Catching rainbow fish for my aquarium!

- In this video I head into the Australian bush to catch rainbow fish (crimsonspotted duboulayi) for my fish tank! Jason from Australian Biotopes shared his knowledge and showed us some stunning habitats surrounding Brisbane where the rainbow fish and other native fish species reside. We began our journey at Nick's KeepingFishSimple shop and made our way up the mountain to view some lookouts. We then followed Northbrook Creek down to where we were able to catch the fish, and stopped off at some other interesting locations. Jason was able to provide some great underwater and drone footage from the day which you will see in the video.
A special thanks to AB who also came along and shared his knowledge, and Nick's friend James (Brucie) who did some filming. I'm so happy to be able to share this great day with you!

Australia is such a beautiful country. If I had my life to do over again, I think I'd do everything in my power to immigrate.
Glad you got your fish. They were pretty stressed out when they were put in the fish shop aquariums, but they should colour up really well as they acclimate to the now surroundings. I'll bet they are looking super now!
Looks like you had a great time. Nice to see fish in the wild

Hi Kaity. Very jealous watching this video. Reminded me of the wonderful time I had as a backpacker in Australia. Now stuck in freezing UK where last night it was -7 degrees! Amazing you can pick up fish in their natural environment, and beautiful environments at that. What a great day out and thanks for sharing it with everyone.
Thank you so much Dominic, I'm glad you enjoyed it 😄 Wow!! -7 degrees, and I thought 24 degrees was cold 🤣 It's definitely nice having the warm weather here

Great video Kaity and would love to see more like that. Can't wait to see them in you're tank. Made me laugh when you said why do they call them twin bridges!!!🤣🤣
Thank you so much Alex!! Hahaha yes, I was like surely they must be big bridges to name the place after them 🤣
@@Kaityscichlids 🤣🤣😍😍
i am really enjoy the video, thank you
Thank you so much Han!
Awesome video Kaity, I didn't know we had such beautiful freshwater fish here in OZ, wow. The river looks splendid and healthy.
Thank you so much!! Yes it was seriously so beautiful
Very cool to be able to do this close to home ❤
Yes it's so so cool!!
Hi Kaity! I enjoyed this video so much. Thank you for showing so much of the enviroment. Australia is such a beautifull country! Funny to see that you are swimming in a river while its freezing where i live 🥶 im looking forward to see you get the fish and put them in your beautifull tank ❤ greetings from the Netherlands.
Thank you so much Vincent!! Yes I forget that on the other side of the world you guys are all in Winter! I am adding them in at the end of the week and am really excited :) I think they are going to look great
great video 👍🐟 I spend alot of time out that way riding motorcycles and pass by all this stuff but have never actually stopped to take in the nature . Thanks for sharing
Thank you 😊 Yes there were plenty of motorbikes out and about around Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious! It's a great spot for riding
Great video !
Thank you 😊
Great vid. Love this as a rainbow keeper. Must say, hearing that the traps are salt water - they are known as shrimp nets (used in freshwater) down south and have been used for bait for generations (well, my grandfather used them, as we continue to). Cool to see them used for this - would have never known.
Oh how cool! I had no idea. They did the job really well. Thank you so much 😊
Love the content Kaity! Perfect vibes for enjoying my morning coffee. Here in Florida you have inspired me to go hunt some Florida Flagfish (Jordanella floridae). Cheers from the other side of the globe!
That's awesome!! Thank you so much Eric 😊
Australia 🇦🇺. Never been…… i have to go beautiful. Your tanks are looking amazing 🐠. 👋✅
Thank you so much Mike 😊
Great video Kaity, it was a fun day had by all, it was very refreshing going out with some younger fish lovers and seeing how excited you got seeing the fish in the wild, I'll bring you a couple of other fish I've bred for your tank when we do it, it should be another fun day 🙂
This was meant to be us back in 2020 or so 🤣 maybe one day
@@BlakesAquatics Yeah that was bad timing, I was on my way up to Cairns, you are always welcome if you get back up this way, I was the same I was going to hit you up when I went down to Melbourne but I was down there to do a biotope for the Bendigo Library and was only there for 4 days and I was lucky to finish it in that time, we spent most of the time looking for hardscape and I only had a day to scape the actual tank, We'll get together one day 🙂
Thank you so much Jason! It was such a great day. I appreciate you taking us out and showing us all the habitats so much 😊 I'm looking forward to scaping the tank!
@@australianbiotopes4563 absolutely, i very much look forward to that day
2:30 hahaha nice
My life 🤣

