My father and I have collectively accumulated some three-hundred ties over the years, with many of them being vintage pieces from the '50s and '60s. While he rarely dresses up anymore I wear them almost everyday since I wear a suit and tie on the weekdays. As a result I'll never have to worry about wearing a tired outfit again.
As someone who collects pre-1950s menswear, I was sort of surprised to hear that you don’t wear any wool ties in the summer! Tropical weight wools are one of my preferred choices in warmer months. Botany for example made some absolutely lovely tropical weight wool ties throughout the 30s and 40s. Wish I could post pictures in the comments section!
An excellent video. I've been collecting tie for 3 - 4 years now. I've got about 100. I actually buy them from thrift stores (charity shops in the UK), vintage shops etc for very little money. I like the vintage quality silk, linen wool and blends in all patterns - not too bold, mind. It's a pleasure to find vintage quality ties and I enjoy wearing them knowing it's highly unlikely anyone else will be wearing anything similar! Great collection Raphael - you've been an inspiration to me and I've benefitted for your knowledge and style. Regards Tony
I came across my old school ties in an attic trunk last month, my house tie was dark blue with a white and yellow stripe. We wore stiff detachable collars (the Arundel I seem to remember) I noticed there was still a white stich on the tie blade to tell us where to start the knot to create a four-in-hand small enough to sit on the collar stud, then arch out slightly, held in place by a small clip just under my grey waistcoat. Standards of what seems like a hundred years ago now - but we did look very smart. Your wonderful tie retrospective reminded me of those days - thank you Raphael.
My Dad had 1 (just one) ...one tie. And he wore it for his wedding, important events, other people's weddings, his niece graduation ceremony.... on every photo there he is with his 1 beige tie. 🤣 He was a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy obviously but it has always killed me (of fun) that he owned one and only beige tie.
This may be the most enjoyable sartorial video I've ever seen in my life. Thank you, Raphael. I thought I was the only one with hundreds of ties. Now I feel part of a unique club that appreciates beautiful & classy menswear.
You can never have too many ties. I got a tie wall of around 600 arranged by color, I wear a different tie to work every day and when I am in virtual meetings my ties are behind me and people think it's a giant painting or virtual background but lose their minds when they find out it's all ties.
I appreciate your appreciation of vintage. I'm more of a modern tie wearer, focusing almost exclusively on silk. At one time I had over 120 ties, however, I have given away more than 60 of these, keeping my favorites or gifts for myself. I love ties. I love dressing into them. I think it is a disappearing art and I am distressed at this. Wearing a tie brings up your self-awareness and esteem, and can keep you focused on a professional attitude. Love your videos and keep up the great work .
100% I wear a tie every opportunity I can get. I never wore them in my youth in fear of them getting grabbed in a fight or getting dirty but now that I am in my thirties it gives you a more dignified look. Neck wear is great for older guys since it distracts from guts, hides weird necks, gives shape to the face and aside from the pocket square is one of the few ways you can really go crazy with colors and fabrics in an otherwise boring slab that is most of menswear.
I actually can’t wait to see the tie rack!! Being able to see them all on hangers is not ideal!! I need something for belts as well!! And….pocket squares in the future.
I got about 600+ pure silk ties, and counting, since I wear a different tie to work every day. I've made a rack out of 2 tension bars and two heavy duty 12 foot curtain rods (that still managed to bow slightly from the sheer weight of the ties) I have them sorted by color. They take up a whole wall in my room so I look like a crazy person, it was the only way to store them because my closet is completely stuffed.
Wonderful collection! I'm in the same boat right now. I have many more ties than I can see at a glance. I would be very interested in seeing the follow up video on the new tie rack and how it fits into your wardrobe storage!
I've got a couple of those big shoe racks that fit over the back of wardrobe doors. I put all my ties (in rainbow order, plus black and white/silver at either end) on the spars of the shoe racks. Cheap and organised.
WOW! Simply amazing. As always, class, style, and wonderful personal information. I needed this in order to know which tie is best to wear at certain times of the year.
