You clearly don't understand how repels work. They make you avoid encounters assuming that your Pokémon is a higher level than the wild ones.Your Articuno was only level 52 so you still encountered all the level 55s. This isn't something old either. It's in every game in the series.
Haha thanks for the heads up! I'll make an annotation stating that! I guess I never knew that because I'm always levelled up by the end of the game, and honestly never use repels, with this being an exception because I rushed to get footage for the review! I can admit when I'm wrong, and it's actually pretty cool that I can still learn new things about a franchise I've been playing for 15 years. I hope everything else was said pretty well though! Thanks for watching and thanks even more for pointing out the flaw in my argument. Lesson learned! :D
No, they aren't. What about random bullshit, like the guy in the Pokemart REFUSING TO DO HIS FUCKING JOB, until you go on a fetch quest to give Oak a Pokeball, or that Point A --> B --> A --> B padding known as Lavender Town, & Celadon City, OR the Flash HM, which is vital unless you know the way through Rock Tunnel, being hidden behind Diglett's Cave, OR being required to buy the Fresh Water to enter Saffron City, OR the way to get free Pokeballs, which you have to meet all 3 requirements, 1. You must beat the optional rival battle against Blue, 2. You must have 1 Pokemon in your Pokedex, 3. You can't have any Pokeballs in your bag. Want good Pokemon games? Play the gen 2 remakes, Heartgold, & Soulsilver. They have the Running Shoes from gen 3, they have the least bullshit version of Kanto from the gen 2 originals, they have infinite bag space, but they have slightly less bullshit in Johto than gen 1 Kanto.
And the fact kanto is way to basic and bareboned. Its to be expected considering its the first game in the series but I can't help but point this flaw out. Especially when the issue wasn't fixed in the remakes.
I'm noticing a lot of comments regarding my ignorant analysis of how repels work so I thought I'd share my response here: I guess I never knew that because I'm always leveled up by the end of the game, and honestly never use repels, with this being an exception because I rushed to get footage for the review! I can admit when I'm wrong, and it's actually pretty cool that I can still learn new things about a franchise I've been playing for 15 years. I hope everything else was said pretty well though! Thanks for watching and thanks even more for pointing out the flaw in my argument. Lesson learned! :D Once again sorry for my mistake! I really hope my own stupid mistake doesn't ruin an otherwise in-depth review! :) Show less
I do agree than the gen one games don't stand up to the test of time, but they were innovative at the time they came out for the system they came out on. The imperfections were improved on and Fire Red/Leaf Green are amazing remasters that every fan should play.
This was a very fair review. As a millennial approaching 30, I have replayed Blue recently and reached many of the same conclusions. The game is nostalgic and has brief moments of magic, but ultimately, its appropriately refereed to as archaic. The original 151 are totally brilliant, but game play wise, one is better off to play later generations. Also, don't be so hard on yourself regarding flaws in your analysis. This is not a peer-reviewed academic journal dude! Keep doing what you do because your good at it!
Matthew Sommerville Amen. Way too many fans are getting triggered in the comments. I used to love gen 1 as kid, but it just doesn't hold up IMO. Times have changed.
the worst part of this is that he actually canonically has Pikachu as his starter in the games, since Yellow version is the only game where you can catch all 3 main starters (explaining his team in later games) in addition to the fact that he has an unevolved Pikachu to this day in the games.
I mean saving between boxes was annoying when done too many times. But hey at least you won't have to worry about not losing data. (ya know until the save battery runs out...)
@Shlomo PilpulStein The way saving works as far as I know for the Gameboy (Gen 1, Red/Blue/Yellow) and Gameboy Colour (Gen 2, Gold/Silver/Crystal) Pokemon Games, is that those ones saved using an internal battery and that battery is what saved everything you did in the games, from story progression, to collected pokemon, to the in-game clock. Usually they are made to last a long time, (20 years max for most batteries if I'm correct) and that if those batteries dry out you can no longer save the game. One could certainly open up the cartridge and replace the battery for a fresh one to save the game once more. However for the Gameboy Advance (Gen 3, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald) Hoenn games, they too still used an internal battery but it was for the in game clock only for time-based events and would need to be replaced if it too dryed out, but the way to save the game I believed was changed to a flash instead of a battery. FireRed and LeafGreen did not use time based events if I recall correctly so they were the only Gameboy pokemon games that did not need a fresh battery.
jesus christ, I love red/blue so fucking much...such a fantastic game. and the fact that I played it when I was incredibly young amplified the experience so much more. having a brilliant game as your nostalgic memory is the bomb
They were good for the time but they don’t hold up imo. The monsters look terrible even compared to Yellow and the games are extremely glitchy and unbalanced. I can’t go back after playing the newer games.
I'm must be crazy as I actually enjoy Red/Blue/Yellowmore than FireRed/LeafGreen, despite having no nostalgia for Gen 1 and my first Pokémon games being Ruby, FireRed, and Pearl
I don't think you're crazy; I think for instance the art direction in gen 1 is much better than in gen 3, the script is awkwardly padded in the remakes, the music sounds worse, etc.
Plus you can fight Mewtwo immediately after beating the Elite 4 in the 90s games whereas in the remakes you need to do some more annoying stuff and then you finally make your way to fight Mewtwo
I played Red/Blue for the first time last year, and I loved them. They're still really good. Sure, they're outdated today but having the mindset that this was a game made in 1995 I was never really bothered by anything. This generation still has my favorite music, region, and pokemon roster. I have to disagree with you when saying the roster of gen 1 is bad. It makes sense since there's graphical limitations and really? Ponyta is just a pony? Gee, nothing else TOTALLY different about it's design or anything. Not like it's on fire or anything. But in that sense, well yeah, every gen has pokemon that are just animals. All of them. Don't see why gen 1 does it worse. I feel like the newer designs are worse because of the higher expectations we have today yet the designs can still become really lazy. When you have something Like Kyurem and then something like Vanilluxe in on generation it just makes the bad ones even worse.
