Not sure if you've heard how they met or not. Ren had finished up busking for the day and was walking home and came upon young Sam singing with no mike or anything and not many people engaged. Ren andvSam were a great team full of enthusiasm and joy in making music. That era of their careers cannot be replicated as they've each developed into their unique styles. But there is something magical about their collaboration; especially their busking videos where they're experimenting and feeding off each other's performance.
About 12 years ago, Ren’s described his genre as “Rhythmalogical-melodically-hip-hoppy-folky-bluesy-shoezy-rastaman mashup”. All of Sam’s music is great but his Time Will Fly or Lose It All (Live) would be good choices.
Ren discovered Sam Tompkins busking on his own on a street corner when Ren was on his way home from his own busking session. Sam had no mic or anything and was just singing with a hat out. Ren stopped and offered to set up a mic and accompany him.. thus a unique friendship was born... fast forward to 2024. Ren now has a No1 album and a huge YT following. Sam recently opened for a played with Justin Bieber.. so there you go.

Ren is just a journey, across songs and often within his songs. I was immediately beguiled by Hi Ren, and my ear adapted to his unconventional ways. It's often songs that don't hit at first that grow into my favorites. But my tastes run from unconventional artists like Zappa and Beefheart to some catchy pop. I don't understand my own preferences, cause I also feel cold or adverse towards other things that are popular and/or very accomplished. Fortunately, it just doesn't matter lol.
Amen, Lou! Difficult to understand what floats our boat, ain't it. There's artists I love and similar artists that just leave me cold. But you're right, it doesn't matter!
Yes, I love this. One quite old Ren song, that stands the test of time is "Hold On". But if you like Ren's more theatrical stuff, you really need to get to "Money Game 3". Ren and Sam also have several wonderful busking sessions here on UA-cam.
This is one of my faves! I enjoy your reactions and your observations. Check out Sam’s solo stuff “Lose It All” or “Time Will Fly” both are beautiful! ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻

It was filmed in a parking garage and with an acoustic guitar and just shows how talented they are. Thanks for another great reaction 💜💜
Great job, I really liked your insight on gaining maturity of a personal style. Something I'd not considered before to look at early work to evaluate an artist's developed (their own) voice.

Izzy you found one of my favorites! there is a studio video of this as well, but the live versions of almost any song is usually my favorite. I think there may also be a third version and Sam and Ren do some LIVE busking in Brighton, those are a must see.
There is this crown music version, car park attendant, the music video (filmed in the house) and a busking live on the street version. The live is not the best quality, hard to hear them at times. Why can't I think of the other studio version or is this it?
I think that it makes sense for you to check out studio versions first when it comes to Ren because I think it would really interest you to see how they transformed it into this. It’s a completely different vibe. All versions of this song are brilliant though. They made a banger.
A beautiful mess. 😊 My favorite song of Sam's is Lose It All. His voice is maturing, and really, really good. You might start Ren's Love Music series, which is mostly on his Freckled Angels album, but with Part 4 on Stick Boi.
Love all your reactions. Check it Ren & Sam doing Earned it/mans world. Coming from a performance point of view. Have you ever seen INXS? Check out What you need live from Wembley 1991 Michael Hutchence with the crowd at the Palm of his hand 😁
What Ren and Sam did with this reminds me (bear with me, because its a stretch) of what some prog bands of the 70's like Yes did with some of their music. Having different parts that at first blush don't seem to form a cohesive whole. I love the ride they take me on, personally.
As always, love your reaction ☺️ If you haven't reacted to the blind eyed featuring the angry carpark attendant guy, you should! It's my favorite version!
I think right now we’ve all realized that the rent is his own genre. Yeah I think you’re talking about his cadence and his flow. I believe those are the words you’re looking for and yeah of course his lyrical paralysis ridiculous. He was saying him he was writing between 10 and 20,000 words a day you know quite a bit of stuff very intelligent so He’s got a lot going for him. I mean just imagine he’s been doing all this while operating under 50% of his level. I think he said in the last year or two he’s about 75% maybe up to 80% now he doesn’t know he’ll get close to you, hopefully by August, but his numbers are accurate and he did all of this at half of his ability. Well other musicians probably need to look out one and two. I’m pretty sure Sony is kicking themselves in the ass right by now before spitting him out as he says..
You should try these Sam Tompkins songs, See Me, Lose it All, Bloodline, Time Will Fly. He has such a vocal range , but most of his songs are a bit sad
Hi fellow yamyam.. new sub! I’m a metalhead but I love Ren, check out this but angry car king attendant version, I think that’s brilliant. I look forward to more of your ren reactions, I’m about to binge your other Ren vids now 🤘🏼😃🤘🏼
There are half a dozen versions of this, some busking, others different sorts of studio/official each unique. One of the busking vids went a bit viral at the time not too long after the stem cell treatments made it possible for Ren to life somewhat normally again. The rest followed. The official video is dramatically gloomy. The Angry Car Park version is funny, but in my mind it really shows Sam’s vocal talent and skills as he just walks along laughing and singing.
This “bit of a mess” is like that ballerina who is not technically perfect but who elicits emotion in her dance. You feel his joy… and agony. Dig your engaging camera placement and screen set-up
May I ask why labeling thing as "a genre" would matter? I can see the usefulness of that in classifying physical albums in a store, but with so much fusion music going on for the last 20 yrs... I kinda can't but wonder why would ppl still be hung up on that.

