My machine was acting the same way. I read through many of the comments and paid most attention to those from Lynn Russell who obviously has the credentials for this topic. It was very easy to take the four allen head screws out of the relief valve to take it off. Nothing seemed to be wrong with it. The valve itself was still smooth and polished. So I left the ignition switch OFF and gave the starter cord one good pull. A gush of fluid came out. It's fairly milky so I guess I should change it. But after I put it back together it's working as normal again. I can only conclude there was some gunk keeping the relief valve open. I'm very thankful for Lynn's comments and that a safe and very very easy fix worked. It's easier than swapping the hoses would have been.

    • @HoodHandyman
      @HoodHandyman  2 роки тому +2

Before you anoint Lynn keep in mind if it wasn't for me you would have never seen Lynn's comments and we all can agree that there is dirt, sludge, or something causing this in the line . How you handle the situation is up to you. Most tried my method and worked fine. Not alot of people feel comfortable messing around with that box. Which could open up a can of worms.

@@HoodHandyman I'm not criticizing you. I'm glad you tried something and put it out here. I'm just saying there is a method that also seems to work and doesn't risk anything. As a matter of fact, it hardly opens the hydraulic system up like moving hoses does. I thought about moving the hoses and then, with the switch off, pulling the starter cable instead of actually starting the motor. That also wouldn't have any risk. But opening the valve goes straight to the probable source of the problem.

Took a while because of its small bucket but got it done. Many more jobs done since and still going saving money. I learned something new the other day. If the needle fittings wont take grease just get the pressure from the boom off the pins and grab the pin head with a large pair of channel locks. Rotate them 180 degrees and the grease will fly right in. Support the boom out on the machine on the bucket to get the pressure off the pins as needed to turn them. Take care buddy.

Hi Everyone !, I have an HF Backhoe that is having similar problems today 5/6/2023. I purchased my machine in June 2020 which arrives in September 2020 during the pandemic. It has been a great unit with no real issues until today. I fueled up the machine after a long 2022/2023 winter being outside due to no inside storage. It still fired up on the first pull and the controls worked fine enough to get the machine turned around to descend the side storage small hill to the main backyard. While descending the controls started moving rather slowly when pushed all the way in, either direction. At the bottom of the hill, I boomed out & bucket down to the ground to prepare to move the backhoe; when the backhoe controls suddenly just quit working! I have operated some John Deere & Case heavy equipment in the past but never experienced anything like this before. The first thing I did was to check the pump....It was "OK" and still pumping fluid. So I thought I would research the issue on UA-cam and found this video. This will be a great relief when I try this to see if it works for me.I will post update results after I try this fix. This was very informative Handy Hoodman and Thanks for the tips too!

Reversing the flow and the very lengthy explanation that really had no answers is a bit scary.
That being said, it seems like a lot of people had similar situations and did try this, so maybe it isn't as dangerous as I would think.
I found this in trying to find the videos pertaining to upgrading the hydraulic pump, in order to get a bit more flow and overcome the sluggishness and inability to work more than one control at a time.
Since getting this two years ago, I am surprised at the amount of people that are on UA-cam with one.
    I love it myself.
I keep thinking of ways to add to it. I would love to be able to put a scoop bucket on it, as well as an easier way of moving it around.
Right now I just set the bucket in the back of my John Deere lawn tractor trailer and lift the backhoe enough to clear the front legs and then I can quickly move it around the property.

I am switching out most all the hydraulics on mine. Putting joystick control, 16 gpm pump, relief valve, and larger lines on the top of the cylinders. I only have 15 hours on this machine and when I dumped the hydraulic oil I couldn't believe how dirty it is. Plus they used Teflon tape on some of the fittings which is a big no-no on hydraulics. So it's no wonder that you are having problems with stopped up valves. I am going to flush my system out before installing the new stuff.