That's a pretty fair assessment! My point I guess wasn't that Gen one has terrible Pokemon. Just trying to shed some light on the fact that every gen has good an bad. Heck, my favourite (gen 2) has the worst selection and diversity of Pokemon in the entire franchise, but also some gems like the dogs, Feraligatr, and Togetic! I'm not here to hate on any gens, I just really needed to level the playing field a bit because of all the Gen 1 nostalgia-blindness. But I really do love all of the games in the main series!!!
RandomTens I agree. Every generation is good in the end. I think recently though there's definitely been tons of people criticizing this gen. So I wouldn't think "Overrated" is the best word for it, despite the amount of people who think it's the only generation that matters. But there's even a good reason behind that, too. Once Yu-Gi-Oh declined in popularity, fans of the past lost interest and only cared for the original series. This is the same thing thing with pokemon. You have a time where pokemon was everywhere, every kid in school was nuts about pokemon, in 1st grade, in 4th, in 6th grade, heck, even in middle school. Every kid had cards, every kid had toys, you could relate to almost everyone in at least one thing; pokemon. And then all of it died down. It's the impact that pokemon had around the world back then compared to what it is now that upsets certain pokemon fans. It wasn't just the games to them like it is for most people today, it was a lifestyle. So it's easy to see why genwunners came to be. That's why I'm not really against them. Amazing pokemon videos btw. It really was a great month(and a half) for your channel! I'm looking forward to what you've got for us next!
TheGreenShyGuy I always love these conversations because you put them in such a logical AND poetic way. That was a really good analysis of genwunners and definitely opened my eyes a bit. I suppose in a way Gen 1 of Pokemon is very similar to Ocarina of time due to the same "peak hype factor" you mentioned regarding Pokemon. Back then OoT was essentially a milestone and the biggest success of the entire franchise at that point and also boasted things that subsequent iterations could not (i.e. revolutionary mechanics, graphical leaps in hardware, etc.). So in the end it seems these "revolutionary" games do get unfair backlash because fans miss more than just the experience, they miss the excitement that enveloped them. That's a lesson I'll try to proceed with as I continue to create, thank you very much for a great discussion!
My heart belongs to Pokémon Blue. The hype was real guys. Got it for Christmas when I was 12! My brother, 1.5 years younger, got Red. I chose Charmander, he chose Squirtle. We eventually got a link cable and the real fun began...
My older brother always chose charmander my younger brother chose bulbasuar and I chose squirtle but over the years I liked charnander better because Gary doesn't have that stupid gyradose on his team just two easy arcanine and executor I learned the hard way when I kept restarting just for fun
Honest question... So please don't take this the wrong way... Why did you bother to effectively tell and explain what you did in the game? That's not a review. Talking about how certain aspects of the game work or don't work for reasons x, y and z... Would be a review.
I like the videos from this channel :) I don't think the games are outdated, they are the same fantastic games I played 26 years ago. I think you perceive them in that way because you play them for the first time as an adult. thanks for sharing!
one of the few problems I have with Gen 1 is Item storage is stingy (only 20 bag unique items and 50 pc unique items) and there's no separate bag slots (for key items for example) either and also held items weren't a thing yet, so you kinda limited with item space
This channel is so underrated it's not even funny. It's undergoing explosive growth now so I'm happy. Great review, Stan. I really should give the Pokemon series a second chance. I hope for the best for you guys and I honestly think your work rivals some of the biggest gaming UA-cam channels. Now about my UA-cam channel, well, I'll need work on that... good work and keep it up.
23:11 oh my gosh this is literally the same exact thing that happened to me his blastoise kept spamming tail whip or withdraw and my charizard finished it off.
The psychic type is broken but beating an alakazam is based on your pokémon's physical attack since its main weakness is its defense. First Paralyze it and when it's health goes down its going to keep using recover. Eventually at some point its gonna stop and if you have a pkmn with a good physical attack and if possible special defense then you should be fine. The whole missed pokeball thing when attempting to catch legendaries is supposed to represent the poke ball breaking open and them escaping. Always paralyze them then drain their health to red. then start chucking ultra balls and the one that doesn't miss should be captured on the first try. The whole team rocket's evil thing is based on just 2 things 1.) Team rocket Members kill various pokemon ( explained by the people in Lavender town and also explained a little more in pokemon origins) 2.) The Game corner is a place where people can spend money and use coins to buy pokemon as prizes such as dratini and porygon, they were taken out of their natural habitat only to be games prizes. This also has to do with the deaths of the pokemon in lavender town. 3.) the Team rocket at silph Co were supposed to steal the master ball. Their are two main theories to this one 1.] find a way to duplicate it to take as many pkmn possible Or 2.] Capture Mew-two Most people believe in the second one. But why only have one powerful pkmn when you can have multiple after you find a way to make more? Repels are only useful if your above the main level of the pokemon in an area. Using them in cerulean cave is almost useless as those pokemom can got up to lv 79 Your a good reviewer but you really did not know alot about this game honestly. The mechanics are something that people who played the newer games cant understand because of the dramatic changes. You have to keep playing the game and know it by heart to really enjoy it.
