    Hi Everyone!
    Today I get to a project that Heidi has been waiting on for a while ;) Her 996 Turbo is badly in need of a new front air dam/splitter and front right wheel well liner. Not very difficult at all and makes a huge difference in the look of the front end! I hope you enjoy the video :)

    I replaced my front splitter with a genuine Porsche part and had the same fitment issue. It seemed a little short. Maybe that is how it stays in with only 2 screws. Anyway, my solution was the same. Start in the middle and warm up the edges and then work it into place. Mostly posting this for folks that think they might avoid that struggle with a Porsche part.
    Thanks for all the help over the years!

    The timing of me watching this was spot on. My 2003 4S has the same spoiler/lip on the front, and I just got mine in the mail a couple of days ago. Since I live in the Desert around Palm Springs, I was waiting for it to cool off a wee bit more before I tackled this project. But now that I.ve seen it done as well as your genius hack I am going to put mine out on the driveway for a couple of hours and use Natures 110 degree heat gun first.
    Thanks Franny

    Nice work. I wonder if - before you expose the splitter to the cold - you should heat-gun the whole thing on the chance you can relieve the high residual tensile stresses from assembly. Could be the right time to do this job is in Summer!

      @HeidiandFranny  2 роки тому +4

      I wonder if it being out in the hot sun will reset it a tad. Probably good is is a tad small - better than a tad to big.

    Great job, Franny. That lip was a little bit harder than I expected, probably because it's not an original Porsche part. The heat gun was a great tip. Tight fit, but that's best I reckon :)

      Thanks so much! Probably best it is a tad short. It was about 65F in the garage and I'm wondering what it will do in the hot summer sun. If you are fitting this in the summer I bet leaving it out in the sun would do the trick :) I hope all is well :)

    I can't believe the shocks came back leaking, I have seen another youtube channel where they send off old Lambo Diablo suspension to be rebuilt andi t comes back multiple times. It's insane how much they charge for these parts for old cars and then can't even do the job correctly. It's mind blowing honestly.

  • @michaelskinner896

    Nice job! I was recently gifted a 1999 Boxster (986) and I've been doing lots of cleaning, paint correction, and some basic maintenance items. My next project is replacing front rotors and pads, along with SS brake lines all the way around. I live in Phoenix and fortunately the car has spent the vast majority of its life in Phoenix, so there is zero rust, as well as low mileage (27,500). Considering its age, it's in very good shape. While cleaning out the radiator "cubbies" I noticed that some of the plastic bits on the lower bumper and the driver wheel well are either broken and/or scuffed up badly. I thought I'd just replace them but my jaw dropped to the floor when I saw the prices. I mean are you kidding? These things are not rocket science. They're standard PP plastic just like every other car on the road, but because they're for a Porsche, the cost is 3 times as much. Welcome to the Club, as they say.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  2 роки тому +1

      It depends. Sometimes OEM parts are worth it, sometimes not. We had not heard the OEM for the radiators were not good, so we opted for an racing after market brand. However, the suspension parts were worth oem. It just depends. Do your research on the forums if in doubt.

  • @robfrost1
    @robfrost1 2 роки тому

    While you're in there it's helpful to replace that top radiator hose, if it's not already new. Its aluminium end fitting usually corrodes around now and starts to develop a leak. Pricey, though, at about a hundred dollars.

    Nice tutorial! Any worries that when the heat dissipates, it’ll shrink and exert tension which might over time produce stress cracks in the underlying structure?

    Franny despite instructions to the contrary it did seem to go on like the factory part. I do wonder if you would have had the same installation issues with the OEM part? Regardless, the front end looks great now. Cheers.

    Heat gun FTW for sure. I'd have broken something trying to pry it into place. Do you find that a lot of non-Porsche parts require a little more work like having to drill holes, stretching this into place, etc.?

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  2 роки тому

      Yes, totally... I almost always buy the actual Porsche part but I'm this case the aftermarket is easy cheaper and this is such a sacrificial part. But, it was a little bit of a pain but actually not that bad. But anything important 💯 go with three Porsche part :)

    Your taking a big risk with the ceramics not using the 2 guide pins to install/remove the wheels.
    They should be in the frunk.
    Only takes a bounce of the wheel onto the rotor and your 4k down!

      We told you the story. Had it been me, I would have 'fessed up' about it. I did not do the initial damage. We bought the car in 2014 as a ten year old car. It was owned by a salesman who put a LOT of mileage on it. However, there have also been several times when the car has bottomed out by going over speed bumps or weird driveways that did not improve the issue of the broken spoiler. It was broken when we got it, but it did not improve with driving the last seven years. If you want to see damage done to a car, I did damage our MINI Cooper's door and Franny has a paint video on it. Yep, we are far from perfect. Heidi
