Wohoo! So happy you guys enjoyed the minis! I'm really surprised how well they took to using contrast paints over a zenithal highlight - not something you often see in the 75mm medium! Lovely work!
Hey squidmar👋👋👋
Some things i adjusted while using slap chop:
start from a grey, not a black
Dry brush with a middle - light grey and then a white
Use a normal brush for your brightest white highlights
Add as many other techniques as you like.
Maybe these adjustments help some people who want to try it. The most important thing is that you have fun with the model
I agree, black primer sucks too much vibrancy out of the final color
Exactly. That's my biggest issue with videos I see of people doing this method; the black initial color means all the shadows are TOO desaturated and one note IMO. You don't get much in the way of interesting shadow colors.
I think that initial first step should involve a bolder color decision like Navy Blue, or Maroon, or whatever contrasts with your expected main colors.
I was surprised on how well the underpainting worked on larger models. Something Murray had noticed was how well it works for metallic paints which has become my preferred way to work with them.
I think you could slap chop your way to making a thunder bear cavalry… maybe.
Video 31 of asking for the Thunderbear cavalry that would use the Thunderwolf cavalry statblock. Still in need of one of Jazza’s punny names
That metal arm looks really really cool!
It is amazing how Jen improved ofer the past projects im painting, not that she painted bad or something but the improvement is really visible in my opinion. Mari is genius as always!
After being painted, these figures look awesome. The style of painting never fails to impress me in the final product.
I like Dana howl's take on this, if you have an airbrush prime black-> zenithal -> wash on the recesses -> white drybrush -> start, or if you don't, prime white -> wash on the recesses -> white drybrush -> start, should give you more vivid colors
I love those!
THe details in these peices certainly helped with the method working out. And I agree a wonderful base for a more detailed work on a mini like those you have used here.
really enjoy the mini painting videos - dont stop!!
It would be nice with an explanation of what "slap chop" actually is.... i had no idea so to me it just seemed like painting
Incredible!
The one bonus of the old army painter speedpaints, if you get some in the wrong spot you can just water it off 😉
Ive found better luck starting with lightest colors first and working up to dark. Most of the time if I make a mistake the darker colors will cover up the lighter.
Dana Howl has amazing videos about this style of painting as well; including using glazing medium with regular acrylics. Also Dana Howl is just generally awesome too. :)
Ooooo so good! I need to try wet blending contrasts and be more selective in my placement. I think working from light to dark might be better because any mistakes can be covered by the darker colour, maybe just a thought.
I love those Sona models, but I am not even close to good enough to paint them like Squidmar's crew. I am so glad to see they look great using a method I can definitely comfortably replicate myself!
great video ! squidmars 75mil figures look Sooo beautiful ! Definitely think slap chop is meant for Getting armies on the table and not Busts on the display shelf but either way these came out good !
Hey yall
Could you guys do a, not so conventional, Alice in wonderland mini series?
I'd love to see you guys takes on these iconic Characters!! Maybe even do something like a book nook or a gaming table of sorts, or maybe just some really cool bases for the minis!!?? I think it's so cool to see how you guys change them up but yet keeping them recognizable. Anyway, just an idea.
Doing this method can be an advantage by filling in the base layer and going on from there. You would'nt normally rush a model or bust that size thou. And you are right it's almost sacrilege doing it to beautiful models.
I agree with what ya'll say about the slap chop it is good on small figures but I tried it on my own 80mm figure. Most of it turned out good except for the face it just didn't work well but I might not have had the correct skin tone for it either.
Wasn’t sure if I like slapchop before but now
The sculpts are amazing, but damn are they expensive. For the amount of 2 minis you could get 5 liters of resin and print a ton of more minis.
I haven't heard of a slapchop other than the amazing and incredibly overhyped utensil, but these turned out really cool! Excited to try some things for myself!
"Gonna be in a great mood all day".
WOO, i might be first, time to watch the video
Where did you get the grey and turquoise paints for the metal arm? Cause it looks really good.
