One potentially interesting fact I want to point out: Miro Haverinen, creator of the game, made the beta version of the game as a part of his communicational sciences degree's master's thesis. He then analyzed the reception he got using scientific methods and finished the game based on the data. And got a master's degree diploma on the side.
Fun fact. When talking about knight only being good in combat while mercenary can open doors for free you might not know but the knights ability leg sweep automatically destroyes any door. That's because leg sweep automatically destroyes the legs of the opponent and for some God forsaken reason the doors in this game are coded as legs.
sounds like a typical game developer workaround. like a vehicle being classed as a hat and having an npc running beneath the ground to make a train move in fallout 3. or how any prop of a certain size is considered a tree in roller coaster tycoon for memory reasons. i'm willing to bet the door in this case is a problem of the RPG maker engine and the limb system. there is no general damage type, so when hitting something with no limbs, a random arbitrary limb type is chosen by the developer or it defaults to a certain type of damage out of a lack of better options. edit: apparently all glados voice lines in the first portal is delivered by a cube placed outside of the map. if these cubes disappear somehow, her dialogue stops. have heard other game dev stories on twitter that i haven't verified as well, such as there being no horse AI in X game, so when you dismount, an invisible NPC will hijack the horse and steer it away. stuff like that
Thanks for the video coverage and high words! You do raise some good questions too. The game isn't without flaws and it is up to debate whether all content was handled with good taste or not. I do have reasonings for many of the things but ultimately art is in the eye of the beholder and it's up to people to interpret these things the way they see fit. All I can say is that none of the things were made with ill intents, even if that might sound hard to believe considering all the filth this game has to offer. Again thanks for the video, made my day! :D
Yoooooo! Fear & Hunger is more than a game. It really feels like an exploration of violence and the unknown. I love the amount of work put into the mythos. Only respect from me 🙌
You're being generous; don't take everything to heart Miro. Your game isn't above criticism, but it was also seriously mischaracterized here in a few things. Not once during my multiple playthroughs did I ever believe you were making allegories to any real life tribe people. Oh well
@@FoldingTeaLeaves ah no, I might not agree with every take here 100%, but I can see where he's coming from. It's never wrong to raise questions, so it's all good. Besides it does make sense for a larger youtuber to approach F&H with more caution and critical eye. Eyepatchwolf didn't have to make a video of the game but he did, and one with a lot of praise too. Based on some of the comments I saw, people are getting way too hung up on the indigenous talk. It was just one topic in the video and eyepatchwolf's take on the thing.
I need to point out that the knocking sound after a game over is the sound of a heartbeat through an echocardiogram. It honestly threw me when I heard it because I've gotten echos done yearly since childhood, and I instantly felt like I was in the doctor's office again.
"We got a divorce." A phrase of weakness, implies your fault, vague. "Marriage was defeated." Powerful and ominous, implies a great battle, mysterious.
@@themostdiabolicalhater5986 Wonderful false equivalence there. I missed a word, sure. Your point? Doesn't make my point any less valid. Funny that you felt the need to point out an error instead of providing a logical counter argument. Ah right. You don't have one.
Well I've played it for quite a bit now and I can tell you it's not *that* disturbing. If you're not particularly sensitive I think it's definitely worth experiencing
@@ant-mf6kl That's the thing! It's not that I can't play it for more personal reasons - I just don't like resource management games :( They stress me out to the point that it's not enjoyable. If F&H wasn't so rooted in resource management, I would have bought it the second the video ended hehe
@@palinurus oh! I got good news for you then! If you play on the "easier" difficulty, which I believe is meant specifically for people who don't really want to deal with the resource management that much, your characters' hunger meter is much more lenient and you don't need to strategically manage torches to navigate the dark. I haven't really had to worry about resource management at all just by opening crates and barrels. It's worth giving a look! I recommend watching the beginning hour of cdawg's vlog on it to see how much recourse management there is since he plays on that difficulty too.
For anyone reading this later, disregard what I said. I was not as far into the game as I thought I was. You still need torches if you don't want to go insane and actually use spells and my food is running out so I'm forced to take the shortest possible routes sometimes taking on unnecessary fights to save time and resources. This game even on the easiest difficulty has stressful resource management I think. Worrying about so many things literally makes me physically tired playing this haha
38:30 You know, now that I know that the Escape ending of _Fear and Hunger_ involves your characters being so traumatized by the dungeons that they're never really sure they really did make it out, the fact that Wolf says he got that ending right before describing thinking he was done with the game and then quickly gettting sucked back in is a hilarious parallel. That was probably intentional.
@@Knuckl_Sssrovitc if you walk back to that area, she’ll rejoin the party. Then you need to raise her mind to 50 or more, using alcohol or opium if you have the pipe to smoke it with. She should be able to continue after that.
Never given that topic attention before but the quote really does remind me just how helpless people in berserk are considering almost everyone is just a normal human and you'd have to have peak world class skills or have magic (or have Puck near you) to even think of surviving horrors like Gut's aftermath in which a bunch of devil spawn came for him
I like the uncommon death scenes. Like having your skin eaten by the lizardman and then crawling around for a bit untill you die. Or losing both your arms to a guard and then getting hit by mad rush resulting in you not being able to move when you get thrown in the corpse pit, leaving only the choice of "quit breathing" and "hold on". Holding on does literally nothing.
in all fairness the mode he starts on is technically a harder mode, you can start on “Fear and Hunger” which is the default mode which allows your character to be illuminated even without torches (you’ll still lose sanity) and some challenges are easier. By no means is the game even on this mode at all easy, but I have no clue why this guy insists you need to start on what is essentially a hard mode
The creator of the game (Miro Haverinen) actually wrote a thesis about the game for his finnish university studies. First part of the abstract reads: "The purpose of this thesis is to study the thematics of horror in videogames, then create a videogame based on the results, with as oppressive and frightening atmosphere as possible." The text is in finnish, it can be found with the title of the thesis: "Kauhun tematiikka videopeleissä : Tapaus Fear & Hunger"
Brings the joke of "happiest nation in earth" to whole new level, when this is creation from there. Absolutely fitting when people are happy, normal RPG, but in reality its hidden suffering and horror, that takes lots of effort to bring to light. Also making whole master peace of a game for university thesis is rather absurd amount of work top of the original research, specially with this much content on it...
Eyepatch Wolf: “Necromancy does nothing” Me starting my 1572th play through with Dark Priest and his best friend Mr. Bones: “It’s time for yet another wild ride!”
Helpful tips/trivia for those thinking about playing or for future eyepatch playthroughs. - SE-Wolf does not properly stress that there is a LOT of nudity and sexual violence in this game, so either get the 'clean' mod or use discretion if you'd rather not be exposed to such dark subject matter. - All characters can learn dash, you can obtain it in character select with the right prologue dialogue choices. Dash is probably the best skill in the game due to getting the ability to outrun monsters consistently. - Most Beds you can save at will have zero risks (No flip) if you eliminate all enemies in that area or eliminate the crow mauler in the case of the crow's bed. For example, killing all enemies and Trortur in the screen that you encounter him on ensures you can save there infinitely. - Spells are more likely to land a headshot than melee attacks. - Damage over time abilities like poison are incredibly powerful against tanky enemies like bosses. - SE-Wolf still hasn't encountered the final boss, there's multiple endings for you to discover (or die several times trying). - Le'garde is not required to be alive for you to get a lot of aformentioned endings. - Some enemy body parts, especially heads, have comically low hp, fragile enough that say... even a child with a small knife might make short work of it... - All 'Coinflip' attacks can be fully blocked when your main character guards. No flip required. Some monsters, like the 'guard' are guaranteed to use them at certain intervals. This can be exploited to cheese the ogre guards without taking hits. - Going for a headshot while an enemy has functioning limbs is risky, a lot of them like the guards can still hit you before they die. Post-death attacks are thankfully removed in the sequel. - The text crawl in the bottom corner often conveys critical information or vague hints or warnings, pay attention to it, examples include warning about the Crow Mauler entering the floor, or in battle it may hint a coinflip attack is coming. - Most information the game gives you, even random lore snippets, have in game implications. Especially when it concerns the gods of the game's universe. Paying attention to details that may sometimes seem innocuous at first can yield great rewards, or even save you from making a deadly decision. - I strongly recommend Fear and Hunger's sequel: Termina, it's a vast improvement, more consistent, less buggy.
The initial release of this video did address the sexual violence and even the bunny mask orgy scene and how much it both appealed to and disturbed him. Unfortunately, UA-cam disapproved. But yeah, that was a major critique he made.
