Delta Tune is only for the pros. What you do, is key your mic, and start turning tgat knob. Doing this, you begin saying the magic words, "Audie-audie-audio," ask for a radio check-- five times-- whistle a single note for a few seconds, and then (still holding the mic key, throughout) repeat the magical incantation. Finally, after at least forty-five seconds of constant transmission (repeating all the previous steps if necessary), you announce your handle, and say "How about that [insert other obnoxious guy's handle], you out there?" Only at this point can you release the mic-key, ignore any radio check you previously requested, and repeat your own handle and the station you are calling. No matter if anything is heard, you key up again, laugh uproariously, and say something like, "Roger, I'm going back quiet." Yes, I'm talking about you, "Old Man in the Garage." All this teasing to beg you: Stay off of channel 19, and better yet, stay off of AM. DX-ing is okay at the top and bottom of the band, but best if using SSB. 19 is truckers speaking locally, and dealing with sever weather, accidents, or just chatting. Just because you don't hear us, does not mean we are happy about you ignoring what we do with radios.
I'm eyeballing that galaxy now! Not new to CB but I've been running off a cobra 32XLR for years and think it's time for an upgrade! Thank you for taking your time in this video had a good idea on what things where but never really took the time to learn so thank you and stay safe out there!
Your Citizens Band radio includes an array of controls for receiving, adjusting and listening to audio from other CB radio users. The radio's delta tune knob, also known as the clarifier control, reduces the amount of static present on the radio when communicating with another person. When turned one way or another, the knob reduces the pitch of the person's voice and makes the voice clearer and less squeaky.
It was used back in the day to tune into slightly off-frequency signals. Today's radios don't really need it. That pot usually gets used for customizing radios now.
Thank you for your video and explaining how the radio works I've been out of a CB business for about three decades. I'm just now getting back into it and trying to figure out what radio is best for me. I thought the 10-meter radio was a ham operated radio. You just educated me on the 10K. Stay safe on the highway and have a great evening.
Hi J, back in the day (here in New Zealand) when these Cobras came out they were top of the line and were really expensive if you could find one & were illegal as we were only allowed things like Tait CB4's using 2 watts AM with 9 channels, so I bought a highly modified Johnson Viking 4740 which had 80 watts using 26 and 27 mhz ssb that could 'slide' between channels going through a 3 element yargi.
As a commercial driver of F350 with car carrier I want to get a CB radio. Pickup trucks lack designated space for CBs but I think that having one helps a lot on king drives.
I installed a variable power kit on one of my 29s. I used the SWR knob for the adjustable power potentiometer. 1w dk, 4w full tilt. Running it with a 2pill when I want more fire in the wire.
here to go in depth with the pa function! i run a system twice as loud as a typical police unit! it all starts with an TS mono plug adapter to rca female ports. from here i ran an rca cord to a 200 watt rms amplifier and the wired it to a high compression driver and a huge 18 inch bull horn on the top of my van. you will need an amp because the cb its self does not produce many watts. its quite hilarious the reactions i get when i roll through town on my pa making heads turn from 5 blocks down. the simply will not happen with out the amp! i have also decibel tested my pa and it peaked at 142 db max! over 40 db over your typical car horn! also dont forget to run a delta ec1 echo chamber with a really good power mic.
Been out of "CBing" for 39 years, and still out of " CBing" and still out of "CBing". So ,no offense, I really don't care, but I do remember how to use the settings. Thank you sir, J Rich for this video. Have a safe winter.

I had a Radio Shack TRC-424 in 1980. I attached the PA output to an an external horn speaker under the hood. If I switched the radio from CB to PA then I could be outside the car and hear what others were saying on the channel if I was out of the car. I would turn up the squelch so I would only hear people close by me and not hear static. I could also talk into the mike when on the road to say something to the car in front of me.
Definitely appreciated. U ask for help, nobody takes the tym to explain, they just start turning knobs. "Radio check, radio check". -Come back- . Ur good to go. Wtf??? Ur r very informative, thanx!!!
Just an important correction at 10:25 - the Galaxy DX47HP is AM & FM only - it does NOT have Single Side Band (SSB) capability. The six-way A to F selector merely selects 6 different band segments.
Delta tune....it’s like this. If the radio your listening to is transmitting at 27.3848 (.2 KHz off frequency), the delta tune can make up for that. In the Amateur radio world, it’s called “Receive Incremental Tuning” or RIT. The two are the same. It’s simply used to make up for the fact that not all radios are tuned perfectly, kinda like an idler wheel on an engine...it makes up for slack in the belt. Now when you transmit on your CB it might be off a bit as well..say 27.3852 (also .2 kHz off frequency) the other cb operator would turn their delta tune the other direction that what I mentioned above...but, when both use it properly....you sound like your on frequency. In short, if CB radios were better tuned, one might not need to even use the delta tune feature. Unlike amateur radio, CB is a channelized service and “should” be on frequency. But....each manufacturer of these radios does it different and to make up for it...you have delta tune.
