cheap hand held/portable AM/FM radio, cheaper ones are more susceptible to interference. Turn on your radio rig, then turn on the radio to a localish AM station. Hold the radio up to the whole radio install from the tip of the antenna, all along the antenna wire, and all the way to the CB. The radio will freak out with static when near a magnetic interference. You can use this to find any electromagnetic source all over the vehicle that may be causing you trouble.

    USB cables can carry RF and act like an antenna. Get a high quality screened cable and make sure you ground it is grounded. Also ground the case of the CB radio. EDIT: Keep cable runs as short as possible.

    Have you tried using ferite beads as a line choke. Also, the very length of some cords may become resonant at higher frequencies relative to other communication modes such as vhf, uhf, microwave, etc. I ground everything separate and bead coax near the antenna source . Also, Don't use cheap coax, it only causes headaches and shortens the life of your finals.

    Did you ever try to touch the antenna while having a lot of static? The power coming in to the antenna (voltage) somehow gets mixed signals. But if you physically touch it or connect a little 2 core wire (looped) static disappears. You can turn down the squelch almost completely. This really works !

    Yeah I used to work for Schneider and my truck not only had a bad antenna, but they put the CB mounts right on the dash, right where the stereo is, two 12v plugs, I had my 12v cooler, and my built in fridge. So much shit for static, it was pretty bad. Nothing I could do though because I needed a phone charger, and my GPS tablet power plugged in.

    LED lights put out a crap ton of RF. The diode in the lights cause it. You can clear up your signal by installing an inline noise filter on your power supply. Even if you dont think your having much RF interference youd be amazed how quiet the static becomes with a filter. Less RF/static means you can hear distant and faint transmissions better.

    • @vf12497439
      @vf12497439 3 роки тому

      @@bryanwesley154 have you isolated what is making noise interference in your radio? Led lights on? Headlights on? Engine running or not? Do not key up your radio during this test. Unscrew your antenna coaxial. Does the interference noise continue with the antenna disconnected? If so then many in line filters would work. Google Walcott Radio Bandit CB filter. If the noise completely disappears with the antenna disconnected even though you get a bunch of static when your lights are on, the interference is probably a bad antenna connection. A poor antenna ground or your coaxial cable is routed too close to a source of electrical disturbance like an alternator or a heavy flow of electricity thru wiring like near an engine control module or battery cables. Sometimes a fuse box is an electronic magnetic storm of interference. Your coax should be 18 feet in length. If your splitting between two antennas you should have 9 feet of coax to each antenna. The connections must be clean of any grime, paint or corrosion. The extra length of coax needs to be coiled up so the two ends flow in one side and out the other side. A rats nest of wire will cause electromagnetic disturbances. Remember and electric motor or alternator is a coil of wire with an electromagnetic field flowing thru it. Your dealing with sensitive circuitry in your radio so these little details are very huge in making a clean signal. Good luck.

    Do you pick up a buzz off certain power lines? Not all but some power lines I drive along beside I have to turn the volume down until I get off that street in the big rig. Some buildings cause a lot of static like downtown where I'm close at a red light.
    The ham folks say that ground and power strait from the battery help reduce noise but I haven't tried it yet.
    My cellphone charger also does the same thing. I have to turn the RF gain way down to tolerate it.
    Stryker 955 here.

      I have the same thing going on but with my rear camera to the dash/mirror camera in my pickup. It's external and installed on the rollbar, right next to my CB antenna. I was "smart" and installed the lot together along with lights and other circuits in a single conduit running through the firewall grommet and down along the chassis to the back. When I key in the dash cam freaks out with static first, but then goes and switches modes and settings and eventually reboots. But that's not even the scary part. The scary part for me is the 20ish RPM drop in engine speed when I key in. And I don't have an amp. I'm only doing 4 watts!
      I have a lot of grounding work to do, it seems.