@@RaikoTheSaikou It's got some references and expanded lore and callbacks but I'd say that no, you do not need any knowledge from F&H to play Termina, and inversely, Termina does not spoil any plot-critical events of the first F&H. Both games take place in wildly different time periods with a different roster of characters. I do consider Termina a vastly superior game to the first, but the first can definitely add some enjoyment value just from having more lore context. Edit: Termina currently does have... a bit less sexually disturbing content, but it still warrants a warning either way.
It's about surviving against a hostile universe, about getting back up when you're down, gritting your teeth and overcoming the insurmountable. There's comfort in that. ❤
Fear and hunger is like if you were in Berserk, but you are not part of the main cast of characters in it, but side characters instead with little powers to get you through the hellscape ahead of you.
It is pretty much a Berserk-adjacent sort of world. One of the characters tied to the true ending is almost literally Griffith and has the same motives and destiny.
Nobody tell him he could've just saved at a bed Also nobody tell him that if you clear out all the enemies in a room you can save without having to worry about a coin toss cause no enemy appears if you fail.
@videobob92 also nobody tell him that you can get the most powerful weapon in the game if you go to the mines where there's a sword embedded in stone that kills you if you pull it out, but instead of dying you can read the 'Passages of Mahabre' book immediately after you pull out the sword to teleport away briefly, allowing you to escape death and claim the weapon. Also, definitely don't tell him you can "curse" that same weapon at the skill altar for about 4 soul stones, giving it even more power with literally zero drawbacks.
It is fantastic that, even with this 1 hour video that barely covers 20% of what John played, there is A LOT more that John doesn't know about the game.
For anyone who needs it, there's an alternate solution to the ogre problem. Attack the cleaver arm, then the stinger, block, then hit the torso until it goes down and you'll take 0 damage
Me and my friend played this game knowing it has similar themes to berserk but not knowing the full extent of it's brutality, we named our first character after a friend of ours and needless to say we were horrified and stopped naming characters after people we know
@@CerealExperimentsMizukiand theres me naming my characters after my classmates and losing literally every coin tosses in game idk if this is me with luck issues or some kind of curse
For anyone curious, the cabin/hut mentioned right after the harvestman part is where you encounter the skin granny. You can look it up yourself if you know the details
The worst part is that I don't even think the enemy he lost to at the very end is the actual final boss. Looking at the wiki shows that there are several more unique encounters after the Sylvian
@@wolfmoonens3378 If you want to find out for yourself, the game awaits you. But if you want to hear it outright... Well... On the path that Super Eyepatch Wolf travelled, the player defeated Francois without Le'garde surviving, so Le'garde did not ascend to the Void. In doing so, only you ascend. And if you somehow make it past Sylvian's "Traces" (did you really think you could stand a chance against an ACTUAL Old God?), you would encounter an echo of your character, who asks you how you will rule as a New God. And thus, you become a New God. You become the same kind of chump that your party defeated in Ma'havre. The same kind of limited, mortal DEMIgod that inevitably got dethroned by new aspirants. Betel was dethroned by Nas'hrah, and in turn got dethroned (and beheaded) by Valtiel, who in turn got his brains bashed in by you. The cycle of seeking power, a pseudo-divine game of thrones, will continue, and eventually someone's gonna descend into the dungeons, make pilgrimage to the city of the gods, and tear you apart in pursuit of ascension, leaving you to languish in the Great Hall where all defeated New Gods reside, powerless as they are. Technically escaping the dungeons (Ending E) is the "worst" ending, especially if Le'garde is dead by the time you find him. But if you bring Le'garde to Ma'havre, and he survives the fight with Francois (which you can kinda cheese if you know what to say to him), HE will ascend, and you'll be able to pursue him into the Void. If you survive the Void, and make it past Sylvian's "Traces" (you don't have to fight her if you play on Normal), you find Le'garde, except this isn't quite Le'garde anymore. You can confront this xanthous monarch and put an end to their ambitions, or you can kneel before them, and accept that maybe they will escape this cycle of ascension and deicide. For while each New God embodied a certain quality, like torment, enlightenment, endlessness, domination, etc, Le'garde embodied all four of the above. And while he might not quite attain the heights of the Old Gods themselves, he might have surpassed the demigods stuck in their sad little game of thrones. And yet, this isn't the "best" ending. For that, one must go DEEPER. One must seek the growths of that which the dungeon itself was built around, then dive into the mouth of something that will swallow them whole, with no hope of escape. That is the path to Endings A and B, though one of them requires you to escort someone into the very depths of the bowels of this beast. If you reach the bottom without them, well... That's for you to find out for yourself... ...but do you really want to?
@GmodPlusWoW Thank you for this. That cliffhanger knowing theres even more that hasnt been scratched in discussion os what will get me to buy this game.
The fact that Slyvian (the green boss he was fighting near the end) isn't even the final boss makes me sad, but I hope he finds out that when you are in the void(the green level) you're party members are spread out and you can find them. Also, ignore the dinosaur and hide
I think one of the coolest things about it is that this is a damn RPGMaker game. I've seen so many games that re-use the stock assets, SFX, and basic Final Fantasy style mechanics. This game is so transformative and deep compared to the average title. It's just really inspiring to see what people create with sufficient tools.
I go around playing random RPGM games and I found F&H Termina by chance and was shocked by how good it was. I couldnt get it out of my head for a month.
It's also a shame how limited it is because its an rpg maker and it shows. But I guess said limitation helped the developer create loopholes for creativity. Lmao the dev said he couldn't figure out how to have reflections for party members on mirrors so he just dumped some lore that you can only see yourself. This was on FH 2.
Eyepatch Wolf hating the Dark Priest, then him becoming his favorite character after witnessing love making and gaining a new character called Marriage, all while his wife leaves him in the background, is exactly the relationship development I want to see.
For anyone starting this game for the first time, I'd recommend not picking Terror and Starvation as your difficulty, and instead stick with Fear and Hunger. The difficulty he chooses changes things in ways that are intended to catch people off guard that have already played through the game. In other words, Terror and Starvation is best suited for your 2nd playthrough when you've gotten used to it.
Just clicked on the video and im laughing my ass off realising somebody actually picked the hard difficulty as their first play-through for a Fear and Hunger game
Imo it is sometimes way better to experience a game like this... xcom games are better played ironman imo... bg3 was way more enjoyable to play on honor mode for me (if I had played it on tactician first I would have likely not liked the game nearly as much)
i've aways thought that this game lets you play in the world of berserk but as one of those background characters that get to say nothing and just die by the hundreds and somehow you have to figure it out
I think the main menu being the haunting knocking sound is genius. It’s probably related to the phrase “knocking on death’s door”. The distant knocking sound while in the dungeon could symbolise that you are about to enter the main menu ie, about to die
yeah it makes sense , since it technically symbolizes FAILURE or DEATH which means the further deep you are in means that you are straying away further from the Death but getting closer to the Truth.
I used to think that the sounds of the rock was actually souls getting eaten. Makes it even creepier, you die repeatedly for a great ending and try to uncover mysteries feeding them your soul as a price
I can't believe a week later you have sent me down a miserable rabbit hole. I know so much lore about this game. I think about this game constantly. I am hyperfixated. I know the entire story of both games. I know the character's names. I know their backstories. I know their wants, their dreams, their despairs. You have cursed me, Super Eyepatch Wolf. What have you done to me.
I have never touched this game, probably never will unless I'm feeling particularly masochistic, but yeah something about this from its Berserk inspiration, to the vaguely roguelike element, and the sorrowful Gothic aura around it all, is just so captivating. It's the kind of series where no matter how many spoilers I see, if I ever inevitably take a dip, I will have my own unique campaign.
I bought the game on Steam to support the dev. Now, I will probably never muster up the courage to play through it; but I live vicariously through Connor and Super Eyepatch Wolf.
F&H videos two years ago: "Here's how this unfair game plunges you into a living nightmare with no escape" F&H videos today: "Here's how the game's spaghetti code lets you win the game by whacking enemies with a raw hotdog"
Yeah but if you really want to play the game why ruin it with exploits? I get it if you have already played it thru multiple times and just want to have fun
The thing about F&H is that, once you know what you're doing, the game is actually very straightforward and simple. There are plenty of opportunities to flat out break the game once you know how to do so. If you know how, you can set your character up so you can reach one of the endings in under ten minutes. The trick is just learning how to do it.
Yup! He really undersells it despite saying that the most valuable currency in F&H is knowledge. Getting somebody to go into it blindly in earnest is a good way to test both patience, and an aptitude for learning and adaptation.
@Ariel Sanguinet Talking about a game someone already talked about doesn't make one of the videos a rip-off. Also, 3 months' time gap is a pretty big difference
This was a hell of an adventure to watch. Thank you for making this video! Edit: Apparently the boss that ended your run at the end is NOT the end of the game. There's. Still. More.
It actually depends. On the ending he was getting, that actually would have been the final boss. There's a similar ending where there's another boss immediately after, though.

