This lesson really demonstrates what a great way Bitesize is for foreigners to learn Irish. I am learning this by repetition. Once I can recite the song I will learn the music and I will be able to perform a truly great song in Irish. It’s a beautiful song and I could never do it without Siobhan and Bitesize Irish. I did hear this song first when Iarla sang it in the film Brooklyn! I’m so glad you mentioned that. It’s one of my favorite films, and when he sang this song, the tears couldn’t be stopped! Still gets me every time. Thank you Siobhan!

Thank you. This is one of my favourite songs, and there are so many versions as you say. And I've just learned today, that where I live, Newfoundland (also called Talamh an Éisc) that before Gaelic died out completely at the beginning of the 20th century, the Munster dialect was apparently the predominant dialect that subsequently became Newfoundland Gaelic. We still use a lot of forms of what were Gaelic words in everyday speech: 'scrob' meaning "scratch" (scríob), 'sleveen' meaning "rascal" (slíbhín), and 'streel' someone who's slovenly (sraoill). And we use the words "sure" and '"after' the same as you do in Ireland, e.g. "Sure, I'm already after telling herself a hundred times she looks a right streel."

This is such a lovely song, I like to play the rendition by Iarla Ó Lionáird in the car or travelling places as it is so soothing and peaceful. The only problem of course is the song is too short so I find myself having to play it multiple times.

"Casadh an tSúgáin" (the twisting of the rope) is a traditional Irish love song, sung in the sean-nós style and made popular by the 2015 film "Brooklyn" (starring Saoirse Ronan) under the name of "Frankie's song" (played by Iarla Ó Lionáird himself).
It is a traditional harp tune that was collected from Mayo harpist Rose Mooney in 1792 but the tune may be much older than that.
The story behind the song is of a man who is in love with a young woman who lives with her mother. He visits the girl but the mother wants to get rid of him so she makes him twist a straw rope. As he does this he has to walk backwards as the rope gets longer. Eventually he backs out of the house, at which point the mother cuts the rope and slams the door closed.
