Yes the West (particularly the USA) has lost its way in that regard. I’m all for self-expression but there are times to leave the tennis shoes and graphic t-shirts at home in favor of pieces that are more appropriate for a particular occasion. Furthermore, those of us who do opt to take that tack - whether for specific occasions or on a regular basis - should not be looked upon a certain way or judged negatively for wanting to look our best if said version of “Our Best” adheres to a more classic aesthetic. Classic dressing is not a crime!
I wear a different tie to work every day. I am up to around 850, almost all of them are silk. They cover my wall and it is my backdrop on the occaisions that I work from home. It was pricey at first but it made me stand out at the company (no one wears ties daily, not even the CEO) and I attribute it to the company doubling my salary.
Great recommendations there. I love all three. I would add: Turnbull & Asser (terrific for paisleys), Amidé Hadelin, Stefano Ricci (which I hardly ever see mentioned but which are superb), Charvet (I know Hugo has mentioned before) and for bowties, I highly recommend R Hanauer in the US and Le Noeud Papillon in Australia.
One American brand I really like is Robert Talbott. I've lived many years in California (where they are located) and now that I live in another state I fondly wear RT ties to remind me of my time in California. Thank you for such a fascinating video!
Wonderfully said about the modern association of neckties being seen as for work only. We need to remind people that they are a pleasure to wear, and give positive associations to them.
The first one from Urban Ties is amazing! Thank you for covering a Romanian brand. As a sartorial enthusiast living in Romania I haven't heard about Urban Ties until now!
Love this channel, keep up the good work Hugo & Sonya! As I wear ties myself on a daily basis, I've got a few more brands/makers who, in my humble opinion, deserve a shout out: 1. E. Marinella 2. Patrizio Cappelli 3. Drake's London 4. Shibumi Firenze 5. Viola Milano
I edited my tie collection from around 50 to about 25. I still have few from my father...going back to the 1940s...and many from the 1980s/90s. ⁰ We share our love for them. My favorite is still a rep of red, blue with gold and solid Glen plaid I bought in a Scotland shop. Mon dieu!
Hugo, I love your work and your books. I share your love of ties and also lean towards stripes. My son is 13 and already eyeing up my collection. I have rationalised down to about 75 ties. I wanted to give a little feedback that the video felt a little like an advert for 4 companies. If this is your business model fair enough but I was supprised that so many companies did not get even a small mention. Obvious brands come to mind such as Hermes, Ferragamo, E.Marinella, Shibumi, Silvio Fiorello to mention just a few. I appreciate you may wish not to promote some of these but just your brief opinion (good or bad) would have been valuable to me. Thanks again for the great work you do.
Dear friend, many thanks for your feedback. It's actually not an advert for these companies (even if I would be happy if they do sell a few ties thanks to this video) because this video is not financed by them (two of them had even no idea I was going to publish it!!) and I perceive no commissions on sales (not our style and business model). The question asked by many of you was: what are your favorite ties and the ones you possess and wear the most. And those 4 brands represent 75% of my tie closet, together with a few Charvet, Petronius Milano, Marc Guyot, F. Marino, Dare in Paris and Hermes (which by the way I did mention). Otherwise we personally know Maurizio Marinella (they have a chapter in our book "the Italian Gentleman"), we never tried Shibumi in Florence but we heard great things about them and we also know the work of Fiorello (from Sicily) which is obviously very good. You could also add Albizzati, Drake's and so many others. But this would require a much longer video. All my very best, Hugo
Thank you for sharing these ties! I'm taking notes and looking at the kinds of ties I want to add to my collection. Medallion ties are a gap for me right now, but I'm also seeing how you're using much more muted ties so well compared to what I wear. This is a fantastic video for helping me to increase my own knowledge and to see how I can better use ties in my wardrobe!
Love your enthusiasm on ties and such things. Maybe especially as an anomaly in my family for getting geeky about fashion, design, and the visual arts. Now I want to wear all of my vintage ties that have been in storage!
