Lots of you left comments on my last video saying there was an even easier way to remove redundant supports on helmets and you've made my life so much easier, so I wanted to return the favor with a tutorial!
I'd recommend this method for beginners especially because it doesn't really require you to know where supports need to be placed, we'll just be removing the ones we DON'T want in this tutorial.

Hey, for rotating the helmet in the beginning you can use the "select face to align to the build plate" tool under the rotation tab in Cura, which makes it basically perfectly flat on the bed if you click on the face you want to put on the build plate, I also regularly turn off the "Uniform Scaling " under the size tab to only have to use one support blocker for irregular shapes, like the top of the helmet you had to use 4 for. Hope this helps you out!

I can't believe I could have saved almost 700 grams of filament just with the dome supports gone LOL!!! Like you said, there is sooo much to learn in this hobby. And just as a side note, as a 40's male I found your video unbelievably clear and easy to follow, and you being "a woman" actually made it easier for me to understand. I've been printing for about 3 years now using so many rolls on supports alone. idk why i never even thought about the "dome" shape being self-supporting.....smh. Appreciate the video....P.S. the previous vid to this one is the way i found your channel and its helped immensley. Thank you!!!!!
thank you for making this video! I've been wanting to print a Mando helmet, but the print time was like 5 days, which is intimidating and feels like I'm just setting myself up for failure. Now I'm gonna try support blockers and see if I can get a good print going much faster!! Also your print speed of 120mm is crazy to me! I've been printing at only 50mms ever since I started 3d printing. haha
You’re welcome!! And actually I’ve bumped my print speed down to 80mm/s nowadays. It works but does have some diminishing returns
This is great. My last helmet had that nightmare blob of support in the middle, and it was a pain to remove as well.

Great job. I do one block in the center and then size it without uniform scaling. I make it wide and short (like me). Another thing that I do is set my support overhang angle to 65 with general tree supports (mostly) and put in custom supports on things like the visor.
BTW, have you tried Arc Welder, yet?
LOL wide and short that made me snort ... I played with making them odd shapes but just found it quicker to just make those boxes, same reason I I just kept the overhang where it was so I didn't have to add in custom supports on the visor I was also a bit frustrated with my PC continually crashing while I tried to slice this (it def needs replaced soon lol)

perfect tutorial. i used your advice and discovered that is you unclick uniform scaling, you can drag the support blocker in one axis only instead of all three

I quite like the 'snap rotation' for most alignment changes but holding down the shift key (on a Mac, not sure what key on pc) while rotating will temporarily disable snap rotation to give me a little more precise control.
Oh that’s a good tip! I often forget I’ve turned it on or off so this would help out a lot
You may already know this but for those that don't. On models such as the helmet, the bottom may not be perfectly even and lay flat on the bed (like the helmet). On some models you may not need (or want) to keep the exact shape of the bottom of the model. In Cura you can lower the model down into the build plate until all edges are flat on the bed, then Cura will slice it ignoring any part of the model that goes into the bed. That way you won't need supports around the bottom of the model.
Yeah, I've done this before! I did it on a previous Bo Katan helmet actually

And I'll have to try out the cylinder tool next time I print, to be honest my computer kept crashing everytime I went to slice this (it's like 6 years old) so by the time I got it filmed I was over trying new things

when you're cleaning up, what is your technique as not not scrape up the helmet to bad? are you changing the support interface at all so that the supports come off easier?

thank you! yeah, I think it's why I have a lot of imposter syndrome surrounding 3D printing, I'm constantly learning and tweaking things and it feels like the learning never ends ... but that's part of the fun of it too I guess! as for the CR10s's after all these years welp, it's because they're what I know. They've been working fine for the past few years and I don't see myself upgrading for a while (unless they both die off early). I'm also a fan of the older models because there's less computer stuff that can go wrong on them, sure I gotta manually level the beds but I actually don't mind that.
Current cura rotation tool lets you select an object face to align to the print bed... I think it's the 3rd rotation option.Check it out. A real time-saver.