"why have only one powerful pokemon" Because mewtwo is like, a Weapon of mass destruction? CREATED for that very purpose? Its like asking "why get one nuke when i can have 10 pistols"
For the first 10 years of playing this game I never knew you had to get the Silph scope to advance to the top of the tower in Lavender. I always thought you had to go to Celadon to buy a Pokédoll and advance that way.... So I've been skipping a part of the story for years lmao
I began with Yellow (and what a trainwreck that was, because I was dumb when I was 6 and raised only my starter. Which was a Pikachu you can't evolve. Giovanni was pain.), but vastly prefer Crystal and the other second gen games. RBY are good to set the stage and while they do have pros such as the freedom to explore, the mostly good Pokemon roster, and bringing to us the series I've loved for 19+ years now, I think they're majorly overrated and bland compared with some of the cool locales and characters we get later in the series, tho I do give them the obvious slack for it.
the artworks were the strong points. pokemon always looked huge and impressive that even facing a farfetchd made you wanna catch it. now its either they look weak or strong with the 3d
It took me years before I realised what I think now that I loved the most about the idea that this first generation of Pokémon; the Hero's Journey. Just starting your adventure, gearing up, defeating the enemy and fulfilling your destiny. And that all within the uniqueness of its own franchise. Pokémon has much more similarities to old mythological stories than I saw when I was a kid. But it kept me hooked ever since. Thank you for this excellent review. I've subbed.
Just wondering but I heard that the red version doesn’t allow you to capture a certain amount of Pokémon. And same with blue so does that mean the yellow version allows you to capture both?
I was suprised at how much you praised the music. When I think of iconic Pokémon music, I think of gen 3-5. This may be because I grew up during this time though. Tbh gen 1 is my least favorite soundtrack
Doesn't really matter if it's your least favorite soundtrack. The soundtrack of the first game is usually the most iconic (except for Megaman 2, I guess) especially for Nintendo games.
The complaints don't really make a lot of sense. Game Freak didn't need to spell out that their objective was to steal the Master Ball and capture Mewtwo, the most powerful Pokémon in the world. Why should Giovanni reveal his plot to a 10-year-old outsider? In the first generation Game Freak respected our intelligence enough to realize we could put one plus one = 2 together by ourselves. The first game easily has the best evil team and plot of the entire series. The complaint about the Pokémon designs was also dumb. People hate that ice cream Pokémon because it's based on a fucking ice cream and its design just looks stupid. If you didn't realize, the theme of the first generation of Pokémon was genetics and engineering. In other words: how mankind can affect nature. That's why we have a Pokémon that resembles a Pokéball. Voltorb and Electrode were lab experiments that were made to look like Pokéballs on purpose. Putting 3 heads on a living thing is a trope of genetic mutation. That's why you have a fish with 3 eyes in The Simpsons and a bird with 3 heads in Pokémon. And why are you complaining about Pokémon based on real life animals? That's what most of us find the best designs... How is a Pokémon based on a butterfly a bad thing? Butterfree has an excellent design and just looks pretty. And yeah, there were some bad designs in the first generation, like Mr. Mime and Jinx, but those were the exceptions. Exeggutor is based on Jinmenju, a yokai that looks like an ordinary tree, but has human heads hanging down from its branches. Legends of these tree yōkai (another one that came to Japan from China), tell that the fruit would laugh when it was ripe and fall to the ground. That's where exeggutor's pre-evolution comes in, exeggcute, it's a collection of all these heads that have fallen off (that's also why one of the eggs is damaged). It's a Pokémon with a lot of thought put into. The ice cream Pokémon on the other hand is just a fucking ice cream Pokémon that looks like trash. And as you are already aware by now: you just didn't understand how repels worked (and still work to this day). And is it really so strange that a Pokéball can miss its target? It's your fault if you only brought one ultra ball to capture a legendary Pokémon. And inflicting status ailments on Pokémon to make them easier to catch has been in all Pokémon games. You were not "lucky" to catch a Jigglypuff that could put Pokémon to sleep. There are many Pokémon that can inflict status ailments like sleep, poison or paralysis. I really don't get that complaint as it's in all Pokémon games. The first generation handled legendary Pokémon the best. All other generations failed miserably since then... Fuck those roaming beasts in Johto and all the other games that have roaming legendary Pokémon. And generation two is my favorite gen for the record, they just screwed that part up as they're some of the most annoying Pokémon to catch.
+soulripper31 Team Rocket having anything to do with Mewtwo is not stated at all in the games. Only the anime rewrote them to have created it. In the games, it is implied that Blaine and Mr. Fuji and their team of Scientists created Mewtwo instead. For all we know, Team Rocket might not even know Mewtwo exists in the games. Their plan in taking over Silph Co was to obtain the Master Ball and then eventually mass produce it so they can catch any and every Pokemon they want. The plot in Gen 1 is the simplest out of all the gens - beat all the Gyms and the League and stop Team Rocket from harming Pokémon along the way. The later gens expand on this formula with added twists and further elaboration on motives and character arcs. Do not say the games 'respected our intelligence' when it came to the plot when Team Rocket's true goals were ambiguous and their main gist was to just take over the world and make a profit like any other cartoon villain. Anything involving Mewtwo was a separate plot line altogether. Do not confuse your or other people's headcanons for what is actually implied in the games. And as for Pokémon designs, I think you're nitpicking a bit. Every gen has its fair share of good and bad designs. Everyone makes fun of Vanillite and Trubbish when Gen 5 also has Pokemon with a lot of thought put into them like Volcarona, Hydreigon, Accelgor, Galvantula, and Kyurem to name a few. There are still many Pokémon that continue to be based off animals in every Gen past Gen 1 to this day. If anything, Pokemon in Gen 1 were less organic than Pokemon made in Gens 2 and 3, and appear more scientific or mutated like you said. Gen 1 had a great deal of objects as well, though. Roaming Pokémon are annoying, yes, and the tutorials have only gotten worse with each gen, but really, that's about it. Love for Pokemon designs are subjective as shows on UA-cam like The Dex and sites like Bulbapedia give background on what every single Pokémon may have been based on. And missing your Poké Balls on legendaries may be realistic, but the process requires little skill as it is. It's just RNG at the end of the day. And money in Gen 1 is the scarcest - you cannot rematch any Trainers in the entire game except the Pokémon League, and you'd normally encounter the Legendary Birds before you even reach that. Pay Day on Meowth also gives you next to know money. So being expected to buy enough Balls is all up to luck and restarting your save file over and over until boom. Done. Not having to place a status condition on a legendary is just a convenience at best.
