Today I'm finally taking a look at the highly requested, Joe Schmo. Well one of the many iterations at least. This is the fake reality show where everyone, but one man, are actors. Hilarity ensues! It really is an insane concept for a reality show so sit back and enjoy I guess.

Not saying I'm great at ASL, but from what I can see in the video they are actually signing what they are saying. Which is smart on the off chance that Chase actually knows ASL, he would immediately know if they were making it up.
I do think they’re using actual sign! I can’t quite tell if they’re actually saying in sign what’s being said aloud, or if they’re kinda just arbitrarily signing, though
@@chelmastly5802 Well they aren't signing word for word whats being said. ASL is not spoken in the same way/order as the words are in English. But I do agree that they are actually using real ASL.

The end of Jury Duty with Ronald being like "wait this means I can still get called for jury duty this year!" was such beautiful capper.
Especially because he literally got called for jury duty like 3 weeks after the series aired.

The first season of this show is so different from everything. It started pretty mean spirited, but about halfway through the cast and crew didn’t want to pull off the prank anymore. It turned out to be a great study on how pure hearted the average person can be and I highly recommend it.
It's funny you say that, there's another show that did something like this and they were extremely mean to begin with and then couldn't bring themselves to be so mean later on and ended up being nice but I'll be damned if I can remember if it was a show from here in the UK or if it was an American one I've either seen or just seen reviewed on UA-cam, it's annoying me now lol
there was a really good show we did over here that made a guy think he was literally going into space and they even rigged up a Hollywood-style ship to make it feel to him as though he actually was in space (and even some of the actors were so immersed in it they felt it was amazing and it looked beautiful). They were all so worried about letting him know it wasn't real because he was in such awe and was such a lovely guy and didn't want to let him down, he took it really well though and still thought it was a wonderful experience. Plus he got a good chunk of money which probably helped haha

@@JustinW332 yeah it was tbh, that show about pretending to take that guy in space really didn't go as they expected-i mean he still looked a bit ridiculous in parts of course but then again so did the actors so I reckon that helped, especially as there was a whole lot of "preparation" for getting them into space and the lines between the actors and the guy got pretty blurred because they were all in it together even if the actors had prior knowledge, if that makes sense lol

I took American Sign Language for 4 years and I used to volunteer and work with the deaf community in my area growing up. Both the interpreter and actress are using actual American Sign Language which is incredibly surprising to me.
Also, they definitely could have found a deaf actress or even a hearing actress who is born to deaf parents (which is a common thing). Overall, they definitely could have found someone connected to the deaf community or deaf culture in some way. They also didn't need to do the voice like that; there's varying degrees of deafness and not every deaf person sounds like that.

Tell me why I got a good six minutes into the video before remembering that a bounty hunter and a hitman are not the same thing, I was so confused why anyone would think it would be a good idea to go on reality tv to become a hitman lmfao
I once saw a comedian that was getting heckled (lightly) by a woman in the audience and he started to engage with her but then stopped and asked “are you signing what I’m saying for someone?” And she’s like yes my sister is deaf.. he’s like why are you yelling things at me and not asking me if.. “I know how to sign”in ASL he also had a deaf family
member and did the rest of the show while doing the sign langue
The first season was amazing, can't ever be topped. The guy was very heartfelt in his decisions which caused the crew to make edits on the fly all the time, plus noone knew about the show til it aired so it was all new. After the first season I thought it was too scripted to be honest

The real player came off as likeable and genuine. Plus, it had a pre-famed Kristin Wiig playing one of the contestants. I never watched any seasons but the first. I had no idea it had new season, but they don't look nearly as interesting as the first season.

CHRIS YOU GOTTA WATCH THE FIRST ITERATION! Gunnars watching it rn, and it gets legitimately emotional lmfao. The guy who thinks its real turns out to be such a great guy, everybody genuinely becomes great friends during it its so wholesome in a way. Obviously theres some dicey stuff in it, but overall its just a feel good show lmao

I didn't even know they made a new one. The early 2000s one was cool because they set out to humiliate the guy but he was so darn nice that they changed the entire point of the show half way thru. That was one of the reasons it was such a good show. Plus it has Kristin Wigg, so it's awesome. I hope the original Joe is doing great now. Such a nice dude (a bit horny, but super nice).

I did not realize there were more seasons of Joe Schmo. That first season was wild! I felt so bad for the guy. I still qoute his awkwardly said line "what is going on?".

This is the first time I caught myself thinking, “maybe I’ll watch this show being reviewed”.
This show came out first 20 years ago when I was in college and was absolutely bananas....still one of the craziest reality shows I've ever seen

When I first discovered this channel this show popped onto mind. For a show that kind of goes off the rails a bit more each episode thus season went off the rails too. Can't wait until you get to the first two seasons which were the strongest. I admit I even own season two on DVD...

Llamas was an "action" star back in the 90s-00s. Swords, martial arts, brawling, that kinda stuff..basically i think he got famous bc he looked good, tho his acting was okayyyy, but he was pretty popular for awhile...hell, i didnt even recognize him at first either..lol
All I ever remember seeing him in was that Renegade show in the 90s. My dad watched Walker, Texas Ranger unironically every Saturday so the show was right up his alley and my mom thought he was hot so it was one of the few TV shows they could both somewhat agree on.
Yeah I heard of renegade I recently watch it of youtube it was ok.

The first Joe Schmo was fantastic! The Schmo was actually a sweet guy. Funny enough … Kristin Wiig was one of the actors on the show.

Just to add to everyone else, the original first season is BY FAR the best. It has authenticity. They have to keep scrambling when the Joe was too nice to keep their tricks from working.
The guy was such a sweetheart he'd start standing up for people, defending the 'victims' but I don't know if I've ever laughed so hard in my life when they suggest a way out by having the two cute girls kiss each other at the request of a sleazy producer. Matt immediately agrees with great enthusiasm!

That jerk character was in Super Troopers! Played a fairly prominent role too. I know this was years later but that movie was a pretty big hit, honestly surprised he wasn't spotted immediately.
In the final episode, he told the Schmo that he was in Super Troopers

You’d think but they actually went through many more hours of just normal day to day jury stuff than they did wacky hijinks. What you saw was just the gags they pulled every now and then.
Finding out the guy was from Oregon completely explained him not thinking anything was up, tbh. Plus, I mean, how many times in your life have you dealt with wacky shenanigans without thinking you must be on some reality show?

You should look at Renegade the show. It's from the 90s, Lorenzo plays a bounty hunter with a spiritual Native American partner/friend. I always wondered if it was loosely based on the comic Nomad which he looked just like the main character.
I am genuinely excited that you're gonna take a look at the 1st season. The Joe is probably one of the kindest and most likable people ever on a reality show
He was so great. Which is what makes it even more sad that, if I recall, he went into a depression after the series aired because he felt like he had been made to look like an idiot on national TV. He eventually made peace with it, in large part because he started to realize that fans actually genuinely loved him and no one ever really made fun of him about any of it.

I watched jury duty as it came out, it’s actually a hilarious show. I never saw the original Joe schmo show, but I watched another UA-cam video about it, and it’s honestly a heartwarming story

@Chris James As a (hearing) bilingual raised by Deaf signers, I’m glad you mentioned they could’ve hired a d/Deaf actor! There’s no reason they shouldn’t have. Linguistically… the actors are using sporadic signs that occasionally (somehow) manage to fit the context, and are somewhat “correct” individually (but not grammatically). They certainly aren’t using ASL. 😅 Thanks for the entertaining video!

Ironically, the bounty hunter iteration of the Joe Schmo Show I found way more interesting than the actual bounty hunter reality shows they were based on.
