Most fans over the age of 10 know it's scripted so it always amuses me when non fans think they're blowing your mind when they tell you it's "fake". It's like theatre. Theatre where massive dudes smack the shit out of eachother.
Those smartypants "blowing your mind" with the fakeness reveal often miss an obvious fact : it's less tedious and really easyer to smack the gob of your opponent than it is to bluff your fight without hurting your opponent AND selling it. It requires higher technique and finesse to roll each punchs, synchronise movements in order to soften a "hard" fall or not be cruched by a power bomb or a piledriver. The obvious statement to oppose to " it's fake" is : " The performance is real and the entertainment too."
It still blew my mind when my bf who is a hardcore MMA fan told me they were staged. I always thought wrestling was a real sport but now I’m starting to get into it because of all the fantastic storylines :)
@@madmoonrabbit Exactly. Wrestling used to be easy to sell because the wrestlers were either legit fighters pretending or they were pretenders who knew enough about real fighting to "fake it." And with bigger guys it was easy to mask some of that stuff. Goldberg flattening someone with a spear looked just as real as Kurt Angle trying to break someone's ankle. Nowadays these performers do a bunch of goofy shit and then grab a headlock and "rest" with it.
@@madmoonrabbit Could you point me in the direction where this is not a performance requiring technique, stamina and a huge amount of work. As i said it's a perfomance. Even scripted it's a performance requiring two ( or more) people to work together without hurting themself ( badly enough to quit on medical leave or worse). Also, Wrestling is traditionnally grappling with occasional slap contest. The primary goal is not to KO your oponent the fastest. If you follow that route, i wonder if you watch action movies and enjoy them ...
So true...while the story may be fake, there's nothing fake about a wrestler pile driving his opponent from the top of the cage 20 ft in the air during a cage match, that's honest and NOT fake!
some think its completely fake but imagine throwing yourself around, falling off ladders and getting hit in the back with legit steel chairs some of this stuff is next to impossible to do safely
The choreography of the Golden Lovers was legitimately talented and beautiful, god. That final fight could be turned into a show in itself, man oh man. I actually got tears with him using "that move."
Kenny Omega is a masterful story teller. Look up his rivalry with Kazuchika Okada, its the stuff of legends. Or if you prefer western style which involves more talking and building up tension through speech, take a look at Macho man and Miss Elisabeth. Or the tale of the undertaker. Or shawn michaels vs ric flair. Theres so much to be explored
It's just amazing when you're a kid and think it's all real. Then, after the realisation it gets boring. And after the NEXT realisation, when you start to see whats all behind the show and what the athletes have to endure... it gets amazing again.
@sheepysnowtato824 Yeah, it is similar to magic in that way. The entertainment and appreciation stops being about the thing itself and more about the skill of the performers.
If you are curious about where the golden lovers and Bullet Club go from here, here is a little summery. The story is amazing and does not end there, it will continue as wrestling is like one long anime that never ends, currently there is a war going on within the bullet club with two sides, Team Kenny Omega and team Cody Rhodes and now with the reunion of the golden lovers, the bullet club war has become more tragic as Kenny is reunited with Kota Ibushi but the brothers who still care for kenny are being left in the dark and in the middle of this war. ua-cam.com/video/u_hA03k1AOk/v-deo.html ^^ This is a link to a recent match of the golden lovers having to fight two of Kenny Omegas best friends and brothers he has known for years and it is a great match but can be a sad and hard match to watch at times as its tragic seeing former brothers having to go to war. Bullet Club also have their own youtube channel of funny skits that have now turned into dark and tense continuations of the continuation of the Bullet Club war. The Bullet Club war seems to be coming to a boiling point on April 7th at ROH Supercard of Honor with Cody facing Kenny Omega in a one on one match, this seems to be where it will all conclude but we will never really know as it is hard to predict. If you want to catch up quickly on whats been going on to the lead of up to this, watch the episodes of Being the Elite from episode 90 onwards to 99 which should be posted on Monday. This is to get a better understanding on whats going on roughly in a short format. Link is bellow ua-cam.com/video/q08Ik2tiE2k/v-deo.html
TheGamerMaldito same I’ve never cared about it. I still don’t think I will get into the sport but this video helped open my eyes to why someone would. It’s essentially the same as me loving anime. Yes, it’s not real but, that doesn’t matter it’s the narrative. Once again eyepatch you out did yourself again. Thank you for another top notch and well researched video.
😂 i feel.your pain bro! I dont understand it either. I think it is just proof that we are very social creatures and at the end of the day we just want to have that one person to confide end.
I did too. I'm over here playing with legos with my daughter and I had to take a moment to compose myself. If the cliffnotes version could get to me this bad, I don't even wanna know how deep in the feels I would be watching the whole saga.
It’s been 3 years since this video was posted, and it’s been three years since I got obsessed with wrestling. Thank you so much for introducing me to one of my passions!!
Its still going, thats the beautiful thing about wrestling, it never ends its one long narrative with multiple stories going on at once that change over time.
And there's even more bits to it, like Kenny's friends (who are also fan favorites) in Bullet Club being jealous of Ibushi, leading to an amazingly emotional match (Golden Lovers vs Young Bucks) Cody - the one who attacked Ibushi and then Kenny before Ibushi made the save - trying to take over Bullet Club and turn everyone against each other. Jay White, being there as a Young Lion (or a trainee seen on the left at 24:56) at the start of it, to being the person who kicked off the down fall of Kenny's leadership Bullet Club (26:29). The original members of the bullet club watching the chaos between the newer members likely biding their time before striking themselves. And that's just parts! This storyline is so entertaining and heartwrenching.
one thing that I say as a wrestling fan is that it is pretty bloody anime, like it could very easily be a shonen anime and I often view it as if I were an anime (just it's a mix of real and kayfabe like the video describes)
duude I'm watching this in the living room hoping as hell nobody would bust out from their rooms and catch my eyes glistening like a bitch watching a video about wrestling
Holy shit! When I hear it narrated back to me The Golden Lovers’ story arc sounds like Naruto and Sasuke. Just with Naruto as the one who goes to the dark side instead. - Innate talent vs hard work - One feels he’s being left behind by the other because the other is rising in power and fame - After significant losses, he leaves his friend and joins a dark organisation/faction - he gains so much power with his faction that he even turns on his master/leader (AJ vs Orochimaru) - he has to be brought back to the good side (after a time skip) once that faction is dead or has abandoned him - Once together again, the two revolutionise the world in which they are a part of
Talented pure guy and bitter guy who had to work for everything sounds more like Goku/Vegeta to me. Except the return to the dark side for Vegeta was brief and solo. Not with a team.
I know the video came 3 years ago but for those who are interested, The Golden Lovers Saga is still not over in 2021 : The reunion shown in this video took place early 2018 and shortly after, Omega and Ibushi started a fight with two particular members of Bullet Club : The Young Bucks. Young Bucks are twins who are very close to Omega and they felt that Omega betrayed them for Ibushi, so they had a 2vs2 fight which was incredibly emotional and during the match, Omega was torn between his friendship towards Ibushi and Young Bucks. At the end, Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi won the match and everyone realised at the end that all the conflict wasn't worth and that everyone could co-exist together. So after the match Kenny,Ibushi and the Bucks formed "The Golden Elite" a group based on Omega's friends. But... not everyone liked that, remember that everyone was still part of the Bullet Club, a group of supposed merciless and disrespectful group of outsiders who were sick of this "friendship bullsh*t" and then a civil war started between The O.G Bullet Club and the Golden Elite. The O.G Bullet Club thought that the Golden Elite didn't belong anymore in the Bullet Club. But then in 2019 something happened in real life : A billionaire named Tony Khan with the help of Cody Rhodes wanted to start his own wrestling company named AEW, so they recruited top-tier talents like Chris Jericho, Omega, the Bucks and many more... But not Ibushi... Kenny Omega was IWGP World heavyweight champion at the time so he had to lose his title before coming to AEW. Ibushi stayed in NJPW and Omega left to AEW... With the two separated, they went back to solo and Ibushi was one of the fan favorite to win the G1 Climax of the year 2019. But the interesting thing is that every time that Ibushi wins a match and adress the NJPW crowd, he kept saying the same thing over and over : "I won't quit, I won't lose, I won't abandon you." You can CLEARLY see that this has a subtext, and that this sentence is a message send indirectly to Kenny Omega. You can feel that Ibushi felt deeply betrayed by Omega who signed in another company and that he cared about him way more that he will ever admit. At the same time, Omega indirectly showed that he moved on and that the Golden Lovers is over. Now that they are in different companies, nothing big happened between Omega and Ibushi, they both became World Champions of their own companies (even if Ibushi eventually lost his championship). But sometimes, you can still feel that they care about each other by using each other moves. We are in 2021, Golden Lovers are separated, Omega is in America, Ibushi is in Japan. COVID makes it difficult to reunite the team, but we, wrestling fans still hope that the two will meet each other in the ring again. Are they still friends ? How is Ibushi feeling about Omega now ? We don't really know. The story is still evolving and I can't wait for the two to be reunited again. EDIT : July 13th 2023 They just announced, they will reunite next week ! 😭😭😭
You're missing one sad and important element. Kota would have come. When Kenny spoke to Kota about AEW before it began Kota told him that he had things he still wanted to accomplish in NJPW. Kenny took that as the end of the conversation and didn't bring it up again. A year later Kota was asked about it by a fan and he told the fan "He never asked me to come, if he had asked I would have come".
You're right, I didn't know the time I was writing the comment. It is quite interesting to see it again because right now October 2022, Omega and Ibushi are both suspended by their own companies and they both took the time to see each other again. It was quite wholesome.
The more you think about it, the more you slowly realize modern day wrestling is closer to a shōnen anime than a sport. Wolf really hit that point on the head. Good job mate.
Wrestling Fanatic Bernkastel I would say mid 80s the 70s were all about blood baths and making fights look as real as possible so main offense was really just stiff punches
Legit man tears at the end of the golden lovers story. I didn’t even watch it happen over the years. I watched a guy with a magical voice tell me about it online and i was more invested in it than some shows I’ve been watching since my childhood.
And the best part it is that he didn't even the young bucks' equally tight connection to Kenny and how all of that played out .And also the little detail of the greatest series of matches in wrestling history the tetralogy of Okada and Omega
I love how in a channel, so smart and diverse already, talking from silent hill 2, to what makes a hero good, to samurai jack, you go even further out of your already established fan base. You talk about something you enjoy, and as you said in the opening “it isn’t for everybody.” But you did it because you want too, and I love that, thank you super eyepatch wolf, thank you.
The best part is, he makes such good videos, that his fans are willing to listen to whatever he talks about, even if they're not actually interested in the subject matter, which in turn, might end up actually making them interested by the end of it :P
I'm not surprised someone into shonen anime is into wrestling. They're basically the same thing structurally. With more open terminology to describe it.
When you can trick wrestling fans, who know it's all fake, into thinking that something might be real, or at least, give them that second of doubt, those are the moments I love wrestling.
The Miz on Talking Smack is a perfect example. So many people couldn’t tell if his promo was a shoot, work, or a work-shoot, cause he sounded and looked so angry and emotional.
Didn’t expect to come out of this crying for a sport I’ve never watched and two people I’ve never seen, but the Golden Lovers’ story made me shed tears.