Nate River That's the thing: there isn't one instance of Team Rocket harming Pokemon in the entire game. They're threatening people of power. They're searching caves and abandoned warehouses. They're running scams on people to make money quickly. All of these lead to watching to catch Mewtwo, their successful experiment and the strongest Pokemon "in existence". The people they threaten are the president of Silph Co., who is under ownership of a Poke Ball that can catch a Pokemon without fail, and Mr. Fuji, who is attempting to quell the spirit of the dead Marowak through prayer. The cave they're searching through is Mt. Moon and they're looking for fossil of a Pokemon ("Maybe the Pokemon that could stop Mewtwo has long been extinct.")
gen 1's shake mechanic was based on the catch rate, if you failed it would do a certain shake animation based on the catch percentage of the pokemon you were trying to catch, the pokeball missing is the fail shake mechanic for 0-10% catch rate and it is possible to catch pokemon in this range.
Hitting the nostalgia feels!!!! I remember I was 9 when this came out in Australia and my friend had blue and I got red so we could trade.. I remember reading all the Pokémon related information in the magazines awaiting my birthday when I got the game and was so excited!! I loved working out strategies and ways to beat the game when the odds were started against you!!! Great recap mate! You have one new subscriber ;)
PokéMonth has been awesome and I really enjoyed it! At first, I wasn't really into Pokémon outside of Smash Bros and part of the anime, but with PokéMonth, you've inspired me to explore more of the series and give the games a try.
One thing that truly resonated with me was how you mentioned that the first pokémon game's felt grounded and rooted into our reality and our real science, rather than magic. The 2nd gen had quite a bit of mysticism, but never straight-up magic. Gen 6 is the biggest offender, but I'd honestly argue that it started as early as gen 4. I personally prefer the first few generations because of how grounded they felt despite being fictional worlds populated with impossible creatures.
Always had an issue with people complaining about gen1 and team rocket's story. This was an era where good guys were good and bad guys were bad, character development wasn't really a thing back then, especially on a black and white portable handheld games console. Compared to most games of that era, Pokémon was so heavily far ahead of its competition, it's no wonder it struck gold. The games weren't "broken", they pushed the console as far as it could go and managed to include a few oversights. Compare this game to other games on the console. Pokémon was by far the most ambitious bar none. It's easy to compare a late 90s game to games made 20years later, and sat it doesn't stand the test of time. That's like saying black and white TV shows don't stand the test of time cos their colour palette sucked; it's not wrong, but it's a stupid point made on the technological limitations of the era. Horses suck cos they don't run as fast as cars on the motorway.
The Evolution was the most brilliant part as a kid. U had no internet or shit and u had no idea when they evolve, or in what they evolve, nor how they evolve. That gave me so amazing surprise moments as a kid, just brilliant
Haha I'm with you on the favourite game choice. While I haven't played the new ones (and probably won't), there will always be a very special place for Pokémon gold in my heart. Such a cool story, so many legendaries (with a good story), such creatieve puzzles, so many actually fleshed out characters... And that moment when you beaten all the first 8 gym leaders and go to the elite 4 and then meet the guy who says: you've just set your first steps into kanto, which makes you realise you can do the entire first gen game map in gen 2! That was one of my happiest childhood moments ever, will never forget that!
Something intresting i found about pokeballs missing, a miss just means the pokemon would break out, once it hits it will catch. Try saving before the legendary birds and throw balls at them and see.
Pretty good review for the most part. I could bring up the repel thing, but one look in the comment sections shows that everyone already brought it up. XD Though I don't believe canonically Red started with Charmander and I wouldn't call it unplayable. Just tiring. In all seriousness, I do enjoy Gen 1, but it's not one I go back to that often. I started my Pokemon journey with Gen 2 Pokemon Gold, so while I did have Blue and Yellow as a kid, I didn't play them much until much later. One thing also to mention about Gen 1 though is that it is probably the most open of any Pokemon games since after you beat Misty, you can technically fight most of the Gym Leaders in any order you want if you really feel like it. I won't deny the faults of Gen 1. It is pretty broken and without much story, though I actually enjoy Team Rocket for the implemented cruelty they cause. Not to mention that in comparison to other Gens, it is pretty outdated. Though in my opinion, Yellow doesn't really fix much of the issues since sure Jessie and James are in the game, but it's not like they really do anything unique to make it worth it. It's just "Hey! It's those guys you see in almost every episode of the anime!" As for Fire Red or Leaf Green, yeah it is better, but if you don't like emulating, then you are better off playing RBY on the 3Ds since it will save you a lot of money. Gen 1 is good, but it definitely isn't my favorite Gen
Memory storage was a massive issue for the first Pokémon game. Nintendo was insistent on them using regular cartridges to keep costs down so they had to pull out all the stops to get it in. A big thing they used is data overlap with the same data being used for multiple different things some even happening in quick succession just to get more out of the limited space. That data overlap is what enables both the Mew glitch and the Old man glitch.
Some tips for gen-1 rookies: Every time you finish a dungeon (caves, Rocket HQ's, etc.) go through you bag. Deposit all items you wanna save for later like Rare Candys, TMs, vitamins, etc. Key items like the Sylph Scope, Lift key, etc, serve no purpose but take up space after you've cleared that section. Also, some TMs are so useless, you should just sell'em like Water Gun, Bide, etc. After you have used an HM on one of your pokemon deposit it as well. Note on HMs: Flash is only necessary for Rock Tunnel and Cut becomes less prominent in the late game. Don't waste a moveslot on your main party members for them. Battle all the trainers you meet. That exp will come in handy in the late game when the levels jump into late 50s and 60s. even you fight everyone your team will probably be under-leveled. Try to catch new pokemon you meet, especially in the early game. Prof. Oaks aides will give prizes for specific benchmarks: 10 species gets Flash HM. Also get Itemfinder and Exp.All Finally, gen 1 has a ton of glitches you can exploit, like badge boost glitch, one-hit ko moves always hit after X Accuracy, Crits are based on Speed, and some moves simply don't work as intended. It's a fun rabbit hole to go into.
