  • Serial killer nurse Lucy Letby will never be released from prison after she was given 14 whole-life orders for murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others.
The former neonatal nurse, 33, fatally injected seven infants with air, tried to kill two others by lacing their feeding bags with insulin and attempted to force a tube down another's throat.
Letby, from Hereford, was in her mid-20s and working at the Countess of Chester Hospital when the killings took place between June 2015 and June 2016. Those of her victims that survived have been left with life-changing injuries.
She denied a total of 22 charges but was convicted of seven counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder - relating to six babies - following a ten-month trial at Manchester Crown Court.
She was cleared of two further counts of attempted murder, while jurors, who deliberated for more than 100 hours over 22 days, could not reach verdicts on a final six counts of attempted murder.
Letby refused to come into court to hear the final verdicts returned or to hear her sentence.
The judge, Mr Justice Goss, imposed life sentences with whole-life orders on each of the 14 counts of which she was convicted.
He told her: "This was a cruel, calculated and cynical campaign of child murder involving the smallest and most vulnerable children, knowing your actions were causing significant physical suffering.
"There was a malevolence bordering on sadism in your actions.
"During the course of this trial you have coldly denied any responsibility for your wrongdoing.
"You have no remorse. There are no mitigating factors.
"In their totality, the offences of murder and attempted murder are of exceptionally high seriousness, and just punishment, according to law, requires a whole life order."
