The Revolution - "Purple Rain"

  • I shot this at the first show of 3 that the Revolution performed at First Ave in Minneapolis on Sept. 1st, 2016. Some will say that the performance was less than 'perfect', but it was to me, and others. It was the most emotionally challenging show I am sure they've ever played, and one that I have ever witnessed. They were indeed, a band in mourning, and in the end, celebrated the man that brought them all together.

Wendy is so overlooked as a guitarist. She is brilliant. Many thought she and Lisa were just stage props and they couldn't be more wrong. Very talented musicians in their own right. I am sure this was an extremely emotional show for the band and a gift for all the fans.

People need to stop being so judgemental!!! since Prince is no longer here to sing and play music. I rather see the band he made purple rain with do the song. for people to say no one should do it but Prince is crazy. His music is loved by millions and will be covered and played a million times over. Let the Revolution pay Tribute to the man they owe their careers to. POINT, BLANK, PERIOD!!!!!

Prince didn't write the soundtrack of "Purple Rain" by himself. Read the liner notes. The Dr said Prince wrote half the album. So they owe their careers to each other regarding that album.

@@annascoria6178 Dr. Fink never said that. Every single song on that album, its melody, lyrics, and chord structure is Prince. The Revolution contributed to the arrangement and the production on certain songs with Prince right there. He was not the figurehead some of you guys are making him out to be. He was more than a bandleader and singer--he may have liked James Brown, but he wasn't James Brown. That is not to diminish Wendy and Lisa at all. Their contributions are important. Take Purple Rain. Prince already wrote the song on piano with half the lyrics finished. He and the band worked out the arrangement/production after that. Wendy came up with the idea to open up the chords (his were closed) and may have contributed some as well... which was a great idea on her part and he liked it. After Purple Rain was recorded in First Avenue live, Prince went back and edited parts out (a verse) and employed Lisa to come up with a string arrangement for the background. At one point, while they were hashing out the song, Dr. Fink started playing a lovely little keyboard line. Prince liked it and turned it into a falsetto vocal (the hoo-hoo-hoo-hoohoo part). The guitar solo towards the end was all Prince. He even improvised part of it on stage. Like I said, the Purple Rain recording from the album is actually live (with some additions and tweaks done later in the studio.) Now let's look at Darling Nikki, Beautiful Ones and When DOVES CRY---hate to break to your Revolution worshippers but that is ALL PRINCE without any help with arrangement or production from anyone--all alone, by himself. Now let's look at the rest of the songs--Written by Prince (melody and lyrics), the arrangement and production hashed out by him and and the band...but how much freedom they had is hard to know because there are instances when he literally just went in and told them exactly what to play. There are other instances when he let some members create their parts. And there are jam session recordings as well. It was a blend. The most freedom Wendy and Lisa had in the studio was the Parade, pre-Sign of the TImes era...and Parade is still mostly Prince arrangments/songwriting with two co-written songs with Wendy and lisa and one with Mark/David Z and Prince (And Kiss by the way was still lyrically AND melodically Prince's work.) Wendy and Lisa are mostly prominent in the Crystal Ball/Dream Factory outtakes where they did a fair amount of arrangments on his compositions and contributed a handful of their own (some brilliant ones like Large Room with No Light, and Power Fantastic) which he also contributed to (he wrote the lyrics and worked on the productions) Band contributions are important but he wasn't just the pop performer who shook his ass, bossed people around, strummed some chords and created nursery rhyme melodies that this band turned into masterpieces while he took all the credit. Wanna see how brilliant Prince was back then ON HIS OWN--listen to the long version of the song Crystal Ball. The only band contributions were Susannah Melvoin singing background and Clare Fisher contributing orchestral parts...(Clare Fisher by the way is as important to Prince's work as Wendy and LIsa combined.)

@@rubentrujillo7262 Good Lord. The movie is not accurate. I hope you know that. Prince didn't just show up and write lyrics and sing. Boy, oh boy. He wrote the song's melody, lyrics and basic chord structure first and THEN worked with the band to hash out the production and arrangement. Wendy opened up the chords and I am assuming contributed some to the opening and rhythm section. The guitar solo at the end of the song is all Prince. Purple Rain's recording was actually live and then later tweaked in the studio. His solo was live and improvised. This information by the way is ALL ACCORDING TO THEM and the demo is actually online with just Prince on piano.