Hey, good video. It’s been forever since I played Red but it was my first (and only) so it’s pretty important to me. The flaws you talk about I don’t remember but it was also over 20 years ago and I was a snot nosed little kid. :) I’m actually back in a Pokemon phase now. I’m 34 years old and haven’t played a Pokémon since Red but I just bought Ultra Sun and am emulating some of the older ones for fun. It’s kinda neat to come back and see what I’ve been missing out on all these years.
I think you misused the term "genwunner." Genwunners are a problem in the society of the Pokemon fan base, and you sir are fine because you're not ignorant. Real genwunners would never let a game outside gen 1 be their favorite. Their negative opinions of later generations are based on nothing except nostalgia, pure blind ignorance, and logical irrationality (like for example, "the TONGUE Pokemon" isn't stupid to them.) Never call yourself a genwunner ever again please..I'd hate to see a perfectly reasonable youtuber call himself such a terrible thing :(
"Real genwunners would never let a game outside gen 1 be their favorite" That's just not true though, I know plenty of people my age (~30) who have said Pokemon was never as good after Gen II (which is my favorite, but I've also enjoyed later gens thoroughly) - but they ultimately prefer Gen II to Gen I. I understand you have a certain idea of a genwunner in your head, but such people are still genwunners by definition. I do get what you're saying, I'm just arguing semantics...
no, his definition of genwunner is pretty spot-on... he is talking about people who literally hate anything past Generation 1 for no good reason. Whether it be Gen2 or FireRed and LeafGreen. The people you are talking about are just normal pokemon fans with a strong opinion, who don't enjoy the later generations as much as Gen2, but don't hate them either.
"Blind ignorance and logical irrationality" because someone likes one game in a series and none of the others. It's not like oppinions are subjective or anything. Wow they must really be stupid for liking the TONGUE pokemon! What a fucking idiot, that dude liked the TONGUE pokemon? Thats just logical irrationality.
Repels only work if the first pokemon in your party is a higher level that the pokemon you would encounter. Its been a mechanic throughout every generation.
Inventory management is a pretty common thing in RPGs, and it's honestly not that bad in this game. First of all, don't take your HMs with you, you don't need them after you've used them once. Second, take your bike, your best potion and ball, revives, and maybe a rod if you're looking for water pokemon. Shove everything else in the PC and keep doing that every time you hit up a Pokemon center. There's not much else to it, except for various key items that you need for, at most, one segment of the game, and can then be put in the PC along with everything else. You can also use or toss items to open up inventory slots if you don't want to backtrack (or if you're in the Safari Zone).
This video makes a lot of sense and states obvious facts while also bringing back nostalgia for some. I have some probabilities/answers for some of the questions in the "Cons" section. "Why are you worried about an Ice Cream Cone when Gen 1 didn't even put up a fighting chance?" I do agree with this question. However, I think I have the reason for why the Ice Cream is judged more than some of the Gen 1 Pokémon. Since Gen 1 was the first game, most people probably didn't mind the lack of creativity and design that balances out the amazing ones that were brought to the table. Now that the Pokémon are getting more creative, I think people were just expecting more good than bad and seeing ice cream (Vanillite line), garbage (Trubbish line), and keys (Klefki) didn't help.
Continuation: "Why do I need to keep seeing the Abra, Machop, Koffing, and Ghastly lines throughout the game?" I think it's because 3 out of 4 (the missing one being the Koffing line) include Pokémon that need to be traded to evolve at some point. This is secretly promoting the trading feature. Game Freak could've possibly been masterminds and said "Let's show these people that these Pokémon are cool and they should be gotten!" Just because they need to be traded and promoted the idea of 2 games with a parallel story. As for Koffing, Zubat, and Rattata's lines, I think they were just chosen to be annoying and to be on Team Rocket's team. (Or it could also show that Team Rocket isn't creative and that they pick common Pokémon depending on area. 😂) I agree with everything else in the video. That was just some things that popped into my head while watching. 😁
Theres a big misconception about the pokeballs "missing". In reality they dont miss at all, the message only indicates what the catch rate range it is in (10% or lower).
I got Yellow on the eShop and it took me TEN HOURS to beat Brock. I didn't realize that I could easily have gotten a Mankey with Low Kick and then it was a sweep when I caught it.
You are underpowered. Repel works by repelling pokemon below the level of the pokemon in the front of your party. Level 52 will repel level 51 and below.
The only thing that sucks about this game it too fast after catching mewtwo and the elite four it gets 😴 other than using rare 🍬 and master ball tricks
The only thing that sucks about this game it too fast after catching mewtwo and the elite four it gets 😴 other than using rare 🍬 and master ball tricks
I own every game in the series, and have played all to completion (even 100% on games like Yellow, Silver, Leaf Green, and Emerald versions). For me, Gen I will always be the purest Pokemon experience. Obviously they were revolutionary when they came out and helped launch "Pokemania," but nostalgia aside, I actually hadn't played the Gen I games until I was in college a couple years ago (my first Pokemon game was Crystal version). I ended up bringing my GameBoy Color along with a new-battery installed Yellow version, and I was blown away by the game. In my mind, it still holds up remarkably well. It just has so much... character. I loved the music, as you mentioned in this review, but I think the whole art style of the game by Ken Sugimori is something that is sorely missing in later games. I even loved the sprites of almost all the Pokemon. Yellow actually does fix a few of the issues/glitches present in Red & Blue, but even things like the OP Psychic type didn't really bother me- it just added to the game's personality. Newer Pokemon games have tried to be too perfect, balancing everything to an algorithmic perfection. However, I feel in that way it loses a lot of the purity present in Gen I. Overall, I prefer the Gen II games, but Gen I got so much right and I actually prefer these games way over the Gen III remakes. The only real issue I have with these games are the terrible Pokemon storage/PC system along with bag/item management. But that's really a technical limitation, and because of that I ended up using a lot more of the items I had instead of storing them in my bag like I would in later games. I'd give Yellow Version a 9.8/10, and Red/Blue a 9.6/10.
