    Congratulations Jeff Holland family. I've had a rough 3 years gardening and I've been at it since the 60's but the weather has been a curve ball. Three years ago, I planted with a broken saccrum (that bone between the hips) and a walker. It was rough but I made it work. Just be vigilant, don't give up, just keep planting and harvesting, thank your creator and Smile! Deep breath, then start again!

    At 78 years of age, I'm an old "Dead Head" (Grateful Dead fan), Wanda, so I really enjoyed your beautiful tie-dye t-shirt! For whatever reason, I especially enjoyed today's video even more than usual. We harvested our ButterNut squashes this week. We're blessed with a great homemade 16' x 12' thermostatically-heated-and-cooled greenhouse, which is perfect for what we use it for, but, as I learn more and more from you guys, I aspire to eventually have a high tunnel -- (with a wood stove in it for our chilly 0°F to -10°F winters, -31°F all time low) - for some of the plants which would be better to grow inside than outside. If we get a high tunnel, we will be able to grow turmeric and ginger and other plants harder to grow outside. We've got cloning equipment for cloning starts off of some our our plants. All for now. May God bless and protect Deep South Homestead and all who dwell there! 🙏🙏

    Get some American Ladybird beetles, aka Ladybugs, they eat the aphids. My friend in Tucson, Az used to get aphids on his roses, and this was his natural solution to the problem. Hope this helps. Also Ladybirds will clump up any hibernate in quiet places of the greenhouse or other places like deep leaf litter that in not disturbed over the Winter months.

    We need so much more infrastructure for our garden right now! Watching Wanda pick those butter beans and not have to bend over made me know we have to get more panels. We had a webbing panel for our few sugar snap peas we had and a few t-posts for the tomato plants and my husband trellised and arched our pear tomatoes and that worked wonderfully. But it was such a small start. I found that after the hot summer our second generation volunteer slicing and paste tomatoes and our peppers did much better after the horn worms left but the dang early frost got them! We tried overwintering a couple of our nicer pepper plants inside last year but they didn’t do much because we don’t have adequate window space or light. But it can be done and we are eager to get our own greenhouse and winter food storage set up. We learn as we go and watching this channel is so inspiring and also it’s good to know that we have like-minded people out there everywhere. I listen to you guys and it’s like you’re our neighbors we have always known and worked and gone to church with. Plus we learn from the comments as well. Thank you!

      I went to rural king ( a store in my area ) and bought a few $20 LED lights and grew cherry tomatoes last winter indoors. The peppers were very tiny but maybe with better stronger light. You're right it can be done! And on the cheap!

    • @francescapoteet5481
      @francescapoteet5481 Рік тому +1

      @@myfuturepuglife 🙌 we bought a small Keter shelf and assembled and hung some LED’s with light timers to do seedlings. But we need SO much more and we’d have to do away with needed furniture to accomplish that. Plus most of our property is wooded and “hills and hollers”, haha. We don’t get a lot of inside light the way our place is positioned with surrounding woods on three sides. We’re not willing to do away with the pines and hardwoods that shade the house because of the deer, turkeys, owls, hawks, and Indian hen woodpeckers etc we see. Trying to preserve a home for the wildlife and give balance to our ecosystem ~

