- “Sittin’ On A Fence” by The Rolling Stones
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Lyrics:
Since I was young I've been very hard to please
And I don't know wrong from right
But there is one thing I could never understand
Some of the sick things that a girl does to a man, so
I'm just sittin' on a fence
You can say I got no sense
Trying to make up my mind
Really is too horrifying
So I'm sittin’ on a fence
All of my friends at school grew up and settled down
And they mortgaged up their lives
One things not said too much, but I think it's true
They just get married 'cause there's nothing else to do, so
I'm just sittin' on a fence
You can say I got no sense
Trying to make up my mind
Really is too horrifying
So I'm sittin on a fence
I'm just sittin' on a fence
You can say I got no sense
Trying to make up my mind
Really is too horrifying
So I'm sittin’ on a fence
The day can come when you get old and sick and tired of life
You just never realize
Maybe the choice you made wasn't really right
But you go out and you don't come back at night, so
I'm just sittin' on a fence
You can say I got no sense
Trying to make up my mind
Really is too horrifying
So I'm sittin’ on a fence

The best part of the quarantine have been rolling stones songs❤️
People still doing this?
...and hi
Me too!
So True
I love The Rolling Stones’ early songs, especially ones like this that are from deep in the archives. But for anyone who digs in, they are treasures!
Early Stones criminally underrated. The best then and now.
You're right
I agree. They were best with Brian, then Mick Taylor years and after that it wasn't the same.
Late The Rolling Stones Albums is also criminally underrated!!!
Brian Jones! Man was great!
@@747heavyboeing3 Not the same but cool again!
Those last few notes Brian plays just break my heart, what an excellent musician he was
True. He was one of a kind, prolifically talented and deeply damaged. He needed someone in his life who REALLY cared about him and could have helped him manage all his self-destructive behaviors.
💔💔💔💔💔
@@mackb909 Deeply damaged? you knew him? no you read stuff , many really liked him, ever hear of mary hallet?

“The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. It is human connection.”

To play the last notes you need two others guy who wrote the song.
R.I.P. Charlie ! - you played that beat for us for so many years on so many songs !
Beautiful and Wonderful Song from the Brian Jones Times! The Best Stones Forever and Ever! Fron Here to the Eternity!
A magical album with this precious gem on it , more hot rocks and flowers was a highly creative period of the rolling stones Brian Jones shines on this album
Rip Brian and Charlie watts
Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - backing vocals, lead acoustic guitar
Brian Jones - acoustic rhythm guitar
Bill Wyman - bass
Charlie Watts - tambourine[
Additional musician
Jack Nitzsche - harpsichord
Brian play so many instruments he has so many cool touches to so many songs so sad the way he ended up he could have went on and made another band rest in peace Brian
Lady Jane when he plays that Appalachian dulcimer it gives me goosebumps still to this day thank you Brian
Must hear Keith on this and every other songs
Beautiful. Brian's wonderful guitar playing.
"I'm still sittin' on a fence. You can say I got no sense. Trying to make up my mind really is too hard a find. So I'm sittin' on a fence."
The songs you love most passionately are the ones that express your life experience. The above 4 lines have been my existence ever since I can remember. This song is so beautifully poignant in the depiction of how life can be so overwhelming that you choose paralysis because you just don't know which path to take. The sad thing is that sometimes indecision is better than the tragic or mundane choices one makes out of apathy, fear, or confusion.
It's criminal that this song didn't make it onto Aftermath. They could have trimmed a few minutes off of Goin' Home and added this gem.
I like this Jagger period lyrics too.
@@Methilde Yeah I always loved Jagger way better when he was introspective and vulnerable instead of misogynistic and hedonistic. Little bit of misogyny in this song but it's tolerable compared to some of his other songs 😊
I have always felt they thought it was a throwaway
The best reflection about this lyrics.
Love your oh so true comment, so beautifully expressed!❤ Life is made of a myriad of choices and sittin' on a fence may just be a good choice sometimes...
Love the little flub and quick recovery (by Brian?) at 2:52
Eddy Vanderhellen A little imperfection goes along way.
STIIIIL SOUNDS GOOD ALL THESE YEARS LATER !!!
Isn't this one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Yeah it is
Greats nostalgics lyrics, by such a young guy.
I love this era of the Stones the best. They're past the Chicago blues worship, writing their own songs, and haven't yet got locked into the riff-rock of the post-Satanic Majesty's era that has endured since. I just love this kind of nasty folk they did, Child of the Moon, Ruby Tuesday, lasted all of a year or two.
Brian Jones' enormous contributions to the Stones sound can't be overstated
Beautiful music with the brilliant founder and leader Brian Jones!!!
The Stones with Brian, nothing compares
Still the world's greatest rock and roll band...they were then, they are today, they always will be. Recorded late '65 in LA during the "Aftermath" sessions: Mick Jagger, lead vocal; Brian Jones, acoustic guitar (right speaker) and harpsichord; Keith Richards, acoustic guitar (left speaker) and harmony/backing vocals; Bill Wyman, bass; Charlie Watts, tambourine.
And Jagger/Richard writers.