I had a decent collection of ties, mostly vintage, but I lost a lot over the years and got rid of a lot last time I moved. I had a supposed vintage black widow silk tie. If I dressed in formal or preppy attire more often, and had more money, I would most definitely collect ties. I have completely fallen in love with the look of wool or cashmere ties, linen and or cotton ties, and knitted ties.
My tie collection span from 1977 to ?, I have a soft spot for ties... My tie collection started when I was working part-time in a small college town men's clothing store; later becoming a store manager of another men's clothing store, my collection took off. Five years ago, I thinned out my collection but have more now than ever before. Something about a beautiful tie, still catches my attention even though I rarely wear one. Majority of my ties now, comes from thrifting.
Same here. Now that ties are basically dead I'm getting great examples from thrift stores and estate sales. I just like them. I'd get laughed out the door if I wore one to work
I get the same response, maybe little more subtle when I wear a tie to Church, usually get ask if I'm giving the sermon. But the usual venues I get to wear my ties are weddings or funerals. It's sad to see formality fall to such a low level. It's even worse when retired; big bellies and slobbery. Of course, I'm doing my part to change this image by joining Planet Fitness and wearing an occasional tie.
I have a character and one of their hobbies/character traits is wearing matching ties with their partners clothes. I’ve been struggling (and .. sort of procrastinating) to find tie patterns, looks, that would match their personality and this video opened up my mind on kinds of different ties. So thank you. This would probably not be the last time I’m going to visit this video though. XP
wow, i feel like a kid at a candy store...err rather a gentleman at a vintage suit store.......the mind boggles at the combinations these ties could produce..
I recently got into menswear as a freshman in highschool and i really want to get into buying vintage and increasing my collection, the selection shown by Mr. Schneider is really awe inspiring and leaves me envious of his collection but i feel it further fuels my want to increase my own collection. Awesome stuff man.
Keep it up! I got into classic menswear at around the same age as you. I wore a suit everyday to the point they thought I was a student teacher and I would ditch, I dropped out of high school and was working at Papa John's but I always put a blazer on after work, It did not go unnoticed and I was pulled into sales by a customer. Wearing a suit in sales is a lot of pressure so it forced me to out perform everyone, I then went into the tech world and was always fast tracked up the ladder because of the way I looked and spoke. I now work for myself as a tech consultant and make great money despite having no formal education in large part to the way I dress.
I'm mostly for paisley and floral patterns. My ties are first ordered into favourites and "others", for the favourites I have 3 boxes: one with red, pink and purple tones, one with blues, greys and blacks, and one with browns, yellows and greens
My favorite tie I got was from an ex pilot of American Airlines. He was a long serving pilot and had a very interesting collection I picked up at a rummage sale in Minneapolis... It was various blue colors with stewardess and a pilot that looked American but was made in Japan in the 1950s. It may not be a gentleman type piece, but I love it.
There were also pieces from the Walker Estate (founder of the Walker Art ctr)too, along with some cherished historic art books with his ex-libris book plates. The ties were not as impressive as the several I picked up from the long retired pilot.
A beautiful collection! I'm confused about the difference between a Macclesfield Neats pattern tie and a micropattern tie. Could you please explain the difference for me? Thanks so much! Lisa
Hi Lisa, micropattern ties are all ties with small patterns on them irregardless if they are woven or printed. Macclesfield is a town in England known for silk printing. Hence small patterned ties on printed ties, typically, in subdued colors are called Macclesfield neats.
