    If you want a ridiculously inexpensive but super effective cleanser, put about a 3/4 cup of whole oats in the blender and blend for about 15 secs or until you see it turn into powder, store in an airtight container. Mix with water to cleanse and with tea/honey for a mask but do not allow water to come in contact with your stored powder.
    The saponins in the oats cleanse your skin properly without drying it and it works for sensitive skin as well ;)

      Hi Tarena, lotions are quite tricky. I have been experimenting with them for years. If it's an actual lotion and not a body butter, that means that it contains water, which means it also needs an emulsifier and preservative. A body butter might be a simpler DIY. That being said, if you're up for the challenge of a true lotion, I love the suggestion of a video tutorial. Stay tuned because I hope to create some in the future!

    Ever since I was about 18, now 68, all I have ever used on my skin
    is a mild soap bar or liquid shower gel. After showering I
    use a very mild skin toner, then
    a very small amount of a light
    good body cream. Plus keep
    my face out of direct hot sun.
    I have a good complexion, no
    deep wrinkles, just a few nice
    natural fold lines as such. So
    feel all these skin products that
    cost extra money and clutter our
    bathroom shelves are they worth
    it. Maybe for some, but not me.
    Also hair conditioner. Have good
    quality thick, straight white hair.
    Found out a few months ago, that
    if I wash my hair and shower with
    Palmolive bath gel (750 ml size),
    it serves as shampoo as well. Can honestly say, now only wash
    my hair about every 4 days or so.
    It is not dry or... In fact, it stays
    clean longer and really shines.
    It is the purple coloured one with
    an orchid picture on the bottle.
    A nice gentle perfume too. Many
    people here in Zurich have asked
    what expensive products I use on
    my hair, then I tell them, they just
    bat an eyelid. But I guess if one
    has fine, curly or dry type hair then
    maybe it would not be good. I
    only use a bit on my hair - nothing
    more.

    I loved this video, it really opened up my eyes in knowing that the cosmetic industry doesn't have to pass through many of the FDA regulations! A question I have is what are some tips for someone who's impatient in seeing results? Also, what recommendations would you give to help begin the process of making my skin routine simpler?

    • @erikamartins9710
      @erikamartins9710 4 роки тому +1

      It takes about 28 days for a full cycle of skin cell turnover to take place, so keep this in mind if you're changing up your routine. New products can also sometimes have a brief purging effect, where your skin might look slightly worse before it gets better. Unfortunately, there are no miracle products and great skin takes time, but I hope this info will help you stick with a new routine long enough to really evaluate whether it's working for you. To simplify, I recommend eliminating everything but a good cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen, giving that a month, then adding back in anything you feel you are missing. Hope this helps!

    Hey there! I really love you’re videos they inspire me so much to move each day a bit closer to a zero waste lifestyle! My question is if there are any products that are natural and can help with certain skin conditions like eczema? • @erikamartins9710
      @erikamartins9710 4 роки тому +2

      Humans have relied on nature for skincare for thousands of years, and we have a great deal of cumulative knowledge on how to use it for our benefit. Natural ingredients are incredibly potent. They should be used carefully as should synthetics, because certain ingredients can be unsafe even though they are natural, but the fact remains that our relationship with the natural world is much more tried and tested than our relationship with synthetics.

    • @erikamartins9710
      @erikamartins9710 4 роки тому

      It's so hard to pick just one ingredient! I love jojoba and argan oils because they're so lovely, versatile, and great for all skin types. It's definitely a little bit harder to formulate some products with natural ingredients because recreating the texture, feel, and appearance people have come to expect from certain products can be hard without the use of synthetic fillers, texture enhancers, etc. The choice of necessary preservatives and emulsifiers is also quite limited for natural formulators. Regardless, the extra effort is so worth the end result of knowing exactly what you're putting on your skin.

      Hi Cynthia, I'm a big believer in masks, especially clay masks. I recommend using them regularly (about once a week) for the best results. If you're DIY-ing, you can always use a single clay that's good for your skin type (a few are referenced in the ingredients section of the video) and mix it with your favorite hydrosol. I have a background in architecture and design so I designed our logo and branding myself. I am so glad it caught your eye! Distilling things down to their most important elements and pursuing simplicity is the strategy I always turn to. You'd be surprised how long natural products last since they have no fillers and are therefore quite concentrated. A little goes a crazy long way! Between that and being able to reduce the number of products you buy overall, a sustainable, minimalist routine can actually be quite cost-effective.

