I'm a chemist - your fear of metal and bentonite clay is misplaced. I think if you wet the clay and put more reactive metals in the mixture (like iron, copper, or aluminum) and let it sit for a couple weeks, the metal will become oxidized causing some discoloration of the clay. But this isn't something that occurs rapidly - it takes quite a bit of time. As long as you aren't storing bentonite in a metal container or storing something metal inside your bentonite clay, you won't have enough time for the chemistry to actually occur and have nothing to worry about. If you have a source of information that contradicts this, I'd love to see it. I suspect it is a non-chemist getting worked up over the fact that bentonite is considered a "charged species" or a "negatively charged ion". That just means it is an alkaline salt (kind of like baking soda - the difference being this is an alkaline salt of clay where baking soda is the alkaline salt of carbon dioxide. It doesn't even mean anything relative to its oxidation potential. It just so happens that salts (especially alkaline salts) speed up oxidation reactions with metals and oxygen in the air. In any event, I personally use metal spoons with wet bentonite all the time and it does nothing. Spoons are usually made of stainless steel which is quite resistant to oxidation anyway (if they weren't, your spoons would rust in the dishwasher), so that makes any reactivity even less likely.
You're totally right! I interviewed a geologist a while after making this video and yup, the common metal + clay fear is bunk (though feel free to scroll through the comments to see people yelling at me for using a metal spoon, ha). If you're interested in the article you can read it here: www.humblebeeandme.com/bentonite-clay-and-diy-beauty/.
I noticed that the bentonite clay reacts much much better when combined with apple cider vinegar. I actually despise using it with water because it just doesn't combine well with water at all. When mixed with vinegar you get a very nice smooth consistency!!
I know you posted this a year ago, but I only realised this about two or three months ago. It's made my hair masks so much easier to make now that I don't have to mix with water, wait 30 minutes, add more water, etc all day. Just one run through with some ACV to blend, then water to consistency, done! I've been making this mask for years and this has drastically shortened the time these past few months.
I live in Utah where a significant amount of the Bentonite Clay is extracted from the earth "Redmond Clay." I purchased 2 jars of the clay a couple of years ago one of the jars I mixed as was directed and one I left in it's powder form. My favorite story for the clay is I was curling my hair with a Hot 400 degree curling iron and dropped it, instead of letting it fall I grabbed it by the barrel and was burned quite bad. I was in so much pain first I grabbed some Lavender and drenched the palm of my hand and then I turned to the mixed clay and slathered it on my hand, I wrapped it in Suran wrap and could feel the heat being drawn in to the clay I did this about 5 times when the clay would heat up I just gently wiped it off applied lavender and followed with the clay and within a few hours no more heat but I left the clay on for about 12 hours. When I took it off there was only a slight pink to the burn and within a day or so I was completely healed. I cannot imagine what would have happened to my hand if I had not done this process, it was so badly burned.
Yes me too, I've got to try the Kaolin, for a mask the Bentonite Clay is really drying, I mixed it with some Charcoal it was too drying caused me some redness that took about a week to go away. If you get a chance go on the Redmond web site they have some pretty good videos about their clay and all the uses they have discovered, plus the clay is super inexpensive there too.
Don't forget bentonite clay is a swelling/absorbent clay so it'll be a different texture if left to sit for an hour or so...it blends nicely with oils too

For a moment I thought I will learn what kind of clay I have at home, it is in appearance similar to the bentonite one but the texture is more like the kaolin... My family get it from the market and is only know as mud from a close by lake ("Barro de Catemaco"). It is supposed to be green but I see it just plain gray, it is wonderful, I use it as a mask and it takes away all the grease and black heads from my face and all the dark circles and leaves a super soft, fresh and smooth the skin but no idea how else to use it. Well now I know there are many kinds and I must not use mine freely in any DYI recipe. Thanks!!!
Ooh, neat! How lovely to have locally sourced clay :) It sounds like you clay would be lovely in soaps as well-most of the clays with a texture similar to kaolin are easily swapped (unless the colour is important!).
Τhank you so much for these videos!! I am interested in starting making my own eyeshadows and try to learn some basics before I start! Can you make a video presenting the differences between pigments? By the way, can we mix mica with oxide?
I have a question about bentonite clay - you said it shouldn't touch metal once wet. If I'm adding it to just oils, does that count as wet? Or does it need to be something with H20? I want to make a diaper rash butter that contains bentonite, but am not sure how to whip it up? There is no water in the recipe, but obviously there's plenty of oil. Just not sure if that counts as "wet" or not. I can't find info on that and thought that your research skills are definitely better than mine, so maybe you'll know?