Because his name is Red and Red version has Charizard on the cover; Blue version likewise has Blastoise on the cover. Trainers picking the Pokemon whose color matches their name. Pokemon Origins went with this because it's so obvious.
You guys are thinking too hard about this. Basically, any one of the starters that you pick is canon to the games. The whole charizard/blastoise thing is simply that they were mascots for red and blue for the sake of the color scheme. Same thing with pikachu for yellow, groudon for ruby, kyogre for sapphire, etc..
@@saby7825 Actually, going by Gen 2, Pikachu from Yellow is the actual canon starter. Red on Mt. Silver uses Pikachu as his first pokemon, as well as having all three of the other starters on his team. Yellow is the only version that allows you to get them all within the same game, as well as making your pikachu refuse to evolve which falls over to Red owning such a stupidly high leveled Pikachu.
@@Selet101 they just gave that to red because it made the most sense. It's supposed to be gen1 representation. It doesn't necessarily make yellow the only canon game. Red and blue are core series games so they do count too. I like his teams except for stadium 2, that was a weird team they gave him.
Gen 1s aren't hurt by complaints over the limited inventory space and some odd design decisions made by the developers. Those were seen as flaws way back in the day, and ones that were the direct result of the limited hardware of the original Game Boy which the games had to be designed for.
you can place items on your pc, repels work on pokemon with levels below your first pokemon in party, i know its been 5 years but anyways i hope that helps anyone
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE GEN 1 TEAM? Mine is: Charizard, Blastoise, Dragonite, Exeggutor, Zapdos and Golem. 1. Charizard: flamethrower, slash. 2. Blastoise: icebeam, surf. 3. Dragonite: Powerful. Con: takes ages to legitimately level up and arrives at a low level late in the game. Dratini and Dragonaire are not that powerful. 4. Exeggutor: High defense (a tank), psychic, leech seed, giga drain, toxic. 5. Zapdos: thunderbolt, fly. 6. Golem: really good tank as long as typing is good. rock slide, earthquake, dig, explosion. Reqires trade which is why I almost never use this in a legitimate run without Gameshark to encounter trade evolutions and pokemon that are not available in that version. I don't like using a full team of legendaries, it is predictable and boring. If I'm going to rush the game I'd build up just one pokemon and catch some along the way for HM slaves. Typically if I play at all these days I like to focus on having the ultimate team. I haven't caught all 150 in a while.
This game is the best one I've played as a kid, this and Monster rancher 2. I had the yellow version and a game boy that wasn't mine so I played it like it was the best thing in my life :D ... Now I'd say around 15 years later, maybe even more I still like remembering it. How fucking fast time goes by...
You're way harder on the sluggishness of certain areas than you are with Sinnoh. Sinnoh was way less memorable AND far slower, in every area, in my opinion.
RandomTens This was a really good review. I hope to see a Gen 2 review some day.
Dr. Madd Rude son of a bitch
I came down to the comments to say this very thing I am so happy someone else made this comment thank you so much!!
Its for the first pokemon in ur party
Item management is by far the worst aspect of these games for which are otherwise classics.
yeah
Believe me, its nowhere near as bad as some other old school RPGs like Mother 1.
+Lunatic J True dat, even Earthbound it's still awful
I'm noticing a lot of comments regarding my ignorant analysis of how repels work so I thought I'd share my response here:
I guess I never knew that because I'm always leveled up by the end of the game, and honestly never use repels, with this being an exception because I rushed to get footage for the review!

What did u learn? :p
+RandomTens lol. was about to tell you, man. "This kid has NO IDEA HOW REPELS WORK!". Lmao! Glad you've learned, though
I get how you could make that mistake I did to when I was a kid it doesn't help that they never explain this in game.
+Daniel Jones Haha thank you for reading the comment!

@@InfernalLeo777 You good, my nigga? You having a stroke or something?
the worst part of this is that he actually canonically has Pikachu as his starter in the games, since Yellow version is the only game where you can catch all 3 main starters (explaining his team in later games) in addition to the fact that he has an unevolved Pikachu to this day in the games.
Frosty Mac :0
But Gary has a Blastoise and it makes sense for Red to have Charmander so Blue has Squirtle.
Repels only work if the first pokemon in your party is a higher level that the ones you could encounter. Its a mechanic in every generation.
I use this to to force Dugtrio in diglett's cave using a pokemon between levels 23 and 31
Item storage is annoying, but I always hated that the game saves when you switch boxes -.-
InfernalShadowDragon it is an inconvenience!
Haha totally forgot that. Was a pain in the *** for sure!
I mean saving between boxes was annoying when done too many times.
But hey at least you won't have to worry about not losing data.
(ya know until the save battery runs out...)
super helpful for duplication purposes in gen 2 tho
Genwunner
They were good for the time but they don’t hold up imo. The monsters look terrible even compared to Yellow and the games are extremely glitchy and unbalanced. I can’t go back after playing the newer games.
@@jimmymackinnon8474 meh, its still a fun ride, but then again i've only played the game once
I'm must be crazy as I actually enjoy Red/Blue/Yellowmore than FireRed/LeafGreen, despite having no nostalgia for Gen 1 and my first Pokémon games being Ruby, FireRed, and Pearl
I guess its just the charm of the originals that get you.