Nope. That is true in a way. Gut's goal isn't to destroy all evil but Revenge, He couldn't care less about a village getting burned down. He would go there to look for clues for Grifith though but He isn't essentially a kind character, that's due to his childhood from being raised with the bandits. He's a broken character. the Outlander just like Guts, has his goal as revenge to Kill the person who destroyed his village. But he has Panapobhia here (Actual lore) he has Fear of EVERYTHING. He with his Dog Moon decided at the end to kill all the monsters because the only way for his FEAR of EVERYTHING to disappear is to destroy everything that he fears. Thus he becomes the God of Ultra Violence because he will destroy everything. He ascended into a God leaving his Dog behind.

@@LeafyPeach I could go on and on about how much I love the way the game handles that. (Spoiler warning) . . . . . . The game perpetually punishes you for doing the right thing and then constantly gives you an out - it's way better for your party not to save the girl, it's good for your character to give her to Pocketcat for the Claymore, it's great for your party to give her to the Lady of the Moon for a full restoration. But you choose not to do any of those things because they're wrong. The lore talks about how the dungeons corrupt people and turn them evil and as a player you have to actually constantly make the choice to resist that. And then you get to the heart of darkness and fight the God of Fear and Hunger, she recognizes that you showed her kindness. Your character didn't show her kindness, YOU, the player, showed her kindness by toughing out all the disadvantages to saving her. It's beautiful and I love it

