i recycle, i reuse glass bottles and jars whenever possible, i try to minimise the amount of water i use while showering and washing my face as well. i stopped using make up wipes and invested in a silicone brush from foreo for washing my face and i carry cloth bags for shopping. i''m not perfect but i'm trying and i believe that's important

Thank you for doing this cass!! I’m part of that generation that was told that we need to start recycling and while we know that it’s important, it’s also likely that we have not been taught the details of HOW to recycle. The proper way to actually reduce, reuse, and recycle. Not just chuck a bottle or can into it’s own separate bin. 🥔🦋🖤

I'm a big advocate of 'only buy when it's empty'. There are products I really want to try but I will refuse until the current one it empty. They will still be there when my cleanser has run out! The only time I don't do this is if my skin has a major reaction. Let's not be product junkies people!

Not to mention, in almost every reaction video where she sees a product being used she thinks is good or interesting, she'll be so quick to say it's "in her cart" or something. LEt's not forget the shopping vlogs, etc. Influencers go through so many products and Cassandra is no exception. She does still indirectly (if not directly) promote overconsumption and I take issue with taking kind of a moral high ground? over this when I have a feeling Cassandra is far more guilty of overconsumption of products than the majority of people in this comment section.

Hey y'all do take note of your LOCAL recycling guidelines! Pretty much every recycling plant is different and you need to know what your specific one requires from you in order for the process to be efficient. Other local factors might have an effect on the overall eco-friendliness of the recycling process as well.
An example. Where I live (quite a ways from Cassandra -Helsinki, Finland) we are specifically directed NOT to wash plastic containers before recycling as that uses up a lot of water. We don't have a water scarcity problem as such but water treatment and heating uses up a lot of energy and as only 40% of our energy comes from renewables energy usage means pollution. What we are told to do instead of washing is only scoop or wipe extra product left in the container. With cosmetics this usually leaves the container clean enough for the recycling plants in my area and the plant can easily sort out non-suitable packaging if you happen to make a mistake. However, if the container is still very dirty after scooping (as can be with food packaging or maybe very oily cosmetics) it's better for the environment to put it in the non-recyclables bin than to wash it. One condition for this to make sense is a modern (and cleanish) mixed-waste incinerator plant that we have locally that produces energy for the district heating system. On an area that uses a garbage dump or ships mixed waste to a far away local it could well be that all means of avoiding mixed-waste are recommended.
Overall, just be mindful of local conditions before washing used packaging. It might not be necessary and could even be harmful to environment. Sorry for the rant. 🙈 I love that this channel has content on skin care ethics!

I've begun investing my money in the real ME rather than the made-up, societal pleasing "me". Instead of wasting money on new makeup products, clothes, and home decor, I have taken up thrifting more so than ever to reduce the market need that, in turn, generates new items to be produced. Throughout my time doing this, I have been overjoyed to find and pick unique items that truly stand out to me and that aid in me feeling that I have made a conscious, thoughtful decision in what I allow into my life. Walking into major retailers, malls, and perusing online sites no longer instills that WANT in me because I now understand that even though I may think something is beautiful or convenient, I do not absolutely need it. What really helped me get this down was when I began shopping for housewares. I had SO much stuff at home and clutter was piling up...I made the proactive decision to donate all that I could in order to declutter and feel more comfortable in my home environment. I took on the mindset of functionality. If something is unique AND I can use it for a certain purpose that fits my lifestyle, I make the choice to put my money towards it. Even with that, I later learned to research companies and pinpoint what THEY support, if they have any environmental/eco-friendly labeling, and what that means in their eyes. As a child, I had an affinity for sweet tea and fell in love with a brand that had witty or insightful sayings on the inside cap. The one I have thought about since then said, "What you own also owns you". Hearing that changed my view entirely on consumerism and my role within that as a part of the societal whole. I am so grateful for that little tea cap as it has stuck with me for well over a decade. Thank you for sharing this video, I feel as though this subject needs to be addressed more widely, it was thorough and informative