    Have you ever tried adding a capacitor on your power input? It should reduce your static massively. If you haven't try a combination of a high capacity slow response CBB capacitor in series with a low capacity fast response ceramic capacitor. Or just buy a good high cap ceramic capacitor with a low ESR

    • @Akisame-LuigI-O
      @Akisame-LuigI-O Рік тому

      @@jerbyr3085 yeah, there usually is a massive amount of noise on the power line. I add capacitors to most equipment that is very sensitive to interference from its power lines.
      If you ever have the option you should hook up an oscilloscope to your 12V car output (or look up a video on youtube). If you also use a power splitter the noise can get really bad.
      You can also use low capacity capacitors in between your signal in and ground to cut some extra noise. I've build a button on the side of my CB radio that does this with 2 different capacitors. So I can switch between no low pass filter, mild low pass filter and strong low pass filter.

    • @Akisame-LuigI-O
      @Akisame-LuigI-O Рік тому

      @@jerbyr3085 the signal line capacitor depends on the capacitance. You need to use a very low capacity on the signal side to make a low pass filter. All it does is filter out high frequency noise. Yes, there is some signal in there but it makes very weak signal more audible. Also, I don't actually put a capacitor on the input line. I put it between the volume control and ground so that high frequency sounds are filtered before amplification occurs. Less things that can go wrong. Also, I added the ability to turn off the filtering whenever I wish since this is only used for listening to weak signals or when I turned off the normal filtering system and I don't want to get disturbed too much by high frequency noise.
      As for the power line.... You want that input to be as smooth as possible as there isn't any real signal on there and you never want to hear that from your speaker.
      Your final goal is to keep your noise floor as low as possible and your signal as high as possible.

      Without knowing anymore about the system and what you're using and the condition of it or the vehicle. There's some static interfaces you can get rid of. If you're a trucker, the inverter is a big interface you can pick up other trucks inverters and LEDs. RF bonding will greatly help reduce these interfaces, I have 2 videos on it.

      Oh also I have an ANL and a NB/ANL. when I had my antenna laying across the dash I actually had clear reception and about a quarter mile range. With it on the mount it's pure static and like 100' range. Anyway what's better, ANL or NB/ANL
      Tomorrow I'll run with the charger unhooked. I noticed when my codriver uses the microwave in the sleeper I get a signal too l

    • @jrichtruckincbtips
      @jrichtruckincbtips  5 років тому

      NB/ANL is fine. Sounds like you are in a Freightliner, yes? Run the ground strap from the perch to the firewall. Check the resistance and ground of the coax with the meter. The 4' firestick will do, but the taller the better.
      Check out my video "best antennas for a Kenworth " there is a link in the description for Skip Shooter antennas. There you can buy a 6' or 7' Skip Shooter for the price of the 4' firestick. And, they are also more durable. Thanks for watching.

      @@jrichtruckincbtips yeah I know what you mean. About a week ago I figured out what was causing a lot of the static and it was a cheap phone plug like the one in your video. I unplugged that and it helped a lot but still have static. I’ve had my current truck for over 3 years and have tried about 5 different CBs, several different brands of coax and antennas and it still just doesn’t work like it should. Currently I’m running a Stryker 655 with a Wilson 2000 antenna. It doesn’t work near as good as it should. I had it wired straight to the battery and then someone told me to ground it straight to the frame so I did that and it made no difference. If my truck is rolling, my cb is always on and it just gets so aggravating sometimes. Every time I upgrade radios in my truck (2013 Peterbilt 389) I put the old radio in my pickup and they work great. I don’t know what else to do. Thanks for the response.

      Get a noise filter if your powering a 12 volt radio with a power supply. If it's an AC base with an internal transformer then the interference is being induced thru your antenna. Check that your coax is not in contact with other electronic devices or near electrical cords. Make sure your antenna isnt near power lines. If theres high voltage transmission lines within a couple hundred yards of your antenna you cant fix it.
