  • The DDS VFO designed by PU4 WLG. troyradio.net/ddsvfo - Troy's Radio Service (TX) is the USA distributor for the DDS VFO. For outisde the USA contact PU4 WLG kitdds.blogspot.com/ This amazing device gives any CB radio extra frequencies, tuning adjustments, roger beeps, scanning, and more. (NOTE) Troy's Radio Service is extremely busy doing these modifications for customers so you likely will have to wait a bit but the wait is worth it! Works on all types of radios, turns 23 channel radios into 40+ export radios, gives SSB stability to radios with drift issues (Galaxy 959), and can fix radios with bad PLL sections that no longer have replacements available. Cost is currently $75 for the kit and $150 if you have Troy's install it.

This is definitely a game changer. Within the RF limits of the radio, this adds some interesting capabilities. Back in the day, I spent so much time (& money) adding crystal banks with variable capacitors, so I could 'rubber' the crystals, and get them on frequency. The frequency counter cost me more than my radio! Technology has come a very long way.

Believe it or not, I'm sure he is the same guy who regularly blasted right over the top of one of my neighbours who used a 3 element beam and lived about 200 yards away back around the same time. The rig I had then, a Robyn TR-123D, picked up signals from the USA when the skip was up better than local signals. I'm in Scotland!
I might even be able to verify that. I made a few cassette recordings of CB back in the day. Don't know what state they're in now, though.

This is far and above what I was making and installing back in the 80's. I had a board that I built that would go from -79 up to 108, including the A channels. I was able to use the original readout and had it set up as 5, 40 channel bands. It used 3, E-prom chips. One ran the PLL, the other two ran the readout. At that time it was a pretty good modification, but it took up about a third of the room that the main PC board took up and was a bear to fit in, except if you were putting it in a Cobra 2000. This new mod looks like the cats meow. With modern microchips it'll be much smaller. I also installed FM kits. Not my own design, but pretty cool to have that mode.

  • @w.rustylane5650

Now that's a super nifty mod. Wish they would have had that back in the mid 70's when I was modifying PLL circuits on CB radios for folks. I would modify radios to go above channel 40 since back then 1 through 40 were so busy. I would modify a radio for $20.00 per radio. That included a couple of switches to switch to the upper channels. Things sure have changed since the 70's. W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee.

I bought a Grant from them with this mod done to it. Along with the digital RX mater and I also got the HF RX mod. So I can listen on 80 meters! Plus all kinds of features. It took 3 months to get it from Troy Radio, And the radio plus the mods was 300 bucks delivered. Hands down much better then anything new. That classic radio now out runs anything they make today. I have owned just about everything radio wise, but this is by far the best. The classic look, but all the feathers you could ever want. Plus having TX on all of 10 meters is great! This project was developed in Brazil. It is very interesting in cases of burnt PLLs that no longer have replacements. Yes, there are other advantages but not everything is perfect. There is a problem of generating noise that is generated by the I2C communication of the display data bus that can generate ghost signals on some channels. Even so, it is a very valid option for retired equipment, either due to lack of PLL replacement or even in equipment limited by being crystal oscillators. Congratulations to the Brazilians who perfected this project. Yes, I was one of the pioneers to spread the DDS concept in my country. Wander Lúcio and André Tauros were responsible for translating a concept into a usable project. 73 to all friends.

Good morning Paul. Good to see a Brazilian comment here. you know Paulo, this problem caused by i2c communication, doesn't exist in this version, because I don't have a constant update of the display. (Except for the Spectrum scan, in which case we'll be running the spectrum where it's pure noise.) But this current version is actually free of noise caused by i2c. Abraço e muita paz. Obrigado por ser um dos primeiros a experimentar esse sistema. 👍

I once was trying the same replacing the PLL of a FM only radio by a FPGA full of home made software.
The idea was NOT to change the PCB of the radio but still being able to transmit PhaseLoopSSB signals and pickup the IF of the radio to form a SDR receivcer enabling to establihe Side band communication using a FM radio without modifieing the PCB.
I actualy got quiet far but al the experiments resulted in decay of the radio and my interest got over to another (probarly even more absurd) project.

Very nice, I will show this to mates who I am still in touch with here in Australia, we were putting scanners into the old cobra 138's years ago in the 80s' bu they weren't as good as this. Many mates, and I are still into HF CB and are also amateurs. I will pass this around.

This is a very cool mod for older radios. However depending on the price, a lot of modern radios can do all of this and then some for under $300. The President Lincoln 2+ is one of them. Thanks for sharing!

It’s not trying to compete with new radios or ham radios. It’s about taking your favorite older radio snd making it even better. .

They sell new radios that do all the features of this mod? I was looking for one a few months back because I have friends who have ham radios but I need a standard 40 channel for when I go wheeling with my club. So I was looking for a radio that does both and couldn’t find one. I needed up fixing my old CB radio to get it working. I would love to be able to do both in one unit.

I did not know that triple nickel was the international calling frequency. Good information. I'm guessing that you might still have to tune your antenna for the favorite center frequency area you want to transmit around. I have a VHF radio that kind of tunes itself now (so I don't blow anything up) which is kind of handy.

I have been out of the CB Radio stuff for a good decade. When I did, it was in my Camaro, Protoge, and Sunbird when gas was cheap, before a family, and usually road trips. I still have the radio and antenna but just haven't had it up and running in the car. Seeing this, man, sweet. ALMOST makes me want to break out the radio and set things up again, but, I don't go far anymore, I don't want anyone to see the radio, and I've been told it's pretty "quiet" anymore on CB. But still, frig'n sweet to see even THIS old tech get updates. (I'm a retro enthusiast)

omg, they are adding a SDR to CB's now.. how cool is that.. software definded radio's are amazing in thier abilities along compared to normal radio's they dont actually TUNE to any channel, they sample every channel at the same time, and store the reception data into a block of data that can be accessed directly on the chip. really neat stuff . would love to add this to an old 128gtl with funny freq's. likely will have to remove the funny freq mod's from it.

i've never had a licence, nor any trouble! I don't think anyone cares. Back in the day I would annoy the hell out of the post office by operating AM and FM with burners, i noticed the telephone exchange had a cb aerial on the roof, my theory is they were trying to find out who it was. I only lived around the corner and was probably wrecking their communications for the whole town. I also used to wipe out people's TV sets and commercial radio broadcast channels. Not purposely, it just happened haha.