At first I was excited about this brand, but after visiting the website and taking the quiz, less so.
I'm an amateur cosmetic formulator. I make some of my own skin care, using the same ingredients available to the pros. I learned what makes a good formula, and how ingredients should be combined. You can't tell everything from an ingredient list, but you can learn a lot.
I like that Yours includes full ingredient lists. That's a plus.
However, their "active Swiss ingredients" don't appear in the list! Well, they might, but under different names. I consider this a little bit shady.
A great formula has preservative - no exceptions. There are natural preservatives ... but in many of Yours' products, I don't see preservative ingredients listed. They may be using something I don't know, but they may also be hiding something. [You can get away with less preservative (not zero) in a true airless pump, but if you can open the bottle, it's not airless.] As a contrast, Paula's Choice not only has full ingredient lists on their site, they explain the purpose of each one.
Finally, the quiz. I'm part of the vast "50+" group, but I have very good skin I've always taken care of: few wrinkles, no age discoloration, a very little sagging. [My photo was taken at age 54.] I answered the quiz truthfully ... my products had ingredients to reverse pigmentation!
I don't think I'll be buying from them. I'll stick with Paula for my retinol, AHA and BHA, Korean sunscreens, and make my own basics.

Hi Liz, thanks for sharing your honest feedback, happy to address your concerns:
Regarding the active ingredients, as per the regulatory requirements, we display the complete ingredients list with INCI names. Each active ingredient is a combination of multiple actives, for example, Pinolumin which is a Swiss stone pine extract is a combination of these- Aqua & Alcohol & Pentylene Glycol & Pinus Cembra Wood Extract. Another example- Miniporyl which is red clover flower extract is combination of- Isopentyldiol & Trifolium Pratense Flower Extract.
Based on your feedback, we are taking away a learning to add the INCI of each active separately and we are also working on colour coding the ingredients based on EWG safety rating to make it easier for our users to read the ingredients list. As a young start-up, we are always looking to learn from the experience and feedback from our customers 🙂
As for the preservatives, we do use safe and gentle preservatives like SODIUM BENZOATE, POTASSIUM SORBATE, etc. We believe in complete transparency and all the ingredient lists on our website are 100% complete, there are no hidden ingredients.
Lastly, the recommendation you would have received for ageing skin must have been full of anti-oxidants (which also reverses pigmentation). With age, the skin barrier function naturally weakens, hence, anti-oxidants are all the more important to protect ageing skin from damage caused by oxidative stress. Oxidative stress in skin plays a major role in the aging process causing wrinkles, etc. Hope that explains why you were recommended anti-oxidants in your routine.

Maybe we should all aim at using less skin care and or use more local (indy) brands? Fact is we get a daily tsunami of products forced upon us through Social media and influencers who seduce us to buy. We scream for influencers and celebrities to start their own skin care line, which sells out like crazy. And I don't even want to mention the burden on the environment because of all the shipping, wether from Hong Kong (Yesstyle) or Switzerland 😉
Also, how weird is it that glass jars can't be recycled when there product still left in them! Where I'm from (the Netherlands) we are allowed to hand in half full wine bottle or jars with residu in them.

I use everything I can in a more eco friendly format. For example, shampoo and conditioner bars, oils or bars for the body etc. but when it comes to things like toothpaste or skincare, I am very cautious. for example I would never in my life risk my teeth by using diy toothpaste and with toothpaste tabs, appaerently they don't contain enough fluoride. And when it comes to my skincare, yes, most products I use are packaged in plastic, but I really minimized my routine. Also, I don't eat fish, so that's probably the most impactful thing I do when it comes to plastic and the oceans