Kitteh is obviously based on the Eurasian lynx... But the Snowleopard pattern is a good source of inspiration! (All cat nerd here ..)
What is SLAP CHOP?!?
I know the meme utensil and kinda expected them to use it somehow
I wish you told us what colors you were using instead of just brown red grey etc
Was wondering if you guys were going to cover slap chop. Very cool, I have to agree it seems like it's not ideal when used on busts or bigger miniatures but you can get great results with it. Fantastic job :)
I’d like to see the SlapChop method by using the contrast color and then mixing it into a highlight color. Can Contrast colors be used like mother colors?
Mixing Contrast with regular paints can work, I mixed Flesh Tearers Red into a normal red when painting some Word Bearers to colour match the Rhino to Marines. The regular paint fixed the coverage issues that contrast has with big flat panels, and the contrast's strong colour gave me the colour match.
8:50 MURRRY WHAT? I cant find this astronomical grey you speak of online under that name?, please elaborate? also, was it a turquoise ink or a citadel turquoise? I'm not one to worry about specific paints usually, but I really like this result.
snow leopards are toit!
Hey Mare please make more teranids🙏🙏🙏

What is slapchop?
For flat areas I recommend using Army Painter Speedpaints. They have a slightly better flow to them than Contrast and so far I've never had them pool on a flat surface or create any ugly staining.
Yip Yip
pls move the camera on the different angle. Thank you for the video.
im kinda confused, i was expecting them to be putting miniatures in an actual slapchop and gluing the destroyed pieces together to make a bigger model
Can we just get this right - it's been around for years and is not new. For as long as transparent paints have been around this has been around.
The other thing to remember is some basic colour theory and using other colours for the underpainting rather than just a greyscale, to give a better look.
Yeah, it isn't even new or some kind of revelation in Warhammer hobby scene, not to mention scale modelling in general as well as in classical painting. But yeah, I guess calling an existing thing a weird and unfitting name is now some kind of trend everyone are hyping about
Wow, you know so much. How cool
Where slap chop?🦧
Isn't this "slapchop method" what we've all been doing with zenithal lighting this whole time? When and why did the name suddenly change?
It basically is pre-shading, akin to grisaille in classical painting. It's called "slapchop" nowadays just because Rob The Honest Wargamer made a video on this technique using this kind of pre-shade followed by Contrast paints and called it the "slapchop method". Don't know why we needed a new name for it, but there it is, and all of the UA-cam and Warhammer-adjacent Internet in general is now calling it exactly that way, even though lots of people painted that way for a long time (even with Contrasts after those were released) and did not need to call it any other way than pre-shade, zenithal, etc. Popular trends, I guess
@@blazingknight. Seems silly but there y'have it. Thanks for the information! I had no idea this was suddenly being rediscovered or reinvented in ways. I'll keep to my corner haha.
Uuuuuuuuuugh.
Yeah... using it on busts just doesn't fit. Busts are for going crazy and really doing the most artistic job possible.
Nice video. Still a lot of not in focus hands, blocking sight of the great minis 🤦♂
Sorry, but that really distracts me
You should really explain what the hell you are talking about at the start of the video.
4 min in and I still have no f@£”ing idea what a “SLAPCHOP” is
It's basically a zenithal pre-shade followed by a drybrush highlight with white and finished with translucent paint over the top (like inks or Contrasts). Just an old technique given a silly name by the Internet in the recent months
First
Are people even trying to make slapchop look good?
It's poorly made, hasty and barely thought thru...what a waste of great minis
Kinda that's why I don't like the technique being called "slapchop". It kinda sets a painter's mind on doing it fast and in haste, just "slap some paint" and be done with it. Just the way the thing that gave it's name to this technique is intended for lazy use. Pre-shading is a great way to paint and a useful tool, don't understand why people are calling it that silly name now
I think it’s a fine painting style. Will it so you any awards? Probably not, but I don’t care. I just want fairly nice models and actually get excited to paint. I do understand the issue of people relying solely on the method and not trying to improve as well, though