Idk, the originals are pretty great and I've replayed them way more then the remakes. Musics good, arts good, it's just good.
I'm definitely a remakes person, the gen 3 mechanics mixed in with the gen 1 elements helped make a good remake, plus they added a post game
RandomTens No problem!
The game may have age, but it's still an memorabilia on how the franchise started. So much nostalgia.

The looks of games can be completely ruined on emulators
@@LaufeySob And they can improved as well. The only difference is the user's knowledge.
one of the few problems I have with Gen 1 is Item storage is stingy (only 20 bag unique items and 50 pc unique items) and there's no separate bag slots (for key items for example) either and also held items weren't a thing yet, so you kinda limited with item space
I’m playing this during quarantine

I started with the first gen and loved it but my fav has always been gold (since i started playing it)
RandomTens: the final battle with blue is difficult if u haven't grinded at least a little
me: lol just use alakazam
4:22 Did he just said thunder type?
The psychic type is broken but beating an alakazam is based on your pokémon's physical attack since its main weakness is its defense. First Paralyze it and when it's health goes down its going to keep using recover. Eventually at some point its gonna stop and if you have a pkmn with a good physical attack and if possible special defense then you should be fine.
The whole missed pokeball thing when attempting to catch legendaries is supposed to represent the poke ball breaking open and them escaping. Always paralyze them then drain their health to red. then start chucking ultra balls and the one that doesn't miss should be captured on the first try.
The whole team rocket's evil thing is based on just 2 things
1.) Team rocket Members kill various pokemon ( explained by the people in Lavender town and also explained a little more in pokemon origins)
2.) The Game corner is a place where people can spend money and use coins to buy pokemon as prizes such as dratini and porygon, they were taken out of their natural habitat only to be games prizes. This also has to do with the deaths of the pokemon in lavender town.
3.) the Team rocket at silph Co were supposed to steal the master ball.
Their are two main theories to this one
1.] find a way to duplicate it to take as many pkmn possible
Or
2.] Capture Mew-two
Most people believe in the second one.
But why only have one powerful pkmn when you can have multiple after you find a way to make more?
Repels are only useful if your above the main level of the pokemon in an area. Using them in cerulean cave is almost useless as those pokemom can got up to lv 79
Your a good reviewer but you really did not know alot about this game honestly.
Wait you can just do that?!
What no way you can use a pokedoll?!?
🤔🙃🤯🤣
Dang never knew this mind blown
I began with Yellow (and what a trainwreck that was, because I was dumb when I was 6 and raised only my starter. Which was a Pikachu you can't evolve. Giovanni was pain.), but vastly prefer Crystal and the other second gen games. RBY are good to set the stage and while they do have pros such as the freedom to explore, the mostly good Pokemon roster, and bringing to us the series I've loved for 19+ years now, I think they're majorly overrated and bland compared with some of the cool locales and characters we get later in the series, tho I do give them the obvious slack for it.
I started with Blue version back in 2002, and Silver is still my all-time favorite. Your nostalgia is not misplaced.
Blue came out in 1998, so in my opinion that’s not a true gen 1 experience!
the artworks were the strong points. pokemon always looked huge and impressive that even facing a farfetchd made you wanna catch it. now its either they look weak or strong with the 3d
Congrats on 10k Subs Stan!!! You Really Deserve this!!!
wow... memories XD
17:57 *Heh* forgot what Golbats sprite looked like.
Just wondering but I heard that the red version doesn’t allow you to capture a certain amount of Pokémon. And same with blue so does that mean the yellow version allows you to capture both?
Red and blue have some differences we're you can't get some and yellow not sure because I despised it wasn't a fan at all Eben with the graffics
Great job this month Stan! And Congrats on your new pc! Can't wait for your next video!
Thanks so much! I just hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed making it! Still can't get over how much we grew in July lol
RandomTens thats true! i loved this whole month! great jobs guys
I still come back to these games at least once or twice a year.
Finally someone with some backround knowledge. You know your shit.
+soulripper31
Team Rocket having anything to do with Mewtwo is not stated at all in the games.
Muk tho
Moon and they're looking for fossil of a Pokemon ("Maybe the Pokemon that could stop Mewtwo has long been extinct.")
soulripper31 I think they want to reverse engineer the Master Ball to Capture all Legendary that they could Find.
gen 1's shake mechanic was based on the catch rate, if you failed it would do a certain shake animation based on the catch percentage of the pokemon you were trying to catch, the pokeball missing is the fail shake mechanic for 0-10% catch rate and it is possible to catch pokemon in this range.
Sooooo, think we'll ever get a digital version of Gen 2? I would love to play through gold again :

At first, I wasn't really into Pokémon outside of Smash Bros and part of the anime, but with PokéMonth, you've inspired me to explore more of the series and give the games a try.
I really hope you enjoy your experience with Gen 6!
And thanks for always being so supportive of us Retro! Always means a ton seeing your comments! :)
I didn’t expect you to be so brutal on gen one Pokemon, thanks for speaking out on that. People think gen one doesn’t have flaws
24:02 the song is 'An unwavering heart' just saw a few people ask
What’s the music from 24:55 onward? I clicked the link but I didn’t find any music
Will gen 4 will get a review as well? I watched all of these and they're really entertaining and fun to watch! Keep it up!
#HoennFTW
It's those guys you see in almost every episode of the anime!"
As for Fire Red or Leaf Green, yeah it is better, but if you don't like emulating, then you are better off playing RBY on the 3Ds since it will save you a lot of money.
17:33 lmao that golbat looks drunk AF
10/10 for its time. Hard to review an old game honestly by today's standards
That’s why you review it with old standards
I lost my mind laughing at Fire Duck. What a majestic creature.