The storylines are really powerful, it's a narrative. It's a shame I can't get into the actual matches though - half the time they just stand around and do nothing, and that kinda destroys it for me. Then again, I guess it's the equivalent of whole DBZ episodes just being verbal taunting?
@@umbaupause Depends on the performer and the company. I can recommend some faster paced matches. Storytelling matches however tend to be slower so you can watch the narrative develop without it feeling overwhelming. Wrestling matches come in all paces though. Think of different wrestling styles as different genres. The variety often gets overlooked.
I literally cryed while listening to Golden Lovers's story. I barely knew about wrestling and I wasn't a fan, but I think I'll become one. Also the fact that it's fake actually gives me some relief because all that violence is not as unhealthy and critique as it could be if this was real battle. And this is so beautiful.
Well no most of the moves that won't just straight up kill you are real and actually preformed, but most other things are scripted. That's the key word to gain the respect of so many wrestling fans: "Scripted"
actually some spots are seriously painful and the worst part is when people are trying to hurt opponents on purpose as a form of punishment, which is seriously messed up. i think the best wrestling is from japan which is much different than american. definitely try it out!
@@peoplelegend8476 exactly that's what amazes me! You have to have much more skill to do smth on purpose than by mistake. I mean... I think u got it. 😂
@@vladagherman3255 Yeah, the amount of precision it takes to make sure not to injure your opponent or yourself with just about every single move you use is unbelievable!
Well not exactly anime, i like to call it man-opera. It's a form of art. It's drama, comedy, action in one. And also there are some pretty good looking female wrestlers. It's unlike anything else. IT'S WRESTLING!
I remember being a child and being completely captivated by Pro Wrestling whenever my grandpa turned it on. He always got scolded for exposing me to such violence at a young age but I remember I wasn’t captivated because of the violence. Even as a child I felt the emotions portrayed to me but I just couldn’t comprehend why I loved it much less communicate that to my family. Thank you papa for secretly letting me watch and I’m sorry I didn’t know how to stand up for you when you were scolded
The best thing about the golden lovers storyline is that there's aspects of it that didn't even get mentioned here in this video. Like their reunion being the thing that pushed Omega to finally being able to best Okada and win the IWGP Heavyweight championship, or that as heartbreaking as it was, the time away from Ibushi was necessary for Omega to catch up, as he just couldn't do so as he was. Or of course that its re-established both Ibushi and Omega as visionaries out to make wrestling better, but now at a time where they actively can achieve that. Nevermind that in terms of both character work and technical ability, the two are arguably the greatest wrestlers of this era, if not all time, or that they're breaking ground in a historically very homophobic business. Its a beautiful storyline from start to finish and possibly the greatest one i'll ever see in my time as a wrestling fan, which culminated, of course, in the greatest match i've ever seen, Okada vs Omega 4.
I never understood why the fact that wrestling isn't real automatically makes it bad, people say "if you want to watch a fight go watch UFC" those people clearly don't understand people don't watch wrestling for a real fight, everyone knows it's not real, we enjoy it for the performance, the art form. Movies and TV series aren't real and they are considered art, why not wrestling?
I have to agree. Not going to lie, I cannot watch wrestling. I AM that MMA/UFC/Pride/WEC/K-1/etc. fan, lol. Thing is, you are correct; its clearly a narrative being played out through the wrasslers, in the ring. Anyone that says they dont recognize that is flat out lying and just not wanting to be honest with themself. So respect to wrestling. You guys do you!
And what's worse is when some people saw the competitive wrestling, they're quick to dismiss it as boring hugging contest. It's like wrestling can't catch a break just because it's not as beautiful as kung fu
@AGASTHYA I feel ya, my dude. And I 100% agree. People are just too fucking fake in their criticisms and the way they represent themselves when it comes to shit like wrestling. I mean, yeah, there is a rehearsed aspect to it. Just like theres a rehearsed aspect to every single thing that is on network or non-network TV, full stop. I don't understand why folks can't just STFU with their "Wrasslin is fake" shit and let the fans be fans. Much love from America, Stay healthy and stay safe :D
@@antokarman2064 yeah and they fail to recognize that wrestlers actually get injured for real. Undertaker has had surgeries on almost every damn bone in his body and Jeff Hardy and Mick Foley are something else as well but non wrestling fans pretend that everything around wrestlers is made of styrofoam and they never actually get injured
It's not that it makes it bad, it's that people are confused by the pointlessness of why you would slow, fake fight between giant men who are terrible actors wearing spirit Halloween masks. These videos are well done, but wrestling itself to people who aren't born into it is like, an assault on dignity and intelligence. It's dudes who look like a bunch of hams in kneepads stomping as a dude in work boots punches his own hand four inches from their head. The fighting being fake isn't the issue, it's that it's so fake that it's not entertaining
I worked security at the WWE performance center for 6 months. I met all the wrestlers and even chatted with them all together. It’s a show yes…. But the sense of community between them was fascinating and very positive.
The Golden Lovers story line/saga has been one of the most touching and emotional story lines I've seen in recent memory in pro wrestling. It's definitely in my top 5. Its up there with when Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth reunited, I remember seeing that as a kid and CRIED my eyes out and cried myself to sleep. It was such a touching moment for me because I was fatherless and just wished that my parents could have reunited like that, so it was speaking to me in that way.
At the start I was wondering if you were going to mention the Edge/Lita/Matt Hardy storyline as an example of blurring the lines, would have been cool; but regardless, love this video!
Ptaku93 Lita and Matt Hardy were couple back in early 2000s. But Lita cheated on Matt with Edge (Adam Copeland). Matt was fired following his post in the internet (or some sort) about the cheating. However, since WWE has found potential money making from this scandal, hired Matt back, and turned the affair into a canon storyline. This is an example of a real world event turned into a WWE feud.
Hating wrestling "because it's fake" is more due to a misunderstanding of what it's meant to be. As this video points out, if you confuse wrestling for a "competition" or "sport" then it would make sense to hate it. It would be angering to find out that the World Cup/Olympics/High school basketball/etc. (competitions) are all scripted with predetermined outcomes. You have to understand it's fake and get into the wrestlers as characters to enjoy it.
There's only ever been two things that have made me cry in wrestling, the first was MJF outpouring to CM Punk during their rivalry only to use it as a trap when I so desperately wanted some shred of good to be inside of the former, and your retelling of the Golden Lovers' arc.
Kenny Omega's a huge fucking weeb, I wouldn't be surprised if he took inspiration. He's done a ton of fighting game supers on people/dolls over the years.
What is truly beautiful about professional wrestling, is how the story just "keeps" on going, evolving and growing organically. Ibushi and Omega are once again separated because of their shared obsession of taking wresling to the next level. They both want to showcase it as the "art form" that they feel it is, they truly want to change the perception of wrestling and they want, no, they *NEED* to elevate "it". And in order to do that each has taken a different path that once again, sets them apart. Omega, with the "armor" of the Elite (following the spirit of the armor that was the Bullet Club) is setting his sights on breaking into north american wresling as an alternative to WWE with AEW bowing to inyect some long needed adrenaline into a scene plagued with complacency and mediocrity. Ibushi, after a long storied career of "freelancing" for different companies in Japan, has finally settled down in New Japan Pro Wrestling, swearing loyalty to them, as it is his belief that New Japan *is* the best place for him to showcase and expand the brand of Wrestling that he wants the world to know. In many ways it feels like he wants to finish what Omega was trying to accomplish in New Japan. How and when will they be reunited again? Who knows, what is sure thought, is that is going to be fascinating to see unfold.
Hope at Wrestle Kingdom 2022 to have Omega as AEW Champ and Ibudhi as the Challenger in a over ocean match (that AEW need to do to call their title properly "World title")
I saw this clip of Kenny talking abt how even though Ibushi would’ve gone to America w/ him if he asked, he couldn’t ask him to do it knowing what Ibushi wanted to do in Japan. He sounded so emotional & genuine, it really broke my heart.
Ain’t gonna lie I cried when the Golden Lovers reunited. The other times I cried was when Shawn Michaels superkicked Ric Flair, and when the Brother Rhodes hugged after their match. Idk why but those moments hit hard.
Because it's a really good story, and SuperEyePatchWolf is easily one of the best storytellers on UA-cam. At least, that's why I'm crying over a wrestling documentary.
I've literally never been into wrestling and yet I've been binging your wrestling videos. man I CRIED when the golden lovers embraced and I will do it again
At the end, when I heard you were starting the Golden Lovers story I screamed in excitement. It was my favourite story arc of all wrestling because it’s so beautiful and powerful. (Huh, where are all of the 110 likes coming from?)
Another form of entertainment that constantly gets dismissed as "fake" is magic aka illusion. Like wrestling, it can be done well or poorly. The best magicians take the audience on a journey instead of just making them feel like their intelligence is being insulted. One of the oldest tricks is called "Snowstorm in China", where an illusionist holds a ball of wet paper in his fist, fans it from underneath, and pieces of confetti fly up instead. It's very small scale and can pretty much be performed in a birthday party. Yet magician David Copperfield turned it into the finale of his record-breaking Broadway show in the mid-90s. He did so by simply adding a key ingredient: dramatic context. Before performing the trick, he tells the audience a story from his childhood about seeing snowfall for the very first time. He used ice instead of confetti, then switches out w/ a child actor on stage to complete the narrative of an adult revisiting his youth. Which is something that many people can relate to. Accompanied by James Newton Howard's score from The Prince of Tides, the illusion renamed as "Snow" never fails to earn a standing ovation.
@@Ballin4Vengeance well person are actually involved fighting each other like other shounen anime. Not like sex dolls fighting for their masters in Jojo.
You wanna talk long-running story arcs? 1 word for you bro: Chikara. This is a wrestling company that takes its inspiration from superhero comics, and as such it's had story arcs and story elements that can be traced back to the very first season of the show! And I'm not just talking feuds or traumatic backstories or character development. I'm talking magical mind-controlling amulets, secret moves that are only taught to the good-guy wrestlers, genetically-enhanced super soldiers, paramilitary mercenary groups, a wrestler who legit murders other wrestlers in the ring, Lovecraftian demonic possession, mad scientists, shadowy megacorporations, a 'this isn't even my final form!' moment in the ring, and probably one of the most ambitious wrestling storylines ever: The company pretended to shut down for an entire year. And they committed to this big time. In the last show before this they had security members (who were actually the aforementioned mercenary group) storm the show, destroy the ring and kick out the audience. They shut down the website, cancelled all future announced shows, said they were putting equipment up for sale, and the wrestlers all went to other companies, or started their own mini-shows. Then over time all these mini shows were shut down as various evil-wrestlers from Chikara stormed their shows and attacked the wrestlers. Then at a big charity wrestling event, all the evil wrestlers attacked in one huge group, leading to a massive brawl between pretty much the entire roster, which the good guys won with the help of a time-travelling band-geek, leading to them announcing the triumphant return of Chikara. And did it pay off? Well, the first show they did after this was the largest show they have ever done (a company that usually draws a couple hundred for their audience, drew over a thousand), so I'm gonna say... yeah.
Also Chikara featured a 'Loser Leaves The Present' match where the loser had to go back through a time portal to their own time between a time traveling Knight and a later version of the same Knight who were feuding over the friendship of a dragon called Dragon Dragon.
@@berserkerciaran They have a paid streaming and on-demand service on their website with all their old episodes right back to their beginning, and they're on IWTV as well.

