How I Lubricate My Harbor Freight

- This video shows how I lubricate my trencher. I just use a needle and rubber seal on the flush fittings. I am not sure if this is the proper way to do it. but it works for me so far.

Handy little machines. Since this video I found a grease adapter set at Northern tool that has an assortment of tips. There are some rubber tipped ones that work better on the fittings. This is the one I use now www.northerntool.com/products/roughneck-11-piece-grease-gun-accessory-kit-includes-carrying-case-109826
and much less mess. A M18 grease gun really speeds greasing up. Thanks for subbing and watching.
@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 Thanks for the response. I'm going to look into that adapter set. I use a Bravex pistol grip grease gun and it's been a reliable tool for me so far. The zerks on the Nortrac seem to work fine so far as well. I have the tip that locks onto the zerk and it's all good... no need to replace any at this point, which I'm obviously happy about. I believe you mentioned that you are also a welder and that's a skill I've been thinking about trying out. I saw a relatively inexpensive unit on the HF website that I'm probably going to purchase soon. I want to be able to do some rudimentary fixes on tools, machines, etc. I'll be 60 this year but I guess one is never too old to learn. Thanks again.
My father in law gave a grease tool he said was used on has 1977 Bronco and it works great.
I finally found one that works better at Runnings. Started replacing those fittings with regular grease fittings now. Thanks for watching.
Did you just tap where the zerk fitting is? Put a regular fitting in.
Have to drill them out and use a pipe thread. Then screw in the fittings.
I use the same thing I use to grease chain bar on the chain saw.
I have to start doing that, I usually just rely on the chain oil to lubricate the tip. Thanks for watching.
the harbor freight kit has a needle fitting that fits perfect on my trencher. I connected it direct to the grease gun instead of using it as a zerk extension. seems to work great.
I tried to find that kit and none of my local Harbor Freight stores had one. Thanks for the info. I recently made another video showing some of the Plews fittings that were also recommended by others. Thanks for watching my video.

Thank you so much for doing this video. Also thanks for going so in depth with how many and the location of the grease zerts. This is by far the best greasing video I've seen on this trencher on youtube. I always wondered how you're supposed to grease the backhoe. How often do you grease it? That's weird that some of the grease zerts fell out. Glad you fixed them though. Were they loose or stripped? It looks like they improved greasing that main boom swing pin. Goneredcar on UA-cam had his main pin get really loose with use.
I grease it before each use. The grease is cheep and it only takes a couple of minutes. If you buy one I would replace the boom swing grease fittings before using it. They were poor quality, not fully threaded and the broken one was a pain to remove. I don't know how long the pins will last, but they look easy to replace. I am still looking for something that is easier to use then the needle. Thanks for watching.
I see Harbor Freight has a kit with several different adapters that i will look at next time I am there. I may also try NAPA.
I know Rural King has them... however, they are not located in a lot of states.

I wonder if you can drill those holes out and put standard zerks in them.. Just thinking outloud.
Would make it easier to grease. I am trying to find one of the pin greasers that was recommended by another subscriber. They should supply one with the machine.

I had the top zerk fitting break off just as happened on your machine and I have ordered the same screw extractor set that you used to remove the broken off piece. I plan on removing and replacing the other zerk that did not break off as a precaution. It looks difficult to get to the the zerks back past that small hole in the unit both to remove and replace it. Do you have any suggestions / tricks / tool suggestions for getting back through that hole to remove and replace the zerk fitting. Thanks in advance for your help. I appreciate the great videos!
I just used a 1/4 socket. You can put a little tape on the grease fitting hex to make it fit tight in the socket.
NO, NO needles, how do you know you are not mangling the spring! The pressure of the grease is what pushes the ball back with zerk and other fittings. The correct adaptor for flush fittings is the Alamite Z-727, made for the flush fittings. Grainger, MSC, I got one on ebay for $8.
There are newer videos showing the rubber tip also. Both work but the fittings suck so I am drilling them out and replacing with zerks with a ring. Thanks for watching.
Didn't see you do anything with the main boom pin the one with the sleeve? That one isn't greaseable?
I fixed that in another video. They snap right off and need to be replaced with a high quality fitting. Thanks for watching.