    • @erikamartins9710

      The non-negotiable is a sun-protection product with a high SPF rating. You can also supplement the sunscreen with natural products that contain lots of great antioxidants. These help to fight free radical damage caused by sun exposure. Look for foods containing lots of antioxidants (e.g., blueberries), lycopene (e.g., watermelon), and omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., nuts and seeds).

    How do you feel about coconut oil for everyday lotion?
    It has been helpful but I haven’t felt nourished/hydrated. I have very sensitive skin and I’ve been struggling immensely to find the right thing.

    • @jengreen6859
      @jengreen6859 4 роки тому

      Alexandra Davis coconut oil isn’t a humectant so it won’t be able to hydrate. If your skin needs hydration, you need something that will attract water. There are lots of moisturizers that have ingredients like collagen or glycerine, which are both good humectants that most sensitive skin can tolerate. I have extremely dehydrated and dry skin and I predominately use a lotion based cleanser from Avene and moisturizer with cera ve or cetaphil, both have been really helpful. For my sensitivity I use zinc or cica based products for my serum to help rebuild a barrier on my skin. Maybe you’re sensitive because your barrier is compromised? I haven’t found any natural products that have been suitable for my sensitive skin, which sucks but sometimes natural isn’t better.

    • @erikamartins9710
      @erikamartins9710 4 роки тому

      I agree with Jen, oil on its own won't completely hydrate your skin and can in fact make it feel drier. That's why I always recommend applying oils to damp skin right after cleansing or showering, or after spritzing with a water-based product containing humectants. I would recommend trying this and possibly experimenting with another nourishing oil like avocado. A lotion, as Jen mentions, is another great option as it contains both emollients and humectants in one product. We are actually developing a body lotion at the moment, and I encourage you to follow us on social media or join our mailing list for updates about when it launches!

Opt for a gentle chemical exfoliant such as lactic acid, or if you really prefer physical exfoliation try something super fine and soft like oat flour or rice flour. Clay masks are wonderful for drawing out impurities from the skin and reducing the appearance of pores.

      You can look for shampoo and conditioner bars, or products in refillable containers. For styling, skip the conventional products and use natural plant oils like argan to tame frizz and increase shine.

      If you're using a gentle, high-quality face moisturizer, under-eye cream should not be necessary. The skin under your eyes is thinner and more delicate than the skin on the rest of your face, so gentle is key.

      Yes, absolutely, many great products can multi-task. Our own favorite multi-tasker is our Emulsifying Balm, which is great as a make-up remover (including eyes), overall gentle facial cleanser, and intensive moisturizing balm. I often use our clay mask as a gentle exfoliant too. Our Face + Hair Oil can moisturize skin and also tame frizzy hair and add shine. And I use our Lip Tint as a cheek tint all the time.

      Hey Elle! I'm not sure if you have a zero waste store in your area, but we stock Oneka there in bulk and I know a lot of customers love their shampoo. Otherwise there's also Plaine Products, which comes in refillable containers.
      I haven't had much luck with shampoo bars, until I started using the one I used now from the brand Humby Organics. I have a friend who has thinner hair though that doesn't like it, so I wouldn't recommend it since you have fine hair. I hope you can find something that works! It's a tough area!

    I don't know where you've gotten the information you presented in this video (did you read a script that the company sent you?), but any good dermatologist will tell you that parabens are stable and safe for the skin & natural fragrances are just as problematic/sensitizing as synthetic fragrances. I doubt any dermatologist would recommend products with essential oils to people with sensitive skin. Aside from that stuff, it seems like most of the information you presented in this video was accurate (I'm not a dermatologist, I've just done a bit of research and I follow dermatologists advice) but I'm very wary of the clean beauty movement because words like "chemicals", "synthetic", and "toxic" are usually thrown around by clean beauty brands to scare people. Advertising campaigns market to our desires, values, insecurities, and fears. I looked at this companies products and they seem fine, it's the mentality and marketing tactics that worry me. The products look good and high quality but they are at a high price point. There are many other sustainable skincare brands that offer high quality products at a lower price point and I would like to see you talk about them too.
    I really like you and your channel so please know I criticize with the hope that you will read it and hopefully learn and grow. I wouldn't say anything if I thought you wouldn't be receptive to hearing it. If you disagree with any of my criticism please respond with why you disagree. Thank you.