Beautiful selection of ties... incredibly subtle and classy! For me, I think 90% of my silk tie collection have floral designs. And, wild colours... from Italian designers. Thanks for posting.
I enjoyed something from them all, but I especially like the Spacca Neapolis collection and I hadn't heard of them before so thanks for bringing them to my attention.
Ah, Hugo! When you said 'ties are about taste', that hit the nail on the head! I definitely wear a tie as an expression of myself. I buy a lot of my ties in thrift/charity shops: I always look for vintage and/or quality. My favourite tie is one that looks from a far as silk - in fact its a wool tie with a muted paisley pattern. It knots exquisitely! It looks like men's neckwear is being transferred from the business to pleasure? Discuss.... Merci, Tony
Yes sir, very few people wear ties for business nowadays (except lawyers hopefully). But more and more gentlemen are wearing neckwear by choice! And that's very comforting. Cheers, Hugo
Finally i found your channel monsigneur Hugo .The last of the great French aristocrats who escaped the horrors of 1793.First time i saw you with Kirby Elison and i woed bitterly that you haven't got your own channel yet i stumbled upon a video with Eddie Baldassare and you and i saw the Light ,of course immediately i subscribed and i want to learn more of style and grace .I just passed my 5th X es and to be honest seldom i see men at that age who is not just elegant but in exellent shape ,like the aristocratic image of a French Bonvivan.I thank you for your mere existence and to show by your persona that beauty and elegance can be life -long .Many many blessings to your Lady and yourself from the United Kingdom.
I have been gifted many ties from Amazon, but I have one tie I got off eBay. eBay is where I look the most. I love ties with unique patterns and I also like vintage ones. Big fan of wearing a tie when I wear a suit
I have very few ties (just four) given my modest budget for clothes so I am quite picky when it comes to choosing one. It goes without saying that I really loved the blue medallion Calabrese you wore a lot which is why I decided to also get it. It is perfection!
Interesting that Tie Your Tie focuses on vintage materials. Japanese artists are obsessed with getting the material right before anything starts. The best chefs, for example, insist on the right producer and producing region of rice for each dish, the right breed and breeder for beef, chicken, etc. They usually know the breeders and farmers by name and visit their estates regularly. Glad to check in after a long absence. Nice job Hugo and Sonya!
A lovely tie selection Hugo and your enthusiasm for ties is refreshing, to say the least. I always wear a tie at work - no, I’m not a banker 😂 - as a mark of respect for the occasion, but I have also been wearing a tie some days on my day off too, for about 18 months. A little story for you: I started going out in a tie on the weekends and one day, in my local coffee shop, a lady allowed me to go in front of her in the queue because she looked at my tie and assumed I was at work, so I accepted haha. I really think people treat you with more respect when you wear a tie, but I don’t wear one to be noticed - quite the opposite actually. A big reason why I think ties have fallen out of favour with many men is because of the perceived lack of practicality associated with them. Thanks for another informative episode.
Thank you for making this video I have been wanting to add better ties to my wardrobe but wasn’t sure what brands were good. Just ordered two beautiful Calabrese ties off of eBay.
I scour thrift stores looking for ties that catch my eye. Have found vintage YSL ties, a Hermes, a Brioni and 2 Christian Dior ties with the original price tag on them, never worn. $9 and $16.
There are some great examples in your own personal collection. But more important than the individual choices, was that you showed that you could find high quality ties at reasonable, even modest, prices. Even TieYourTie has selections in its shop that are around the 100 € mark. A good follow up to this episode would be to pick a few ties, both stripes and patterns, that you wear with different suits, and explain what makes the tie work with that shirt and suit combination. Even those who are skilled at putting outfits together can benefit from learning the thought processes of others in putting an outfit together.