I don't remember exactly which video it's in but I just used a easy out and replaced with one from a good quality metric assortment of grease fittings from Nappa. It's burried so use something to keep it straight in the socket to avoid cross threading . These are tough little machines, don't anchor them to anything else to try and make them exceed their capabilities. I have seen others damage them by doing that.
Just bought the trencher from Princess Auto here in Canada and just like you I broke the zerk. Just ordered the extractor but would appreciate if you could tell me how you put the new ones back in. Is there a special tool for the job. Thanks and much appreciated!
just put some grease in a socket that is the right size to hold the fitting. will keep it from falling out. Thanks for watching.

Question; The digger can be set up for two dig depths, 5 foot and 7 foot. It looks like the only reason you would need the shallower 5 foot setting is (if I understand the manual correctly) to be able to use the locking pins for "transport". Do you know if this is correct? If you are parking your trencher for a while do you use the locking pins? Do you typically lower the bucket, etc. to remove pressure from the hydraulic system when it is parked? Thanks.
I have mine set for the 7 and the locking pins work to keep things from drifting when transporting or storing. I just use that boom lock but you have to remember to unlock it before using. I didn't once and put a bend in the pin on the arm. You could set it down also as you say.
Your local chainsaw shops carry a special tip to grease chainsaw bars.... thats what you should be using instead of a needle greaser.... its faster and easier to do.... Doc

Also I don't know about anyone else but I bought mine at Princess Auto (Canada) and on mine I had to reverse 2 hoses .. On the first 2 sections of the boom on 1 if you pulled the lever towards you the boom stretched out away from you , the next lever if you pulled the lever towards you the boom came towards you .. This made if confusing so I changed the hoses and now both sections of the boom come in when pulled back and go out when you push the lever away .. and all the numbers were right it just didn't seem right to me ..

Great video! I recently got this trencher, and when greasing it the zerk fitting broke off just as happened on your trencher. Can you tell me the part number of the vermont american screw extractor set you used ? Thanks
It is a Vermont american #21872. Any type of extractor should work because it removes fairly easily. Go gently with the smaller size extractors because they can break with excessive force. My trencher has been a great little digger. Thanks for watching.
I've enjoyed all of your HB freight backhoe videos. So much I got one for myself which was delivered today. I plan to assemble it tomorrow but nowhere in the manual does it advise what hydraulic fluid to use. What do you use?
I just went to tractor supply and picked up a 5 gallon bucket of the cheapest tractor hydraulic fluid they had. You could call the support line and see if they reccomend one but it all is pretty standard for equipment like this. I will check the name on the can tomorrow. Also I found that some of the valves had to have the hoses flipped to make it easy to operate. Have fun, it is a handy little digger.
Somebody was complaining about the valve bodies getting sticky after some use with the tractor supply fluid. I plan to use a hyd fluid Costco sells.
I used the Super S SuperTrac 303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluid in my trencher and my log splitter with no issues. It is a 20 weight and recommended for most tractors. I think the ford fluid that is mineral oil can cause seal compatibility issues if you try and use that.
I went with some 303 I picked up from O'Reillys. Have about 30 hours now on machine. Glad to have it.

On a side note, I changed one of the levers so that the swing of the arm going left and right is not different. It was confusing for the far left lever to go right when I pulled it towards me. If that makes sense. I know you talked about changing one which one did you change if any?
I changed that one and also the boom up / down one. Lucky is is easy to just switch hoses.
Been thinking of reversing some cables to feel more natural to what I expect, but trying to just get the normal use ingrained in to me.

I have not used it lately. The last couple of weeks have been spent putting up all the veggies from the garden, and now I am trying to catch up with all the yardwork I didn't do when it was so hot. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will have some time to work on stumps again. I started a big walnut stump that will probably be the next stump video. It would be nice if they sold a pin with a o-ring seal built in. Thanks for watching.