Gamers will see titles called shit like "the worst time you'll ever have playing a video game" and be like: "can' wait to spend my free time playing this masterpiece"
I feel like many of us nowadays will hear about these, become fascinated to learn more, but not enough to experience it for themselves, and seek out videos like these. Worm Girl made some relatively complete summaries about the plot of the games, but even her hour-long summaries aren't totally complete. She's also done two 8-hour podcasts talking about background lore with Frapollo, a player who's gone pretty deep into the gameplay side of things.
Two things I've also noticed about this game: 1. This is an RPGmaker game, which given the depth and intrigue that it produces using many of the kits tools is extremely impressive. 2. Not only is this a survival horror game, but also one built on cosmic horror. This is not only present from the designs or the unspeakable horrors that increasingly turn more abstract the deeper you go, the Eldridge gods you face, but also in the overall structure, that being that knowledge and a desire to know can lead to madness. Your character descends into the dungeon to find out what happened to Lagarde, already starting your quest with the pursuit of knowledge. When you find Lagarde, after both you and he have experienced the unimaginable horrors present in what you only later realise is the upper levels of the dungeon, he wants to keep going down, desiring to know what is further in. Most people would consider this madness, and it kind of is, but as a player, you also want to know and don't have a fear of death like the characters in the game. And even in a single run, your characters degrade, needing constant mental care to keep going, seeming like a representation of madness that is present when trying to find the bottom of this dungeon. And it is a madness that you as a player seem to mirror, as you gather knowledge through repeated runs just to get deeper, only to be met with challenges that require further knowledge. This makes each extra trick, each piece of understanding of the world feel forbidden and dangerous, as it is knowledge that only leads to further horrors. This is a core element of cosmic horror, that a character knowing more about the horrors only lead to madness or doom. An element that is baked into the core of Fear and Hunger, from its story to it's basic gameplay loop.
I love stories that start out as conventional horror but slowly becomes more eldritch and cosmic in nature. Bloodborne is an example I know, but I also understand there's a ton more than people would recommend
@pointblank2890 frankly I believe that's the best way to do Eldritch horror, the surface is unpleasant but still bearable. But humanities intrinsic desire to know more leads to one discovering deeper worse truths. Because it leads to two outcomes, stopping and turning back once you have seen too much but still sane and able to get away, with a nagging feeling that you only faced the surface and there more or scarred from what you did witness and terrified of what else there is. Or the second option continue on to you doom, finding more and more until in the maw of madness or changed to the point that even the audience.
Proud to say that after many tries I finally reached Fear & Hunger's ending! On the lowest difficulty. Using Mercenary with Dash and after performing Marriage. It was Ending C, the second easiest ending after D (Ending E doesn't count). I didn't even defeat Crow Mauler. BUT the little girl got out of the dungeon alive! Without both of her hands.
@@PSYMEDIC SPOILER No you can definitely get her out of the dungeon if you manage to keep her alive till the end of the run, except for HER ending of course
I only got ending E before coming back to finish the remaining 40 minutes of this video and as a married dark priest with a half dead knight and the crow key, I'm so fucking ready to actually finish this game now.
The part of Fear and Hunger that catches you off guard is how to progress you need to merge with the dungeon. All those repulsive, rotting, infernal things, you need to understand and master. And more you understand, more does the dungeon change you. Eating moldy bread, to mauling the remains of the imprisoned people, joining the bunnies, the marriage.. You think you stop at nothing, then use demon seed! Deeper, deeper, you descend, degrade, deform... you keep returning deeper into dungeon, because once you step in, there IS no way you can ever go back.
Madness... It is not the rejection of reality. Rather, it is the adoption of another, and the neglect of the former. -- Darkest Dungeon sounding quote I made up on the spot inspired by this video and your comment.
It's really punishing and if you didn't look it up no one could blame you for thinking that he was just supposed to die. Hell, he even admits he allowed himself to get captured, what a madlad.
The 30 minute timer isnt actually that bad if you what you are doing, the game is very fast paced when you know what to do and with all the shortcuts, you can get to him without worrying. The only time its really a problem is if you dont know how to reach him or you dont use the shortcuts, which makes it harder
or a DM who has seen you pull off some bullshit and decided to make everything exponentially more difficult than the other campaigns where you abused cloud of daggers in a small room and locked the doors
This could easily be a amazing specialty/custom one off campaign A dark fantasy survival horror with enemies and encounters that make you use your environment and the tools given to you as much as your own skill sets. Make the enemies always at least slightly harder than the party could normally handle and hand select characters for players at random. You could also easily ad a coin flip system for many of the same things making players flip real coins as they would roll dice. I could even make it intentionally easy to die but not too long to beat, meaning the group of players had a nightly run Games like this always end up being the best experiences for a party. I’d save this as a challenge for a veteran party in between larger games or sessions.
I realized a bit later that he never mentioned each character has a different motivation for being there. They all involve the captured guy, but for different reasons. The knight doesn’t believe he deserted his post and is a loyal follower who is trying to rescue/help him with whatever he was there for. The mercenary was not paid after working for him and is there to steal whatever treasure the captured guy was after, because why else would anyone go to this place? The outlander wants to murder him for having burned down his home city and killed his family years ago. And the dark priest is there to steal the guy’s attempt to become a messiah and return religion to worship of the old primordial gods. The captured guy himself heard a prophecy, went ‘that must be me. I must become the new embodiment of god and unite all peoples’ and then got his entire knight order to renegade, join him in the quest and get slaughtered/horribly mutated by the dungeon before failing.
@@rawlenyanzi6686 Iirc what happened is that the story resembled Berserk coincidentally during development, but when pointed out, the dev began intentionally making references and similarities.