@@gentlemansgazette Thank you so much! I appreciate it! I just love your channel! Been a subscriber for several years now. Loved the tie collection! Lisa
I like wearing ties I used to wear them for work I will wear them now for special occasions or a holiday I sometimes wear them on my days off just to give my self a great look I love wearing them I a lot different designs I wore one Monday 4TH of July I have solid ties I have striped ties and I have some ties that have animals Civil War I don’t wear them much everyday but I will wear them when I just feel like it
What kinds of ties should I look for when building my collection? I'd be open to wearing ties more often, but let me give some more personal details to my situation: I'm a younger gentleman currently 25 years old (and long time Gentleman's Gazette subscriber who has watched just about every video on this channel!) and a college/university student (currently majoring in Psychology). I'm basically starting from scratch with my "tie collection" for my wardrobe as I currently only have one or two formal ties. I only have about 2 formal suits, but what I really like wearing are sport coats because they are versatile as I can dress them up or down. I own roughly a dozen sports coats (a few tweed, a few formal [mostly solids] and a few less formal by weave patterns). I've used pocket squares and other accessories occasionally, but ties are something I haven't used a lot. I'm open to wearing them, yet one can see why I haven't needed them as often due to having more sport coats and being able to (usually) dress them down (especially by patterned dress shirts versus more formal solids). Is there a system of tie "must-haves" to start a collection? Should I just purchase ties only with specific coats to pair in mind (like grenadine/knit ties with tweed sport coats etc.), or should I simply purchase individual ties I like and build the tie portion of my wardrobe slowly over time? Any advice is welcomed :)
I believe they have an episode of essential ties. I would look it up in YT, I’m sure it will come up. They tell you to get the most versatile ones first, a couple of solid single color ones (dark blue, dark green…), some classic patterns that might match your outfits (their store Fort Belvedere can be used as a guide for some ideas) and the knit ties, which will go great with some more relaxed look with sport coats.
Hi friend, as you have seen the ties displayed in this video most of them were casual ties meaning that they canbe worn with sport jackets and as well suit jackets. Having many ties gives you the luxury to dress accordingly and uniquely. Try to purchase as many ties as you can specifically 1980s ties according to my suggestion.
Here's my bit of advice: Go to Dillard's. Dillard's ties dominate my wardrobe. They're usually patterned, and they're bolder, they often come in medallions or interesting designs, and that really works well when you're going less for corporate businessman and more for the dresser-for-fun. They're still classic and elegant, but the designs are extremely attractive and exciting. Tie brands at Dillard's include Hart Schaffner Marx and Daniel Cremieux. If you can't shop there, consider going online. As a bit of advice, going off of my previous advice, going for patterns and colors and fun accessories is a good idea for young gentlemen. Wearing a dark, navy, two-piece suit with a dark tie will look more out-of-place at a friendly gathering than, say, a glen check suit with a fun tie, or a sport coat with a colorful pocket square. The idea is not to look like a corporate businessman who happened to show up to a get-together. This kind of look certainly has historical precedence, too. Casual suits are a thing, and can still be worn with a tie and dress shoes!
I have a tie hanger, it just looks like a cube of horizontal velvet-covered bars that you just fold your tire over top of and layer them however you plan to organize
Although I rarely ever wear neckties I still enjoy collecting them, I first started collecting ties with Pasley patterns. I currently have 946 wearable ties and many are vintage. My goal is to have a minimum of 2000 Neckties in my collection.
Raphael, love ties. Interesting textiles and designs. Mine are all thrifted . I am a quilter and this fall am planning to take a workshop where we deconstruct and create a quilted project using the ties. Hopefully that’s not to horrifying.
Depends on the ties. I've saved some Brooks Brothers and Dior ties from quilters, and now they live amongst my tie wall with their other 600 bretheren.
This would be an excellent use of ties that are either lower quality, or maybe lightly damaged in some parts (moth holes and the like), since I'm assuming you could work around those areas so they don't show or aren't included at all
In the olden, olden days I was almost religious in my daily choice of rep ties versus medallion pattern ties. Will my tie coordinate with my braces?!? Then in the olden days I made sure I looked impeccably "business casual" ... which meant wearing everything I wore in the olden, olden days just without the tie & jacket. But now? It's a major achievement if I even have to put on a clean shirt for a meeting where I know I'll have to turn on my video camera!! Definitely nostalgic for the olden, olden days.
There comes a point where you must have ties you don't ever wear. It is great that you categorize them and that is an idea that could help others choose the right tie for the right season/occasion but it just seems there must be tied you never choose. Do you just keep them for the fun of it?