Iron Shiek famously hated pretty much everyone in the business except "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan (which is hilarious as they were in-ring sworn enemies) and Bruno Sammartino, both of which were close friends of his.
The awesome thing about the golden lovers story is that there's still a lot of details left for you to be explored like the nuances of the Kenny vs Cody feud ,Kenny's relationship with the young bucks ,Ibushi's shenanigans when he went freelance from 2015 to 2017, and the Okada vs Omega trilogy which resulted in what many consider as the greatest matches in recorded wrestling history.
Golden Lovers is the best thing going on right now. But there are more great stuff about wrestling. What i love about it is that there is something for everyone. There is a lot of diffrent companies and each has it's own style. You just got to find what you like and watch it.
issa osama that’s the great thing about wrestling and rumours are both of them are Bi so there is a genuine love between them even further blurring the lines between fiction and reality
Kenny Omega commented on it recently “If LGBT people can identify with our story, if they think ‘the Golden Lovers are my team,’ I’m good with that. It’s the story of two wrestlers who shared dreams on their way up, who became fast friends, who are now reuniting at the top of their game.”
Wow I don’t know why but the golden lovers literally deserve a godamn award for the story they put on. I mean just seeing clips and having someone narrate the story has me extremely engrossed in the story. I mean it was like a genius plot of some action movie, amazing work by both of them.
25 year of my existence I've thought professional wrestling was the dumbest thing on the planet and yet here I am crying like a little baby over these Golden Lovers I've never even heard of until 30 minutes ago.... WHAT JUST HAPPENED? LIKE WHAT IS THIS EMOTION?

