Neil Young, 1970: "And I'm gettin' old."
Neil Young, 2020: "Hold my beer."
My daughter is a preschool director. A few years ago, she taught 3 yr olds. Every day, if everyone behaved, they got to listen to this song (which they loved). Can you imagine what a beautiful sight and sound to hear 3 yr olds singing this lovely song. 💜
At 58 years old it's not a lot of young men like you who appreciate the greatness of 70s rock music and icons
You bad!!!!
Could you imagine watching Neil Young in concert in 1972, and he says, "here are a couple new tunes" and then proceeds to play "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man." Those incredibly lucky people had to realize they were listening to all-time classics.
ted ritola I love It Never Rains in California. Have loved it for nearly 50 years, now.
Saw him in concert Jan. 23, 1973 in MSG. Just found some if my old concert tickets stubs.
We did, we did! My friends and I went to one show at the Opera House in Seattle which was fabulous for the acoustics of his beautiful Martin guitars and that voice.
This guy was soooo young when he wrote these songs, really is an old soul.
This performance always cracks me up - Neil fumbling around with his harmonicas - then goes into one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Thanks so much for this.
So Neil's mom lived in New Smyrna Beach, FL, where he actually went to early elementary school. Some time in the mid 80's I was performing in a duo doing mostly covers with a good friend. We heard that Neil was in town visiting his mom who was sick. We were playing at a local watering hole and there was Neil eating and listening to the music. On a break my partner insisted on going to tell him what a fan he was so we went over to his table. My buddy told him that we were huge fans of his and apologized for bothering him Neil was as nice as anyone could be and talked to us, even complimented our music. He is as nice a human being as his music is great.
Neil Young, (born November 12, 1945, Toronto, Ontario, Canada), Canadian guitarist, singer, and songwriter best known for his idiosyncratic output and eclectic sweep, from solo folkie to grungy guitar-rocker. Early career: Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Young grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with his mother after her divorce from his father, a well-known Canadian sportswriter.
Neil was born in Toronto, then spent his boyhood in Omemee, Ontario -- about 100 miles northeast of Toronto, before moving to Winnipeg in his early teens. -- About three years ago, he returned to his hometown of Omemee
e, and played a televised concert in small theater there. In his song, "Helpless", the opening lyrics... "There is a town in North Ontario
Dream comfort memory to spare
And in my mind I still need a place to go
All my changes were there." ....he's singing about Omemee.
The family was taking an extended vacation in the warm climate of Florida which they thought would aid in Neil's recovery from polio. And yes - Neil did attend Faulkner Street Elementary School, New Smyrna Beach, Florida, in the first grade from January to May, 1952.
Glad Neil was nice to you. He is a very nice man - but a little shy sometimes which makes a few people think he is not friendly or snobbish.
He's a great Canadian and we don't mind sharing him with the world. ;)
Yes, thankfully, he's still with us. As a matter of fact, he appeared as himself when Jimmy Fallon did a superb impression of him not too long ago, singing "Old Man". Look it up, now that you're aware of Neil Young, you'll enjoy it!
Yes! Neil Young as an old man singing Old Man is very poignant, and Jimmy Fallon does a really great impression of him. You can tell they both had fun dueting it.
I remember that seeing Jimmy even dressed up like Neil Young standing next to Neil singing together.
That was a great impersonation and then here comes the real Neil..Lol Jamel, you would definitely get a kick out of that Fallon performance!
This messed with my head the first time I saw it. Wtg, Jimmy Fallon!

At 74, Neil Young is still Rockin' in the Free World. He's a huge activist and recently became a US citizen so he can actively vote
Have you not figured out that Voting is a joke yet? And the Central Bankers own ALL the politicians and the media?
In 1969 at the age of 24 Neil was sick with a 103° fever and was bored so he sat down and wrote 3 songs.. Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River and Cowgirl In The Sand.. and forever cemented himself as a pillar of rock and roll as an ICON!!
Pulsar Lights no doubt man. Democracy is just a word, real gangsters run the world. The banksters
Neil Young, a canadian, one of the best guitar player ever !
Neil is close to 80 years old and still performs at Farm Aid every year.