Gotta love patterned ties! I'm beginning a collection of vintage Liberty ties in all sorts of micro and macropatterns. Do you collect bow ties as well❓
I also do have a good collection of ties 👔, about 175 all classified by colors and style. I'd like to know if you could have a video on how to wear an ascot ..
I have 120+ ties (listed in an A-Z of designer names to cover the alphabet. From (A) Georgio Armani, Loris Azzaro... to (Z) Ermenigildo Zegna. It started when I bought a tie and then bought the designer who taught the master. The master's master. They hang on 'Made in Germany' 80's tie racks that can hold 20 ties each. I noticed that you didnt even mention Hermès as you turned that tie over :-)
Love your content! Can you guys do a video on beginners guide for getting custom tailored suit? Im not sure how to determine a good tailor, and not sure if they have good fabric or not. Thank you!
Hello, Please advise, I need a new assortment of Ties, But THe thing is Ties as you know are quite expensive, I found a site that has Microfiber Ties, let me ask you are they good quality of ties, What's your thougths on Microfiber,
The key to crazier ties is going for lighter suits (especially blues) making sure the width of the tie is close to the width of the lapel, having the suit fit really well and being esthetically consistent. Fore example when I wear more vintage looking ties I wear my heavier leather shoes wear my thicker hornrim glasses but when I wear my slimmer brightly colored or more modern pattern ties I wear my clear frames and my slim loafers. I also find your haircut/face grooming situation has to be more on point when wearing bold ties because ties draw attention to the face.
And here I was, lamentably languishing in ignorant obscurity, fancying the idea that my two hopelessly-crammed, haphazardly distinguished clumps of about 100 ties, were ‘ unmatched ‘. I’ve been put in my place.
Yes I see it´s sience again when and what not to wear, whaat a little secret pocket for the pill never seen that, then again I don`t wear ties, very hard these days get a man to wear a tie if it´s not nessersareley on the clubnight or any other event, Your wedding day tie looked just fine ,I like the scotish tartans if you belong too a clan, thank you 3000 ties my guees,
I've inherited a lot of ties from my grandfather, who was a very sharp dresser but he was also really into micropaterns, especially unusual, almost tribal ones. He pulled that off effortlessly but they are really clashing with my style, which is a real shame. They are really nice, vintage ones but I can wear only the most boring ones.
Love your videos guys, informative and well presented. Unfortunately alot of mens styles channels are very preachy and in your face, yours are the opposite. You have a new subscriber keep up the great work!
You may even have more ties than me, although I probably still beat you with shoes and jackets .... maybe. I also learnt something new about ties. European ties go up to the heart .. American ties go down to the pocket 😉
I started collecting vintage ties for my husband in the early 80s. He has100 of them at present - Forties, Fifties and some Sixties and Seventies - but doesn't wear them as he's retired now. His collection includes one tip-up tie :) Anybody interested?

In a recent job interview, the interviewers remembered me for my neckwear, and were impressed by the fact I make my own pieces.
It is impressive that you can make your own neckwear.

Sven, please wear more of these ties in your videos!!!! Ive seen ties repeated but you have so many lovely ties!!!
Always a joy to listen to tips and enhancing scenarios by the professionals.
My favourite ties are the 1940s inspired diamond pattern prints especially paired well with a black pinstripe suit
And the brown Ralph Lauren diamond pattern tie could go well with a pastel yellow shirt and dark blue suit

I typically like the smaller pattern or tone on tone type of tie although it is nice to see a super conservative outfit with a splash of color
I would love to see your jacket´s collection
Most of my colleagues wear ill fitting polo shirts at work. I like wearing a shirt and tie
Raphael can you make a video about your suit and blazer collection?
wardrobe tour will take 1 decade
Fact: there's at least one tie in this video.
The most interesting thing about this is just seeing what's possible.
I think that organizing by material, size, and then main colors/pattern should be sufficient.
There comes a point where you must have ties you don't ever wear.