I've been trying to find a decent Let's Play of this, but none of them have quite been what I'm after. I like the idea of watching someone go in fairly blind, but not so blind that it feels aimless and frustrating to watch.

One of the most cruel grotesque games about eldritch gods, medieval Europe and a dark secret that lies behind the dungeon walls that can only be uncovered by hours of sacrifice, sweat and tears... And your reward for all those nightmares is a Dating Sim game mode (not a joke) Crow Mauler best girl
Therefore, it should also be approached with the mindset of "thats just the recommended level, not the required" and use whatever trick you can find to cheese the hell out of every scenario.
Little present for people who still struggle with guards (spoilers): T1 - Chop off left arm T2 - Guard (automatically passes coin flip) T3 - Chop off knob T4 - Chop off leg (or go for head) T5 - Guard coin flip T6 - Chop other leg (or head) T7 - Chop off head Don't chop off both arms because then he does the Tackle attack. With only the right arm he can do no attacks other than the coin flip which he does regularly every third turn after T2. xoxo
Yessir, by far the best way to fight them. Be warned though if you play on terror and starvation, you may not be able to deal enough damage to cut off their sword arm in one turn depending on your character and gear.
Can’t decide where would be worse to live: 1. The dungeon in “Hunger and Fear.” 2. Underground in “I have no mouth and I just scream” as a sixth survivor 3. Or LISA: The Painful (as a woman).
personally i think the underground is the worst. cuz u can technically escape the dungeons, you can cope a bit in Lisa. but AM is ruthless. once you get stuck as AMs punching bag there is no getting out.
Absoultly the underground, the other two options have some way to at least cope with, but with AM there's nothing you can do, you'll be his punching bag until the sun explodes or maybe even if he somehow stops working, but then you're still lefr with nothing, no food, no water, in a radioactive waste land, I guess you can at the very least kill yourself then...
Guard Encounter Strategy Turn 1: Cut off cleaver arm Turn 2: Take Guard Action (Guarding nullifies the guard's coin flip attacks) Turn 3: Remove “Stinger” Once you have done that series of attacks the guard is a sitting duck. They can only use their coin flip attack every third turn after turn 2. Whatever you do, do not cut off the last arm, otherwise they’ll start doing a tackle every round that does decent damage
When I think of hard games, I think of games where you're dying constantly. But what makes this game compelling is that you don't actually die that much - you're just constantly on the VERGE of dying. Like it's wild that the fact that you can reach 0 HP and still survive is actually a horrifying thing rather than a good thing
What I like about this game is how realistic it is. It discourages fighting since many of them can result in your characters losing their limbs which is almost game ending. You can even have a stroke of bad luck and step on a rusty nail which can also be game ending if you can't cure the infection in time.
Shes secretly one of the best party members if you know what to give her. Also, pretty coincidental that a few NPCs want her. I bet it bears no relationship to an ending whatsoever.
Dark Priest starting with Necromancy and chilling with the skellybros is always a good time, but D'arce is always my favorite starting character since she can learn Leg Sweep early, meaning she can instantly kill all doors for just 20 Mind, including the door that is normally unlocked by the Crow Key, granting the Miasma sword in the first 5 minutes of the game. All this because, for some reason, doors are legs.
Unless you plan on using Le Garde, then Miasma is useless to you as it will kill your party members. Best using it early on till you activate first check with it in lower levels. Blue sin is better if you can find the teleportation book.
@@ExtremeMan10 Just give Miasma to a skeleton, zero problem. Or, you know, just monitor your sanity properly and get a hold of Transmutation or a Sorcerer's Stone. The "Miasma kills your party" thing is way less of a problem than people make it out to be.
@@WuTheBat stress aint issue, there are forced checkpoints in the game that will trigger the event (the cellar one for example) and you want to give miasma to your strongest characters to rock up that damage.
Honestly, DS is really relatable in terms of how dangerous enemies can be and progress being made. As with DS you restart at a bonefire, F&H makes you return to the main menu.
That's only the hardest mode tho. The normal 'Fear and Hunger' mode has 3 safe savespots you can use without coinflipping and once you play F&H for a while you will notice a trap when you encounter one.
God damnit it man. Why do you have to be so charismatic and entertaining in your signature akward yet relatable manner? I have a mid term tommorow. Yet all I have been doing for the last hour is watching fear and hunger lore videos. Why did you do this to me? Anyways genuinely love your content. Dont drive yourself too crazy trying to make us fans happy.
Small correction, All characters (not just the Mercenary) can get Dash. It depends on options you pick during the opening and the other character needs to make 2 choices to get it. As an example, the Knight needs to "run away from the family" and then pick "Rush in".
All of them need to pick two options to gain Dash. Outlander/Ragnvaldr needs to not take any souvenirs from Vinland and rush after Le’garde. Knight/D’arce needs to do what you said. Dark Priest/Enki needs to not get revenge on his sister, and also rush to the dungeons. Mercenary/Cahara IIRC only needs to choose to rush after Le’Garde.
This game has a really weird effect on me. I can't play it because of the difficulty but at the same time I'm in love with the lore and I'm thinking about it all day long. Le'gard character got me because of his similarities with Griffith. What a masterpiece that demostrates that a human brain is the most disgusting and amazing thing in the universe.
Id like to thank you for being the first guy who made me not just a little curious but actually gave me a real taste of how much this game would end up truly consuming my waking throughts as it does now ive begun playing
One thing I didn't see SEW comment on that is also a big part of FH is infection. Basically, in combat and sometimes outside of combat you can get an infected wound on any of your limbs. This comes from pretty obvious sources: A dog bite, a ghoul's dirty nail's scratch, a cut from an unclean blade, stepping on a rusty nail, etc. So, you can get a limb infected, what does that mean? It means that, in a certain a mount of time, you are going to *DIE.* And I don't mean that you're gonna get a slow trickle of damage to your health you can fend off with healing items, I mean that if you don't get rid of the infection, eventually, with it's health intact, your character will get dizzy, fall over, and die. There are 2 ways to get rid of infection: You can find around 3 guaranteed green herbs that cure infection and around 1 or 2 in random boxes. This is *not nearly enough* since most common enemies in the game can give you infection and almost every boss does as well. So, there is the second option which is, of course, to *cut off that limb* which you can do with bonesaws found around the dungeon which are A LOT more common than green herbs. This is yet another source of anxiety and why at least in the beginning when your weapons suck and you're on your own it's a much better idea to run away from every combat. it's simply not worth the risk to get an infection since later on you are gonna have to face unskippable enemies or just enemies you fail to avoid that can cause infection.
I've played the sequel for a little bit but so far that seems to be the case yeah, however in the first 10 minutes or so I found more green herb than I ever did in any run of FH 1 (though this could be because the game is a lot longer) . Since I love this game, I hope I am not scaring you away with my comment, all I'll say is that if you're smart about it you'll eventually develop techniques to stay infection free. In my later completionist runs of FH 1 infection became kind of a non issue.
To me it seems you almost have to play the game like a sleath game rather then a rpg given how many factors can kill you easily and how their so many puzzles.
SEW left out several details, but I think most of them were due to either not wanting the video to be too long-or genuinely not knowing that they are there. In the case of infection management, I suspect that even for this video… it might have been too dark to cover. Not to mention the origin of the lucky paw item. 😱
I appreciate videos like this because this game sounds like something i would NEVER want to play, but it is conceptually fascinating, i like how it takes tropes and turns them on their head. This dude has a skill at really taking you on a journey with these videos
I spent like a month of my life I will never get back suffering through this miserable, evil, vile, beautiful and terrible monstrosity. It's an incredible experience.
@@Drace90 same, videos and comments like this can get me to appreciate the artistry and appeal of a game like this, but I think I’d literally rather die than experience it myself lmao
@@jingusflorpus4274 To put this in context since holy shit this comment exploded. This game is very literally cruel. You will lose whole runs because of a coin flip. It is not for the faint of heart. But it has a habit of sinking its claws into you and it just will not let go. The game is great but it's definitely for an audience.
I love how Fear and Hunger videos can be split into either: - Deep, thought-provoking analysis of a tragic and haunting world Or - Any percentage SA speedruns
I honestly feel like it's best to play this game like a roguelike when starting out. Don't get attached to your characters and spend time just making lots and lots of short term decisions to see what things do to learn as quickly as possible. If you get hung up on a particular run for a long time, you're essentially just save-scumming in a prebaked death spiral.
Pretty much lmao, But once you learn how the game and its world works it becomes a bit more fun, the cicle of starting a run and meeting your end inevitably
In that regard, it reminds me somewhat of Don’t Starve. Both feature a cryptic world that requires trial and error to figure out, and both have hunger as a major mechanic.
This game was made by a finnish person so as a fellow finn i dont know if i should be proud or worried. Also the boss named Salmon snake directly translates to lohikäärme which is the finnish word for dragon.
Be proud - genius can often be seen as derangement. Other than the callous use of SA in it, the game is about as close to brilliance as any single person's project can hope to be. Twisted and deranged, but absolutely genius.
I always hear reports about how Finns are one of the happiest peoples in the world, but then I see Finns developing some of the most melancholy things imaginable
This game's lore is so good that even if you can't make progress in the game, the wiki will more than sustain your curiosity. It's just really interesting, layered stuff.
The wiki is certainly interesting to read but for gameplay they get some stuff wrong. If you are looking for tips on progressing I’d recommend the youtube channel Frapollo
@@Hugsloth 2009's demon's Souls did in fact rehash Berserk (just like fear and hunger does) and the OVA Angel's Egg, and has a way deeper better realized lore, like, in the sense you have to both go out of your way and notice the details in order to figure out the scope of the world. Oh, and it doesn't make a cartoonish depiction of rape and dismemberment! In all honesty, I wish the dude behind fear and hunger had both a good creative director and a writer working with him, he has loads of talent, and that talent is thrown in the dirt on this silent hill berserk fanfic.
Thanks to this video I bit the bullet and bought this game (after some time away from it to forget some of your tips). I currently have Ending E under my belt (I could have gone further but I wanted closure for that run). This game was great. When I started my first run everything made me anxious, especially the Hounds, but the more familiar I got with what I could do and how confidently I could take each stride I pushed back and eventually made it to Le'Garde. I was worried that saving optimized starting loadouts would cheapen the game cuz of the map being set each time, but the deeper I got in the dungeon the more I realized learning the layout is important for beating Le'Garde's timer, and the game has enough RNG where you're still kept on your toes. The tension of your party getting crippled is the next step up from LISA's mechanics and executed in way more effective ways that can't always be optimized out of.
29:50 huh! We had very different take aways from the knocking noise. To me, going through a lack of knocking noise to hearing it quitely, as if in the distance, is a warning that you are approaching death. I quite like your interpretation though, rock on and great video as always!
it sounds to me that the sound design wants to convey that you are so far from everything you know that even death sounds far, and that you are in a place far worse than it.
It's the kind of game I want someone to devise a '100%' run and showing it entirely, preferably on a platform that don't care about all the things Yt or Twitch would need censorship
@@maxentirunosikr I understand why the ytubers who are just now playing it use censor mods but it would kind of just ruins the experience for me if I used censor mods....idk if I sound sick saying this xd

