- cbradiomagazine.com/ - A classic Cobra CB (Uniden made) that came across my desk. An excellent performer even at 40 years old.
**Correction: MSRP in 1977 was $349.95 according to the 1977 S9 Magazine buyers guide!
A video I recommend on this model from Mike's Radio Repair.

88 dislikes on this video? Wow - what the heck did people not like?
I have no idea. I think some are just asses that down vote everything.
No kidding, its a friggen video, its not like you made them eat all their brockly!🤣👍
I bought one of these rigs when they came out. First SSB radios I owned, ran a Turner jm+2 on it.
Blast from the past. THANKS.
The ol Turner Jm,,, I was a plus 3b mobile user and Supersidekick on my 148 GTL DX
Wow l heave never seen that before !! I had a Cobra 148 GTL but this l never seen it before !!!🏍️ Nice 👍 video 📸!
Great to See a Video from you again !!!!
I had one in the early 90's that talked louder than any other radio I had before, during, or after... I regretted letting it go and I finally found a good example to clean up and restore to glory. I just received it yesterday and I'm stoked! These things have become unicorns for us. Finding a really clean one is nearly impossible!
I will sell you mine. A clean virgin .
I purchased the 138 xlr in 1977
@@lesjones7019 I have one now, but thank you!
I have a Robyn 520d that is the same thing and it's LOUD. I just recapped it too.
Awesome old school rig.. I have a a 1980"s Teaberry Stalker 9 in pristine condition. The RX on that rig is exquisite .. I hear what your are saying about old rigs sounding better.. However now SDR Transceiver have taken it to a different level..Nice upload thanks for sharing 73's
The Holy Grail of the 70s
Awesome radio. Still trying to find one thats not all hacked up. Tons of service bulletins on it too, unfortunately. Those radios are suuuper heavy, no hanging that one from your plastic dash
Mine new in 1977 for sale.
100 dollars used in the house.
Please post more videos
Amazing radio, as you said very heavy, got 2 one I got from eBay the other at a Hamfest for parts $25, took me a few days to get it going
Back in the good old days, Uniden made their own crystal filters for SSB, they reckoned it was cheaper and better quality.
memories, most CBs had the uniden boards/parts. the 858, 8719, 02a. wow bring me way back to the 3 channel xcel Globe tube. plug / change xcels to change channels.
Very nice rig good to see your videos again
Just pick one up yesterday in great condition from Fred in NY.. someone added echo using RF gain knob..not a fan of echo, oh well !!.. glad to see you back reviewing radios again.. I enjoyed the one review on the yeti optima MKIII very helpful.. 73 Rick
Welcome back!
Welcome back!!!
Excellent video and old Cobra radio don't see much of anymore !
Good old radio
Those were very expensive in the 70s. All CB were costly back then now they're affordable.
nice video!
nice rig!!
I just got on from Phoenix AZ. I'm a truck driver and took it home. Looking forward to playing with it
I have this same radio and the screw pattern on the side of radio for the mounting bracket is a wider pattern than the new radios, do you know where I can find the the correct mounting bracket for this radio?
Very well made sturdy radios,
Hello,my name is Montgomery and I saw your comment on Waimea Bay chat and I can answer your question: I had to ask the main one that owns the organization
"Ah yes, so we don't offer extensive information about our live cam setups, but you can let them know that we use Sony and AXIS cameras." That is all that she told me. Hopefully that answers your question.
Back in the 90s i have one that has a digit scan that covers 26.000 to 28.000 megahertz in perfect working shape good memories.....
just picked one of these yesterday on e bay NOS 200.00 well worth the money!!!
Well now everyone is off to eBay to find this radio.
Maybe, but it will cast them over the odds at the moment, prices are through the roof! Wait or after Covid when everyone is back at work and lost interest.
Buy mine for 100 dollars
An excellent radio.
I had a Cobra 138 that was just a 23 channel, infact just sold it last weekend
I have one that has 36 to 40 added
Rare as Rockin horse Sxxxx, TOP RADIOS
138 xlr how many amps do I need 30 it's clipped and peaked
Need a power supply
Please fix. My 138 xlr.no transmit.
I miss the (old) natural sounding tube radios. Even better than the early transistor CBS. Don't think any were made in 40 channel though.
Is it available for sale?
You don't see much of them as everyone that had one is keeping hold of them. The other set that was good was the Stalker that had 80 European/American and 40 UK FM I love those sets, even if it is a Uniden board inside. That is a later model, it has the DIM on it. The early and later one had a few mods done to them and a lot swear by the earlier model. I don't care, just give me one!
I would love a SSB set, it would make my day being disabled to listen to SSB all day. I had the loan of a set and I heard Brazil on SSb and I heard Japan. I thought japan was on another frequency? Maybe I am wrong on that one. Shame the set had to go back to its owner :-((
You can have mine 😅
If it makes you happy ❤❤❤
I got it new in 1977 ❤❤
Bob 😅😅
@@lesjones5684 I just saw your post, but you can't be serious?
Looks like the 148's older brother.
Buy mine it's very clean
Still got it ?
its clockwise to add power and modulation
i bought 1` in auction ` 18 chanel in australia as new never used no scratches and bought a DigiMax Lite CB channel expansion KIT for CB radio now with roger beep auto scan 300 chanels blue display push in electronic tuner knob to change functions scans 4 chanels in 1 second
The older radios do sound better than surface mount technology.
For Sale?
I have one also with manual
i got one of that radio
Good radios, now they dont deserve cap job
I use a mint mk1 cobra 148GTL DX. with a teardrop 575 m6 mic. NEVER FOR SALE🌚
Got it for 1006
Wait I just have one of these haha
i just found one in pristine condition made in japan is this rare to not be made in taiwan?
Uniden made radios in Japan prior to them being manufactured elsewhere. Not sure how many 138’s were made in Japan.
12 watts? Um they do more than thst when tuned up. The last one i had did 28.
Looks like a TRC-449. Bet they use the same chassis......
Im 99 percent sure your correct. I will go see.
Ron Wild you are right it is the same chassis. I have a TRC-449 very nice loud cb radio 10-4.
I will never sell my 138 xlr 😅😅😅
If cobra made radios like this now and same quality they would sell here in England now we have ssb/am.
The same boards were till 94/95 in the REAL superstar 3900s
Sadly CBs are not the quality they used to be. Not a true CB anyway.
The radio was excellent but the meter was cheap and nasty nearly all of them fail. The realistic 449 meter or cobra 138/midland13-893 meter would of been a better choice.
I don't want mine.