@@hassannawaz6033 I think Kenny is just gonna snap in general also I don't think Hangman is the villain even after last night because if you look he had a broken mirror with no scars on his fist and a black eye I think FTR are the villains and setup Hangman (possibly even gave him that black eye) because they want to get the tag win in order to have Young Bucks work their way back up this time without Kenny or Hangman or even the Elite as a whole since Cody is dead in the water currently and then one of the tag teams will win (FTR or Young Bucks) thus proving once and for all they are the best in the business.
As a wrestling fan who has absolutely no other friends/acquaintances who like or respect wrestling, thank you so much for making this!! I will be showing people this, you can explain it all so much better than me.
The whole "wrestling is fake, so it's bad" line of thinking never made any sense to me. It's like watching the play Hamlet and getting upset when you find out that the actors aren't really dead.
I've never been a fan, personally, but that's just me. I hate when people act like it's a dumb thing to be into, just because it's not real. I think it's really dumb and childish to put people down for what people like, especially for such a random and insignificant reason.
It's moreso the fact wrestling presents itself as real, and people either don't see the point in watching it since it's all show or they find something else to like about it.
It kind of _has_ to pretend that it's real, because it makes it so much easier to suspend disbelief that way. Personally, I feel like it's the same as any other show or film not reminding the audience that what they're watching is fake, but I can see how other people would disagree with that. I mean, I'm totally fine with someone disliking it because it's not their thing (obviously, as it's not actually my thing, either), but I think it's a bit silly to get hung up on that point *exclusively,* you know?
The Unreal Story of Professional Wrestling said it best: We're not Romans throwing people to lions. Let's take some solace that we prefer our violent modern day gladiator matches to be make believe.
@@Ticketman99 No dude that's not the point. We the wrestling fans prefer watching wrestling. We want to escape from pure reality by immersing ourselves in a world of stories called "Wrestling." We want to invest in storylines and characters because they entertain us and they touch our emotions. Coliseum fights back in the days of the Roman Empire are just pure carnage and bloodshed with little to no creative storylines behind those fights. Ancient gladiators just fucking fight and kill each other. And the modern-day combat sports such as MMA, Boxing, Kickboxing, and etc. don't really have the magic that wrestling has because wrestling tends to have more creative storylines than combat sports. Also, wrestling allows us to see crazy spots such as AJ Styles doing a 450 splash to Dean Ambrose through a table, Moxley performing a suplex on Omega through a bed of barbed-wire, Mick Foley being thrown off the steel cage and onto the announce table by The Undertaker, and etc. Meanwhile, combat sports can sometimes get boring especially when you just see actual fighters humping each other on the ground and/or moving around the cage/ring without throwing that much strikes. The thing is, wrestling fans prefer watching the magic of wrestling as it allows them to immerse themselves in wonderful and multi-layered fantasies that combat sports obviously don't have. They prefer seeing matches that are driven by unique stories and creative characterization. They want to be able to sort of connect to the wrestlers and feel their stories.