Hey Guys - The Cobra 29 LTD is an AM-only rig, and as such the DELTA TUNE is pretty well useless, since an AM signal is wide band and most users would never notice any difference whatsoever by using it. In a similar vein, the RF GAIN control should actually be labelled “RF ATTENUATOR”, because that is what it does when it is turned anti-clockwise - that’s why most users use the RF Gain on maximum! It’s there to fool users into thinking they are adding RF gain to their incoming signal! The same can be pretty well said for the DYNAMIKE control - it’s an attenuation control to reduce mike gain NOT increase mike gain - again, that’s why most users use the DYNAMIKE control on or near its maximum setting! Such controls are known in the trade as “bells & whistles” - the more “bells and whistles” controls there are to fool the purchasers, the more dollars can be charged for the radio! Having said all that, the Cobra series of radios are reliable and give superb performance. I run its big brother - the Cobra 148 GTLDX FM, the all-singing and dancing AM/FM/SSB/CW version, on both CB and Ham 28/29MHz Bands, and it holds its own against far more expensive Ham Radio proprietary brands. Long live Cobra!
I love my galaxy dx86v because it has a freq counter and usb/lsb plus a corse and fine tuner, sometimes you need to slide to make contact. Of course i tend to tinker while stopped for my 10.
Single side band (SSB) is not a different frequincy, It is a different portion of an existing freq. You cam transmit and receive on the upper and/or lower side of ch. 19 if you want. You can't talk to a person on the AM portion of 19 when in SSB mode, but if someone else has SSB they can understand and talk with you. Using the upper or lower side of a channel triples the power output.

And is there a portable powerful handheld walkie-talkie type for my car? I live in Manhattan New York if I install the radio I wouldn’t expect it to be there for long lol
Just subbed. Have a new 10 m radio. I live in s Florida and not much "action" for my 11m. So I know I can't talk on the 10 without license. But more channels to hear besides the Super Bowls... swr is tricky with not a lot of wide open areas to calibrate. I got a ranger n99-2. Want to calibrate for shtf days. Any vids on 10m? Thanks
I really don't do anything on 10 meter although I have 10 meter radios they are all on 11 meter. There's some action on LSB 38 and a few others you just have to find them.
Thank you. I want to know how to use one in case of an emergency. Are there specific channels? If I want to hear information, what do I do? I live remote and want an alternate source for communicating if cell phones aren’t available.
Hey bud Have problem with my radio, when I key up needle goes left instead of going right, I’ve changed antennas and tried set SWR but can’t get to calibrate correctly. Any thoughts?
When on the interstate truckers use 19. In different areas you may find locals on other channels that are on base stations, then there is the party channels like 11, 6 LSB 38.
Ok question I have cobra 29 Ltd chrome. All works great moved to different truck. Cb worked last week got in to truck this week and antenna light comes on when try to talk
Thank you so much, I am looking to buy a CB, wasn't sure after so many decades since using one , what would now be the best one to get for 1) home use & 2) for my vehicle. Which has the broader reach, the Cobra or the Galaxy? Thank you again.
I’m trying to decide whether or not to add a cb to my GMRS radio in my car, or just have the GMRS. Have you noticed a reduction in CB traffic over the years? I head some truckers are switching to GMRS or even digital radio systems and that a lot of people don’t use CB much anymore. But I would like to have a form of communication where I can call for help to near by trucks if there’s an emergency
A lot of new drivers don't see the value of CB. Some drivers possibly use GMRS because they haul agricultural and use it to communicate with the farmers.
GMRS would be good if you talking to very specific people on very specific channels. CB is effective because everyone has one everything important on the open road is gonna be on channel 19. Your gonna get traffic, speed traps, and people acting like jack holes.
Hey j Rich this is Vinny from Tennessee I have a Winnebago motorhome class a the coax cable in the antenna look like crap what is a good antenna to put on top of the motorhome that won't be too high
I have a cobra 29LTD chrome and when the mic isnt keyed my rx and tx is green then when its keyed its red and while im talking my ANT turns red what could be the problem?
Okay so I got the ranger mic the cobra lx without Bluetooth. Also a Palomar amp been setup together running a stock magnet mount whip bottom biggest. Problem is what antenna should be on dodge Dakota 98 roof mount.
I thought I heard you say 85w deadkey?? It's about 120-130w radio depending on who tunes it Just wondering if 85w is a bit high Mine is set at 30..swinging 125
Don't have that radio anymore, I think stock was 35watt dead key and 125watt peak. Add a swing kit and would dead key 10-40 watts to 125 watts on my meter. A CB shop in Texas claims with the swing kit that radio would peak at 300 watts and average at 125watts, but those numbers just don't add up.

I really don't think the fcc is going to bother you about a license.
How do I calibrate a Midland 77-888?
I can't find any videos about calibrating that model.
