    I would much rather someone use this method than have them show up with a bunch a grey plastic on the table. Paint snobs get caught up in the "which is better" argument, when the vast majority of tabletop game miniatures people have bought are unpoainted and probably never will be. Getting them painted by any means necessary should be the goal.

    Back in the 90S/00S, when I was able to still paint, this is how I did my horde/mass armies. It worked well for Vampire Counts, Orcs and Goblins, and even a small Space Marine chapter. Instead of contrast paints though I used a paint/ink mix.

    One little extra tip from Artis Opus that I haven't seen any of these Slapchop reviews relaying or using, is dabbing your unloaded dry bush in a just moist (not wet) sponge to get just the tiniest touch of moisture on the bristles before loading the grey or white paint, and before wiping off on your towel/chipboard. Drybrushing with a bone dry brush, especially with the chalky pigments usually found in whites, will leave that chalky texture under all your contrast paint efforts. Takes a little getting used to, to get the right amount of moisture, so you're not accidentally overbrushing, but it results in a less gritty drybrush grisaille base.

    As someone who has struggled to get my ork army painted due to lack of motivation and slow painting, this method has been a game changer for me.
    It really has reinvigorated my painting, and I find myself looking forward to sitting down with a cup of tea and painting up my ladz while I watch some youtube.
    I find it really relaxing, just drybrush 3 - 4 models, get your contrast and speed paints and start the 3d colouring book!
    I then do metallics / bone and wash with agrax and add some fleshy glazes to lips and scars and it's done!
    So satisfying and although its not at the level that Ive achieved with the traditional base shade highlight style, it takes a bloody fraction of the time for very acceptable results!
    I just enjoy not having to worry about paint consistency and achieving good tones etc. so much more stress free.
    Slapchop gets the thumbs up from me!

    compared to no paint at all. sure its fine. compared to other more traditional painting styles, or even newer contrast methods i feel like its definitely bottom tier. It's also very sculpt dependant. the more flat areas, the worse slap chop looks imho.
    Ultimately it all comes down to the quality of the drybrushing. The worse your technique at drybrushing, the more grainy and low definition everything looks and I feel like a zenithal via airbrush or even rattlecan is just a better method

    I’m confused how the grey & white dry brush all over is the same as a zenithal. I thought a zenithal was a white spray from the top down, to show the direction the light was coming in from (like the sun at zenith)

    • @jaanikaapa6925
      @jaanikaapa6925 Рік тому

      Zenithal or directed zenithal gives you the light from a source. This is basically underpainting in grey scale and then you tint the colours in. Of course then there's the volumetric underpainting where you use the model's shapesso you enforce their look using the volumetric lighting. And then you tint it more with transparent colours. Naturally you can use any colour for the yunderpainting / volumetric painting.

    This certainly gets models on the table fast. I'm not so sure about 'teaching people how to paint minis' is correct; not in the traditional sense. People with no brush control aren't going to learn brush control with this method.
    Also, pretty sure this whole technique has been around for ages. Painting over zenithal is just glazing. You don't even need speedpaints for it (or contrast)--just thin your paint down to a glaze and give it a few passes and focus on the recesses and you'll get a very good effect (even better than using speedpaints and contrast because you have more control).
    It's also safer to use glazes (in the sense that if you screw up with speedpaint and contrast, it's hard to correct). Glazes are thinned and therefore easier to manage. If you mess up, you can easily paint over it without having to glob on the base color or primer color to fix.
    And if you don't want to make a lot of thinned passes, you can use inks and create washes (even making them into batches so you won't run out and can keep your washes as consistent as the bought stuff whilst saving yourself a ton of money).
    Just some thoughts. Overall, I appreciate what you're trying to do and encouraging people to get painted minis on the table. It's good stuff. Admittedly, I won't be using these methods but certainly no ill will to anyone who does. I just hope they also think about their wallets and experiment with other techniques and tricks that might not be as wasteful or costly. I'm sure as a Yorkshireman you can appreciate that! ;-)

    • @marmadukesandwich
      @marmadukesandwich Рік тому

      I don't know if I agree with you about brush control. Using either regular inks and 'contrast' type inks requires good brush control to get them to go where you want, they have a lot of flow and someone is going to pick that up by using them. And good dry-brushing is its own skill. Conversely I've seen 'regular paint' tutorials where the tutor advocates haphazardly slapping the paint on to get a base coat.

      This weekend I'm going to 'discover' a technique I call _nadiral lowlighting_ . You undercoat in white and then - get this - spray black up from underneath to create shadows. I'm then going to let a bunch of ADHD zoomers think up a ridiculous name for it.

    I don't really know why people are getting their knickers in a knot over slapchop. The worst thing I can say about it is that it's a stupid name.
    I use it in precisely the context it is intended for. It's a way of getting a good quality paint job on a large scale fairly quickly. I would say the results from slapchop are a lot better than basic speed paint for very little additional effort. I think a lot of people whining probably want everything painted like 'Eavy Metal or Angel Giraldez and they probably want to go have a word with some Historical Wargamers - you get more Kudos for the look of the army (i.e. all painted) than the individual miniatures and Slapchop absolutely allows you to achieve that. Another option is to paint using the normal speed paint method and go for a brown wash at the end. You will have armies painted up in next to no time

    I think the name that they invented is degrading. It's a nice technique and works well if you don't have airbrush. I do zenithal undercoat with spray cans and paint over with contrast paints. Can't understand the negativity this technique has gathered from some. It's not much different from using airbrush to do zenithal undercoat followed with main colors.

    I'm just gonna say the issue me and many others have with 'slap-chop' isn't the technique itself, it's with the jackass who invented a cutsey term for the technique and acted like they invented it, and their likewise annoying fanbase. The techniques great, and what I use as a go-to now. It was also a freaking obvious way to paint as soon as contrast paint was released to the market... And depending on who you ask has either been done with other materials since the dawn of the hobby or is a carry over from portrait painting.
    Or, TL;DR - please do try the technique, just stop calling it the stupid, stupid name

    It's hyped up nonsense. It's a method to basically get some paint onto a mini so it doesn't look all gray and boring. But people are treating this like it's the next super method to look awesome. It's not. It's a bare minimum to apply paint.

    • @crowanon3625
      @crowanon3625 Рік тому

      You realise no one's treating it as a method to get awesome looking minis? It's a way of encouraging beginner painters to actually put some paint on their grey plastic armies? There's long been enough outrage about "3 colour minimums" for table top ready. With all the main mini paint companies now producing their own transparent/contrast/speed paints it's a reasonably fast way to get some basic painted models that avoids the One Thicc coat that many beginners have done.