So, it turns out the no-metal-when-wet thing is total bunk! Woo! One less thing to worry about :P Give this a read to learn more: www.humblebeeandme.com/bentonite-clay-and-diy-beauty/.

I made this video years ago, so I don't fully remember what I did, but I am confident that I weighed things out properly as that's a pretty basic and essential skill :)
Hey! You'll find the answer to your question in my FAQ on my website at www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/can-i-mix-up-a-big-batch-of-this-face-mask-and-use-it-later/ 😊Happy making!
I only tried the Bentonite Clay mask, but I also want to try other clay masks as well. I just wonder what's the difference with Kaolin? I know that Bentonite Clay could suck up the oils decently. I just wonder what Kaolin Clay does?
Kaolin is definitely more gentle than bentonite (and has a much lower pH, which is a good thing-bentonite has a very high pH), but I still find it works really well for face masks. I have pretty average skin (not too oily, not too dry). I tend to prefer kaolin as I love the creamy consistency rather than the clumpy gel-like thing bentonite's got going on :)
I use bentonite clay in my shave soap pucks to increase slip, but that is quite a bit different than a balm or clay mask. I’ve been very happy with the results.
I don’t live in the States and I haven’t been able to find bentonite clay anywhere near me. Instead I bought kaolin clay, but all of the “recipes” I have use bentonite instead of kaolin: for example, I want to do an armpit detox and it uses bentonite. Do you know if it is ok if I use kaolin instead?
That was very useful. Thanks. Could please consider doing a vid on exfoliating beads! As far as I know, you haven't done one yet. I would love to make my own facial scrub. Sugar, salt etc is way too course for the face & we can't use micro beads. I'm finding it hard to research with satisfying results. Cheers
Thanks! The only bead type exfoliators I've used so far are jojoba beads and vitaburst beads, both of which are lovely, but I don't think I'd use them on my face. For my face I prefer chemical exfoliation, but if I do want some physical exfoliation I usually just do a clay mask, and I get more than enough of a scrub when I wash it off :)
Hi, if I use the kaolin clay for a lotion or deodorant will the paste linger? I mean, like, will the skin be whiteish or sandy when it dries? Thank you. I love your videos :)
If it behaves just like this, possibly, but otherwise I would suspect you have a different kind of clay. Mis-labelling can be rampant, especially on Amazon.
I used kaolin clay for my skin balms and I love the consistency!!! BUT now I have another issue that popped up...this clay gives my balms a honey smell. takes away from my essential oils. Don't know if it's a reaction from the kaolin clay and beeswax, but this smells like something a brown bear would rub on his coat! lol!!
That is very odd and I have absolutely no idea why that would happen. I'd probably just embrace it, honestly. You could try other light clays like French green and see if those produce the same results, but I have nothing to recommend and no experience with that happening in clay + beeswax recipes. Huh.
This is what i found out using kaolin clay with beeswax. When I add kaolin clay to raw yellow beeswax I get a strong honey smell, but when I use refined white beeswax I don't get that smell. So odd!
You can, though the traditional combo is bentonite and diluted ACV as bentonite is very basic (much moreso than kaolin), and the addition of an acid helps balance the pH. You may find that much ACV without a basic counter to be far too acidic for your skin, so be careful!
I have never found a good source for such claims, though they are very prevelant. For starters... how do you think the clay is mined and processed? They definitely aren't using plastic back-hoes to dig it up. I also interviewed an expert on bentonite, you can read that here: www.humblebeeandme.com/bentonite-clay-and-diy-beauty/.
Errr...the skin is the largest organ of the body is it not? I love my clay baths, and when I feel, congested, tired, fatigued, dealing with aches & pain therefore acidity - clays (along with magnesium sometimes), and the heat is soooo clearing, cleansing & rebalancing. Lots of differing opinions, all good though. Love your channel, content, sharing, and your personality. Bless ya!
French green clay is very much like kaolin, while bentonite is still, well, bentonite lol. You might find this useful: www.humblebeeandme.com/the-clay-experiments-the-french-clays/
I had irritation and strong itching when once I used bentonite clay in my melt and pour soap. I think I am allergic to it or may be because I mix it in a melt container
It's hard to say-it could also be something that was in the soap. If you used an essential oil or fragrance oil that could be the problem, or if the base contained SLS that is a fairly common irritating as well 🤔
Well, if it was wet (like a mask) and you let it dry for ages it might dry out your skin a bit, but I'd hardly call that dangerous. Just don't snort lines of it and it's pretty darn safe :)
That's like asking which is best, apples or oranges? They're different, with different strengths and weaknesses. I tend to prefer kaolin, but I know many people who prefer bentonite.
