- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Saildrone Inc. have released the first video footage from inside a hurricane using a floating drone.
According to NOAA, one of Saildrone's drones, the Saildrone Explorer SD 1045, was directed into the midst of Hurricane Sam, a Category 4 hurricane, with 50-ft waves and 120+ mph winds at the time.

What do you mean? He means back in the day they would have 0 clue that a storm was out there. We have radar now. So long ago they would unknowingly sail right into these things.
I think the fact that it’s lacking sound makes it way more terrifying 😮
😂 Let's add the Chipmunks voice singing in the rain soundtrack.

Imagine what people on ships out at sea endure during this kind of weather? I could never imagine what the guys from the perfect storm had gone through mentally and physically before they met their demise.
Wait what happened the ppl from the show died?
@@D_-zj4nz no its a movie based on a true story. Check it out it's really good. I believe the hurricane that killed them was in the 90s, but I could be wrong
Well to be fair in today's day and age people would be aware of the store coming ahead of time therefore would make the conscious decision not to be out in the middle of the ocean during a hurricane.. let alone Be radioed and have cell phones
They avoid it or die.
Except when they don’t. The El Faro is proof.
I think I see Brian out there on a boat.

I need to watch these daily. So amazing!!! Thank you!

I’ve been in a little boat in this !! I survived! Terrifying!!
50ft steel sailboat. In smaller boats the waves actually are a little less intense. The boat rises and fall with them, in large freighters etc they get slapped by the waves.
Its all still very stressful, we didnt sleep much and went crazy by the end of it.

Serving on a frigate in the Pacific in 90's. On one deployment, we kept running away from typhoons/hurricanes until we finally got caught up in one. Not as bad as that but still a pretty wild ride.
did you get a shiny medal tho
Absolutely amazing. I've always wondered what the open ocean looked like during a powerful hurricane
Well this isn’t surprising to me. It’s about what I would expect to see in a hurricane out in the open ocean. There’s a lot of foam in the water, a lot of spray, and big waves.
Imagine being a drunken pirate a few hundred years ago who passed out for several hours on a small sail boat and you wake up to see this...
It looks exactly how I imagined it would lol
My ship, a Frigate, was caught between two Typhoons out in the Pacific Ocean. I’ve seen this in person and trust me, it’s NOT fun. I was extremely terrified.

Amazing accomplishment, being able to fly the drone in such extreme conditions, I would love to learn more about this drone and how it got out there, I assume it is not a Mavic!
It's called a SAIL drone for a reason
It doesnt fly. Its just a smaller drone-boat type thing, thats used for mapping I think.
@@adelacadena82 the man was just asking a question. You must be great at parties.
I mean considering the fact that the Air Force Hurricane Hunters squadron where living humans fly a plane into a Hurricane to fix the route map data and NOAA pilots who also fly into hurricanes have been doing this for decades. You’d be more impressed at that.
This is an Oof comment lol
Hey brians hand reached for the drone to grab onto something
See this in 3D… all lights out for me
Are waves just the top of the surface or is that the whole body of water moving?
Waves are basically a rolling cylinder. You see maybe 1/3rd of the wave above water. Why they break and crash against shores is water becoming to shallow. Otherwise you need wind to take the tops off waves in order to get them to break
If you turn up the aound loud enough, you can faintly hear the storm playing, "Here I am Rock you like a Hurricane."
Reminds me of the light blue Gatorade from back in the day lmao
That’s incredible. Did it stay afloat?
Amazing footage. Almost feels like you're flying thru the ocean storn and you can't control yourself cus of the winds 🌫🌬🌀🌧
Man this is awesome, can y’all invest in a 360 degree VR video of eye of a hurricane. Max views from that.
Wild bill and the lads would love them seas😂😂
Looks like a few times I’ve been on the Draugen Platform in the North Sea, worst waves I saw were 19.8 metres- 65ft
Ancient sailors really had big balls to face this💀
Simply amazing 😎😎 nature at it's finest 💪💪
That’s fascinating honestly
Looks Amazing ❤❤❤❤❤
wind... water... nice.
That's a brave drone!
It appears as an array of parallel lines of froth, or bands of color variation, or waves, descending towards us, from what begins as a short perimeter line, at lower left. That far perimeter line, with parallel lines ascends toward us, increases until it has risen until it is in the upper left corner, then, briefly, center screen.
What is visible, or defined, just a short distance away apparently is curtains of sea, rain, and sky, that have no seam.
This is amazing and terrifying footage. I think of the people who perished on the El Faro in the Caribbean during Hurricane Joaquin in 2015, and what they faced that awful morning. The captain did not heed weather predictions and steered the cargo ship directly into the eye of the storm. May they all rest in peace.
Hi from Virginia Beach!!⛱
I already got the hebbie gebbies just from looking at them waves! My knees got weird. ☹️

Ocean like this is equally scary as outer space; when youre there youre simply fked. No way around it.
That drone is a tough drone!
We saw the hurricaine come down the stairs as a spring toy 😂
When the word terrifying is an understatement😮
Wow need to see that on 360 VR glasses
That’s like tsunamis just forming everywhere it’s terrifying
Remind me off my cruise
There’s a shrimp having fun below the water🦐
Note to all : Please, if ever stuck in these conditions. Just lay on your back and breathe. You will only float and go with the current anyway.
Makes me think of that last scene in The Perfect Storm when Mark Walberg is stuck out there treading water in the ocean in a huge storm
Never audio on the things that need audio

Imagine being a fish during that hurricane
These saildrones are unbelievable. But, Hurricanes still do not scare me as much as Tsunamis do. 😕
Surfers: this is fine
I'd like to know how big the waves are
This is the kind of stuff that nightmares can be made of
Reminds me of the Truman show . Can turn it up or down with the turn or a knob .
That would be SURREAL!
Now this a giant Gopro camera inside a gigantic washing machine

It is very frightening to be on a ship in a storm as I experienced at 11. VERY frightening
Without sound, this could be just your average rough day at sea. Worked on vessels in seas with waves that make this look like a kiddie pool.