Nope that's not the actual one, the original still is at Paisley Park.
What she's seen here playing is one of six copies made by New York Luthier Roger Sadowsky. They were commissioned by Prince's management because of a couple of issues with the original guitar.
First: Prince's affinity to throw his guitars around, and the original manufacturer having discontinued the model, so back ups were always in short supply.
Second: It wasn't really that good a guitar, look up old Sears mail order catalogs and you can find the guitar in there, Prince bought his cheap and liked it because of its raspy sound, listen to "Dirty Mind" (The album, not just the song.) to really get an idea what attracted Prince to that guitar. But when used live, the guitar would screech at high volumes and would hum badly because of its cheap electronics.
      img.wennermedia.com/660-width/rs-136396-debeacafcd0f62a70642622316721ee395e7df34.jpg
So in order to make it a stage worthy instrument, the guitar was fitted with a built in wireless, look up that live clip of "Take me with U" and note the black back plate and the fact that it doesn't have a lead coming from its plug socket.
So Sadowsky was drafted in to build six matching copies for Prince and Wendy to use on the Purple Rain and Parade tours. Prince later gave one of those to Wendy and that's what she's seen playing here.
Oh and another way to differentiate those copies from the original: Prince had the electronics revised once more in the nineties but the new electronics included white cover pickups, rather than black cover, So Prince took a sharpie and colored them black, so with the original as it is now, you can actually see the white emerging as the sharpie ink was worn away.

Here's an analysis of a perfect ending...
7:14 = Signal to the band for the closure.
7:18 = The first chord, a powerful E# to hold on to.
7:20 = Checking with everyone to get the "A-ok" for the ending.
7:29 = A nod in heaven for the final goodbye...
7:34 = A little death as the powerful E# comes to an end...
7:36 = A humble but still "bad-ass" move for the last A# and the end of a musical era...
Lisa... if you weren't there that night, I wouldn't enjoyed this 6000 miles away... From the bottom of my heart, thank you...

The Song was written by Prince, not Wendy and Lisa. It was originally a country music theme, and Stevie Nicks was supposed to write the Lyrics. Lisa toyed with it a bit, by adjusting the chords to another tempo and Prince remade the whole arrangements and the lyrics.
On the Purple Rain Album Wendy, Lisa, Dr Fink and Prince "Co Wrote" or were credited for "Computer Blue" Which was actually a Jam session turned interesting. That explains the chaotic set up of that song.
The first song that Wendy and Lisa would impose on a Prince Album was "Mountains" which Prince HATED at first. They had to twist his arm for him to accept the material and even threatened to quit. Prince re arranged it a bit to fit his vocals and imposed co writer's credit on them (Yes, it was business and he was gangster) . He also accepted "Sometimes It Snows in April" under the same terms.

Wendy and Lisa helped to make Prince a Legend, especially Wendy when she was with Prince and the Revolution, Wendy was the Female Guitarist of the Decade with her Virtuoso Guitar Musicology infused with that of Prince. Wendy put the Guitar Chords into Purple Rain !!! Prince (RIP) Play On Wendy FretSis . . .👍😎🆒🎸🤘☺️💯%🌟🌹🔥♥️🎼🇺🇸🙏 DDH 9-6-2023.

Lisa B, thank you so much for posting this! I was there that night too. I almost didn't go, thinking it wouldn't be a good show without Prince. I changed my mind at the last minute and I was able to get a ticket and so glad I did! it was so emotionally overwhelming of a show, so healing, and so beautiful. Wendy was so brave to take the mic, and she did an AMAZING job! she really captured the heart of the music, and the soul we all needed to feel once again. xoxo

You're welcome! I remember telling my coworkers at the time, once The Revolution announced they were doing some shows, that if they played First Ave, I'd be there. I did. I wish I had tickets for the next 2 nights, but I had obligations back home here in Kansas City. All in all, I KNEW it was going to be one heck of any emotional show. So blessed to have gone.