Beatles were, are and always will be THE greatest group of all time ! Stones are 2nd, and it's not a failure to be 2nd to Beatles
@@ITILII Fine. Never speak blasphemy before the acolytes of The Fabs.

Mick's 79 now, boy am I going to miss him when he goes...I love this song and Backstreet Girl; esp. sung by Bobby Darin....thank you...all.
Little gem !
Wonderful ballad 🙅-Marriage, acoustic, packed with pretty 🎼🎶🎶 with 🎸, unsurpassed harmonies &
a chorus ultra-super-memorable
that 🔒 a new absolute highlight.
The common people always think of the Stones as a loud and nasty Rock'n Roll band.
Jesus...they created such wonderful and romantic tunes in the late 60s/early 70s!!!
"The common people" ! LOL.
@@axiomist4488 sorry for my lousy english...but I guess that you know, what I mean...😊
@@dirkfeische2945 When they created delicate, baroque and beautiful melodies they were as good and brilliant as anybody.
You've got that right.
Loud and Nasty listen to the Brian Jones era
One of my favorite Stones' songs.
ALWAYS WAS A FAN OF THE STONES SINCE THE EARLY SIXTIES AND STILL TRUE TO THIS DAY....🎶...🙄
No Jones=NO STONES !!!
Brian Jones made the stones' roll. RIP legend
Yes, I agree, a very talented musician, a bit of a temper on him I hear.
Wasn't to stable in the end.

I'm not on the fence ... the Stones are the world's greatest rock and roll band.
Amen.
fiendbastards I don’t like that album
@Rolling Stones Records, Promos and Bootlegs Will check it out, thanks.
@fiendbastards Sure thing. And Sid Vicious was the greatest rock bassist of all time. Hell, greatest bassist period- eat your heart out Ron Carter, Charlie Mingus, Jimmy Garrison, and all the jazz bass superstars. Oh, and heroin is better for you than eating lots of fruits and vegetables. And Donald Trump is the greatest person who ever lived, and never tells a lie. By the way, I can sell you a bridge in Brooklyn, cheap, just give me $20 million.
It's definitely between them and the Beatles
The vocalist, the singer and his voice is also underrated by criticals. The Rolling Stones is the best group ever!
Weak link in the Stones.
BEATLES.....Stones a distant 2nd
This has always been a favorite...and I mean always!
one of my favorites, love the guitars
There will never be such a Great band like the Rolling Stones again. God bless them. Live forever.
From 1964 when the British dominated the airwaves and people bought British recordings, only Paul Mcartney, Peter Noone, the Zombies, and the membes of the Moody Blues. In Amerian, David Crosby (The Byrds and CSN) still tours and consistenly puts out great music.
A lot of truth in this song. Love the line they just get married because there is nothing else to do.
Jagger was only 22 years old when he wrote it !!!!!!!!!!
The history of my life, great song
I've been waiting for that 'lyric video' since a long time - sittin' on a fence ... wunderbar!
Bella , bella questa canzone , anche nel tempo non perde lo smalto .
Nunca existió ni existirá una banda como Rolling Stones sin dudas la mejor del mundo por los siglos
Although I don't know English very well, The Rolling Stones ' songs touch me to the core
And you miss a lot without understanding the lyrics, there are many traductions websites.
Pure class from early stones
And I think to myself, how can I live whihout Rolling Stones songs? All my life I was hearing them!
For old timers like myself. We're lucky that we were around from the very beginning of R&R, British Invasion, Psychedelic, Garage,
Progressive, and on and on.What a time for music. Don't think it'll ever be matched. To all the bands and performers THANKS FOR IT ALL.
POVERTY WAS FUN FOR THOSE MUSICIANS?
Hear Hear! it's up to us to make sure The Rolling Stones' legacy as a band and song writers are passed on to our kids and their kids', kids'! Thank you Mick, Keef, Brian, Charlie, Bill, Ronnie and now Steve for all the greatest music we will ever hear.
so, if I am here after 19min of this being posted, I am here early, right?
yeah, I was late again. congratulations!
the guitar work is so good in this song ,Words of wisdom thinks Mick
Love these old Stones records.
If this song doesn't show the brilliant genius of Mick and Keef's song writing nothing does. They are among the greatest song writers of all time and while I can never say "the best" in there are other artists who are on the list they are damn close to being my pick though I never can!
I'm 33, a RS fan since I was a teenager, I'm single, with a good job and I've been enjoying my life. It's 2:30 am, I'm drunk and this song describes exactly what is in my head. All my friends are married or engaged whilst I date a 23 years old girl. Sounds good but rigth now I'm wondering if I took the best choices in my life, I'm just sitting on a fence. This song is just another reason to love the Stones.
Believe me at 33 life is still ahead of you bro.I got married, had children, got divorced, got married again and played local football for 11 years all AFTER the age of 33.No need for TOO much reflection just yet✌️
A song forgotten by the band until it appeared in "Flowers". The funny thing is that Brian missed a note at 2:52 and they did not correct it.
No reason to fix it. That's what made the Stone so fucking great.
Paul McCartney, of that OTHER band, said a few months ago that The Stones were just a blues cover band, and that HIS former band offered music evocative of a broader pallet of musical genres and cultures. His late mate, John Lennon, never tired of saying that The Stones simply aped what The Fabs had done six months earlier. This is The Stones in their chamber pop/baroque pop mode (which includes songs like "As Tears Go By" and "Backstreet Girl" among many others), which characterized much of their deep-track work in the late-'64 to mid-'66 period, even as they continued to put out a steady stream of blues-based hard rock numbers and before they moved into their brief psychedelic phase (approximately fall '66 to late '67). Can any Beatles fans tell me which Beatles songs or modes, exactly, "Sittin' On a Fence" copies? I never want to disrespect The Fabs (though The Stones will always be my favorite band, sorry, Beatlemaniacs), but I for one am sick and tired of them being put down as pale imitators of The Fabs.
they zoomed ahead of the fab four before THE CITADEL....AND 2000 LIGHT YEARS FROM HOME after that it was curtains for the FLAB BORE.....AND PAUL KNEW IT..watch the early stones on the Tami Show.......incredibley unbeatlesque.........they danced!!!!
Since I was young I've been obsessed with Roling Stones
Am I the only one?
Cause there is one thing I could never understand
How can my friends listen to modern crap today?
I just listen to the Stones all day...
All of my friends at school could not agree with me
Said that's not the thing for me
One thing's not said too much, but i think it's true
No one can see it with an exception for us two
Really great songwriting
What a wonderful and beautiful song ❤️
This song is so underrated!
The interplay of Keith and Brian's acoustic guitars is simply magic. Brian plays the repeating "lead" pattern while Keith strums an ever-changing pattern of "rhythm" chords behind it. I don't think Brian is using a strictly standard tuning there; if anyone knows the variations Brian uses in the tuning please LMK.
I’ve seen at least one video on UA-cam that breaks down the playing.
both of them are tuned down a half step
great song
Como amo esta canción por favor🎸🎸🎸🥰🥰🎶🎶🎶🎶 hermosa creación!
"The day can come, when you get old and sick and tired of life."