Man I did not give a single crap about pro wrestling before watching this but that story of the Golden Lovers really sucked me in. This was a really great vid man and it changed everything I used to think about this sport, good stuff.
Man u should 'v see the Decay Arch that was int TNA with a trio of demon wrestlers ! that was freaking awesome with "cutscenes" in a underworld and every thing
Thank you so much for sharing why you love wrestling. A big part of my live streams is teaching people about wrestling and helping people get into it. It's always really nice to see someone else who isn't ashamed of loving wrestling.
I couldn't help but notice your comment and thought I'd reach out! I use to watch wrestling as a kid, but as I've grown up I've become much more interested in Japanese Wrestling, it just looks so overblown and fantastical. Since you say you help people get into it, how would you recommend I start? :)
Sure! If it's specifically Japanese wrestling you want to get into, NJPW is likely the promotion you'd be most interested in. I think that I'd need some feedback from some of my community on where they think you should start though, I've never had someone specifically request to be shown how to get into the Japanese stuff. Part of me wants to just send you a Wrestle Kingdom event (Kinda like Japan's Wrestlemania) but it might be too many new names too fast. Why don't you swing by the wrestling section of my Discord server sometime? I should have it linked in the description of all of my new videos!
Don't watch anymore but I am a former fan who watches occasionally and man was this a good 30 minutes actually brought me to tears thanks for reminding me of what I once loved about wrestling maybe I'll actually start watching some more
Come back man, Wrestlemania is near, Styles-Nakamura is main event, NXT is lit, and NJPW is a whole new world to be discovered and fascinated with. Wrestling is such in a good spot rn.
As a wrestling fan, I’ve heard too many times that” wrestling is fake. I only watch real sports” or something about UFC. The best way I can put it is, would you rather watch a fencing match or Obi Wan vs anikan in a lightsaber fight? There’s a huge distinction in that one is 2 professionals trying to best each other. The other is 2 larger than life characters we’ve grown to know fighting it out with a whole story behind them. The best of wrestling is the emotion fueled stories in matches
that’s the best analogy, i’m stealing it! and really, i don’t watch mma because pointless violence doesn’t interest me. wrestling isn’t about the violence; it uses the violence as a vehicle to tell stories. and that’s what makes it special.
it’s more like would you rather watch obi wan vs anakin (real sports) where you don’t know what’s going to happen and they’re actually attempting to beat each other, or 2 buff guys with no acting skills whatsoever hit each other with fake swords after they both do a shitty 20 minute monologue plus it has a pre determined outcome? (pro wrestling)
@@kylorl3 Well no that makes no sense because obi wan Vs anakin is scripted too; The outcome is predetermined, but like a movie or a show, the fans don't know the outcome while they're watching it. And i'd say they're pretty good at acting considering the millions of fans entertained by their personas. Yeah most probably wouldn't do good in a movie or musical, but bring a stage actor to wrestling and I'm sure they'd suck to wrestling fans. It's it's own art form, not trying to be a "real sport", no need to be a weird snob about it.
@@MomoWax1000 a stage actor would suck at wrestling you are extremely correct, just like wrestlers suck at acting. and yes a movie is predetermined, but it actually has skilled actors, different sets, different camera angles and shots. pro wrestling lacks skilled acting, different sets, and good camera work. whether or not millions of people are entertained by it has nothing to do with whether it’s good acting or not. The Rock is undeniably a shitty actor yet he’s the richest actor in Hollywood b cause he’s entertaining and charismatic. there’s nothing wrong with pro wrestling, just don’t act as if it’s some quality top tier entertainment. part of the reason why it’s fun to watch is because it’s so terrible and cheesy.
Galador No they do suffer major blood loss, look up what happened to Eddie Guerrero after he bladed to deep and bled to the point he literally went into shock.
It's plain to see Mangs has excellent taste in youtube creator channels ;) But yeah, I had a low opinion of wrestling before this video, but that didn't stop me from welling up at GOLDEN LOVERS ;__;