Easy now. He's 75. Exact same age as my mom. They were in primary school together for a little while in Toronto in the 1950s.
A true lover of humanity. Philosophical pioneer whose music connects like no other...
"Needle And The Damage" brother. You know I won't steer you wrong.
Yeah. That’s a great song and one that will rip your heart apart. He’s somebody that I’ve always paid attention to. Just can’t help it.
renegade4dio the story behind the song shows where his songwriting was coming from; everything he saw and experienced. He’s up there in my opinion (doesn’t matter what I think) on the list of the best songwriters ever.
When he was young, he left Toronto and went to L.A. looking to join a Band. That Band was Buffalo Springfield (For What It's Worth!)
how about the fact that while he was in toronto, he and rick james had a band that was signed to motown until their drug addict manager squandered their money. the band was called The Mynah Birds.
@@czwirner Then he lured Rick to Detroit into the waiting arms of the F.B.I. who arrested him for Draft Dodging.
He also a part of Crosby Stills and Nash and Young.. My favorite is the song Ohio.
Was signed to Motown with Rick James in the group Mynah Birds (circa 1966). Motown had to let them go when Rick was found to be AWOL from the military.
Can you imagine.... he’s 75 now. Wow. He used to write about an old man.... now he is one. Time keeps on ticking away.
He makes some funny comments and then goes into one of the most powerful and saddest heartfelt songs ever!
That’s Neil Young! One of the greats!
😎🎸👏🏻
"Down by the River" by Neil Young is such a great song, despite its very dark meaning.
I keep seeing Al Stewart's "Year Of The Cat" get requested . . . if we're starting to move into these classic storytellers like Christopher Cross and Neil Young, now is the perfect time.
"I WANNA LIVE I WANNA GIVE" One of the most simple and beautifully profound lyrics ever uttered in a song.
Bless you Jamel..
I quoted this song when I toasted my brother and his wife's wedding. I was my brother's best man. I congratulated him on finally finding his heart of gold.
He recently became a US citizen after living there for a loooooong time (he's canadian in origin). The reason: He wanted to vote in the upcoming election.
Young is definitely a great artist. I love all his music. He should stay out of politics. Hes better that way.
Neil Young must listen: “The Needle and the Damage Done” & “Rockin’ In the Free World”.
this is an otherworldly song that comes from another time and dimension....... it is timeless...... Jamel is always struck instantly by the most meaningful parts of the song... " doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you..... I've been first and last, ...look at how the time goes past"...
Neil Young is still alive he's married to actress Daryl Hannah. Also neil young is one of the greatest singer songwriters of all time
Needle and the Damage Done. Yes, he is still alive. Great lyricist. He was so young here.Old Man gets me every time.
I just noticed he's playing two instruments at once😮 I don't think I've ever seen anybody else do that.
I must have listened to this track hundreds of times and I still get the chills every time.
Neil Young is a truly great song writer and performer, but what I admire most about him is the way he stands up for the downtrodden. The indigenous people of the world need more people to stand with them like Neil does. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻
Neil is one of the most special Canadians ever born. Great to see people discover him for the first time.
Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young...two of the greatest story tellers ever - both Canadian. Talents like this are extremely rare.
My dad raised me listening to Neil Young. I don't know if I would've been so fortunate to find him otherwise. That's a very sad thought.
I'm from Winnipeg, born and bred. Neil is one of ours. Prairie inspired, of the True North, and greatly under rated. Keep on Rockin in the Free World !!
The fact that once person is making all this sound is crazy
Jamel, myself being a white man I consider you as a brother, you bring joy to me with your music that you react to and your knowledge of music, Thank You Brother and God Bless you, I think you do have a Heart of Gold.
@@personalcheeses8073 Good point! All men are brothers; Jamal is one of the better ones.
Neil Young is so talented, and he’s given us many decades of beautiful music. Down the rabbit hole you go!
This performance was in February 1971. Neil Young was 25 at the time.
He's from Canada and showed up in Los Angeles driving a hearse when he ran into Stephen Stills who he played with in Buffalo Springfield.
Neil's still alive and kicking. He's 74 years old and he's married to actress Darryl Hannah.