I've mentioned it in Shelbies videos and I will mentioned it here again; if you want to start a zero waste life, move into rural Africa! I didn't plan it but it has been a huge factor in my consumption and awareness of everything. And also, I am a scuba instructor and live by the beach, so everything that gets thrown into the ocean, comes to your beach with every wave! I see our landfills full of plastic and they are getting burned despite all efforts that we try (unfortunately there is a big chin ese influence here). I am proud that reusing and reducing has become a big part of my life where indeed, all my jars and cans work as decoration in the garden or in the kitchen. Crafting is the only place that I dedicate my DIY now after being educated by your channel and others! Keep it up Cys-ter. Love your content

Maybe I missed it but how are caps recycled? Do they collect them from customers and recycle themselves? Because from my experience all the pumps, spray and other multi-component caps are VERY DIFFICULT to recycle and are most likely not recycled by city system (but are recycled by someone like terracycle)
Also on their website they say to reuse the bottles but I couldn't find quickly how to purchase refills. But maybe it was somewhere deeper on the website

@Cassandra Bankson do you have thoughts on silicone (whether cyclic or linear, natural or synthetic) being deposited into waterways, ingested by animals, contributing to "sludge" in city water systems, etc? In the past, you have said that they are safe for topical use, but the environmental impact has not been addressed. To my understanding, the environmental impact of silicones in the beauty industry is unknown and research is needed.

I am so sick of some corporations telling consumers that we need to do more!!! As someone who does a lot behind the scenes with recycling, composting, and sustainability, I am beyond pissed about all these companies taking advantage of earth day to spew such bull about the minimum effort they are doing and how as consumers we need to do all these things with their products in order to do our part. Yes, I do believe all small changes anyone can make, do in fact matter. However, can we stop pretending that us as consumers can on our own fix the problem. We need corporations to be responsible for the new plastic and other materials they are creating to make products, they also need to be responsible for ensuring recycling processes are actually available to majority of their consumers before they preach about consumer responsibilities. I could go on but I think this is enough for now!

I do recycle everything that can be recycled in our city Saratov. I also try to buy those products that are in recyclable packaging. It is sad that not a lot of types of plastic are recyclable in my city. Hope this situation will be improved in near future.

Ordering overseas for more plastic doesn't seem ideal for many. But for folks more local (and willing to spend) seems like a cool option. Seems so lush to use! Edit: not loving that they have disposable pads for one of their products, but the price for the basic routine isn't bad!

Hi there! Our Clean Slate Exfoliating Pads are indeed recyclable as they are made of a cotton-blend and are recyclable with textiles. The outer tub packaging is made of Polypropylene (PP), a 100% recyclable thermoplastic polymer widely used for different products. The inside cap is made of Polyethylene (PE), which is fully recyclable as well.

But... I don't like that we as consumers have to do all this work and thinking. It should be the labels, the factories, whoever is part of producing and recycling the products, that should take care of that and not our responsibility! /:

I think I would recycle more if I had a dish washer, however I am a college student, so I don't.
Also I wish I could be more sustainable with skin care but it is very difficult. I have eczema, and occasionally get folliculitis that takes forever to go away. I also have body acne, and I easily get streach marks. Sometimes I have to wrap my skin with gauze with different cream, serums, oils, and ointments to see a difference. I recently have started to use advanced clinicals retinol and collagen lotion, which has helped. I am 19 so I find my skin a little annoying. I know brands are doing customized skin care for faces, but I think they should also do it for bodies.

I have a question, we might sort stuff properly but we still put it in a common container with people who likely don't do it properly, it's not like those companies trust people to do it 100% properly either and I just don't believe they go through every single pieace of trash and evaluate it... so how does it work in the end?

    • @emmaswan6219

From what I've read, it all goes through a massive machine and is separate out into recycle or not. I'm assuming there is some fancy machine learning going on. If there is food in containers it can't identify it as recyclable. Anything not identifed goes to the dump. Us sorting prior helps the machine out so more overall gets recycled. Where I'm from if you don't sort your recycling correctly they won't take it.

