@@Mikestarwalker Hey for the number system does it change based on dominant hand? Or is it the same regardless? Also does it matter which side the evens or odds are on?
This was really cool! A thing I don't see alot of people talk about is how you should be "aiming" at your opponent, and not their lightsaber. They will block their attack that is coming straight at them, and same if they are attacking you. I like alot of what you said here. THANK YOU!
My 12 year old was luke-warm on the idea of lightsabers, but now that we have them he loves dueling, and said that they are some of the coolest toys we've ever bought. This video is excellent! Thank you!
@SteveGaming69420 And that translates to lightsaber skills not seen for nearly half a century, because...? And don't say Luke was at that level, because he was swinging like a baseball bat on that sail barge.
This marks my first day as a Padawan. Im currently practicing the blocks because they were easier and I got somewhat good at it. I'm gonna try to practice attacks tomorrow. Thanks!
My mom and I were just having fun and doing a friendly lightsaber fight and she went for a 9 and for some reason I did the proper block for a 9. I was shocked because I've never done that 😂😎
I have created my own choreography. First I attack a 5, then a 6, then a 5 again, block an 8, push, attack a 2, then a 1, block a 9, after that I do a flourish. then I attack an 8, block a 6 inverted, attack a 4, then a 3, then I do a vertical Shii-Cho block, attack a 8 then block an 6 inverted again then I attack a 9 which gives me a chance to stab him quickly. This is a very affective combo. Thank you so much Mike!
My brother and I started dueling and this has been very helpful with learning it. The only thing that is a bit complicated is the number system. If you attack 1, you swing right and your partner defends his left. If you defend 1, you hold left and they swing right, it’s the reciprocal that makes it difficult. So what my bro and I did was reciprocal one of us. So if he attacks 1, his right, I defend 1, my left. And if I attack 1, it’s my left and his right. I’m reading his numbers left to right, while he is reading my numbers left to right. I know it might be hard to understand but it seems to be working so far, but whoever does understand if you think I’m screwing up or have a suggestion let me know.
Looking forward to filming my first saber choreo scene thanks to your number system it made things real smooth in working it out appreciate the tips 🤝🏾
Im being either Anakin or Luke for Halloween this year and figured I should know some saber moves so I clicked on this video and it did not disappoint. Within an hour I got the attacks and blocking lessons down. Thank you so much! 😊
I feel like a geek watching this, im not into star wars, but i love using lightsabers and this taught me so much on the mechanics and other basic information. Thankyou!
I have 1 tip for up and coming people. FLIP THE NUMBERS FOR ONE SIDE. This will make it easier for when you are blocking, since it will be the same numbers for you.
Awesome vid, I'm currently in an animation competition so this should help a lot, only thing is normally if someone is cutting upwards, a low block exposes your head for a quick riposte

hey thank you for being really easy to understand, me and my friend are trying to learn lightsaber dueling but we live in an area where its not popular so this helps alot
This guide simply doesn't tell you what to do if you accidentally hit your friends fingers and he punches you in the face ribs chest and kidney. (Yes, thats my brother)
Love your tutorial! I'm a stage fight director and I can say: Very well done! Do you do this professionally or just as a hobby? My personal (and of course not objective) take on this: For beginners, I only teach 1,2,3,4 and 8 now; i avoided 5 and 6, because the differentiation for beginners is sometimes difficult. It often happened to me, that one student parried 6 [as at 2:08 in your video] and the attacker aimed too high (on shoulder level), and because the 5/6 parrys are quite weak really defend a strong hit, the defender would hit himself on the head (of course the attack shoudn't hit that hard when practicing) [And: The attacker aimed a little too high at 3:51, too ;-) ]. I also teach 7 only if needed, because that often caused some almost-accidents. If someone accidentally hits the shoulder, thats ok, but the crotch area is a little more vulnerable ;-) The inverted blocks (or hanging parrys, as i call them) are always cool 😀, that stabing moves (9) are for advanced student in my workshops. Keep the good work up! Love your videos! Always a joy to watch!
I’ve been practicing the number system myself, I got the attacks down, and numbers one through four down for blocking, and I can invert block 1 & 2. This definitely helps me with finding out how my Jedi persona will fight
It really is like an aerobic exercise (or CrossFit). Once you get it down and are moving fast then you will really be burning the calories. Body movement is very important with this.
I can't wait to use the system to train my little brother. He and I both have actual metal lightsabers, something I'm very proud of, so I'm going to teach him about this and show him this video.
Hey!! Thank so much for this amazing Tutorial. I´m a teacher and woll give a star wars course in my school. This is totally a very good video for the beginning
Speaking as a traditional martial artist with almost 18 years of experience, I'm seeing a lot of Original Trilogy influence, which were themselves largely based in traditional longsword and katana styles like kendo and bohurt, in these lightsaber basics.
the thing I have trouble with the leg blocks like the ones you show at around 2:01-2:04 with doing the rotation like that and I know why so you see I don't only do lightsaber but I also do historical US civil war cavalry sabre fencing and with the cavalry swords being they are meant to be one-handed because first off cav would normally carry a rifle like a sharps carbine or cav carbine or a revolver like an 1860 Remington single action army. second off is it was easy to draw and use in a hurry weather it be in the saddle or on foot im used to just sliding the block to the other side like you would do with the cav sabre.
me and my brother in law are wanting to get sabers and duel each other, hes more of a staff guy (a huge darth maul fan) and i am wanting to learn and master form III because it is well inline with who i am as a person and my strength. i have always been a very defensive and resilient person so i know i would excel at it. just getting the money up to get even the most basic of duel ready sabers so we may practice has been a challenge in of itself. however long it may take THIS is the video i will be coming back to in order to learn and to grow as a saber duelist. hell maybe if i can get good enough i could make it a goal to one day try and go pro with it.
Hello Mike I'm Gabriel from Las Vegas Nevada and I got to watch the lightsaber duel training I got a lightsaber at home I took the time to practice lightsaber training step by step little by little and I'm gonna start practicing everyday before it's time for me to go to work everyday so I can learn something new now that we're in 2024 I'm ready to learn something new and ready for a change and lightsaber duel training is one of them I'm a star Wars fanatic myself since I was a kid my favorite Star Wars character is Luke Skywalker.
I noticed that I already knew how to block 9, 8, and 7. The others are new, I’m trying to learn all the blades, like duel wielding, single blade, and double blades. (Crossguards are considered single blade.)
Thank you so much this was very helpful I can't wait to teach this to my nephew because I just figured it out I spent like an hour in my backyard figuring out the whole thing blocking and attacking
Can anyone help me with what to use as a sword. I want to do it at home but am not sure what to use. I would be interested in buying a light saber but wouldn't know where to start