      Hey there! Thanks for the feedback - I did partner with Erika (founder of Oil + Water) on this video and as there was quite a bit to cover in regards to skincare, I did my best to condense the information we compiled together, so apologize if something came off the wrong way.
      Regarding parabens, fragrances, etc. - this was a generalized statement that I took from my personal research. There are massive lists out there, and I simply stated three in the video to make it brief. Parabens, in small concentrations, may be in approved products, but I do believe they should still be approached with caution. Using parabens in all sorts of products throughout our routines could cumulatively add up and create health problems. Regarding natural essential oils, I definitely don't want anyone to apply those directly to the face! I hope that did not come off in the messaging as we were looking to provide awareness about proper dilution regarding any essential oil use, as it's commonly used in quite a few DIY body products.
      I'd love to hear what other sustainable brands you know of that you think are also worth looking into though. I only know of a handful because it takes me forever to get through products. From my experience working with small businesses, I know that it's not easy to make ends meet with lower volumes while maintaining a high-quality product. Erika (the founder) is also the one that makes all the products by hand, which could add to product costs compared to a larger company with higher demand and complete manufacturing setup! Yet most of the high-quality products I do purchase from sustainable brands last much longer than cheaper options, and I've found that to be the case with all of Oil + Water's products which I've used for a few years.
      With any sponsorship I do with a company, I work with them because I think they will provide some benefit to my viewers. If you don't want to see these partnerships in the future, you can always exit out of videos that say 'includes paid promotion' on the lower left of each video. I hope that helps and thanks again for your respectfulness in giving feedback! (: Enjoy your day!

      Thanks for clarifying your thoughts on essential oils, I definitely don't think they belong on the face. Personally I find they don't offer much in the way of benefits and my skin becomes irritated by them, especially my hands and legs, but everyone's skin is different. :) I've been told by dermatologists that a few specific essential oils are fine for the body & face, I'm not familiar with which ones b/c I find it easier to just avoid them in my skincare altogether. I have limited knowledge of (helpful) DIY body products, that's another thing I need to look into. I forgot to thank you for telling your audience not to put lemons on the face, when I was a teen I tried that and it burned my skin. I'm glad there are people like you who discourage ill-conceived DIY projects like that. I needed that extra help when I was younger.
      I've never had any issues with parabens in my skincare products, and they don't irritate my skin. I'm very fortunate that I haven't developed any allergies to skincare preservatives. My derm thinks the paraben paranoia is severely overblown. She says the studies that show parabens are linked to cancer were poorly conducted and lack conclusive evidence that parabens are problematic in skincare. I don't work in the world of skincare & I have limited experience with reading scientific research papers. I don't know, but I don't think my derm has any reason to lie to me about this.
      Some cruelty free, sustainable clean beauty brands I know of are:
      Naturium - naturium.com/pages/discover
      Krave Beauty - kravebeauty.com/ (this one is pricey, but the products look very beneficial)
      The Ordinary (Deciem) - deciem.com/brand/the-ordinary (high quality and inexpensive, my issue with this brand is most of their products only come in 1oz containers)
      The Inkey List - www.theinkeylist.com/
      Youth to the People - www.youthtothepeople.com/collections/all (again, pricey, but the products look very beneficial)
      I haven't used any of the products from these companies, I'm still in the process of researching skincare & different skincare brands. I don't want to purchase anything until I'm relatively confident the products I purchase will work well with my skin, won't sensitize my skin, and the brands aren't guilty of greenwashing. Of course there are tons of other clean beauty brands, these are just the ones I'm familiarizing myself with. If you know of others (especially if they're free/mostly free of added fragrance & essential oils), please send them to me. I will also consider Oil + Water of course, their products have very few ingredients which usually means they're less likely to cause irritation. I'm glad you're able to support small businesses in your community. Thank you very much for responding, I love your channel & what you do. It's truly inspiring.