Hello. Just read this about swapping your valves , n pump out. What about the fittings for said items??? I have heard that these are plumed with Chinesim fittings with oddball hoses and threads. I'm thinking about getting one of these motor shovels and have gotten use to joysticks as well. The old Ford Backhoes had 4 stick control back when I was a kid. I've torn some crap up trying to use them , and hafta face dad , n Grandpa. Anyway back to the subject , where were you able to get your parts , and were they expensive???

I ended up completely redoing the hydraulics and hoses with the help of Walker Hydraulics here in Wilmington Nc and they didn't have any problems getting the correct fittings to fit the original fittings on the cylinders. The hoses are normal 1/4" lines and on the new joystick spool all the fittings were reduced down to number 5 jic fittings. I am going to make a video of the completed project and post it soon because as much changes that I made it would be much easier to film it. All the mods I did run around $2500.00 and that's a crazy amount but it's like I want it now.

I had this problem straight out of the crate. I do have a hydraulic background and I would never swapped high pressure and return hoses. My problem was just some trash on the pressure regulator valve. I see a lot of people running these things wide open throttle. Half throttle works good for me and I have lifted 9 foot crosstie at full extension easily. and digging wet clay by the bucketfull at full extension. Besides half throttle saves on fuel. I can work continuously for 4+ hours at half throttle.

This is potentially a pretty dangerous hack. When the flow is reversed through the directional control valve the pressure relief valve is completely defeated. That means there is no safety relief for the output of the pump and pressure can build to the point where it either stalls the engine (not too serious) or breaks something in the hydraulic system, potentially causing physical injury. This pressure build up will happen very quickly, in much less then 10 seconds, once the hydraulic cylinder that is being moved gets to a deadhead position. If anyone is going to do this, only have the engine at an idle so it stalls easily.

I have had mine for over 20 years. It is a good machine, when it is working. When I first assembled it,I crab walked to my back yard and started to dig with it. It quit on my first try. I called harbor freight and they said it needed a control valve. I kept in touch with them, for over a year, wanting to o know where my part was. They kept telling me it was on back order. Then one day I called and told them I had been waiting over a year. Then the guy said the part on order was only $4.50.I said no way this part cost that much. They had ordered the decal for the operation of the controls. The guy said he had a control manifold in stock, and sent it and that solved the problem, but I lost a year of use. The machine has been with it's problems, all hydraulic. It has paid for itself, and mechanically,I have had no problems. The hydraulic system is the weak link. I drained a gallon of water out of the oil tank and I keep it covered. Don't know how it gets in.I have no leaks just changed oil twice to get the water out. Disconnected the cylinders, and moved the piston by hand and they were full of water.i replaced 2 boom cylinders and the control valve and still can't get it to raise. The pump shoots oil over 15 feet. The controls work, just no power. The machine isn't wore out because I have had so much down time with it. I would buy it again, even with all it's problems,it will dig when it is working.

@@HoodHandyman Should union the pressure and return together and bump the pump. The reason I say not to do this is because some return components are not capable of withstanding pressure, even for one second and damage or injury could occur. 16yr hydraulic tech here.

It is ok to do that but safety precautions should be taken in case the line has a check valve in it. If the line explodes it could send out fluid that could injure someone. Another option would be to disconnect the spark plug to the engine so it won't start and hand crank the engine a few times while the lines are reversed to see if that will clear the obstruction. Won't build up such a dangerous psi that way.

Sounds like trash plugged something. You can always blow compressed air in the main feed line and the air will sit on top of tank and push fluid out. Hurry up and hook up your lines.

Yep ,,im on this same ship as everyone else .6 mos. No pressure .changed pump not from harbour freight .taken relief valve out examined adjusted while running nothing .Im going to change monoblock valve out for a higher quality control now ,,,upgrades,,,, but I only paid 2499.00 for my trencher brand new from harbour freight ,,,so the added expense's not too bad .And dealing with Harbour Freight about this matter ,,My advice dont waste your time unless you like to wait on hold for long periods of time.