It is great that you categorize them and that is an idea that could help others choose the right tie for the right season/occasion but it just seems there must be tied you never choose. Do you just keep them for the fun of it?
honestly, i'd wear those crazy ties if i want to make my outfit fun:) maybe make the tie the main attraction of the outfit
Gotta love patterned ties! I'm beginning a collection of vintage Liberty ties in all sorts of micro and macropatterns. Do you collect bow ties as well❓
Been waiting for this since discovering this chanel
Rivalling Indy niedell tie collection as well
Since i watched this video i started collecting from 1 to 143 ties
I love ties. Never seen that many in my life though. One day I'll have a collection like that.
I made a skirt out of many neckties.... its awesome
Hey Raphael I was wondering if you own any puff ties? if so could you do a video on them please, I’m a very big fan of the puff tie.
I I thought, that my 40 necktie collection is too large and i need to make it smaller. After this video I realized, that I'm wooden spooner. :D
I noticed that you didnt even mention Hermès as you turned that tie over :-)
Great video. You mentioned your school tie yet did not go into rep ties?
Don't know how many ties you have but I'd certainly want to see that tie rack once ready : it's a bit of mess in my closet as well :p
Love your content! Can you guys do a video on beginners guide for getting custom tailored suit? Im not sure how to determine a good tailor, and not sure if they have good fabric or not. Thank you!
I see, Raphael is begging to like the look of two rings near each other.
How many of these ties do you actually wear regularly?
Holy smokes,he has to have over 50 neck-ties
not including his bow ties
Hello, Please advise, I need a new assortment of Ties, But THe thing is Ties as you know are quite expensive, I found a site that has Microfiber Ties, let me ask you are they good quality of ties, What's your thougths on Microfiber,
Still trying to work out the brighter more playful ties for summer
The key to crazier ties is going for lighter suits (especially blues) making sure the width of the tie is close to the width of the lapel, having the suit fit really well and being esthetically consistent. Fore example when I wear more vintage looking ties I wear my heavier leather shoes wear my thicker hornrim glasses but when I wear my slimmer brightly colored or more modern pattern ties I wear my clear frames and my slim loafers. I also find your haircut/face grooming situation has to be more on point when wearing bold ties because ties draw attention to the face.
I wanted to see the tie holder or hangers too
Love the ties😌. As a woman I will need training on the ties for my future husband 😏. Maybe he hates ties☺️. 🙏📖😇
Can you do an ring update video would be really cool
Do you get your ties new or used/vintage? At $80 a piece, you have a fortune there.
And here I was, lamentably languishing in ignorant obscurity, fancying the idea that my two hopelessly-crammed, haphazardly distinguished clumps of about 100 ties, were ‘ unmatched ‘. I’ve been put in my place.
How to pair tie with shirt & suit
Great ties! I think you have about 600-700.
How come you are wearing 3 rings?
Don't know but I would venture a guess if around 500 ties?!
I thought I had a collection!
Great video Raphael. I wish have a great collection in the future. Please traduce this video for your channel in Spanish. 👌🙏
How isn't this video 20 hours long?
Probably could be 20+ hours if he kept counting at the end xD
imagine if he described every sinle one, gave its meaurements and how when and where he bought it😅
Great video as always - learnt a lot. But honestly I would be very interested in Saul Goodman attire analysis, if you do such things.
Some people call it a problem, i call it a solution.
I am attending a wedding in August can I borrow one?
I have in my collection something about 200 neckties.
How hard will it be finding matching pocket squares to all these ties?
You wouldn't want to match the pocket square with the tie, so no there's no need to find its match
You may even have more ties than me, although I probably still beat you with shoes and jackets .... maybe.
I also learnt something new about ties. European ties go up to the heart .. American ties go down to the pocket 😉
Hold on, I have to go put on a tie to watch this
I started collecting vintage ties for my husband in the early 80s. He has100 of them at present - Forties, Fifties and some Sixties and Seventies - but doesn't wear them as he's retired now. His collection includes one tip-up tie :) Anybody interested?
According to my calculations there are 421 ties, but it can be even more
120 ties I also love collecting ties
No
Man...I feel the urge to bust out a spreadsheet!
POV: Raphael kidnaps you and takes you back to his style dungeon
No bow ties?
