No matter how long it’s been since you started learning French, it is completely normal to have gaps in your French knowledge - especially when it comes to oral comprehension. That’s because most French teachers and programs put an emphasis on things like vocabulary, conjugation, and grammar, but never really address real, everyday spoken French.
In today’s lesson, which is all in French, I’ll share my top tips on how you can fill those gaps in your French comprehension. Not only will you practice listening to French with this video, but you’ll learn some of my best tips for future learning.

bravo, I've SO needed this! Merci. Slowing it down makes it make SO MUCH MORE sense to me. You are right, the French absorb sounds...and that makes it so much different than Spanish, which like English, has a lot of obvious consonants that make it easier to understand in speech. With Spanish I am picking out words that I know -that I can separate- and this makes it understandable much quicker. And this leads to confidence to keep going. In French I feel like I need to know several words AND the intent of the conversation. I can see this in translation programs which will erase the last sentence or two when the software figures out what is being said. I was in Mexico and by two weeks I felt confident enough to ask the basics and I understood the answers. In France no way. Too many short cuts, too much colloquial. I took 4 yrs high school French and 2 in college and felt like I didn't know how to speak it at all when in Paris. It was SO frustrating! Plus people were discouraging. I was lost and I stopped a woman and asked, "Ou est la metro?" She looked at me stern and said, "Ou est LE metro" and walked away! That never happened in Mexico. And I doubt it would happen here in the US but I don't know. This and the colloquial adaptations don't help people learn. Also, I have experienced Quebecois as being much more "chill" about the whole thing but that could be wrong I don't know.

If you only asked where the metro is, you got typical French answer; lady expected to hear more like: bonjour madame and pardonnez- moi and than a question. Maybe you would be lucky and get the directions.

Yeah, real everyday spoken french should be the priority. Then people can learn spelling etc later.

J'ai lu "au fur et à mesure" cent fois mais quand je l'ai parlé à quelqu'un j'ai dit "au fur et de mesure".
