I love this system so much. The lethality of the system and setting means that your players look for every opportunity to get stronger and willingly push their characters to the limit. Riding that edge and being 1 tramatic event from going cyberpsycho is a risk they sometimes willingly take until they are able to afford the therapy to pull themselves back from the brink. Never ran a game where my players embodied the ethos of the world so well with so little effort.

I reckon if you stole this system and slapped a fantasy filter on the abilities you could create a more interesting warlock character. Or any character that gains power from another entity. You lose humanity and the other replaces it with its own alien intent. Actual mechanical and narrative differences rather than just another spell caster.

@@demoneon9527 in Cyberpunk Red they've already done that for you. In one of the expansions theres an in universe MMO called Elfline Online that is Fantasy that uses the Red System but with Fantasy stuff. Could see a fun campaign of net runners where most of the adventure is in the MMO and meat space are the off episodes.

If you're asking about the video game version you're only required to get the basics for your HUD elements. In the ttrpg you can play the whole thing as a cyber virgin if you want.

Yeah, aside from a few examples, most cyberware in this game doesn't directly make you stronger as much as it makes you more versatile. At the same time there's a bunch of cyberware that have non-cyber alternatives.

I've had players partake in 40+ session long campaigns without a single piece of cyberware.

Honestly the cyberpsychosis makes nonsense and is really dumb. It sounds cool on paper but all it's there for is to lock your character from being op.
If getting my legs blow off and getting the replaced with cyber legs can make me go crazy and lose my character then the game sucks. Real life people don't go crazy, It's just a penalty on fun.

There are cyberlimbs that don't cost humanity for that very reason. The only cyberware that causes you to lose humanity are those that augment you beyond normal human capabilities. And its a calculated risk before you install the cyberware, you push yourself at the risk of losing yourself. Plus there is therapy to get your humanity back as well.

Lmao real life people don't install mantis blades in their arms to violently cut others to pieces

What do you mean in real life People don’t go crazy? It happens quite a bit.
And an example that actually fits within what you’re saying, you can develop psychosis from an injury, and that injury does not necessarily need to be a brain injury.
And with how they need to physically link these cybernetics to your nervous system and brain there is the chance for trauma/other psychological issues to become a factor.
Many amputees still have the feeling of that limb, and attaching something that would connect to the nervous system and brain but not properly send pulses of feeling can cause dissociation.
There’s a common occurrence from amputees where they do not properly feel themselves the idea of cyber psychosis is actually built off of medical. It’s pretty sound actually.
You need to go into the medical extremes to understand what the possible mental effects could be from something like this so with your original statement, real people don’t just go crazy is kind of true, normal people who live a life where they don’t go through certain things definitely.
But when you compare somebody who would be going through similar situation like an amputee cyber psychosis make a lot more sense
Like it is possible for somebody who has became an amputee to develop psychosis, add an extremity that alters the body high chance of that happening possibly even higher, especially with it being attached to a certain procedure