Thanks, Cassie! Happy making, and don't forget to check out my blog-I've been blogging for over 5 years and only on UA-cam for about 6 months, so the blog has waaaaaay more content :) humblebeeandme.com/
I just saw your video en i thought what te heck, I have all the ingredients I make it now! and I did! I like it so much! I would be a nice gift for my friends! ps. I am really into pH testing at the moment so I tested the mud solution and it came out as pH 6, so thats awsome for the face!
If your age between 14-28 i recommend you to dont use any acids to remove blackheads (eg Salicylic acid) i think the bentonite clay is best thing to remove blackheads deeply. Dont use blackhead peel off masks because just they dont remove the blackheads deeply they just cleans the the top of blackheads not deeply as you can see after using blackhead peel off mask the blackheads starts to come off from the spots again
Can you please tell me why every time i use clay no matter the type i get terrible breakouts?I tried using face masks with charcoal and green clay but i had terrible breakouts. My skin is not sensitive at all, It would be nice to get an answer
Maybe your skin is detoxifying. Acne sometimes can be a detoxing reason instead of bad reaction. Try it once-twice a week for a month and if you're still having problems or it worsens discontinue use.
The clays are drawing the impurities up to the surface. This is good, better out than in. When I only did clay masks once every 2-3 months, I always had a breakout after. Now I do it weekly, I don't. I think this is because I do it regularly, there isn't the build & not much to draw out. When I get a few small spots now & do mask, the next day they are clear. In the past it made them worse, ad I said, probably lots to draw out.
Humblebee & Me Oh, it does! But, it comes very fine and is tan. Quite expensive but worth it. Family owned mine. It’s the only one recommended for internal cleansing by a New York doctor who helped his patient detox lead, because it is clear of lead. Much Bentonite on the market can have lead. I got lead poisoning from using another in my toothpaste!
Thanks for watching! Do be careful eating clay, it is not something most experts agree is healthy: www.nutritionunplugged.com/2014/07/kick-clay-eating-curb/.
I've done quite a lot of research into this and this whole OMG METAL + BENTONITE = BAD! thing is grossly exaggerated and over-applied. For starters, the clay must be wet in order for the charge to be present, AND the metal must have the opposite charge to impact the charge of the clay. If you have a solid scientific source that says otherwise I would love to see it, because all I can find is bloggers parroting the same thing over and over again with no sources.
hurul zulkifli she mention it if only its wet. Do you even watch till end? Do not be paranoid. U need to fully understand why and when it cant use metal. Do not just jump into it. Do some chemistry research for bentonite. I’ve been watching her video for years. She been doing nothing but GREAT and HONEST. I love her tutorial and all reviews.

So odd!
Would it be okay to mix kaolin clay and apple cider vinegar?
You can, though the traditional combo is bentonite and diluted ACV as bentonite is very basic (much moreso than kaolin), and the addition of an acid helps balance the pH. You may find that much ACV without a basic counter to be far too acidic for your skin, so be careful!
What will be the effect if the Bentonite Clay mixed with water but string with a metal stick or store in a metal container?

Which clay is better for making deodorant?
I'd recommend kaolin as the pH of bentonite is quite high for a leave-on product.
My package of kaolin clay or huma/humus/ says that it SHOULDN’T come in contact with metal even if it’s dry. It can become ineffective.
I have never found a good source for such claims, though they are very prevelant. For starters... how do you think the clay is mined and processed? They definitely aren't using plastic back-hoes to dig it up. I also interviewed an expert on bentonite, you can read that here: www.humblebeeandme.com/bentonite-clay-and-diy-beauty/.
interesting video. would you say kaolin clay can be used as a detox ingredient for the bathing?
No, no clay is going to offer any kind of meaningful "detox" abilities-that's what our liver and kidneys are for :)
Bless ya!
My complexion is Wheaties color of my skin is always dull, any remedy should be whitening glowing and brightening permanently
Nothing will whiten your skin permanently. People are born with a particular amount of melanin.
great visual! Tnx!
Thanks! :)
Good to know since I was clueless
Thanks for watching!
Can I ask: Bentonite Clay vs Green Clay?
French green clay is very much like kaolin, while bentonite is still, well, bentonite lol. You might find this useful: www.humblebeeandme.com/the-clay-experiments-the-french-clays/
Merci
Merci! ❤️
I learned alot by ur big words❤❤❤😂
😄
Is it okay to use them together?
Definitely!
@@HumblebeeAndMe what skin type would it be okay to use with if both were used to make a black charcoal face mask
I had irritation and strong itching when once I used bentonite clay in my melt and pour soap. I think I am allergic to it or may be because I mix it in a melt container
It's hard to say-it could also be something that was in the soap. If you used an essential oil or fragrance oil that could be the problem, or if the base contained SLS that is a fairly common irritating as well 🤔
@@HumblebeeAndMe Ya it can be possible
What are the dangers of wearing kaolin clay on your face for long periods of time?