28:15 "But then, out of the chasm-like soundscape rises this ethereal voice that sounds just a little too high to be human" As a soprano, I'm honored to finally achieve my dream of becoming a cryptid
28:55 The amazing thing about sound design (and music in general) is how subjective its message can be. For SEW, hearing that knock again can mean that the place where he started is now very far away. For me, that whole track is a constant reminder that you're only a tiny mistake away from going back into the main menu. And that knock will come back to you in just an instant.
That was the reaction I had - the distant feeling of the tone is more to imply that while death may seem far away, in truth it could come for you at any moment, like the Crow Mauler.
I think that's just the correct interpretation. SEW says it induces a sense of fear because you're afraid to leave that sound behind, but that only works if the sound represents safety. The main menu is what you're constantly trying to avoid, it's synonymous with death. Hearing the knocking would make me feel like the game recognized that fear and is using it to threaten me, saying that I'm not far from being sent back to the menu.
If the game didn’t have a save feature and actually made you restart after every death, that would be a very powerful and impactful interpretation, but since that’s not the case it’s kinda just unfortunately a cool concept with not much weight behind it
As many have said, this just scratches the surface of what you can do in the game, The Kid character that is shown in some clips, is actually integral to many unique events in the game, including an ending or two
If you watched this video and felt like it spoiled the whole game, you're wrong. Theres an even easier, more consistent method of beating guards that this video doesnt mention. Theres still tons to discover yourself.
Thanks for this, loved the look of the game but my exact worry was "I feel like I've spoiled it for myself by watching this now" but it seems that would be a misguided assumption
F&H fans will describe the most soul crushing awfully painful experience ever and say "so yeah this game might be my favourite rpg. Cant wait to play termina"