Great song. 😍😍

Magic....!!
Brian Jones was so darn good. Play anything with strings stretched over it.
I love this song❤️
A very underrated song.
Happy 77 Birthdays Mick Jagger.... We Love Youuu
Great tune and Proof that although rare, Brian had the ability to play standard non slide lead guitar. He does a fine job here. That mistake at the end just makes it even better. It’s an exclamation point to his rare lead guitar!
He makes another just before the beginning of the last chorus. I never heard it until just now (he hits a muted string both times).
@@axiomist4488 Just more subtle proof that this is Brian on lead guitar and not Keith as other sources have listed. Brian was the melodic one. If Keith made these mistakes I’m sure he would have done more takes until he got it right.
@@ovalvox7888 I'm willing to bet at least one testicle its Keith on both guitars.
@@bcsemotorworks2462 It’s always possible. No definitive proof. Brian was still playing the guitar then before he completely abandoned it. It is repetitive which was always Brian’s style.
Why do you think Brian played lead on this song? Everything I've read credits Keith with lead here.
beautifully cut, FLOWERS.........
The Stones were so much better for Brian Jones! Not sure about him as a human, but his sense of melody is sorely missed from the later years :)
@ Sam Harrison I really agree with you on that. These beautiful, melodious songs are something that has really been missing from the Stones' output. Brian really made the difference when he was alive.
Little Steven of "Little Steven's Underground Garage" says that their albums have never been as great as they were when they were competing with the Beatles.
When they had that competition, and Brian, they made some great music.
@@chrisfreeman4457 yes and it was him who played harpsichord on that one and other instruments on many songs beside being guitarist...
Oh really? But as far as I know, Brian Jones never composed any of the songs the band recorded. So how can it be possible that the band played "beautiful, melodious songs" unless Brian Jones ordered Jagger/Richards to write songs in that style? Doesn't make sense, does it?
@@Vinterfrid He didn't get writing credits for the songs, but his parts on the songs he wrote. This was the impression I got reading about the parts he contributed and the difference between the band pre and post brian :) all objective though I guess
@@chrisfreeman4457 All melodies and lyrics by Jagger.......... and compositions by Richard, it's a fact.