Another great segment. Always looking to learn about businesses that produce a quality product. I’m trying to add quality pieces to my wardrobe, not quantity.
My grandfather mothers side gave me half a dozen ties when he taught me the 4 in hand and half windsor. Two of them are way too old fashioned, clear to even a novice like me, but 4 of them are still excellent, silk. The bright yellow solid colour is my fave but does not go well with anything but black I guess. He rarely wore them but nice to have. I should step up my tie game.
Awesome recommendations Hugo! I own a tie from Urban ties and love it! On the other end of the spectrum I was able to snag 3 Charvet ties at an estate sale for about $20 each. Hopefully in the near future I can add some ties form Tie your Tie. Best regards
Good Morning Mr Jacomet Your ties collection is fascinat . I imagine its not easy for you choice your tie every days. 😊 So nice épisode Freindly Sofian

It is funny but I still remember many of the ties I have owned over five decades. I gave most of them away, but in a strange way still miss them. I am retired and in live in a casual place. I only wear a tie several ties a month. I feel better dressed when I wear them.
Hugo, you didn't mention my favourite tie of yours - Bronze tie with triple stripe, that you wore in Kirby Allison collaboration video. The light grey striped suit and that tie was such a beautiful combo! Would love to hear more about that tie.
Hi Hugo. I enjoyed watching this video and learning about brands I did not know about. I have ties from Shibumi, Cappelli, E. Marinella and Budd. What is your view on matching tie widths and lapel widths? Do you have a separate video on that subject?
Thank you for sharing, Hugo. My favorite ties are from Polo Ralph Lauren. They are English by design but made in Italy. Similar to the Rubinacci aesthetic: mixing English tailoring with Neapolitan tradition.
I have the 12 fold navy and gold tie from the Parisian Gentleman collaboration with Calabrese. It holds a special place in my collection. For it’s beauty, rarity and pur3 craftsmanship! One question Hugo, i would love to have a vicuña tie in the natural color, do you think it would look nice and be wearable? Thanks
Very nice & elegant collection of ties Hugo ,,,,i totally share your passion to it ,and i was lucky to buy few ties from como in italy when i visited it , moreover ,,,i loved the outfit of dear sonya specially the red scarf with the red shoes))))), i hope i was right about the color ))), Love to both of you from Cairo.
Hello both , just discovered your channel, at 56 I'm starting my own upgrade as it were 😊 in dressing Well, oddly enough it actually takes a little courage, not much I know but a little courage for most men to wear a suit or sports jacket and maybe waistcoat, tie for no particular reason, occasion. Especially when we mess it up 😢 as I do, but on the upside I've had a few nice compliments from women which is nice, really is. And lastly the question I expected which is where are you going? Why the suit? What's the occasion? Well I've decided to say the truth right from the Start, I either just smile or say " I want to". Take care.
The tie is the only purely decorative accessory in the traditional male wardrobe. Therefore it is rather strange that so many men have stopped wearing ties. Perhaps, the associations are stronger than we think. The tie is still very strongly associated with the corporate world, banking, finance, government, and law. I never had to wear a tie to work, so for me the tie is associated with Sunday at church, nights at the opera, and elegant parties I attend a few times a year. Women put a lot of effort into looking attractive when going out. For men it’s so much easier than for women and yet men seem to be unwilling to even tie a tie.
I'm rather new to the sart game (and I'm 60 so...). But I found a Italian tie maker via facebook of all places that collects small lots of vintage fabrics. His wife (by what the website says) does the sewing to order. I have some REAL charmers from him, I just hope they really ARE as good as I think they are! In the $130 US range.
Thanks dear Hugo for this great review. Ties will come back😉 and so cute moment at 9:40 « Sonya, do you like this tie? » with a big smile, true love😊👏🏼
I sometimes think I was born in the wrong era. I love elegance and dresses and try to live my life with a sense of style. You have a nice tie collection but I love my Hemes tie. I especially loved my scarf print ties. They are a little more flamboyant but so is my style.
