    I could never play Strat guitars simply because the volume pot was always in my way and I ended up intermittently turning the volume down. Yngwie sort of arched his hand over the pot almost like cupping it which came in useful for doing his swelling sounds with a pingpong delay. He did this so beautifully on the Live In Japan 1985 as part of his guitar solo extravaganza. This was the time when Yngwie had refined his technique so exquisitely to the point unreal perfection.
    I was developing strict alt picking however I noticed Yngwie was not using strict alt but rather doing two downstrokes, pulloffs, two notes per string followed by 3, utilising hammers, more pulloffs or to say a mixture of many techniques all working together flawlessly. At the time i had never heard of Economy picking or understood its benefits ect. Yngwie had come across all of this as a solution to the limitations strict alt picking presents, seemingly all by himself which is remarkable. The other remarkable thing was all this worked so well with his violin like tone, which sounded so clear, not like a distortion but more like a sweet overdrive and very clean and low output. Low strings sounded fat and round and articulation was perfect.

      I play Strats. I have the same problem as you and all my strats have the same mod: get rid of Tone knob 2, move Tone knob 1 in its place, move Volume knob where Tone knob 1 was, then rewire middle pick up to be affected my Tone knob 1, and optionally also the bridge pick up (though usually I leave it so I can toggle between tone knob on/off when switching to bridge).
      My best guitar playing is still on Strats, anything else I've ever played has made it harder for me to play so... I keep playing Strats and always mod my Strats this way.

    • @ParanormalResponse
      @ParanormalResponse 8 місяців тому +2

      I had a Strat and encountered the same issue. I moved the vlume down and eliminated a tone. I dont use tone anyway. Then I switched to Charvels because the knob was placed better but their knobs were in the way of the 3 way selector, So I still ended up moving the volume to tone. lol I like the Charvels thoough, much better.

    • @BatiGokovali
      @BatiGokovali 8 місяців тому

      I totally agree with the volume pot situation. Once played a strat that had volume pot so close, and I was basically fading out every song. But that's not the case with my strat, I didn't have any problems with my own strat. I get so used to it, especially in live situations. I'll do my soundcheck with my pots at 7-7.5, so if I need a little boost then I just increase it.

    I saw him play back in the 90's when he was open for AC/DC . I had front row seats and could watch his hands up close .
    I couldn't believe how fast he was playing without ever really dropping his pinky .
    As I was taught scales , you used all four fingers for that . He would drop it occasionally but, not to the point you'd think it was effecting his speed .
    He seemed to do more with three fingers excluding the pinky .

    Yngwie has such a unique and hodge podge picking technique, its nice to see people preserve the tradition and shed light on it in the post Troy Grady era.
    I think the biggest takeway from the pickslanting seminar for most people was that many different approaches can be utilized to play fast and we have so many options to pursue what feels natural to us. Its a great time to be guitar players!

    If you are a strict alternate picker,there are always other pick approaches to sort out things.for example inside,outside picking.

    • @dutchdykefinger
      @dutchdykefinger 8 місяців тому +1

      this is exactly what paul gilbert did
      his strict alt picking regime worked for him
      and yes on odd numbers you'll have to switch around every 2nd time from inside and outside depending on the amount of stirngs used
      if you play 3 notes around over 2 stringsd, and go from the E upstroke to A downstroke, then A upstroke, the next E in laternate picking will then be everything inversed everytime around too
      ofcourse not always needed when you can hammer those extra notes but with strict picking everything on alt, you're going to have to invert your movements every alternation on odd number sequences.
      but PG was very good at string skipping too, cant really sweep your way out of string skips and make them even remotely sound as crisp, when you have serious string skipping game, then milk that 3 note per string shit where only 1 is picked the rest hammered or pulled, it opens up a lot of extra capability in alternate picking in terms of sounding both fast and strongly accentuated
      but yeah, having those big old hands does help for the 3 note per string thing on the lower registers, my hands have a hard time doing a fret 3-5-7 quickly because eitehr my pinky is too close to my ring finger if i do the 5 with my ring, or my pinky is too far away when i use my middle finger for 5 stretch
      so i just semi-slide the 3 to the 5 so i can make that 7 easy, kind of smiuggling the one in between that's least accentuated :')
      at least, on a stratocaster, which is a bit bigger scale length than a les paul, which does matter ( i can't bar a Emaj from fret 12 on a LP, can barely still on a strat) but i think most metal guitars do use the jumo frets like strats too unless specified otherwise