Maybe wrestling is in some kind of uncanny valley that causes reject from some people. It is fake but looks more real than the other fake things out there so because there is not the distance required to state "well, this is obviously fiction" it might create in some people the need to try to rationalize it and reject it after trying to pinpoint so hard moments when it obviously looks fake to reassure themselves and because their focus is so much on trying to see obvious fake moments they can't enjoy the ride like someone noticing every technical problem in a movie instead of immersing oneself into the story.
I just think it’s weird in wrestling that people have pretend personas and pretend to fight another guy as if it was real in front of an audience. And yes that could be applied to movies but I think wrestling is a weird format to tell a story. I don’t get what’s entertaining about it if you’re an adult.
Even tho you're not a wrestling fan you should watch some highlights from the best matches in 2017 and 2018 i suggest Kenny Omega vs WWE' Chris Jericho and AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura those matches will make you, a fan and Shinsuke vs AJ will make you hyped for wrestlemania this sunday.
I had a realization about this topic just last weekend. Was hanging with a friend of mine with his 8 year old kid. They both love wrestling. I wasn’t allowed to watch it as a kid, so I never ‘got’ it. Just kinda chalked it up to a ‘the bachelor, but for dudes’ kinda thing: ‘reality’ tv or what have you. Then I watched his kid. The kid didn’t care about the over the top violence, he cared about the story: specifically, the good Vs evil, right vs wrong, stuff. The old myth stuff that’s as old as time. And then it clicked. This was Star Wars without the science fiction cloak, and done live: Over the top villains, noble heroes, reverses, betrayals, triumphs etc. It’s a hook to pin your emotions on, a a modern morality play. No different than Luke Vs Vader any other good vs evil tale with mythic connotations and over the top (and patently ridiculous to non fans) sensibilities. It’s not about plausibility. It’s a silly, fun, morality play with live action sports thrown in. The Logan Paul walked out (who I strongly dislike)… and you know what, a part of me woke up and wanted the good guy to win too, right along with my friends kid. I get it. Good vid.
Most fans over the age of 10 know it's scripted so it always amuses me when non fans think they're blowing your mind when they tell you it's "fake".
It's like theatre. Theatre where massive dudes smack the shit out of eachother.
The live action anime, that doesn't butcher the source material