Good evening Walter, Hermès ties are wonderful of course. But everybody knows them. That's why I try to put some well deserved light on smaller makers. Cheers, Hugo
Do you ever wear a cravat? I find that if a shirt shrinks over time and the collar is too tight i can wear a cravat save having that untidy top button undone with a tie look.
I work in a huge advertising firm in NYC and no one wears a tie, even leadership in their profile pictures. Luckily, I’m an Orthodox Jew so I get to wear a suit and tie every weekend for the Sabbath. My colleagues only put on a tie for weddings.
My problem with ties is that as a very short man, i can never find ties my size. I love wearing ties specially with a vest but its hard to find a tie that fits me. Do you know any brand that also makes quality shorter ties?
I miss when Hermes ties were between $95 and $135 depending on the exchange rate, and I miss when they were more importantly pretty and whimsical without being silly. At least Ferragamo picked up the slack (when on sale).
These are very conservative ties, mostly stripes. I'm surprised Hugo doesn't wear more dandy-esque patterns. I buy silk ties from charity shops for £1 or £2, I can't imagine spending $100 even for those lovely draping Japanese ones.
Hi my name is charlie alba I have a tie collection I love wereing my tie I my life it makes me feel like I am a business man and that is what I wanted to do have my own privit business to be a writer
I think it's because everything now is about comfort. I'm from a generation who was not obsessed with comfort. You guys even have comfort food!! (we can see the results). Cheers my friend! Hugo
If i win the lottery tomorrow, I’m going to fly this gentleman out for a month and pay him to establish a worthy wardrobe for me! I’m sure i’ll be broke afterwards but hey, i’ll be the finest dressed homeless man on the streets! 😅
some of those striped ties look a bit too much like something a used car salesman from the 1970's might be wearing. you have to be very careful with stripes.
Hugo your dress shirt is not an undershirt. You need a real undershirt to not show nipple, color differential and hygiene so as to not prematurely age your shirt
@@parkosterwich7274I think Hugo said at some point he has more than 100 shirts, didn't he? He'll be fine. Also the collar and cuffs always break down first, undershirts won't help.
When you purchase a tie, do you buy the tie that you know will work with a suit/jacket that you already own or buy the tie because of the quality , color, and design and worry about coordinating it with your wardrobe later. Thanks!
An elegant gentleman from another time - when people dedicated time to looking classy. Understated and incredibly elegant.
Many thanks! Hugo

@@YacDiesel Not a crime at all! It's rather a blessing for this ugly world! Hugo
Calerciric - many people still do take time to dress well. It’s not something from the past.

It’s so nice to find another tie enthusiast. In my sphere of friends and acquaintances I am the only one with a passion for neck wear.😊
We are resisting William! And maybe neckwear will come back! Cheers, Hugo
Just love how excited you get going through these ties, Hugo 😊
I love them indeed! It's pure joy for me. Cheers, Hugo

Lovely vid. Bravo. How to store ties. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🥂
You're right. But we resist my friend! In style (and God) we trust! Hugo
Dear Robert, I don't know who you are talking about, but if you like them all is good! Cheers, Hugo PS: it's never too late!!!
18:59 All are so nice. Thank for sharing, I am a tie lover so I really like this video.
Thanks dear Hugo for this great review. Ties will come back😉 and so cute moment at 9:40 « Sonya, do you like this tie? » with a big smile, true love😊👏🏼
Thanks my friend. All my best, Hugo
Bonjour Hugo, une version en français est-elle prévue ?
Pas exactement la même mais sans doute cet hiver (avec d'autres modèles). Amicalement, Hugo
No I don't my friend. But my wife does very often. Cheers, Hugo
Glad to see somebody else has such a strong candy-clothing association. Wonder how common it actually is.
Yes my friend! Ties (and pocket squares) are candy to my eyes for sure! All my best, Hugo
I love ties, but never wanted to eat them.