Whaaaaaat? Crazy Horse married the mermaid?? Upped his already ultra cool status in my book there😀👍
Hell yes......surprised me with the Neil Young man...im lovin it...the same...check out the studio version with his full band but he is amazing alone
I've been listening to Neil for 50 years.Inspired me to play guitar
Listen to artists of the singer songwriter era,70s was my fav.
He was part of Crosby Stills, Nash, and Young. He spine out for Civil Rights. Southern man is powerful.
Neil has more talent in his toe nail clippings than 95% of today's popular music artists.
@@JB-xh5mc Just Kidding. I'm 55 and huge fan. Saw him i Denmark 3 years ago.
He's Canadian. Gotta love him! I love "Heart of Gold". Another good one from him is "Ohio" and "Cinnamon Girl". Hey Jamel, I'm 62 years old and I like some Hip Hop. I like it all! Music connects us all.
It's weird how Canadians seem to have the best songs about American tragedies ("Ohio", "Black Day In July", "Big Yellow Taxi", "Edmund Fitzgerald"...). Must be the distance that makes us comfortable writing about them, as opposed to the comparatively few writers (The Hip, mostly) that write about our homegrown Canadian ones...
he's also consider the "godfather of grunge"
Neil Young was one of the few artists I could kick back and listen to for hours back in the day. I would play side 1 and side 2 of every album we had,
When artists were about the music and not about the fame, money and Instagram likes.
And they actually had talent that didn’t need to be tweaked in the studio.
Ahh Neil was one of the same people like all others in the music industry making sure not one penny wasn't kept from him is as his right good on him.
Neil Young is still out performing, and still killing on stage. I've seen him at least 3 times, last time about two years ago as part of Willie Nelson's Outlaw Music Tour. He is amazing.
Neil Young is still alive! Celebrated his 75th birthday last Thursday November 12th. KXCI our local community funded radio station here in Tucson,Az.🏜️ Had a Neil Young Birthday special on the Thursday night show called "Half Time At the Apocalypse !" All Of Neil's great music for a couple of hours! 🎶🎼🎵❗
"Southern Man". Ole Neil called out racism way before it was stylish.
@@nodiggity9472 Calling out racism not racism itself so you misunderstood me.
They are still paying the price of ignorant Injustice, the new generation know it and will change it ...Peace and Safety..
Neil Young is still alive, thank god. "Old Soul" indeed. Try Harvest Moon, and I also love Cinnamon Girl.
You're so right...wisdom beyond his years....He cares about the music.and he cares about humanity....
The raw, authentic talent and heartfelt performance by Neil Young here, a collection of skin, cells.. stardust expressing himself/ itself to the best of his ability makes me feel a glimpse of the divine. It’s so pure 🙏🏻. Thank you Neil
"hey hey my my","my my hey hey","sugar mountain","powder finger","keep on rockin in a free world"☮️ out
Like A Hurricane live man. That one is just insanely good. Remember the video ?
Cool! Neil is actually the "father" of grunge though this is his folk side. You hear his rock style more on Hey hey my my, Powderfinger, Sedan Delivery, or Rockin' in the free world.
Yeah, he would be an all time great if all he did was his folk side, or his rock side. The fact that he did both is amazing.
Indeed. I gravitate mostly to metal, but did dabble a bit in my youth with various grunge and punk artists and such. The "strange" (to some people) thing is that throughout my life, I have attended more Neil Young performances than any other single artist/group. But, it actually makes perfect sense :)
Speaking of grunge he did a version of Rocking in the Free World with Eddie Veder of Pearl Jam fame. I could’ve sworn I saw it on Saturday Night Live in Fact! A great video. Love your reactions Jamal. 😁☀️👍
@@superdave3093 Have you heard "Mirror Ball" ? Neil Young heading Pearl Jam, guess Eddie was not there, or didn't sing.
Everything Neil Young does comes from his soul.
"Aw, this guy's a character..." That's what musicians did back in the day as they tuned their guitars for the next song, or as he was doing, found the right harmonica for the tune...it was called banter, and it filled those few moments between songs with interplay with the audience. 😊
He still takes his time sorting out his guitars and harmonicas while performing, and the audience just waits as they know he's worth waiting for.
Yes, he is very much alive.