God dangit stan making me want to rip out my copy of fire red and start a new game in the middle of the video
As long as you choose Squirtle!
Blastoise is my favorite mon, but I wanted to try charizard this time! #pesantrace
+superugly18 60% of my games I choose charmander, and I find he is the most rounded fully evolved. He is a good choice as a starter.
PokeMadness1996 Nope. Blastoise is still my favorite
I have a charizard in that run right now
Some tips for gen-1 rookies:
Every time you finish a dungeon (caves, Rocket HQ's, etc.) go through you bag.
Also get Itemfinder and Exp.All
Finally, gen 1 has a ton of glitches you can exploit, like badge boost glitch, one-hit ko moves always hit after X Accuracy, Crits are based on Speed, and some moves simply don't work as intended. It's a fun rabbit hole to go into.
Hey, good video. It’s been forever since I played Red but it was my first (and only) so it’s pretty important to me. The flaws you talk about I don’t remember but it was also over 20 years ago and I was a snot nosed little kid. :)
I’m actually back in a Pokemon phase now.
Their negative opinions of later generations are based on nothing except nostalgia, pure blind ignorance, and logical irrationality (like for example, "the TONGUE Pokemon" isn't stupid to them.)
Never call yourself a genwunner ever again please..I'd hate to see a perfectly reasonable youtuber call himself such a terrible thing :(
"Real genwunners would never let a game outside gen 1 be their favorite"
That's just not true though, I know plenty of people my age (~30) who have said Pokemon was never as good after Gen II (which is my favorite, but I've also enjoyed later gens thoroughly) - but they ultimately prefer Gen II to Gen I.
Yep, he is a newgenner. Someone that protects new gens attacking the 1st one the same way genwunners does, HYPOCRITE
ピカチュウ怒ったな where....did op protect the new gens OR attack gen one, someones pissy
My heart belongs to Gold haha
just wondering, why do you hate gastly? Was it annoying?
Great Review!
Awesome piece of content. Keep up the great work! :))
Repels only work if the first pokemon in your party is a higher level that the pokemon you would encounter. Its been a mechanic throughout every generation.
Huh never thought of myself as a Clefairy ;)
I believe you were a wigglytuff roy. XD
Lol sorry i get confused XD
+Royboy140 Roy is not a wigglytuff.....,HE IS A KOOPALING SWORD FIGHTER THING
lol
Ooo Thats a miss!
What is the Mew thing you used?
26 min of pure enjoyment. This may be one of the only channels that I enjoy every video. Thanks Stan
Wow!
That's one of the nicest comments I've gotten in a while. Thank you so much.
We can't wait to come back better later this month! :)
17:33 WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO GOLBAT!?!? THAT THING IS DISGUSTING!!!
Goliath always looked ugly yellow was worse
I just discovered this channel and you should have WAY more subs
Continuation:
"Why do I need to keep seeing the Abra, Machop, Koffing, and Ghastly lines throughout the game?" I think it's because 3 out of 4 (the missing one being the Koffing line) include Pokémon that need to be traded to evolve at some point. 😁
5:17 "Giovanni chastizes Red and promises not to lose again, as Red obtains the Silph Scope" - assuming he doesn't dig his way out before grabbing it.
Great video. I have never personally played pokemon but I learned a lot in this vid.
Thanks a ton! It's a great series but I do understand it's not for everyone!
Literally how? I was 9 and beat him with a pikachu and butterfree in the first try
You are underpowered. Repel works by repelling pokemon below the level of the pokemon in the front of your party. Level 52 will repel level 51 and below.
I just beat the elite four recently and I really enjoyed the game. I still need to beat Mewtwo, it's the only thing that I have left to do.
This reminds me of River City Ransom on NES. In that game, you can also purchase items.
I'd give Yellow Version a 9.8/10, and Red/Blue a 9.6/10.
i was really baffled when you said you've never used repels until gen 6! no wonder you hated the caves in this game :D
Why do you think Red "cannonically' chooses Charmander?
Because Origins. But in all seriousness if a Pokemon is canon it's most likely Pikachu as you can't decide if you want him or not in Yellow
You got the like from me when you mentioned the design creativity in gen 1 compared to 5 haha
Gen 1s aren't hurt by complaints over the limited inventory space and some odd design decisions made by the developers. Those were seen as flaws way back in the day, and ones that were the direct result of the limited hardware of the original Game Boy which the games had to be designed for.
you can place items on your pc, repels work on pokemon with levels below your first pokemon in party, i know its been 5 years but anyways i hope that helps anyone
mate is there anyway you can do a tutorial on how to get an emulator and game file that actually saves?
I used to do that as a kid, just run with my starter which was often Squirtle.
Charizard, Dragonite, Starmie, Raichu, Mew, Persian
what is the song at the very end???????????
The game is a classic. A 9.5 easy
Luved it wen I was six still do but its definitey around 6,7
9.5? That's your nostalgia talking. Because it has aged like dog shit.
Gen 4 and 2 are my favorite.

The first generation is the best! Got red and blue and a gameboy color one Christmas when I was 7 or 8! Best Christmas ever!!
That intro is so nostalgic i love it
i replayed leaf green like a week ago and it was great to be back into the world of Pokemon
This game is the best one I've played as a kid, this and Monster rancher 2. I had the yellow version and a game boy that wasn't mine so I played it like it was the best thing in my life :D ... Now I'd say around 15 years later, maybe even more I still like remembering it. How fucking fast time goes by...
Repel only works if stronger than wild pokemon and dealing with items means just keep an eye on
You're way harder on the sluggishness of certain areas than you are with Sinnoh. Sinnoh was way less memorable AND far slower, in every area, in my opinion.
Love these reviews. It looks like you and me are around the same age (I'm 24) so I grew up with these games.
