  • Growing in a High Tunnel/Greenhouse year round has been our goal. We share the things we have learned will grow well, what problems we have had, and soil management. This is the second in a series in the High Tunnel Collaboration. This collaboration with Grow Family Network and Alderman Farms is put together to help educate on growing year round in HIGH TUNNELS.

    I think the notes helped you give a lot of useful information in today’s co-lab video. Personally, I would love to see how you designed the walls of your high tunnels. I’m not a builder, but I do understand physics. The information on the direction to face the high tunnel is more valuable than any I have seen to date. I’d like more information on how to sure it up to handle to hurricane winds (I’m in central LA) and any other issues you may have discovered since building it that you wish you had known. Thanks again for all the info you’ve already given.

    Danny, i would rather eat directly off the plants than to put them up for later anyway. Lol. You don't lose the nutrients that way. Besides if you have plenty growing you will be fine. The great thing about growing in a greenhouse is you can grow and eat fresh.

    Hi Danny, no planning, put greenhouse on side of house that is mostly facing the S and the garage is the whole back wall to the greenhouse. I now have a tunnel out back and again went with the structure that was there and just put a greenhouse tarp on it and had a great summer and now have (even down to 8 degrees) cabbage in it doing great. In my greenhouse, I have cauliflower in a green stalk doing good. I have for a very long time tried to grow something year around. My basic is parsley and other herbs (look at the prices of seasonings and you will see that it is a good thing to start with to save money). In the winter, I can grow a salad mix all winter and then take them and put them in the garden in the Spring.
    I use wire on the ground to stop the moles, voles, etc. I have raised beds with no bottoms (can't make my own raised beds) and they have a seat since I am disabled. Love them love them love them. Not enough space!!! I live very close to the Growers solution, but can not afford one of theirs.
    I am putting beans and big squashes out in the ground this coming year. They take up too much room and can cross pollinate and give you some strange squashes. And, my potatoes go in containers outside - had a problem this year because chicken compost was too high in nitrogen and needed to be amended.
    Soil, I use my chicken hay compost over hegelkulture. Now, I have to figure out how to fix the soil for next year.
    Watering is my big expense for the tunnel and greenhouse. Yes! weeding is not a problem - YEA!
    I am jealous of your big tunnels, but have to do what I can do and it is great.
    Was the manure that you used Black Kow? - I have used that for years and never had a problem with it.

    • @DeepSouthHomestead
      @DeepSouthHomestead  3 роки тому

      It was my own cow manure they're hay had Grazon used on it and I didn't know it.

    • @marthaadams8326
      @marthaadams8326 3 роки тому

      @@DeepSouthHomestead OH dear, well they seem fine and hopefully, it was just garden that you lost - I buy black cow and was worried that it might be used in dairy cows - that is where they get their manure which they compost. I use my chicken and so far, everything is fine with the hay/chicken manure compost except it was too high in Nitrogen - so had to use some epsom salts and then everything grew great this last year.

    And my quail poo will heat up a compost pile fast. I don't feed my rabbits hay. They don't like it. So what i do is giving them grasses and such from my yard. I have never put any chemicals or anything in my yard, so i feel good about using my manures. And thinking about using compost to heat my greenhouse for my tropical plants during the winter.

    Mr. Danny, would you be able to share a list of modifications that you did to you high tunnels? I am located in Central FL & your modifications leaves me to believe that those mods could strengthen the high for the weather that is experienced here I my area. Plus , I will be installing two units in a commercial zoned property. One tunnel will be used or micro greens the other for veggies. I appreciate your time in responding. I am a Vintaged aged individual that wishes he was able to convince his spouse to move. But due the age, I am hunkering down & using my warehouse property to ‘farm’.