React to: 'into the black'
Then 'out of the blue'
And recently married to someone as funny as himself ... Daryl Hannah. Can just picture their life as a married couple lol.
Check out "Cinnamon Girl", "Rockin' in the Free World", "Harvest Moon" and also go to Crosby, Nash and Young(CSNY) and look at their Music.
Seriously! CSNY simply cant go wrong. Please, please, check out Harvest Moon, most romantic aong ever
Type O Negative did a completely awesome cover of "Cinnamon Girl" that IMHO surpasses the original. Jamel needs to hear that one.
I'm watching your reactions for months now - and I must say that I love you.
Man you just said what I was thinkn. He has an old soul inside
You need to listen to “Carry On” by Crosby Stills Nash and Young. The Harmonies are incredible!!! And yes the Young is Neil !!!
I second both - first thing came to my mind was Suite Judy Blue Eyes by Crosby Stills Nash and Young EPIC!
The old hippie is still kickin. As much an activist as a musician still.
this is where I quit being a fan of his. His music is great.. just don"t want to hear your celebrity opinion.
Neil young is/was one of my all time favorite musicians, that being said I’m with jeff. Back in the day him and David Crosby , Steven stills, and gram Nash were on the cutting edge of political activism. Songs like Ohio spoke to that generation about the injustice wrought on the American people. He spoke out against the establishment and despised the man. Now he is the man, we become what we hate. To reach that level in the entertainment business a dues must be paid and when the powers tell you to bark , little puppy you better start barking. I’ve since stopped listening to his music because I no longer believe in him. I was a fan for 40 years, seen him in concert 9 times, there are many musicians I stopped listening to because of their selling out. Jamal brother man you should checkout joy villa. Look her up first see what she’s about then check out her music. What you know about bob Marley, bunny whaler, Peter tosh? There is a whole other genre to explore.
Jeff Klatt
Opposite for me. Wish more people, celebrity or otherwise were activists. Different strokes for different folks.
@@jeffklatt4835 He's always been political, if you didn't know then you aren't much of a fan. Keep on Rockin' in the Free World tho
Neil Young...'The Loner', 'Powderfinger' &' Pocahontas' are 3 classics I love. Oh Yeah.
Man he works that guitar.
Alive and well, married to Daryl Hanna now I believe. He's a full fledged member of the R&R Hall of fame, played with the Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills, Nash and Young. He's a legend. The fun thing about this show is that these songs were so new at this point, so you're seeing him playing them early on, it's brilliant.
When I went to secondary school in Canada, the 70's, we studied his lyrics in English class.
You were right he is DEFINITELY A COOL CAT!!!!! I am 61 now and hearing this again (it had been quite a while) made me feel really emotional.
This takes me back to another time and halcyon day
Yes, Jamel - We do care about you!!
( I love how you applauded with audience at the end of these two Neil Young videos - you do you, J! 😂🤣👍👏)
Be prepared to go down a 'Brother Neil' rabbit hole:
Harvest Moon
Keep on Rockin' in the Free World
After the Gold Rush
(His older bands)
Buffalo Springfield- For What it's Worth.
(Other band)
Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young
(CSN&Y)
OHIO
Carry On
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Southern Cross
Wooden Ships
Helplessly Hoping (this particular song 'gets me' every time)
STAY SAFE
If you get into C S N almost cut my hair would be a good one...love you dude!
Jamel's observations tell me he's a bit of an old soul himself. He's also obviously a really nice guy.
Next song should be Neil Young's "Philadelphia".
@@MatthewC137 That is a great song- it tears me up every time I hear it.
Check out Neil Young with Crazy Horse singing "Cinnamon Girl", one of my favorite songs.....
Try "A Man Needs A Maid." It's haunting; it really gets to you. Also you might check out songs he did as a member of Buffalo Springfield like "Mr. Soul" and "I Am Child."
Jamel_aka_Jamal, Mr. Neil Young Will Be 75 This November and yes he is still alive and he’s still keeps “Rockin’ In The Free World”, even to this day!! Stay Safe Brother, and keep pumping out those reaction videos as well, much love and respect to you. Cheers
Just saw him last year, 2019, in Eugene Oregon. First time I saw him was in 1969!
The studio version had Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor on backing vocals.