^^
This is a link to a recent match of the golden lovers having to fight two of Kenny Omegas best friends and brothers he has known for years and it is a great match but can be a sad and hard match to watch at times as its tragic seeing former brothers having to go to war.

And there's even more bits to it, like Kenny's friends (who are also fan favorites) in Bullet Club being jealous of Ibushi, leading to an amazingly emotional match (Golden Lovers vs Young Bucks)
Cody - the one who attacked Ibushi and then Kenny before Ibushi made the save - trying to take over Bullet Club and turn everyone against each other.

Holy shit! When I hear it narrated back to me The Golden Lovers’ story arc sounds like Naruto and Sasuke. Just with Naruto as the one who goes to the dark side instead.
- Innate talent vs hard work
- One feels he’s being left behind by the other because the other is rising in power and fame
- After significant losses, he leaves his friend and joins a dark organisation/faction
- he gains so much power with his faction that he even turns on his master/leader (AJ vs Orochimaru)
- he has to be brought back to the good side (after a time skip) once that faction is dead or has abandoned him
- Once together again, the two revolutionise the world in which they are a part of
Talented pure guy and bitter guy who had to work for everything sounds more like Goku/Vegeta to me. Except the return to the dark side for Vegeta was brief and solo. Not with a team.
I know the video came 3 years ago but for those who are interested, The Golden Lovers Saga is still not over in 2021 :
The reunion shown in this video took place early 2018 and shortly after, Omega and Ibushi started a fight with two particular members of Bullet Club : The Young Bucks.
But then in 2019 something happened in real life :
A billionaire named Tony Khan with the help of Cody Rhodes wanted to start his own wrestling company named AEW, so they recruited top-tier talents like Chris Jericho, Omega, the Bucks and many more...
But the interesting thing is that every time that Ibushi wins a match and adress the NJPW crowd, he kept saying the same thing over and over : "I won't quit, I won't lose, I won't abandon you."
You can CLEARLY see that this has a subtext, and that this sentence is a message send indirectly to Kenny Omega.
I hope they fight each other for one last time and finish this saga.
The Young Bucks are not twins. Matt is 4 years older.
You're right, I didn't know the time I was writing the comment. It is quite interesting to see it again because right now October 2022, Omega and Ibushi are both suspended by their own companies and they both took the time to see each other again. It was quite wholesome.
oh yes i am sure the golden “lovers” are really good “friends” 🤭🌈
The more you think about it, the more you slowly realize modern day wrestling is closer to a shōnen anime than a sport. Wolf really hit that point on the head. Good job mate.

So you are telling me... Wrestling is serious meta real life anime before all those things were cool?
Andres Arancio exactly.
In a sense, yes. Wrestling fans were weebs before weebs were a thing.
Dude. That story at the end had me in tears. You have a masterful storyelling ability.
Much love from America,
Stay healthy and stay safe :D
Could you please tell this story or at least provide sauces for further reading?
That was great, thanks Lagamzer.
Kento Bento I love your channel
Ptaku93 Lita and Matt Hardy were couple back in early 2000s. But Lita cheated on Matt with Edge (Adam Copeland). Matt was fired following his post in the internet (or some sort) about the cheating. However, since WWE has found potential money making from this scandal, hired Matt back, and turned the affair into a canon storyline. This is an example of a real world event turned into a WWE feud.
@18boweraf3 Yeah, that's the money making he's talking about.
In all honesty (to me at least) hating wrestling "because it's fake" is kinda unfair if your a movie or tv lover.
Basically it the same thing as a movie but with different format of storytelling.
@@vlo4829 Then you get people like Lance Storm who keep saying "pro wrestling is a sport".
What now?