The Urban Ties website has no information about the length or width of the ties, which is not helpful.
The width is 8cm (which is excellent). You can always send an email to Dan. Hugo
Commendable collection of ties....
Thank you sir! Hugo
I work in a huge advertising firm in NYC and no one wears a tie, even leadership in their profile pictures. Luckily, I’m an Orthodox Jew so I get to wear a suit and tie every weekend for the Sabbath. My colleagues only put on a tie for weddings.
Happy birthday to your mommie.😊
Haha thank you Felix. She'll appreciate for sure! Hugo
My problem with ties is that as a very short man, i can never find ties my size.
I love wearing ties specially with a vest but its hard to find a tie that fits me.
Do you know any brand that also makes quality shorter ties?
I advise you to end an email to Tie you Tie (dropping our name). I think they 'll be able to help you. Best, Hugo
@@SARTORIALTALKS i will reach out to them, lets see
Thank you Hugo!
@@airuniformShibumi also makes short ties! Try 140cm
I miss when Hermes ties were between $95 and $135 depending on the exchange rate, and I miss when they were more importantly pretty and whimsical without being silly. At least Ferragamo picked up the slack (when on sale).
I LOVE TIES 😤😤😤‼️
Same here!
Oh my...❤
These are very conservative ties, mostly stripes. I'm surprised Hugo doesn't wear more dandy-esque patterns. I buy silk ties from charity shops for £1 or £2, I can't imagine spending $100 even for those lovely draping Japanese ones.
Hugo! What are your feelings on turtlenecks?
Keep on, keeping on, mon ami! Nous avons les memes pensées!
I have nothing against turtlenecks of course (even if I prefer mock necks). Cheers, Hugo
Nous partageons un autre lien commun… des cheveux longs et bien coiffés. Bon choix!
Ok merci 😊
Hi my name is charlie alba I have a tie collection I love wereing my tie I my life it makes me feel like I am a business man and that is what I wanted to do have my own privit business to be a writer
I love ties, but it’s not the most comfortable while working. I think this is why less and less young people wear it.
I love a good Balthus knot
I think it's because everything now is about comfort. I'm from a generation who was not obsessed with comfort. You guys even have comfort food!! (we can see the results). Cheers my friend! Hugo
If i win the lottery tomorrow, I’m going to fly this gentleman out for a month and pay him to establish a worthy wardrobe for me! I’m sure i’ll be broke afterwards but hey, i’ll be the finest dressed homeless man on the streets! 😅
If I had to sum up my tie collection in one sentence, it would be, "I have a problem!"
How can we help?
@SARTORIALTALKS Is there a group that I could join, like alcoholic anonymous for someone who has way too many ties & no intention of stopping!
some of those striped ties look a bit too much like something a used car salesman from the 1970's might be wearing. you have to be very careful with stripes.
We all make mistakes.
Can you elaborate please?
Hugo your dress shirt is not an undershirt. You need a real undershirt to not show nipple, color differential and hygiene so as to not prematurely age your shirt
No sir sorry. I never wear my shirts without a jacket and I love this one. Undershirt is a blasphemy for me. Cheers, Hugo
@@SARTORIALTALKS I know but the finest dress shirts can last longer. And the white color will be uniform throughout. Consider
@@parkosterwich7274 You're very kind but I will never do that. No hard feelings though. All my best! Hugo
@@parkosterwich7274I think Hugo said at some point he has more than 100 shirts, didn't he? He'll be fine. Also the collar and cuffs always break down first, undershirts won't help.
@@teekue it will help to a degree you mean . Especially long sleeve ones. I won't say you have to or it's blasphemy if you don't
When you purchase a tie, do you buy the tie that you know will work with a suit/jacket that you already own or buy the tie because of the quality , color, and design and worry about coordinating it with your wardrobe later. Thanks!