    This was excellent, Tom - thanks for such a well illustrated vid.
    Of note - Yngwie was on Rick Beato recently (I'm sure you saw) and he was pretty critical of sweep picking, claiming he never does so. I took that to mean the full double octave sweeps we've all practiced, and not this very economical technique you're demonstrating. I remember stumbling upon it decades ago (well before the internet and even instructional videos on VHS!) and being completely surprised and a bit weirded out, actually... after all, everyone was going on about 'sweeping', and that was most certainly not.
    I wish I'd said 'to hell with it' and kept working on it now.
    Watching Yngwie's hands carefully it's clear that he's doing precisely what your showing here and not much else!
    Cheers from Toronto!

      I saw that too and the impression I get is that Yngwie one day went to see what the sweep picking technique everyone talked about was and saw the traditional 5-6 strings sweeps where the pick only hits one note per string and goes up and down in a single motion. He rarely does that king of thing, and that's why he's so defensive about not doing sweep picking.
      What he failed to realise, probably due to not researching enough, is that sweep picking as a term is broadly used to refer to economy picking as well, as it is an integral part of it, which he does all the time.
      So he does sweep, and it's a master at it. He simply doesn't understand the terminology and has a limited understanding of the term itself, even though he's a master at it. The reason why is probably because he learned a lot of these things by himself, intuitively and never gave them names, and back then, a lot of these techniques didn't have names. It's a simple misunderstanding of words and its meanings

    I've been trying to alternate-pick-all-notes up and down, very2 hard. Still can't get used to it..

    Great stuff, thanks a lot!! I'll definitely train on this one! One thing I can't figure out is how tight to hold the pick. I also have the Dunlop JYM 1.5 but I'm not comfortable with it, the tip is not pointy enough and it's a mistery how you can go light-speed fast with that one. I'm using the Dunlop Tortex Flow 1.5 with more pointy tip, which seems better for me, but still I can't clear out how tight I should hold the pick. How tight are you holding the pick?

    I remember a guitar magazine interview where he got pissed when they said he used sweep picking.Yngwie said he alternated every note even arpeggios .

    • @TomShreds
      @TomShreds  8 місяців тому +1

      Yep! I have heard him repeatedly state that he doesn’t sweep. I suspect the issue is that his definition of sweep picking is different to the rest of us! He’s indicated that sweeping is when you go across all 6 strings in one stroke.

      I suspect Yngwie does too, I believe he avoids it entirely these days, but pre accident he did. Recommend upward slanting the pick for the “spreading butter” technique, and being super light 😎🎸

    • @piedpeter1
      @piedpeter1 8 місяців тому +1

      That's funny (I hope), I tried to price out all the pieces and I just got a mint condition used yjm strat, ended up about $3-400 more than parts guitar but no hassle with building. This and my epi Slash LP with the thick baseball bat neck are my favorite guitars. But, once you go scalloped its the way to go imo. I just bought/got the last cheap Fender red yngwie pedal from a guy in Ukraine, all legit, plus I scored years ago a modded to dod gray specs yjm308 pedal for cheap and I just ordered a dover tone pedal to add even more violinesqe tone to yngwies tone. Also yngwie guitar sounds really good with Lovepedal Eternity pedal, anyways, thanks for the videos and yes, you do totally shred, but I'm close behind, just need to quit my job! lol.

    nice video... what is the strings gauge youre using?

  • @forelectricstring8833
    @forelectricstring8833 9 місяців тому +4

    Nice lesson. Not my philosophy though. Mine is "always pick in the direction from current pick position to the string". So the 6th note in that lick (13th fret on 2nd string) would be up. And no need to do a pull up to arrange for some pick pattern. You can legato at any point and return to pick: the rule "always pick in the direction from current pick position to the string" will setup things by itself.

    • @TomShreds
      @TomShreds  7 місяців тому

      Great question. If I understand correctly, if I’m using this style of playing (which I don’t always), then I’d pick down up hammer on, then start the g string with a down. Very much depends on what’s before or after though.