There's only ever been two things that have made me cry in wrestling, the first was MJF outpouring to CM Punk during their rivalry only to use it as a trap when I so desperately wanted some shred of good to be inside of the former, and your retelling of the Golden Lovers' arc.

I know that when they reunite again I will cry like a baby.
Hope at Wrestle Kingdom 2022 to have Omega as AEW Champ and Ibudhi as the Challenger in a over ocean match (that AEW need to do to call their title properly "World title")
Thank you for that info💆♂️

Easily my favorite illusion of all time. I love the way kiki tay builds it up. Kevin james also does it amazingly.

Well, the first show they did after this was the largest show they have ever done (a company that usually draws a couple hundred for their audience, drew over a thousand), so I'm gonna say... yeah.
Eddie Kingston as the realest man in pro wrestling being stuck in this universe is the funniest and also the best thing to ever happen.
Also Chikara featured a 'Loser Leaves The Present' match where the loser had to go back through a time portal to their own time between a time traveling Knight and a later version of the same Knight who were feuding over the friendship of a dragon called Dragon Dragon.
Is there a site to stream past Chikara stuff?

Loser's Club Wrestling is weird, but when it's good it's fucking awesome
I've never been a fan, personally, but that's just me. I hate when people act like it's a dumb thing to be into, just because it's not real. I think it's really dumb and childish to put people down for what people like, especially for such a random and insignificant reason.
It's because it's presented like a real sport
Wrestling is basically a shakesperian play with epic fight scenes and story arcs happening in real time.
The Unreal Story of Professional Wrestling said it best: We're not Romans throwing people to lions. Let's take some solace that we prefer our violent modern day gladiator matches to be make believe.
Then WHY THE FUCK would you EVER believe that your "gladiators" are legitimately better fighters than ACTUAL FIGHTERS?!

@@bunhead4040 I’m glad you liked it
it’s more like would you rather watch obi wan vs anakin (real sports) where you don’t know what’s going to happen and they’re actually attempting to beat each other, or 2 buff guys with no acting skills whatsoever hit each other with fake swords after they both do a shitty 20 minute monologue plus it has a pre determined outcome?
Dude...it's hard to explain wrestling to people, but you just did it with ease, I'm jealous
Honestly the fact that wrestling is fake, makes it 900x more appealing to me
Ivy Ridenhour Same. I just feel more comfortable knowing the people are most likely gonna be all right and not suffer mayor blood and teeth loss
Galador No they do suffer major blood loss, look up what happened to Eddie Guerrero after he bladed to deep and bled to the point he literally went into shock.
Varg Vikernes yeah that was back then, you‘re right. That stuff happens very rarely tho
Galador That's an extreme case, yes but they're still bleeding. And it wasn't rare in ECW, and still isn't in CZW
Varg Vikernes czw aint wrestling for me
This video resonates with me so much I can still hear the reverberations in my head.
Mangs oh shit you’re a wrestling fan Mangs?
It's plain to see Mangs has excellent taste in youtube creator channels ;)
But yeah, I had a low opinion of wrestling before this video, but that didn't stop me from welling up at GOLDEN LOVERS ;__;
oh man i didnt expect mangs here
Mangs might be a fan of Super Eyepatch Wolf? Good taste, Mangs.
Mangs plays WWF: Smackdown 2 when ?
This is one of the most heart-felt videos I've ever seen.
John you took something I've always despised and made me care about wrestling for 30min.
For just a moment... I got It.
Keep up the good work.
This video perfectly encapsulates pro wrestling and why I love it. At its root it is storytelling and the development of both people and characters.
True
wtf this ibushi story is anime of the decade
Koome Kimathi honestly though. Wrestling is the best anime
Me: I like dbz it has unrealistic fantasy fights and has no goal whatsoever outside of pure fun.
Society: completely acceptable

Society:NO!
In india you don't even get to like dbz
both actually have a goal, telling a story and being entartaining.
I just think it’s weird in wrestling that people have pretend personas and pretend to fight another guy as if it was real in front of an audience. And yes that could be applied to movies but I think wrestling is a weird format to tell a story. I don’t get what’s entertaining about it if you’re an adult.
We live in a society

As a non-wrestling fan, this video is incredible.
Or just get a person who helps you with highlights
Even tho you're not a wrestling fan you should watch some highlights from the best matches in 2017 and 2018
i suggest Kenny Omega vs WWE' Chris Jericho and AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura those matches will make you, a fan and Shinsuke vs AJ will make you hyped for wrestlemania this sunday.
I watched this video a little over 3 full days ago now. I have done pretty much nothing but watch wrestling videos since then. 😂😂😂
emrysaki welcome
emrysaki I take back what I said about the wrestlemania match it fucking sucked
I get it. Good vid.