@@vaultfox Fair enough. The other trick, I dunno if you mentioned it, is, in Cura.. hold down shift for fine control of rotation.
So I’m trying to fit a mandalorian olhelmet on a ender 3 pro scale and I have it to the right scale and it won’t let me slice
Depending on the scale, it might be too large to fit on your particular bedsize. I have a Creality CR10s with a 300x300x400 working area
How have you removed the image of your printer in cura? Frustrates me when looking at my print from underneath having to look through the image of the printer. Good to see you updated with this video - I was watching the original one and was wondering why you weren't using support blockers. Also you showed me different custom supports to the ones I was using so interested to try yours. The ones I've been using are the Cylindric Custom Support.
I never did anything to remove the printer image from the bottom so I can’t really help you there sadly
How did you get the support button on the left side at the bottom? I have looked everywhere in the market place and I can’t find it. I have not 5.2 and 5.3 version of Cura
I can't remember what version of CURA this was when I filmed it, but it is an older version. The support button was an add-on from their storefront but I believe (according to other commentors) that it is no longer available
Loving these videos! New to 3D printing my cosplay materials and wanting to gauge a good choice for printers that can one shot a helmet. Would you recommend a Creality CR 10 for beginners? Keep up the awesome videos!
thank you so much, glad they help! I would personally recommend the CR10s actually, it has a few more features than the CR10 did (like power recovery if your power goes out, you can usually get the print to restart when it comes back and a filament run-out sensor) One thing I didn't know until I got it is that leveling it is a PAIN since the bed is larger, an Ender 3 or smaller would usually be a starting point but I skipped that and just went right to the big guns lol. As long as you're willing to maintain and tinker a bit, I think it's a fine beginner machine
@@vaultfox thank you! I’m actually trying to look now on where around me Carrie’s CR10s. One question I had is the CR10s also referred to as the CR 10 Smart 3D printer or CR10 V3 3D printer? My local Microcenter has them listed as that and I’m confused on which is who.
I recommend using a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) for your 3D printers. I use 1 per 3 printers. I have my settings turning off the heating bed after 10 layers to save on power and to save on battery in the event of a power failure. The more power the UPS can hold, the better. A UPS can save you money and prints in the long run. Specially if you are printing 2/3 day prints!
NOTE: Depending on your UPS, you might not be able to heat up the bed of all 3 printers at the same time. You can do 2 beds (no nozzles). Then, when the 2 beds are hot you can start heating up the 3rd bed along with the 3 nozzles. That is how I do it. Its a minor inconvenience, but it has saved my 4/6 day prints! plus it also saves my printers from getting damaged.
That’s interesting! I’ve never even thought of using a UPS for printing cause I’m all honesty, now that I’m mostly printing for myself and not doing commissions they aren’t on constantly. But this might help if I ever decide to dive back in
I can’t get the top of the dome to Connect it’s always printing with small layer imperfections (like lines not completely touching each other) I’ve been fiddling with settings for 2 weeks with no luck.

I have seen another youtuber print helmets like this that don't have a lot of detail upside down and it uses a lot less support, just needs a bit of sanding on top when finished
I've done that in the past and it def works, I just prefer this method
Hello Miss VaultFox! ty for sharing this vid and info. I managed to print a mando helmet for my daughter since that is what she wants, but customized for her. I managed to print it in 1 shot via Cura with the custom supports without the middle part. It came out perfect on my CR10S - Pro V2 i just got. took 58 hours and 559g! not to bad. My issue are the supports!! they are on their like glue, almost fused and hard to break off. the supports are super rigid and really attached. Hard to break off. What support setting do you recommend to make it easier for the supports to come off? In simplify3D those supports always break easily off, but this time i tried it in cura. thank you!!!
you're welcome! and I would check what your settings on the supports are like if you're using CURA as your slicer. I have been printing for over a year now and that helmet is the only one I can’t get right. The “nose” part is killing me. Gonna try your settings
If it makes you feel better I have had my fair share of failures on that print in the exact place you're talking about! It's always my stressor for that print, I don't really breathe a sigh of relief (if there ever is with 3D printing) until that nose prints out OK
Will this still work if you have to cut the helmet in half? (small print bed problems)

It's one of those things that I've kinda silently dealt with all my life, being a part of the more "manly" groups (I played tuba/baritone in HS/college, marched baritone in drum corps so got used to being the only gal a lot of the time) We should just be happy people want to explore and engage in our hobbies!