Yes he's still here, thank goodness! Neil's classic and always rocking no matter!
Still alive. Still smokin' with Willie and the boys when he can.
You will find Jamal, the more you react to neil's music, that Neil can't be pigeonholed into one genre of music. People want to lable him the grandfather of grunge, which i think is bull, Neil is rock, hard rock, folk, folk rock, country, and country rock. Depending on what mood your in Neil has a song for it.
I love when that light bulb turns on - "I know this song" :)
Neil is the Young in the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young video you reacted to..... LOVE him always and forever, he is the epitome of nostalgia for me...
Neil Young is the GOAT. “Southern Man” “Harvest Moon” or anything by brother Neil
Well I hope ol' Neil will remember. A southern man don't need him 'round anyhow!
Of course we care about you man, that's why we continue to invite you into our houses and lives to share the magic of music together
So glad you discovered these great artists like Neil Young, Jamal.
Next, CSN&Y! Great harmonies and lyrics, and more Neil Young, too. Peace!
Always loved his voice and yeah, he's a character all right. He's still alive. Heart of Gold and Old Man are my favorites of his. Jamel, and you make me so happy listening to our memories. Thanks!
Neil Young wrote so many classics. He makes me proud to be Canadian.
I say time and time again that he's one of your finest exports. Ha ha ha. He's my absolute favorite.
I'd say he's the greatest national treasure of Canada, coming from a European who doesn't really know that much about Canada. Regardless, people will be singing along to Neil Young songs in 2220, no doubt.
Between Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Rush, The Guess Who and Triumph... You guys have done good eh ?
I'm just gonna "like" this, while Neil sorts out his harmonicas...
@@amyadams2995 I really like Neil's attitude (regardless of whether or not it was displayed while "under the influence"), but yes, the unplugged format adds to that desired level of authenticity!
I liked when Jamel said “we don’t just listen to music here, we feel it.” Yes, sir. That’s why we live you
yes Neil Young a very old soul indeed. Very distinctive plaintiff haunting voice
Neil Young covers the spectrum of feelings. He had a recording studio at his Broken Arrow Ranch. I saw him a few times (not performing) at the CHATEAU LIBERTE in the Santa Cruz Mountains off Summit Road. For being as talented as he is.... he is a very humble man. He was born in Canada and had polio as a young boy. He has a wonderful catalog of music as both a solo artist and with groups like Buffalo Springfield and C.S.& Nash.
He, John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson STARTED Farm Aid.
My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) and Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)
One acoustic and one electric. Uncle Neil is one of the greatest of all time. Not as many people know his music now because he refuses to let his music be used in commercials.
Omg I just commented on this! Yes! CSNY! You MUST listen to Carry On. Suite Judy Blue Eyes. Helplessly Hoping. Helpless. These guys can harmonize! Beautiful music! ❤️
He's Canadian, but a transplanted American. We all love him.
Neil is the Young. From Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
He is still alive and singing.
Cinnamon Girl is a classic. When he was with Crosby, Stills and Nash they created some beautiful music as well. Good '60's protest stuff. You should look up Southern Man anything off of 4-Way Street album.
Jamal, we DO care about you! We love sharing the great old music of our youth with you because we know you will appreciate it like we did when we first heard it! Neil is one of the few artists who didn't sell out. Him and Bob Dylan. Stays true to his principles. Also want to mention that he had 2 sons with cerebral palsy. He created the Bridge School Benefit and gave annual charity concerts for 30 years in Mountain View, Ca. to raise money for kids with disabilities. I went to one of them where Paul McCartney played.
Never tire of Neil Young. Ever.! ❤
My day started off at the bottom...you, Mr Jamel, brought me to the top.
Thank you, sir.
Try "The needle and the damage done" and for a contrast "Crime in the city" live from the Weld album.
Neil's song Harvest Moon you must hear. You will love it!
I love your reaction to Neil Young bro, he deserves much respect and we are lucky that he is still with us. keep on rockin' in the free world everyone
Greatness. Yes, definitely an old soul here. Neil Young is forever. Timeless.
Just to be clear, Neil Young is one of the greatest singer-songwriters in history. It is a very, very short list of people who ever did it better than Neil, even when he was quite young.
