Neil wrote this song to suggest that while he is certainly looking for a companion, he is looking to turn himself into a good person so he can properly love this other person.Hpaving a “Heart of Gold” would mean that you possess qualities such as caring, loving, openness, and acceptance towards others.

A living legend. This song, along with others such as “Old Man” and “The Needle And The Damage Done,” came to be classic staples in folk-rock-country music circles and

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\yes I was a big fan of his early material both solo and with CSN which was ground breaking along with Stephen in Buffalo Springfield but now I wont listen to him since he did the dirty on Pegi by walking away from the marriage
David Crosby called him out on this' mind you David Crosby calls everyone out
yes he is a supreme talent but a selfish man as well but I thought he petered out in the later years and the music was not so good, only my opinion!

Brad needs to realize that with few exceptions there aren’t hard and fast messages to rock music. The “meaning” is how the music makes you feel and the personal experiences or memories that you attach to it. Lex gets that intuitively. I’d like to know how Heart of Gold made Brad feel.

I agree. this song seems obvious to me, but when I try to explain it logically it becomes hard. It would take multiple paragraphs to break it all down and try and explain it's meaning...but why bother, because in the end the meaning is an abstract one anyway.
Unless the song is something like "Hurricane" by Bob Dylan, which is a literal story, songs are emotional as much as anything else and emotion has very little to do with logic.

This recording was, if I recall, made just before he released Harvest (one of his best albums and indeed one of the great rock albums). So the audience had never heard this song and I hope they were thinking "Wow, this is fantastic". In any event I've seen Neil play an acoustic set and I've never seen anything better. Not only is he a great acoustic guitarist (and he also played piano on some tracks eg After The Goldrush) but his performance was absolutely outstanding. Almost hypnotic. You should listen to the opening few tracks on the Rust Never Sleeps concert footage if you want to see how good he was then (and he's still pretty good BTW!).

I have about 10 Neil Young albums and I can't remember him ever singing in falsetto. Although I admit I haven't heard anything from him after Harvest Moon in the early 90's. He had a very high tenor voice, but that's not the same thing as falsetto. You could say he has a unique high pitched voice and you'd be alright. Like Peter Cetera of Chicago or Steve Walsh of Kansas. They've got really high pitched voices, but they're not known for singing in falsetto. The Bee Gees! Particularly disco-era Bee Gees. That's probably the most famous falsetto in Rock.

I think the two of you are experiencing the introspection that comes with well-written lyrics/poetry. When Brad asks "what are you feeling?", he knows that he's feeling something deep, but just can't figure out what it is. How Neil Young brings out those emotions is the beauty of his music. His music resonates with listeners because I think they 'feel' his writing. His songs are his feelings, which he writes down as they come to him and then rigorously avoids editing the raw emotion he experienced when first writing the song. He sometimes changes the music arrangements and may change the mood (example, bounces a song between introspective acoustic or angrier electric versions), but always keeps that sense of connection to his deepest inner thoughts. He's connected to something deep and channels that to his audience.

One night one of my regulars came in, Mackey Feary, with his entire band, Kalapana. Everyone's cheering for Mackey and the rest of the band is shaking their heads, NO! Well, it was too late and as he was getting on stage I could see he was wasted. He started playing a jazzy chord progression of the Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere" but he started singing the wrong song, "Yesterday" in a different key!!!! And he was playing both parts perfectly and didn't even know what he was doing!!!! I think he had more than 2 parts of his brain to work with. He was outstanding and loved by everyone in Hawaii. RIP

Neil is a broad spectrum artist. This is a mellow folk song, and a damn good one. He also rocks his grungy ass off. Him and his band Crazy Horse had the loudest rock concert on tour at one time.

I still can't fathom how someone can play 2 instruments at the same time. That's different notes on each instrument in harmony with each other it boggles the mind.

Oh, it’s even stronger than that.. He’s keeping the beat and playing the melody on the same guitar, while singing… And playing harmonica..
I once heard David Crosby speak about the musical talent of Neil Young.. He said, go list to Crosby, Stills, and Nash, then go listen to Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young!..
I thought that was a telling comment..

You guys!!! It’s about his personal journey to understand and aspire to God! Most of 70’s lyrics are about the spiritual connection. It’s not about looking for another person. An internal struggle!

Linda Ronstadt sings the backing vocals on the studio recording of "Heart of Gold". Her vocals add touch of spectacular to the plaintive sense of the last verses before the fade out. Definitely give that version of the song a listen too.

The "Heart of Gold" is an ancient concept - a vessel to carry you to heaven, Val Halla, or just to any sort of better space - he says he is "a miner for a heart of gold" - which is counter intuitive for most western cultures, that would have it that everythnig good is up there, rather than down there.
Deep song, deceptively so - and really haunting - beautifully played and sung - so its alright and most people don't think twice...

On a personal note, Neil Young & Crazy Horse is the best concert I've ever seen.
BTW, he is the son of Scott Young who wrote a few novels but is best known for being a world-class hockey journalist.

Helloooo!!! Glad to see you both 😀. I'm going to each of my all-time favorite reactors and their channel's. Here's what I'm asking each of you:: I've seen that many of you have reacted to the band "JOURNEY", but what actually baffles me is that I've not seen in any of y'all's reaction lists, or requests, or more to the point-------that none of you have done a straight up reaction to this amazing band's most popular song/songs I say this because each of these two incredible songs are what is actually a COMBO song. Without doing these two songs being played together it's simply incomplete!! Hope that you both will be the first to react to this combo song, I promise you will NOT BE DISAPPOINTED 😉. Thanks for your time, and awesome musical uploads... your both doing a great work for sharing your thoughts about the music you share and seem to enjoy. Great luck for your future ahead 💛🎶🎶🔥💛🔥
    OOPS, I GUESS I FORGOT TO GIVE YOU THE BANDS NAME°°°JOURNEY°°°, & the song/songs is:)(FEELING THAT WAY/ANYTIME)🤗

And there it is in a nutshell!! This music and others from this time era is all I listened too. I hooked up with the 70's, and some 80's stuff, when the 90's hit, something unbelievable 😯 happened!! I actually enjoyed the new upcoming country music, after they all pretty much retired and faded away, this was the end of the road for me! From 95 on music is not music, it's all autotuned, fake singer's, no bands and definitely no talented Rhythm guitar, drummers, bass guitar, or any musical talent whatsoever 🙄 These desperate people calling themselves music stars, are both delusional, and downright embarrassing 😐.
Yep, I SAID IT, TRUTH IS TRUTH!!!