Wanna know something funny? The glasses don't help you hit the head. Yes, they do make you miss less often. But someone dug into the code, heads have their hit chance coded differently and have a simple percent chance to be hit (I think its like a 40% chance) and the bonus accuracy of the glasses does not affect the calculation. (Which means if you're rendered blind, going for the head might be your best option!) Its like how the defense stat does *literally nothing*. Instead, armors have specific resistances; the Iron Cuirass give +30 def, but in actuality, it reduces slashing damage to 60%, piercing to 80% and blunt to 88%. And some items like the Eastern Perfume just don't do what they say they do.
I just want to say, that I was sold on this game in first five minutes of the video, so I stopped watching. Went and bought the game. Picked Dark Priest just to see how the game compensates your low damage output. Then played blind for about 7 hours only getting an E ending. And what I learned was, you can FIGHT everything. You can even win against everything but the wizard, but the friends you lose along the way aren't worth it. RIP Skully the Skeleton, and Moonless the Wolf. You the real MVPs. PS Damn that damned crow!
technically you can't kill the old gods since they're already dead(the big thing at the end is just a remnant of one) but yeah. aside from that, not really many things left alive if you want. Ps: there's a two headed crow mauler

Your thoughts on "stalker" characters not following the rules of the world and being nearly unstoppable reminds me of a player's impact on the world. Maybe that is why they are so unnerving; we encountering something that is interacting a similar level.
If you ever think about yours actions in games worlds, player characters is a monster. Life devouring puppet of the otherwordly will that don't feel pain and follow every order. I don't feel fear when i play "surivor horror", im happy becouse i finally meet my match.
And he didn't even mention Needles (literally Art the Clown from Terrifier) that stalks you in Termina. I think he's a much more terrifying stalker. Crow Mauler is stronger and has one kill attacks, but Needles chases you relentlessly and even sets up ambushes.
THE NIRVANA REFERENCES OMG. the pregnant one is a reference to the album art of In Utero. The Harvestman is the tall figure on the cover of Incesticide.
A couple tips for people wanting to play the game: 1. All the characters can learn dash, not just the mercenary. You get it based on the choices you make in the intro(for some characters it requires 2 choice combo to get it)It is probably the most useful skill in the game, so I highly recommend it for all characters. Pick choices having to do with running away and rushing straight to the dungeon. 2. All protagonists have access to skills now or later that can make them busted. There is no “best protagonist”, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Even the knight has access to good tools in the late game (leg sweep: there is an exploit that lets you break down any door now matter how much hp it has). 3. The defense stat is virtually worthless since most enemies always do fixed damage with their attacks. Rather Look for armor with resistances or limb loss prevention. Bonus: if your protagonist guards during devastating coin flip attacks, they avoid them entirely. 4. You don’t need a guide for most mechanics in this game other than god affinity and Hexen/skill improvement. There really isn’t a way to learn these things through trial error, so don’t be afraid to look them up. 5. Go into the game with the mindset you are going to die. Don’t make your goal: get to the end. Make your goal: how far can I get with this strat? The game will be better that way.
@@DrRESHES If your bad at the game then enjoy this cheese for a strong start. Slight gameplay Spoilers ahead. When the enemy is about to do a coin flip attack, have your main character guard. It straight up prevents it. Mercenary: get the skills en grade and escape plan. En grade gives you an extra turn at the start of the battle, escape plan gives you 99% flee chance. You can literally go in, destroy a leg, run, run in again, destroy the other leg, run. And u can continue this until thing is dead, and it couldn’t get a single attack on u. The knight: get the skill “leg sweep”. It’s strong on its own, but has a broken feature: it can instantly destroy any door. Including the door to the Miasma sword. You can literally get Miasma the first 10 minutes into the run without ever having to fight crow mauler.
@@jacekstankiewicz1594 Hmmm… odd. Works fine for me. One potentially interesting fact I want to point out:
Miro Haverinen, creator of the game, made the beta version of the game as a part of his communicational sciences degree's master's thesis. He then analyzed the reception he got using scientific methods and finished the game based on the data. And got a master's degree diploma on the side.
He sounds like a smug prick.

what does this mean
@@ghostxfactory17 it means he gained some serious cred from making a game that actually tests your wits as apposed to brute forcing it.
Fun fact. When talking about knight only being good in combat while mercenary can open doors for free you might not know but the knights ability leg sweep automatically destroyes any door. That's because leg sweep automatically destroyes the legs of the opponent and for some God forsaken reason the doors in this game are coded as legs.
The fuck? Good to know
It’s like kicking down the door
sounds like a typical game developer workaround. like a vehicle being classed as a hat and having an npc running beneath the ground to make a train move in fallout 3. or how any prop of a certain size is considered a tree in roller coaster tycoon for memory reasons. i'm willing to bet the door in this case is a problem of the RPG maker engine and the limb system. there is no general damage type, so when hitting something with no limbs, a random arbitrary limb type is chosen by the developer or it defaults to a certain type of damage out of a lack of better options.
edit: apparently all glados voice lines in the first portal is delivered by a cube placed outside of the map. if these cubes disappear somehow, her dialogue stops. have heard other game dev stories on twitter that i haven't verified as well, such as there being no horse AI in X game, so when you dismount, an invisible NPC will hijack the horse and steer it away. stuff like that
“Sweep the leg.”
“You forgot your keys again, didn’t you?”
“Look, do you wanna open this door or not?”
@@sadpee7710 If you kick the door in real life, you end up kicking the bottom of it... the same area where an enemy's legs are.
The creator of the game (Miro Haverinen) actually wrote a thesis about the game for his finnish university studies.
First part of the abstract reads:
"The purpose of this thesis is to study the thematics of horror in videogames, then create a videogame based on the results, with as oppressive and frightening atmosphere as possible."
The text is in finnish, it can be found with the title of the thesis: "Kauhun tematiikka videopeleissä : Tapaus Fear & Hunger"