I'm new to skincare, and I just inherited a little bit of money. Bad combination! I use bar soaps for hands and sometimes for face. I'm oily and the high quality face bar soaps don't strip my face.
I don't have a lot of money usually, and I really don't consume a lot of goods generally. I rarely buy clothes, I don't buy new furnitures, always used. I share a car with my mom, we live close and that works for us. I actually do quite a lot that is sustainable. And the splurging in skincare is short term. I will probably retire to use differin, vitamin c, moisturizer, bha/aha and sunscreen in the future. But right now I really love Korean skincare rituals. It's so meditating and fun, and the skin looks radiant.

I really like your videos and this one is no exception. However, I do have issues with the brand claiming to be “swiss skincare”. It is produced in Switzerland (the website does not give further details), however, the return adress is in Singapore. Additionally, free shipping is only offered for the Us, Australia and Singapore. They do ship to Switzerland, however, they do not disclose any information, where they ship from. The website is not available in any of our four official languages (german, french, italian or rumantsch).
If they (and you, for that matter) said, “produced in Switzerland” I would not have an issue. The phrase “swiss” suggests that it is a swiss company, which is not the case. Please differentiate in the future, especially if you make the claim about how “expensive swiss skincare normally is” from the video where you initially reviewed the brand.

Hi Linnea! We're truly sorry for the confusion here and we understand how it can be confusing (we'll make a note of it to update our comms!)- our HQ is based in Singapore, and we ship either from Singapore or the US where we have a local fulfilment centres, depending on where you're based. That said, all our products (with the exception of Clean Slate Exfoliating Pads) are made in Switzerland, where our laboratory is located. The origin of the products is Switzerland and hence, we claim "Swiss-Made" but we do not claim to be a Swiss Company anywhere on our website. We're a young start-up and working hard towards launching in more countries soon 🙂
Rest assured, we are not up to any shady business. I'm also sharing the story of our founder here-thriveglobal.com/stories/use-a-selfie-to-create-hyper-customized-skin-care-products-with-candice-georgiadis-navneet-kaur/

I love this!! Once I’m done with some skincare I’d love to use this brand. I did a project last semester on the future of plastic pollution and how it can be managed better. One thing that gave me hope was that PS and other plastics can be made in combinations that scientists are testing to show a much faster degradation. This information can be used when plastic is manufactured. Also, one study showed that when PS is photochemically oxidized it breaks down much faster than previously thought (because previous studies were based on the biological composition vs during a reaction with sun & water) and breaks down into carbon dioxide and dissolved carbon. I’d like to send you my presentation if you’re interested. I should note my chemistry and biology knowledge is mostly beginner from pre-med style classes.

In France and Belgium (that I know of), you don't need to rinse your glass containers before recycling, because they already rinse them during treatment... So please, only rinse your glass if it is explicitly required to do so, otherwise you're wasting water!

I understand that you’re talking about a specific brand but a huge thing you can do for the environment is avoid plastic packaging. A lot of recycling is actually thrown out and plastic is the worst for it. Better alternatives include: cardboard packaging, reusable packaging!

    • @lovefromyours
      @lovefromyours 3 роки тому +1

Hi there! We hear you, and our packaging is actually entirely reusable. We're a young start-up and with our next round of funding, we're working towards launching refill packs of your personalised skincare, which will be a much more cost effective and environmentally-friendly option for you. Our bottles also have an airless pump inside which prevents any product from sticking to the walls which makes recycling easy.
Above all, we believe that the biggest step towards sustainability we all can take is to reduce the wasteful consumption which is sadly rampant in the beauty industry due to the problem of trial and error involved in finding the 'right' skincare products. The magnitude of wasteful consumption is huge- Cosmetics industry alone produces 120 bn units of packaging every year! At Yours, we are on a mission to make skincare simple and sustainable by using technology to create a minimalist personalized routine. We combine 6-10 actives in every formulation so you don't need an elaborate routine to take care of all your skin needs.
We have also published our sustainability roadmap for everyone to follow our sustainability efforts here- yours.sg/sustainabilityroadmap