    I definitely plan to have one, to extend my season here in nw WI. Unlike some folks, I don't wish to primarily grow under cover though, even if I manage to do well with it, avoiding air flow etc. issues or anything. The reason is that I've learned that veg/fruits grown under cover, whether it's glass or plastics, can be lacking in certain nutritional factors. Tomatoes it turns out, make a thing which in turn protects us against skin cancer when grown out in the sun, but not when grown under cover. That's all not to mention greenhouse growing that's not in-ground, so, not connected to the soil food web, the fungal network, which transports and creates nutrients. So, to maximize my outdoor growing resiliency in this time of unpredictable, unusual weather of the Grand Solar Minimum ( solar cycle we're in now), I also want to increase my knowledge and experience of the very resilient wild edibles in my area, and grow more of them in my yard, along with very hardy and resilient veg and fruits. Jung's seeds catalog has a few fruits I've had my eye on for awhile, (waiting until I got onto my own property again ) such as dogwood fruits and quince. They may not be super tasty, but have the vitamins and hardiness. I'm sure there's tasty ways to use them, (without too much sweetener, esp. as one gets used to them). Getting some experience, seeing which herbs are actually quite hardy and learning to use them more and more, helps too. Very little bit of food and medicinals helps, and every bit I don't have to plant again myself, much less do a lot with to help it grow or survive, is awesome ! What things reseed themselves, how can I help that area be weed free, so they can grow and I can find them :) ( some things that reseed themselves come up quite late or slowly, compared to weeds and tree-seed seedlings). From choosing a different area to put them, to having it well weeded and mulched the year b4, to learning to use the best soil-life inoculant for that plant type which the weeds DON'T prefer, will all help. I'm recently learning the latter from Dr. Elaine Ingram's soil food web, webinar series. A recent one. I'm all for keeping stuff VERY simple, very lazy-gardner-esque... but it sounds like I do need to learn a bit about that and do it, it can REALLY help.
    So, along with Mark Sheppard's S.T.U.N. method of planting and growing trees/fruits and nuts etc. , this is my approach to living in these weather-issue times... . God bless y'all !

    Always enjoy seeing your crops growing. You have a lot of diversity
    May I suggest a way to prevent aphids next year. As pole beans get about a foot tall, start removing lower leaves. Make a slurry of Surround and paint the lower six inches of stem. Be diligent about keeping leaves from re-growing near the ground. What you're doing is reducing ant access to the plant, and forcing them to encounter the Surround if they want to herd aphids onto your crops.
    Chuckle. Glad a young family got the prize! I almost entered and decided that if we really wanted one, we could find a way to get one or improvise & build. That being said, it got me thinking about some possibilities to mull around a bit. Thank you.

    Congrats to the Holland’s! I hope we get to hear their story too. Did I see a tiny lizard moving around in the bed as Miss Wanda was harvesting the turmeric? 😂

    Hi Danny and Wanda love your Channel if I had a home with at least two acres I would definitely save to buy at least two tunnel but I live in the city not much of a yard I have a small Greenhouse that I start my seeds raised beds bags my yard looks like a little jungle I even have a Cooper with chickens . I started this because of the pandemic and I do not trust our government. I do enjoy your Channel and the advice you give us how to grow more specially all year round love watching you showing off your beautiful vegetables God bless you

    AMEN! AMEN! & AMEN! I built my first greenhouse 15 yrs ago...have another one, and am building an underground greenhouse now. Chem trails are what scared me to build the first one..26x 16...never regretted it! Have had magnificent experience with it and are totally sold on them! If I can do it by myself with a huge dream and a boatload of determination...Anybody can do it too!! Go Danny & Wanda! Totally agree!! Julie Ann 😊

    The first year I had a great garden for zone 10A Florida HOT weather. The past two years it has been horrible to get ANYTHING to grow and if you do get something started, the bug and disease pressure is horrific. I didn't want to use chemicals...that's the whole point of getting away from grocery store fruits and veg. Thank you for tell me it's not all my fault. As soon as we move, I WILL have a green house! Thank you Wanda and Danny for sharing your wealth of knowledge. God bless you!

    Hello when y'all go into your high tunnels Danny and wanda! For the first time this year I planted a Cherokee yellow wax beans and let me tell you I've never seen plants that are so prolific! And I planted them in the shade I planted them in full sun and then I planted them and half and half because I wanted to see which area would do best and even in full shade they are producing like crazy. So far I've got a busting one gallon freezer bag full of them and there are a ton left on the plants super excited. Another being that I'm growing right now and it is slowly taking over one of my trellises is the Thai green bean which is delicious and prolific and all the tomatoes are so heavy with tomatoes right now that I have about 5 to 6 supports in the plans that are in pots alone I ran out of support for the ones in the garden area but it's blowing me away the quantity of tomatoes praise God we are receiving this season. We will not be planting during the summer time cuz it is blooming hot here in Texas and it just seems to be getting worse every year. Without a high tunnel or a little Greenhouse of any kind it's very difficult
