    It is heartwarming to see it in pristine condition. It deserves to be well maintained and well cared for, as it is such an iconic piece of American history. Nice that all four Iowas still exist, along with several other BBs. Beautiful, sleek, powerful, fast, and awe-inspiring to all patriotic Americans!

    I'd love to get out to the west coast and tour her one day. I've been aboard two of them, the USS New Jersey, and the USS Wisconsin. Both are here on the east coast.

      Why should they still be in service? They're gorgeous and majestic on a scale that will never be seen again...but they're pointless now. They were more or less obsolete by WW2 even for anything other than shore bombardment.

    Port of Los Angeles has some really strict drone laws. Not only do you have to have your 107, but you need a permit from Port of L.A. And prof of insurance. Seven days to verify your insurance, then you’ll get approval. Next off to the police to notify them of your shoot, and documents.
    Yea, easier to just do it on the down low. Nice footage. Slow your gimble speed when panning your shot.

    I wonder if they fired one of those 16" barrels, if it could hit the Hollywood sign?

    • @allaboutboats
      @allaboutboats 4 роки тому +2

      I looked it up on Google earth and HNSA. Max range of guns is 42,300 yards (24.03 miles) shooting AP shells, with guns elevated @45 degrees. Aft turret is closest to the Hollywood Sign. As the crow (or shell) flies, the Hollywood sign is 47,700 yards (27.1 miles) away. So almost but not quite. It can hit a lot of places from San Pedro. Santa Monica Pier, Wilshire Hancock Park, Dodger Stadium, Whittier, Montebello, Anaheim, Disneyland, Fullerton, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, all the way to Newport Beach

      I remember reading something from WW1 about an old British Battleship called HMS Revenge being used to bombard German positions inland, like USS Texas she had Torpedo Blisters and they flooded one side to increase the angle of elevation and the range so they could hit targets further inland, Revenge was a Dreadnought of an earlier design than the USS Texas having been laid down and completed just after the Lead Ship of the Class (Dreadnought) but whoever Commanded HMS Revenge knew his Ship and was prepared to take a risk because she would have been Anchored by the Bow and the Stern to hold her just so and although the Aircraft weren't as advanced as during WW2 She was at risk of Torpedo by the early U Boats, maybe even Zeppelins dropping bombs as they were doing on London and other Cities which isn't as well known as it should be, I only came across it by accident they weren't as affective as they could have been....

My dad was on the USS Louisville CA 28 1943-46 in WW2 and was at a reunion and took a Navy Base boat tour and got some really great photos of USS Iowa BB 61. My dad who passed in 2017 at age 92 witnessed (52) sailors and Rear Admiral Theodore Chandler buried at sea due to (3) kamikaze hits in the Pacific. Louisville's 8 inch 55 caliber Main gun turret found in 2016 in Nevada Desert. Take care! Beautiful ship - the sailors keep them ship shape.