This is amazing fun. I wish I could go to South America to do what you did. I’m into tetras, axolotls, dwarf frogs, and newts mostly. I love your beautiful aquariums!
That would be seriously incredible to go to South America and do that!! I love all of those too, it would be cool to go herping one day and look for things like newts. Thank you so much :)
Actually I would love to travel to Australia too! I live in Wisconsin, USA. Lol
Nice video. Looked like a lot of fun. Beautiful country where even picnic table are venomous. 😛 When fish spotting, a good pair of polarized glasses is a must, preferably in the copper range of colors. Smith Optics has a nice pair for fly-fishing anglers. That is so neat to be able to go to the wild and catch fish you normally see in tropical fish stores. Very enjoyable video...I subbed.
Wow .. what beautiful scenery and catching fish super cool...i enjoyed a lot 😍🙏🤓 from india 🇮🇳
Thank you so much!! I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊
👍🏽👍🏽 That was a brilliant day out Kaity ... I can see you creating a shallow tank river biotope with maybe a crayfish and some small species in the new year.
Thank you so much!! Jason is even going to help me get started this year on making a river Biotope. I'm very excited 😁
@@Kaityscichlids Have a good day ... I think you will enjoy the river stream set up in the link below...
ua-cam.com/video/FCzHyJGzOVc/v-deo.html
hello from Boston, Massachusetts, USA! Winter is just starting here...🙁......16° Fahrenheit.....not sure what that is in Celsius.....lol......love the video and my Australian Rainbows
Wowzas, that is cold 🥶 It's so cool you guys keep the native Australian rainbows over in the states too!
Wonderful field trip,if you get a polarized filter it cut thru the glare, giving you an amazing sights under the water.
I just ordered one yesterday from DJI!
What a brilliant video, thanks so much for sharing. Here in the UK it's currently around -1 deg C and snowing, I also notice your petrol price is almost half that of ours😒. I did live in Australia ( near Sydney) many years ago, you have a beautiful Country, I wish I'd been into fish keeping when I lived there. Those huge aquariums are awesome. x
Thank you so much 😊 And wow!! That is COLD! I also can't believe your petrol is double the price, I thought it was bad here 😬
Twin Bridges used to be a VERY popular spot to go camping before the council decided to stop allowing vehicles to go to certain areas. I've seen lung fish swimming up the rapids and even saw a pair of platypus in the river one evening we were camped there. Was magical
Wow, that's so cool!! How amazing. It's such a shame it has gotten a bit destroyed by the floods
@@Kaityscichlids agreed but it happens on occasion. As destructive as floods are they re-fertilise the lands they flood
I have to admit that it had never occurred to me to catch native fish for aquariums in the local creeks until recently
Dang, i was born on the wrong continent !😅😍 These "creek collecting" videos are awesome !
Hahaha, thank you!! We are pretty lucky here Down Under
This is cool. I used to catch fish out of Four Mile Creek at Strathpine as kid to put in my 4-foot tank. 20+ years later I was doing the same in Rockhampton for my six-foot tank. Then, a few years back I was catching Pacific Blue-eyes and Rainbows in the Nth Pine River up in the fresh for another tank. I really like focussing on natives. I doubt I'll ever have another aquarium though. I live mobile now, so not very practical :)
That's really cool! I am thinking of getting some Pacific blue eyes at some point. And yes it definitely wouldn't be very practical for mobile living 🤣 I'm sure you can enjoy lots of them in nature though living mobile 😊
@@Kaityscichlids Most definitely, Kaity. I always get a little thrill when I see fish doing their thing in the wild. And snakes, lizards, birds etc.
When the tides are in their low cycle (neap tides?), and fresh water is flowing, there are some good spots down behind the North Pine Golf Club worth exploring.
One day I would love to visit Australia because of all the wildlife reptiles and protea plants
We don't have Protea plants as they are native to South Africa, but we do have plants from the Proteaceae family e.g. Banksia, Waratahs etc.
Don’t forget ur water shoes 👟 😂 , cool video !
Hahaha yes, I was lucky I wore my thongs 🤣
👍👍
Tip, get a Polaroid filter for the camera to take the glare off the water surface. Then you will be able to see many more fish.
Thank you!! I ordered one from DJI, I'm excited to give it a go
@@Kaityscichlids You will probably hate it till you get the hang of rotating it for the right angle. It works very well to take pictures through windows also. Enjoy it when you receive and start playing. Just remember that you lose about halve the light available, but the camera should compensate for it.
Beautiful views. I think you are lucky to live in a subtropical climate. It has the best of both worlds. It is winter in the UK. 🥶
Yes we are definitely lucky here with the weather!! It does get a bit warm but it's not too extreme. I keep forgetting most other places would be in Winter over Christmas
Really enjoyed the video. Brought back fond memories of field trips when I took ichthyology here in Kentucky. Appreciated seeing the natural habitats of the rainbow fish. It would have been helpful to add labels of plants and fish. Additional of water quality info would have been nice. Seems rainbowfish like temperatures in low to mid- 70s F (23 degrees C). Thanks so much for the memories.
Thank you so much Gillian 😊 That makes me so happy to hear it brought back those memories for you! I think when Nick releases his video on his KeepingFishSimple channel it will have all of that information hopefully
nice river
I started doing my own find and catch aquarium fish for collection. I have seen those rainbow fish in my area, Florida. they are pretty nice.
That's awesome! It's definitely a lot of fun 😊
@@Kaityscichlids Yes. So far, I have 3 Jaguar Parachromis, 3 African Jewel Cichlids, I think I have a flowerhorn and 5 Mayan Cichlids. All of them are Juvenile. For me, It's better finding them than buying them.
