Not sure if you've heard how they met or not. Ren had finished up busking for the day and was walking home and came upon young Sam singing with no mike or anything and not many people engaged. Ren stopped and said if you use a mike, I guarantee you will draw a crowd. Ren offered his mike and guitar. Sam said yes to the microphone and amp. Ren sat and played guitar for him and sure enough a crowd grew. Ren let Sam keep all of the money they made. And they basically became brothers after that. I suggest Sam's Time Will Fly. It has a clip of that very first day they met and shows Sam's journey. It's a beautiful video. Thanks for this great reaction (as always).

Ren's first stem cell treatment was in May 2016. He had a second stem cell treatment in March 2017. He started busking again in May 2017, with his flatmate (and future bandmate) Romain Axisa. Videos of his busking performances of "Blind Eyed" with Sam Tompkins started going viral online a year later in spring 2018. A month later they released the official single for "Blind Eyed", with a beat that was co-produced by Ren and Ed Solo (a DJ in Brighton). The official music video was directed by Samuel Perry-Falvey.

Ren doesn't always follow the norm when it comes to making music and this song is amazing because it's unpredictable and unique. Ren said in an interview that he doesn't believe there are any rules when it comes to making art. It would be nice to see more artists be unconventional like Ren, but while corporate record lables will only allow artists to make safe repetitive songs i can't see it changing. Check out Sam Tompkins - Time Will Fly....... Great raction video. Thanks Izzy

Didn't feel like a mess to me! o_O This is one of my favourite live music captures on the web. Just two very talented young men, obviously enjoying each other's performances doing a song they wrote together. I've always been partial to multi-movement songs rather than staid verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus formula stuff tho, so I guess I'm biased, but this has me gripped from start to finish, & I never bore of hearing it (& watching reaction vids to it on the YooToobs!)
This is closer to the way they wrote this one, just the two lads & a bit of guitar from Ren. Maybe check out what Ren did production-wise to turn it into something closer to a radio-playable track by giving the OMV a watch sometime. ;)
Sam has been signed for a few years now. Amazing voice. Well worth giving a couple of his tracks a listen. For a masterful use of the intentional voice crack to pull at the heartstrings, I'll recommend "See Me": ua-cam.com/video/kvDbMT3fLaY/v-deo.html ;)

When you listen to the original studio track it less “messy”, because it’s a cohesive (and heavily produced) electronic track. They made some really interesting choices turning it into a guitar+vocals live track, and people seem to really dig it. I enjoy all the different versions, and you can watch them busk it in different settings and the lyrics even evolved over time.

@@IzzyIzenstain so I went through all the videos I watched and here I am this was the first one I watched. Do you know how many you did before this? I know I watched the money games was Ginny and screech before this. I don’t remember you reacting to that I’m gonna have to go back and look and chalk outlines before anyway I think I’ve mentioned to you before my three favorite songs are well for listening to in the car or what not you know I love a lot of his songs but I don’t you know listen to them all the time suicide and for Joe I can barely make it through man without breaking down so I try not to feel that way off you know what I mean but yeah, my three favorites to listen to our Genesis murderer and castle made of sand live version on the first two for show but the regular version on the first two are amazing as well. I just prefer the live version when you see the noises and background sounds like he’s making with his mouth at the same time, like on Genesis when I watched a live version and non-murderer because he’s playing the guitar on murderer as well Genesis he’s just singing and rapping, but doing background noises with his voice as well. I just sit there disbelief how talented is this kid has way too much talent for one person, whoever was behind him in the line for talent when they were baby got completely screwed! So I don’t know if you’ve checked those out but yeah if you do one of them if you haven’t, I would love to see you react to one of those three and I can’t believe you don’t even have 2000 subscribers. How do you have this channel? One of my three reactors on all the UA-cam and That you only got that many subscribers man where are you out of get that number up that’s low so much that it’s criminal! Anywhere I wanna watch this one again yeah he said this is the song that he credits some with starting his career and of course high red is the one that made his career blow up, but he said he was on his way back from busing and he saw Sam singing on the corner and Sam several years ago and him so I think he said he was like 13 or 14 at the time and he couldn’t believe his voice that it was like angelic! He said you needed an amplifier buddy and it will change everything for you. He said he use mine so they plugged it in. He started singing and just started playing guitar and he said a few minutes the street was packed.! so I wanted to ask you did you ever get around to doing another Sam Tompkins reaction mate? Ren is just a journey, across songs and often within his songs. I was immediately beguiled by Hi Ren, and my ear adapted to his unconventional ways. It's often songs that don't hit at first that grow into my favorites. But my tastes run from unconventional artists like Zappa and Beefheart to some catchy pop. I don't understand my own preferences, cause I also feel cold or adverse towards other things that are popular and/or very accomplished. Fortunately, it just doesn't matter lol.

I think right now we’ve all realized that the rent is his own genre. Yeah I think you’re talking about his cadence and his flow. I believe those are the words you’re looking for and yeah of course his lyrical paralysis ridiculous. He was saying him he was writing between 10 and 20,000 words a day you know quite a bit of stuff very intelligent so He’s got a lot going for him. I mean just imagine he’s been doing all this while operating under 50% of his level. I think he said in the last year or two he’s about 75% maybe up to 80% now he doesn’t know he’ll get close to you, hopefully by August, but his numbers are accurate and he did all of this at half of his ability. Well other musicians probably need to look out one and two. I’m pretty sure Sony is kicking themselves in the ass right by now before spitting him out as he says..

There are half a dozen versions of this, some busking, others different sorts of studio/official each unique. One of the busking vids went a bit viral at the time not too long after the stem cell treatments made it possible for Ren to life somewhat normally again. The rest followed.
The official video is dramatically gloomy. The Angry Car Park version is funny, but in my mind it really shows Sam’s vocal talent and skills as he just walks along laughing and singing.

This “bit of a mess” is like that ballerina who is not technically perfect but who elicits emotion in her dance. You feel his joy… and agony. Dig your engaging camera placement and screen set-up

Thanks! Yeah, those are fair observations! I was referring to the structure as being a bit messy rather than the performance.

May I ask why labeling thing as "a genre" would matter? I can see the usefulness of that in classifying physical albums in a store, but with so much fusion music going on for the last 20 yrs... I kinda can't but wonder why would ppl still be hung up on that.

Acknowledging and referencing pre existing genre's help to understand what is going on and explore the influences on the piece/artist.