I think that it makes sense for you to check out studio versions first when it comes to Ren because I think it would really interest you to see how they transformed it into this. It’s a completely different vibe. All versions of this song are brilliant though. They made a banger.
I plan on checking the other versions out. Hopefully won't be too far away.
A beautiful mess. 😊
My favorite song of Sam's is Lose It All. His voice is maturing, and really, really good.
You might start Ren's Love Music series, which is mostly on his Freckled Angels album, but with Part 4 on Stick Boi.
I'll check those out. Would be interested to see what Sam is doing now.
Its The Blues but Up Beat mixed in somehow
Love all your reactions. Check it Ren & Sam doing Earned it/mans world. Coming from a performance point of view. Have you ever seen INXS? Check out What you need live from Wembley 1991 Michael Hutchence with the crowd at the Palm of his hand 😁
Thanks! I know a bit of INXS. But I would be interested top check that one out. Thanks for the recommendation!
What Ren and Sam did with this reminds me (bear with me, because its a stretch) of what some prog bands of the 70's like Yes did with some of their music. Having different parts that at first blush don't seem to form a cohesive whole. I love the ride they take me on, personally.
I can see what you mean, Chris! I'm gonna check out some of the other versions of this for comparison.
As always, love your reaction ☺️ If you haven't reacted to the blind eyed featuring the angry carpark attendant guy, you should! It's my favorite version!
Thanks! I haven't done it yet. I've heard good things.
Thanks! I’ll add them to the list. I enjoy a good sad song.
❤✌
Please do Earned it / Mans World / Falling busking video w these two.
I'll do that soon Barbara! Seems to be a popular one!
You gotta do Love Musoc 1-3. Also Penitence ft Molly McKenna
It's like a spoken word 🔥
I think that's the first request I've had for those, I'll put them on the list. Thanks!
Hi fellow yamyam.. new sub! I’m a metalhead but I love Ren, check out this but angry car king attendant version, I think that’s brilliant. I look forward to more of your ren reactions, I’m about to binge your other Ren vids now 🤘🏼😃🤘🏼
Thanks and welcome! I’ll check that version out.
Have you checked out Ren with his band called The Big Push.
I have Cheryl! I've reacted to a few. I need to organise them into a dedicated playlist.
Another great reaction! Have you done Ren and sam - what went wrong? I love it!!
Not yet! I'll add it to the list. Thanks!
please do Sam Tompkins Lose it all live hero live and Phone in heaven live
Thanks for the recommendations, William! I'l try and do one of those soon!
I'm interested to check out these different versions! Thanks for the info!
This “bit of a mess” is like that ballerina who is not technically perfect but who elicits emotion in her dance. You feel his joy… and agony. Dig your engaging camera placement and screen set-up
Thanks! Yeah, those are fair observations! I was referring to the structure as being a bit messy rather than the performance.
May I ask why labeling thing as "a genre" would matter? I can see the usefulness of that in classifying physical albums in a store, but with so much fusion music going on for the last 20 yrs... I kinda can't but wonder why would ppl still be hung up on that.
Acknowledging and referencing pre existing genre's help to understand what is going on and explore the influences on the piece/artist.

This is ren thanking his fans for one million subs!
It’s very raw and heartfelt
He talks about using this platform for good etc
It gives you a little peak into his heart ❤
I'll check it out Eyde! Thanks!