Hey, I'm wanting to get into 3d printing for cosplay purposes. What computer specs would I need to be able to print off cosplay armour pieces? I.e starwars helmets, breast plates etc
could this be printed on an ender 3 pro? or should i go with the Ender 3 Max? im new to the printing world and looking to get my first printer. looking to print mainly mando armor and other various cosplay stuff. any info you can give is GREATLY appreciated
it COULD be possible but you would need to adjust your adhesion settings and things, and if you need to scale it up any more than I did (it was 100% for me) you might have a little trouble. but I've seen helmets be printed on Ender 3's in one piece, you'll just have to do a bit of extra work
Fairly new to 3D printing here but what would happen if you decided to simply print the helmet upside down?
That works as well but when I did that the supports are on the outside and it just requires a bit more cleanup
I’m always so nervous to not put any supports under the dome xD I know that galactic armory does like the cross underneath the dome. But from what I’ve seen none is actually needed and it comes out okay? There’s no issues with any sagging or warping?
I have yet to have an issue on the helmet's I've printed with sagging/warping (I've printed mostly mando helmets and one clone) The inside of the dome will be a bit messy but that's not a huge issue since no one will ever see it
Right, makes sense. I’m in the middle of printing a clone officer helmet and I may have been too cautious but I ended up splitting it into 6 pieces xD The support structures in the nose/mouth areas were kinda scary and looked like they weren’t printing on anything. I’m still so new so that little but of red in Cura has me paranoid xD

My printers are in our basement and are monitored through a camera, so I've had them run all night. I don't really have a recommendation other than leaving them to go consistently. It's personal preference (and I had only ran prints during the day for around a year before I was confident enough to leave them on overnight)

I've been there lol ... usually adjusting the air gap on your supports will allow them to remove a bit easier. I have another video on how I set-up and remove my supports on the channel as well
Hiya, I've gotta ask... I printed a full size helmet in one go on my CR10s V2. It completed the print and I did it without supports but on the inside of the dome it's a bit loose/non melted filament kinda thing. Do you have any tips how I can stop this? I have since calibrated my printer better. I'm thinking print slower but I was hoping for some advice or tips on settings etc before I do... I also printed one on my resin printer in pieces but that hasn't worked out either as the pieces sizes dont quite match up. Annoying!! I just dont want to waste anyone time failing lol Hope you can help cos yours looks great!
If the filament is non-melted on the inside, I would probably just take a heat gun to re-melt it back into place (on a lowish setting and going up from there just to be safe and not melt the outside). You could slow down the print speed too. The insides of my helmets printed without the middle support are usually a bit like what you described but it's never been bad enough to the point where the structural integrity is compromised.
Can you use this for an animated phase 2 clone?
in theory, yes. you'll just want to make sure that the cheeks/any overhangs around the outside of the helmet are supported (which they should be if you just block out the middle support and generate auto supports)

It’s telling CURA to not generate supports where the blocks are placed. Most domed helmets won’t need those center supports that CURA auto generates.

now you know for next time! trust me I've printed many a helmet with those supports in the middle in the past
@@vaultfox it wasn’t so much the inside supports, but more of the orientation to get the nose point completely supported
So how does this actually work? And does it work with any helmet?
Most helmets (and I say most because there are always exceptions) won't need any middle supports because as the dome builds up, it's self supporting itself. Blocking out that middle support saves time and filament, while still allowing the slicer to generate supports where it's needed (like in the cheeks of a clone helmet or the visor of this Bo Katan helmet)
@@vaultfox because I'm printing a scout trooper helmet at the moment, and the top is more of a dome that builds up annd ends up going flat, so im not sure if that will work or not.
Have you tried printing things upside down? I have zero experience with this I just wonder if it might be faster.
I have before and while it is faster (not faster than this way) you have a lot of supports on the outside you have to clean off. The last time I did it the supports were fused to the outside and required a lot of sanding to remove

I've actually noticed that the Support Blocker seems to freak out a lot and ignore itself in some parts, depending on the model. Basically what I'm saying is, always check your layers!

I only have an ender 3, and I hope I can try to print a helmet with it, In ONE PIECE that is TwT
@@vaultfox So uhhhh My helmet will be done for tomorrow, but...it has a weird cut on the back of the helmet to the ear side, idk why though.