Thank you. I want to know how to use one in case of an emergency. Are there specific channels? If I want to hear information, what do I do? I live remote and want an alternate source for communicating if cell phones aren’t available.
Channel 19, assuming you have an antenna and your CB set up properly. However, depending on where you are you may have a local channel.
Thanks! Much appreciated!
thanks 🙏🏼 excellent video
Thanks for watching
"Delta" or "difference" is probably there to fine tune whatever frequency you're on to a decimal slightly higher or lower.
Don't be frustrated. Because it is who we are today.
Great video thank you so much
Great video.
I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, I get static out here on my CB, and I get static from the wife when I get home! 🤣🤣
Can't help with the wife, but with the cb, check out this video. It's a lot of work but we'll worth it. ua-cam.com/video/ohkOX45dJn0/v-deo.html
Hey bud
Have problem with my radio, when I key up needle goes left instead of going right, I’ve changed antennas and tried set SWR but can’t get to calibrate correctly. Any thoughts?
As far as channels go, what's the basic channel that most people use? Or do you just change channels until you hear someone?
When on the interstate truckers use 19. In different areas you may find locals on other channels that are on base stations, then there is the party channels like 11, 6 LSB 38.
Ok question I have cobra 29 Ltd chrome. All works great moved to different truck. Cb worked last week got in to truck this week and antenna light comes on when try to talk
Most likely coax, antenna(s), or ground problem. Best to take it to a cb shop have them check out the coax and antenna most do it for free or $10
@@jrichtruckincbtips thanks
the galaxy you displayed is NOT a sideband radio. It does have different bands above and below cb band
Thank you so much, I am looking to buy a CB, wasn't sure after so many decades since using one , what would now be the best one to get for 1) home use & 2) for my vehicle. Which has the broader reach, the Cobra or the Galaxy? Thank you again.
Cobra with an amp or big Galaxy.
I tell that to newby singers all the time. ..eat that mike!
Thanks for the info. On the back of a 2016 grand cherokee where can I mount a firesyyk 4' antenna? Thanks 1:47
CB isn't used as much in my area. Probably because of cell phones. Sideband is pretty active.
Hey j Rich this is Vinny from Tennessee I have a Winnebago motorhome class a the coax cable in the antenna look like crap what is a good antenna to put on top of the motorhome that won't be too high
Much obliged brother
Great video by the way 🍻
I have a cobra 29LTD chrome and when the mic isnt keyed my rx and tx is green then when its keyed its red and while im talking my ANT turns red what could be the problem?
High swr, bad coax, bad antenna
I thought 4 watts was max legal power out..what is the power knob for?
Hi from south Africa
The one who like my comment do u have whatsapp
I have an old Midland Alan87....i need help setting it up...any help would be great thanks.
Okay so I got the ranger mic the cobra lx without Bluetooth. Also a Palomar amp been setup together running a stock magnet mount whip bottom biggest. Problem is what antenna should be on dodge Dakota 98 roof mount.
If you're going to stay with a mag mount. I like the Stryker and Sirio antennas. Have you done any RF bonding to the truck?
@@jrichtruckincbtips it was taken to a truck cb radio shop they bonded the radio and amp with new mic. Antenna is my next big buy something mid power
I would like a galaxy just like that. Did it come with all the lights already? Where did you get it?
It comes like you see it, except the Ranger mic is extra. Got mine at the CB shop inside the T/A exit 296 I75 Ga.
This helped! Thanks
I have a cobra 29 classic ltd, I can send but don’t receive. When I try to calibrate it the needle doesn’t move. Any idea what’s causing that?
What is the ANT light and how do you keep it from. Coming on?
It means you have a problem with the coax, antenna, or high swr. Start off checking the swr with an external meter get that as low as possible.
How did u get 85w dead key, I just got a dx47hp and its supposed to be really powerful according to the cb shop but it only does 20w dead key
I thought I heard you say 85w deadkey??
It's about 120-130w radio depending on who tunes it
Just wondering if 85w is a bit high
Mine is set at 30..swinging 125
Don't have that radio anymore, I think stock was 35watt dead key and 125watt peak. Add a swing kit and would dead key 10-40 watts to 125 watts on my meter.
A CB shop in Texas claims with the swing kit that radio would peak at 300 watts and average at 125watts, but those numbers just don't add up.
My dad left me a powered up CB and iam putting In my truck. It's been long time iam needing to get swr set
Awesome
@@jrichtruckincbtips I got it set up. Got in between channels. Maxed out power and I got little extra power box for it to if need be. Talk back. Weather band. When I key up I drown out others. It was built in Colorado back in 95 and God took dad home in 97. To all truckers God be with you and have safe travels. Thanks Drivers.
Thank you so much! I’m trying to get into CB and HAM as a hobby and this was the only video I found that was dumbed down enough for me to understand🫡
Hi from Garth Close from South Africa cool
Thanks helped alot