Well, if it was wet (like a mask) and you let it dry for ages it might dry out your skin a bit, but I'd hardly call that dangerous. Just don't snort lines of it and it's pretty darn safe :)
can i use kaolin clay in making "matte" tinted lip balm?
It's worth a try!
but which one is best
That's like asking which is best, apples or oranges? They're different, with different strengths and weaknesses. I tend to prefer kaolin, but I know many people who prefer bentonite.
Hi mam.kindly make the formula of hair straighting cream with keratin.
hi I'm a new subscriber and can alrwady tell I'm gonna love your videos, TFS I'll be making my way through all your videos :)
Thanks, Cassie! Happy making, and don't forget to check out my blog-I've been blogging for over 5 years and only on UA-cam for about 6 months, so the blog has waaaaaay more content :) humblebeeandme.com/
Hi have you heard of anyone using bentonite clay mixed with fo or eo for soap making to make the scent last longer?
Nope. I use a lot of clays in my soaps (rarely bentonite, though) and haven't noticed any difference in how long the scent lasts.
I just saw your video en i thought what te heck, I have all the ingredients I make it now! and I did! I like it so much! I would be a nice gift for my friends!
ps. I am really into pH testing at the moment so I tested the mud solution and it came out as pH 6, so thats awsome for the face!
How fun! :D Thanks for DIYing with me!
Bentonite with sodium or bentonite with calcium? I notice the two mix differently
Calcium bentonite :)
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
does kaolin clay clog pore.? can I mix it with ma daily talc?
I certainly have not found it to, but obviously pay attention to your own skin and how it reacts :)
I'm afraid I really can't. I'd recommend giving the articles here (simpleskincarescience.com/) a read, though!
Maybe your skin is detoxifying. Acne sometimes can be a detoxing reason instead of bad reaction. Try it once-twice a week for a month and if you're still having problems or it worsens discontinue use.
Принтиране ее make it yourself with real clay and acv
The clays are drawing the impurities up to the surface. This is good, better out than in. When I only did clay masks once every 2-3 months, I always had a breakout after. Now I do it weekly, I don't. I think this is because I do it regularly, there isn't the build & not much to draw out. When I get a few small spots now & do mask, the next day they are clear. In the past it made them worse, ad I said, probably lots to draw out.
Can I use kaolin clay in my night cream
Sure-I'd probably start around 1 to 2%.
Bentonite clay, also known as unscented cat litter
😂
Wetted?
Is this a real word?
You put kitty litter on your face?
No metal use that wht i know dear
I actually just interviewed an expert on this and it's pretty much complete bunk in the realm of skin care-watch for the interview on my blog!
www.humblebeeandme.com/bentonite-clay-and-diy-beauty/
The best bentonite clay from Wyoming is more like the Koelin clay
Hmm 🤔 If it doesn't swell like the bentonite in this video I'd be suspicious of its purity; swelling/gelling is a core characteristic of bentonite.
I really need kaolin clay
It's wonderfully versatile, I can't recommend it enough!
I can export quality kaolin clay to to you from Nigeria
thanks for blowing me a kiss,
Iv only drank my bentonite clay
I'll try rubbing it on my face now
thanks
Thanks for watching! Do be careful eating clay, it is not something most experts agree is healthy: www.nutritionunplugged.com/2014/07/kick-clay-eating-curb/.
It contains high levels of lead and aluminum. I wouldn't ingest it
5 n a half for kaolin ...
Bentonite 1 quarter of a teaspoon
pH of 9 I don't think that's high
It's not going to burn your face off, but it is roughly 10,000x more basic than human skin, and that's pretty significant.
H'WETTED
Can kaolin clay be used as mask for blackhead?
Yup!
Are you using metal spoon? If yes, viewer please DO NOT use metal spoon
I've done quite a lot of research into this and this whole OMG METAL + BENTONITE = BAD! thing is grossly exaggerated and over-applied. For starters, the clay must be wet in order for the charge to be present, AND the metal must have the opposite charge to impact the charge of the clay. If you have a solid scientific source that says otherwise I would love to see it, because all I can find is bloggers parroting the same thing over and over again with no sources.
www.humblebeeandme.com/bentonite-clay-and-diy-beauty/
hurul zulkifli she mention it if only its wet.
I feel like she's biased I really think she hates bentonite clay
Hahahahha...Im searching her vids for a way to incorporate my bentonite clay and I haven't found one.
Watch 9.14 thank me later...