- I strongly recommend Fear and Hunger's sequel: Termina, it's a vast improvement, more consistent, less buggy.
thanks friend.
The initial release of this video did address the sexual violence and even the bunny mask orgy scene and how much it both appealed to and disturbed him.
Unfortunately, UA-cam disapproved. But yeah, that was a major critique he made.
Is Termina one of those sequels you can play without playing the first one, or should I play Fear and Hunger before playing Termina?
@@RaikoTheSaikou It's got some references and expanded lore and callbacks but I'd say that no, you do not need any knowledge from F&H to play Termina, and inversely, Termina does not spoil any plot-critical events of the first F&H. Both games take place in wildly different time periods with a different roster of characters. I do consider Termina a vastly superior game to the first, but the first can definitely add some enjoyment value just from having more lore context.
Edit: Termina currently does have... a bit less sexually disturbing content, but it still warrants a warning either way.

@@marthedge by god now i need to know why its one of the worst endings
Slyvian is the final for Dark Priest S ending on hard mode though which might be the run he's doing
Just poison the dinosaur with a knife and you'll be fine

It's also a shame how limited it is because its an rpg maker and it shows. But I guess said limitation helped the developer create loopholes for creativity. Lmao the dev said he couldn't figure out how to have reflections for party members on mirrors so he just dumped some lore that you can only see yourself. This was on FH 2.
The tools have always been available, the problem is the lack of creative people that make a game for the passion and not to become a big indy hit.

That is true in a way. Gut's goal isn't to destroy all evil but Revenge, He couldn't care less about a village getting burned down. He would go there to look for clues for Grifith though but He isn't essentially a kind character, that's due to his childhood from being raised with the bandits. He's a broken character.

That's how they had found all the copies of ET for the Atari.
Two things I've also noticed about this game:
Eldritch
I think the monster design is what keeps people interested - there is just an aweful addiction to disturbing pictures and forms

The 30 minute timer isnt actually that bad if you what you are doing, the game is very fast paced when you know what to do and with all the shortcuts, you can get to him without worrying. The only time its really a problem is if you dont know how to reach him or you dont use the shortcuts, which makes it harder
Fear and Hunger is like playing a game of D&D with an absolutely HORRIBLE dungeon master
Or an absolutely amazing, yet incredibly sadistic dungeon master. Depends on your perspective.
or a DM who has seen you pull off some bullshit and decided to make everything exponentially more difficult than the other campaigns where you abused cloud of daggers in a small room and locked the doors
When the DM loved both the Planescape setting and Hellraiser
Or instead of playing D&D you are playing an average game of Mork Borg
This could easily be a amazing specialty/custom one off campaign
A dark fantasy survival horror with enemies and encounters that make you use your environment and the tools given to you as much as your own skill sets.
Make the enemies always at least slightly harder than the party could normally handle and hand select characters for players at random.
You could also easily ad a coin flip system for many of the same things making players flip real coins as they would roll dice.
I could even make it intentionally easy to die but not too long to beat, meaning the group of players had a nightly run
Games like this always end up being the best experiences for a party.
A lot of this looks like it’s inspired by Berserk, to be honest.

What I like about this game is how realistic it is. It discourages fighting since many of them can result in your characters losing their limbs which is almost game ending. You can even have a stroke of bad luck and step on a rusty nail which can also be game ending if you can't cure the infection in time.
Funny thing is, the little girl is the ultimate weapon. You can make her immune to mental issues and over buff her magic.

Is this also how it works in the sequel?
Funnily enough, the enemy with The Plague cannot give you an infection. It says you're infected via flavor text, but does nothing.
SEW left out several details, but I think most of them were due to either not wanting the video to be too long-or genuinely not knowing that they are there. In the case of infection management, I suspect that even for this video… it might have been too dark to cover. Not to mention the origin of the lucky paw item. 😱

Yes, they do make you miss less often. he sarted as "hahahehe fucked up game" before booting and descended into madness really early on. it was cool to see it unedited. the vods are here on yt if you wanna watch
@@bzipoli thanks dude, much appreciated ✨ and thanks for the recommend!! It's such a truly impressive game.
I WILL NEVER PLAY THIS GAME, still i have been binging fear and hunger for 3 or 4 days, I don't know, there's a guy in Brazil that it's so obsessed with this game that he made me appreciate this game a lot, I hope you get better soon bro, life sometimes feels like too much so we can give ourselves some more obscure concepts as a treat. God bless you.
You can make it through man, my dad had the same thing, and he's doing amazing now. You got this
Hope you get better friend ❤
I really love how Fear and Hunger seems to be gaining traction and atention exponentially
Yes, it is about time.
People who enjoyed Pathologic Classic found it and have decided to once again spread their masochistic tendencies to the masses
Termina really helped things along
@@luxill0s anyone know where the masochistic gamers all hang out?
The sequel helped tbh
(Which is much better than fnh 1 tbh)
A couple tips for people wanting to play the game:
The game will be better that way.
what if i just incredibly bad at it ?
@@mythos951 en garde doesnt fucking work for me, real annoying
@@jacekstankiewicz1594 Hmmm… odd. Works fine for me. I know it’s buggy with other characters(I don’t think you can do it with a marriage, even if you have the perk) but it should be working on the mercenary. Your sure your pressing shift while moving, and you unlocked the perk at the hexen(there is no way to get it at the start)? If not, you may have come across a bug that isn’t well known about.
@@mythos951 yeah i have it unlocked i tried pressing once, holding, spamming but it doesnt work
